Questions about KastKing Royale Legend GT Baitcasting Reels, New Low Profile Design Fishing Reel, Magnet Braking System, 17.6 Lbs Carbon Fiber Drag, 5+1 Shielded Stainless Steel Bearings
Q:
What kind of rod would be good with this reel?
Answer: I have two these reels spooled with 150 yds 30 lb. Power pro slick braided line, both are mounted on lite pro ugly sticks rated for 8-20 line and medium action. This combination is hard to beat at any price. I have 6 feet of 20 lb. Fluorocarbon as the tippet. Use uni-knots to secure tippet to braided line.
Answer: Shakespeare 6.5' gx2 ugly stick works terrific and is affordable. The rod and reel pair nicely together.
Answer: Hello Christian, any casting rod from 6 to 7.5 ft in a medium to medium heavy would be Ideal. KastKing has both all purpose and species specific rods that will match your reel perfectly.
Answer: i have 2 of these reels on Kastking rods they work terrific and nice balanced package. I have a frogging rod and a crankbait rod with they Kastking Legend reel here are the numbers worth every penny http://www.kastking.com/fishing-rods/
Answer: I recomend the entsport 2 piece with 3 top pieces 7'. I have used the two and they are perfect
Answer: Abu Garcia 6'6" Vendetta
Q:
how do you prevent squeaking of the gears? Should you oil it or something?
Answer: Hello Lorin, are you sure it is the gears that are squeaking? One drop of oil goes a long way if you can identify the exact location of the squeaking. Gears normally are lubricated with grease while bearings and other moving parts are lubricated with oil.
Q:
Can it handle a 20lb line?
Answer: You probably need to go with braid if your loading 20# test line. Since it holds 165 yards of 12# mono my guess is you could only load about half that with 20# mono. Spider wire has a killer braid called invisi-braid that is supposed to be almost invisible. This reel will accept braid line as well as mono.
Answer: I would think so, I use 12 and 20 is not that much thicker.
Q:
What would be a good rod to go on for this reel?
Answer: Depends what you're fishing with. Check out the kastking royal legend rod.
Answer: can this reel fit on a crixus 6 ft 6 rod
Answer: Get a uglystick gx2. Low cost and they'll last.
Q:
Is it easy to load the string?
Answer: Yes, the string is easy to load
Answer: Just typical of any baitcast reel. Loading string is straightforward.
Answer: I haven't ever had trouble spooling these up. If you have trouble with other bait casters, these won't be any different. Feed the line in, tie it around the spool, and start winding it on.
Answer: Yes. I if you have never done it check YouTube for a video on the correct way to install the line
Answer: It’s not too hard.
Q:
Is this good to go straight out of the box, or should I oil the gears up first?
Answer: It had oil on it straight out the box but added some..and it still would cast bad quite often
Answer: Hi there,
Answer: I didn't, others have,I really don't see the need, but there are people who would rather play with gear than fish.Tight lines.
Answer: Mine was good to go but it never hutrs to put a few drops in there
Answer: Just use it.
Answer: Libricate first
Q:
Could this reel be used for steelhead or king salmon?
Answer: you could! but you would be under gunned for the big boys. This is a great reel for crappie to big large mouth bass.
Answer: Dont buy this reel, it broke on me on the first fish I caught, buy an Abu Silver Max or for bit more money, a Lew's SLP Speed Spool, I own both, they are both superior...to a cheaply nade KastKing.
Answer: Most definitely...
Q:
What type of break is it?
Answer: It has a magnetic break. Works fine for me.
Answer: The Royale Legend GT reel has only magnetic brakes, no centrifugal brakes like the Royale Legend reel which was discontinued.
Answer: Dual. Magnetic and centrifugal.
Q:
does it come with a pouch case just like the pictures show
Answer: Hello Jason, There was a limited run of the reel covers. The picture of the cover was posted by a customer and not by us. There is no mention of the cover in the listing.
Answer: I received mine two days ago and it had a cover in the box
Q:
what are the dimensions of the bearings?
Answer: Main Gear Shaft SUS Shield 8 X 14 X 4 , SUS Shield 5 X 9 X 3
Q:
I have pics of these reels in red. But not on amazon. Where can I get one in that color?
Answer: The Red one is the KastKing Royale and had a lower gear ratio than the Royale Legend. It has been upgraded and will be availible soon.
Q:
Will this reel handle bubble bass?
Answer: don't know what a bubble bass is
Q:
What gear ratios are available and in stock?
Answer: I think 7.1.1 and a 6.4.1
Q:
Is there a way you could put reel grips on this reel
Answer: Some of the over wrap grips will work.
Q:
all the pictures show a blackish reel but the customer pictures show a red reel what color does this reel come in and can you tell what color you get?
Answer: Mine is red but the reel is a good one if you don't fish alot I go 3+ times a week and the gears stripped about 9 months after I got the reel but it was a good reel for the price
Answer: A maroon red finish. Buy it and have a good teacher on how to use it. I have two and will be buying two more from KastKing.
