Answer: I totally disagree that they are not needed. I have older models Shimano reels with the anti-reverse switch and I bought a newer Sedona without the anti-reverse. I can't stand it. Too many times that I prefer to have a free spool and would rather have it available.

Answer: Hi if you are going with the 1000 size reel then that god you picked is nice for it , if you go with the 2500 reel then you mite want to go with a 6 “ foot rod or bigger 6.6 , with my 2500 reel I have paired up with a basspro tourney special heavy action 6”foot one piece rod , love it for bass fishing with jigs and worms.

Answer: The one I purchased in blue box is exactly the same including the gold handle arm. However the black handle on the arm on mine is smaller. so I suspect but not sure that they enlarged the plastic black handle as a newer model!!

Let me just start out by saying the shimano sahara is an amazing reel. I purchased this reel a couple years ago and chose the 1000fd model and paired it up with my 7'6" Fenwick elite tech river runner ultra light rod for trout fishing. I spooled up with 2 pound mono and use this setup almost exclusively as my minijig rod. It can cast a 1/32 ounce minijig an easy 60 feet. This reel is a workhorse and for only $80 it is an amazing deal. It sits comfortably in your hand and is extremely lightweight. The drag is amazingly smooth and will never let you down. I have definitely put this reel to the test over the years. Using it for bass, trout, and pan fish in local lakes. I caught a 7 pound rainbow trout using it in Dixon lake and the reel handled fantastically. Recently I have even caught several wild cutthroat trout up to 4.5 pounds in a tiny stream up in the eastern sierras. The stream couldn't have been more than 2 feet deep and 7 feet across. I had hiked downstream for about 2 to 3 miles to find these trout. I positioned myself 15 feet downstream of the trout and casted my red and gold thomas buoyant about 20 feet upstream from the fish and reeled in as fast as I could. Right as the lure was about to rip right past, the trout turned and inhaled the lure. As soon as I saw that I set the hook and the fight was on. He took off downstream and I since I only had 2 pound test line I had to follow him. So I sprinted downstream after the fish while reeling as fast as I could, and when the fish finally decided to turn upstream, I knew I had a chance. I ripped off my shoes and socks and jumped straight into the frigid water with my net ready. My plan was to keep the tension on the line and use the current to push him back towards me once he tired. It was working very well until I got him within a couple feet of me and the fish came back to life and swam right through my legs. I had to chase after him for 10 more minutes. The reel handled amazingly and I would recommend it to anyone.

Got the reel today. Need it for fishing for trout in a lake. Needed it to cast a mile, put 6lb Stren Magnatjin on it and a 1/4 oz kastmaster spoon on and went out to my local lake to try it out. It cast 60yds easily into a 15-20 mph wind. Quite happy with it and super smoothe. Only doubt is plastic drag cover will have to see how it holds up. This is my first ever Shimano reel.

At the price I paid, this is the best smoking deal on a fishing reel around. I have a Stradic which is getting old but is stlll a stellar reel. However the increase in features over the Sahara is not worth the price differential.

Been buying Shimano Reels for 20 years+. Just bought 5 of these and it seems Shimano needs to reevaluate their quality control. One of the reel handles I could not get to tighten down. After looking, the square plastic nut on the threaded portion of the handle was too long as they installed the wrong size causing it not to screw in all the way. A second reel was missing the washer on the handle causing it to tighten down too much. Fortunately I have plenty of Shimano reels in the parts bin so I was able to use old parts to get them to work but definitely not the quality I've seen in the past. The sahara reels are as smooth as the stratic and symmetre for a lot less money but maybe they need to quit having them made in third rate factories.

Reel is nice, spins freely. No good for ice fishing outside with braid. Line freezes and gets caught in the bail and the drag wouldn't work properly. Can't wait to try it this summer.
