Questions about Abu Garcia Abumatic 170 Spincast
Q:
Right or left handed?
Answer: Right handed
Q:
Does this reel come in it's original box with papers?
Answer: Yes it comes in a box with papers
Answer: Yes, the one I recurved did...
Q:
Is this the new model 170 ?
Q:
Where is this reel made?
Answer: Made in China
Q:
Is this listed as a "Heavy Duty" reel, and what is the recommended line test
Answer: I have a pair of these as my go to bass fishing reels. I have 12 pound mono on one with my 6' medium rod and 20 pound mono on my 6.5' medium heavy rod. I've only had two line breaks - both on the 12 pound with huge pickerel slicing it right at the boat. The reels are great with the best and easiest drag setup of any spincast reels I've ever owned. And that's a lot of reels.
Answer: Line is already spooled on the line.
Q:
Can reel be used on top of rod instead of underneath as shown
Answer: Absolutely. I’ve never used one of mine on the bottom. I don’t know how you would push the button to release the line. Give the Pflueger reels a look. After getting one of them I’ve never purchased another Abumatic.
Answer: Yes, we use it on the top of the rod!!
Answer: Yes. I use it on the top for my sons reel
Answer: Yes make sure it is a right handed unit says on description.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Can you put braid on these reels?
Answer: Didn’t get to use mine much line kept tingling on the black Cap that holds the spoon in
Answer: Yes, I put it on mine.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Is the abu garcia abumatic reversible? (i.e. can it be changed from right to left hand operaation)
Answer: No it’s not reversible, I have 4 of them the oldest is 15 years can’t beat them
Q:
What's the difference between the 170 and 170-C?
Answer: Don't really known but 170 looks & feels good in the hand but has a very poor drag. sold mine for 5.00 dollars

Product reviews of Abu Garcia Abumatic 170 Spincast
Randy Ferraro : Still the best spincasting reel on the market.
Well I have to say, trying to find a high quality spincast reel in today's market is darn near impossible. I have tried all the current models, and this is the one I kept. The star drag is great, but it took a bit to wear in. It was super touchy at first, but finally broke in after about 15-20 catches. I am used to fishing Johnson Century reels, and unfortunately there is nothing as smooth and enjoyable on the current spincast market. All my old Johnson reels are worn and tired. I can hardly stand the mushy rubbery feel of the Zebco 33 cast lever, they are not like the old 33s. My Silvercast jams the line up every few casts and has birdnested far more frequently than any spincast ever should. Stripped the pot metal gears on quite a few Shakespeares on hang ups. My wife got me this Abumatic for Christmas, and though it is not ideal, it is still the best spincast out there. The real problem in this market is the (bad) attitude of most fisherman claiming that spincast reels are for beginners only, or that they are a disposable product. This attitude is reflected by reel manufacturers in their poor quality offerings. The reality is that I fished some of my Johnson reels for up to 20 years. There is no beating the precision and trouble free casting from a good spincast reel. I know how to use spinning and baitcasters, got good at casting some old Penns and an Abu Seven, but even the occasional birdsnest (too much beer) makes fishing other types of reels less fun to me. I would gladly pay $100 for a really high end spincast (5 stars), but unfortunatley this is as good as gets. Be careful storing this reel, the retreive handle is soft, too much pressure on it, and it will bend really easily. The retrive feels just ever so slighty gritty. Really the best feature on this reel I like is the up and down levelwind. This essentially makes this sort of a spinning reel in disguise. Also there is a nice deep groove cut on the inside face that keeps the line from slipping past the pins so you don't have to add resistance to the line so often to get it to retrieve after a cast. This may be the best engineered spincast reel I have ever used, but it just lacks that silky smooth and quiet retrieve my old Johnsons had, though this might just be because there is no way to turn off the anti-reverse mechanism. Overall I am satisfied with my Abumatic 170 performance.

Elida Macouzet : Pulling the line back
I am having a hard time trying the pull the line back once I have tossed it.
Karl F : Let down
I purchased this reel because I fell in love with my son's Abumatic S and wanted something better. The reel looks great but the release button was finicky and the line spooled was brittle. Seemed to be dry rotted and had damage on the body. If it worked it would've been great but it was a total let down
Amy Gray : Great reel!!
After a line change and a little grease, it works great, I even bought a second. Never stop making this reel!!
Bass Fisher : Unhappy
The reel failed within a week after return window closed
carlos c. trevino : So so. Wouldnt buy.
Not very happy with this product. Casting is ify, and if you do get a cast. Its not very far. Even swithched the line. No change. Dissapointed. And not worth the cost.

Randy : Four Stars
Decent for a spincaster.
Elida Macouzet : Pulling the line back
I am having a hard time trying the pull the line back once I have tossed it.
T3GunWorks : Good real from Abu Garcia
Good real from Abu Garcia, a little underpowered compared to the Daiwa GC120's. Still a good reel for light fishing. Perfect for the beginner.
carlos c. trevino : So so. Wouldnt buy.
Not very happy with this product. Casting is ify, and if you do get a cast. Its not very far. Even swithched the line. No change. Dissapointed. And not worth the cost.

Bryan : Arrived broken inside
It showed up broken internally, looked great outside but the gears inside were broken
Dora Miller : I like it
I like it
J.C. Campton : Will build your casting arm !
Performs great ! Like the reel alot . Only down fall is it's heavy and I mean heavy !
Electrovan : Not Like The Old Models
Had one of these when I was a kid and it lasted for ever. So I bought one for my wife 18 months or so ago. The first one lasted a few months before it quit reeling. I sent it in for repair and they sent me a brand new one. My wife only uses it a few times a year. Yesterday we were fishing and the entire reel locked up. Opened it up but there wasn't a darn thing I could do to fix it. This time it went straight in the trash. I've got a couple Garcia rods I love (Villain 2.0 and an Ike model cranking rod). But I'm done with their less expensive reels. I have some high dollar casting reels, but they're Lews, 13 Fishing, and Shimano. I'm now a little leary of Garcia reels.
Danny Lewis : for a 50$ reel you cant do any better.
has worked flawlessly, for a 50$ reel you cant do any better.