Answer: The Royale Legend is black with red highlights. Looks awesome. The Kastking Royale is all red maroon and is a little cheaper than the Legend model. It has a lower gear ratio and weighs a little more than the Legend.
Answer: Black and red
Q:
Will customer service ever answer emails or phone calls? Because I've been trying for a while
Answer: I called and left a message. A product specialist called me the next day and not only answered my question but offered other advise as I was new to baitcasters having always used spinning reels. So I have to rate their customer service A+. Sorry to hear you had a different experience.
Answer: i didnt try to ask anybody, just seach in the web before i ordered
Q:
What is the "pull&turn" lever for?
Answer: Its the Cover the is used to remove the spool and disassemble the reel for tuning, maintenance or setting up.
Answer: To open side plate and adjust braking system
Answer: To open the side cover
Q:
Can I combine kastkingroyale legend whitemax reel with an uglysticks rod
Answer: Yes

Answer: Yes the retrieve is left hand
Answer: Yes, the left handed version is left handed retrieve.
Q:
The reviewers claim they have received a cover for their reel with their package, but mine did not come with one. Is this supposed to be included?
Answer: Mine did not come with a cover but I also don't remember the add saying it would. Doesn't matter to me since I really like the reel.
Answer: you are lucky if you receive the cover, the one that I purchase comes without, but the information on the amazon, doesn't call for that cover, probably is a gift not mentioned!!!
Answer: Yes cover is included
Answer: I did not get one either, however, I did get the promotion for discounted line. I think that's the replacement.
Answer: I got one with mine, but did not get operating manual until I sent email. They promptly sent me manual.
Q:
I some how lost my control cap how can I get one without buying a new reel?
Answer: Sorry, I don't know.. I would suggest calling Kastking toll free. good Luck!
Answer: I would think Kastking would sell you that part.
Q:
How many inches of line per crank does it take in
Answer: I can't answer your question specifically because it will vary due to spool and handle size. But at 5.3 to 1 gear Ratio this reel is considered low speed and high power and will take in 20-24 inches per hannde turn. Most appropriate for deep diving crankbaits, big bladed spinnerbaits and swimbaits. Also if your fising for big fish like snook, redfish, catfish or carp this would be the gear Ratio for you.. hope this info helps.
Answer: The white Max takes 5.3 in / crank depending on how full the spool is. The Royal Legend takes 7 in / crank also depending on how full the school is. I have both real and so far and pleased with both of them.
Answer: 27 inches with a full spool
Answer: I bought my Grandson a left handed reel-- I didn't realize there was a left and right-- he uses right-- can I change the the handle?
Q:
Does anyone's reel buzz a lot when casting? I just got this reel and was surprised by the amount of noise it makes when casting.
Answer: All bait casting reels with metal gears and parts can be a bit noisy. Turn the reel upside down and put a drop of oil on the worm gear and make shure the reel and its parts are clean and lubricated.
Answer: Yeah, that's normal. If it annoys you turn the magnetic brake, or the nob on the opposite side of the handle, to a higher setting. Make sure you pull in the switch under it while you turn it though.
Q:
Can u use it in saltwater
Answer: U can but make sure it's cleaned after
Q:
I bought a right handed reel; i prefer a left hand reel since i am right handed. i have not used this reel, how to i exchange?
Answer: No I got what I needed because I'm a lefty
Q:
What are the use differeces between mono & braided line?......pros & cons of both, are there any?
Answer: Braid has no give where mono stretches. When using treble hooks ,mobo helps by not pulling out of the fishes mouth. Braid will with no stretch. Braid works in heavy weeds to pull fish out and will cut grass as well
Q:
hows the reel holding up to the saltwater guys ?
Q:
Is this the white max 2?
Answer: Yes it is.
Q:
When will the left hand Royale Legend be restocked?
Answer: Typically restocks on Amazon happen every 3-4 weeks.
Q:
Does this reel have an instant anti-reverse?
Answer: Yes & works great
Answer: YES
Answer: Yes
Q:
What is the difference between this reel and the Spartacus reel by KastKing? Im new to baitcasting and noticed they are the same price.
Answer: The Spartacus has a more compact body shape with an advanced centrifugal braking system. The gear ratio is different as well. The Royale Legend has a 7.0:1 while the Spartacus has a 6.3:1 gear ratio.
Answer: is there really that much difference between a 7:01 retrieve and a 6.3:1
Answer: The king has dual braking stystem, easy fine tune magnetic brake 7:01 fast line retrieve. Hope this helps.
Q:
Pedí el carrete para embobinado derecho y me llegó izquierdo... ya pedí el reemplazo pero quiero estar seguro que llegará derecho
Q:
I bought this reel and the braking system seems to be shot. Has nyone else had similar issues?
Answer: I had same problem- drag on mine was horrible from the first day. Back to Revo for me. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Answer: No, but you should contact KastKing. All KastKing products have a one year warranty.
Q:
Is there a flipping switch?
Answer: Not sure what you mean by switch. At the back of the real there is thumb release that you push down to release the spool and cast.
Q:
Is it push button ?
Answer: Yes it is a push button reel.
Answer: If by push button you mean like a closed face spinning reel, then no. The button Releases the spool and the spool must be held once depressed.
Answer: It has a spool release lever, and it's a low profile bait casting reel. Not like a push button spincast reel
Answer: Yes
Q:
Has anyone have a problem with the retrieve and kind hoping more or less not a smooth a retrieve very herky jerky ?
Answer: I have four of these. Two were gifts/ Two I purchased. They are the smoothest reals, I’ve ever used or owned. I’ve never experienced the jerky retrieve. All of mine are the smoothed. I do keep mine cleaned and oiled
Answer: No. I have no problem. It's very smooth.
Answer: I have two Royale reels, in changing the centrificale switches inside cover i noticed that. Put the switches back to the out ward position you will be fine. I really enjoy mine !!!!
Q:
Is something wrong because my reel keeps on backreeling causing me to backlash
Answer: If your using braided line you must first put a backing of monofilament about 4 to 5 rounds or the braid will slip causing the backlash. Also you must adjust the reel for your lure weight by using the small knob under the handle. It must free fall at a slow steady pace. And you must also stop the lure before it hits the water.
Answer: I had the same problem, but you just have too keep messing with adjustment settings on the reel. After about 20 minutes of different setting trials I got the reel right. Be patient its a good product, at a great value
Answer: I switched to braided line on both my kastking reels and after I did that I haven't had a problem.
Answer: I found that the magnetic brake isn't strong enough alone to slow the spool down so what I did was take off the cover and set the second set of brakes and I haven't had a single problem after that
Answer: One you have adjusted all three drag systems to the weight of the lure you are throwing, you still need to impart some pressure on your spool with your thumb at the end of the each cast.
Q:
Does the reel come with a cover?
Answer: Hello CJ, No, but the next batch should.
Answer: Mine did
Answer: Yes
Q:
Can this reel pull in small tuna?
Q:
Do I need to add electric tape or something it’s braided ready?
Answer: No tape is needed. Have used them for braided, fluorocarbon, and mono. Great eel for the money.
Q:
Hello .i have a visa gift card ($50.00).i am trying to buy this whitemax but I am getting charged for shipping when the description says fee shipping.
Q:
would this fit on an 6 fort 6 inches ugly stik elite?
Answer: Yes. Make sure you buy the casting model, not the spinning model.
Q:
does reel have bait click?
Answer: Hi John,
Answer: No it does not.
Q:
What is the max lbs of line
Q:
Would this reel fit an ugly stick gx2 rod?
Answer: Not familiar with that rod. But it is a normal size low profile bait cast reel. I use on 7 ft skeeter Reese rods.
Answer: The only thing about those reel are the base is plastic and with flex. The two I got I use plastic tie to hold them thigher. They cast far and reel in smooth. I wish the base was metal. Not sure if this help. I don't know about your rod base seem normal lenght
Answer: Yes, the reel seat a a standard 2.5 inches and would fit on most casting rods.
Answer: I have it mounted on a medium-heavy 6 1/2' GX2. Works great.
Q:
would the whitemax become corroded easily if used in saltwater?
Answer: No...they're saltwater resistance...
Answer: I think it can be okay if clean with fresh water when after using saltwater fishing. I'm using like that.
Answer: I don’t fish in salt water but I would assume that it would, kastking does have a saltwater reel in the Spartacus Maximus I believe
Answer: KastKing has a Q&A page on their website.
Q:
Would this be a good reel for catfish?
Answer: That's exactly what I use it for. It's a fantastic reel and performs like those that cost several times as much.
Answer: Hello Joshua, that depends on the size of the catfish you are targeting. If you are catching big cats I would take a look at the Spartacus Maximus.
Answer: I am mostly a bass fisherman but I don't see any reason it wouldn't be. The retrieve is fast and it handles a heavy load.
Q:
How many yards of 40 lb kastking braid will this reel hold?
Answer: The KastKing Royale Legend will hold around 110 Yards of 40# braid.
Answer: You should be fine with 15-20 feet, this reel won’t cast much further.
Q:
Does kastking make any saltwater approved baitcasters?
Answer: Hello Bryce, the KastKing Spartacus Maximus is salt water approved.
Answer: Hello Bryce, Yes the KastKing Spartacus maximus is built for salt water.
Q:
Do i need a bait casting rod for this or can i just trade this out on my spinning reel rod? Im trying to move away from the spinning reel
Answer: I would definitely purchase a Bait casting rod. Thing to remember the more your reel is inline with the rod eyes the better your casting and performance of the rod will be. I tried my Bait Caster on a spinning rod and the distance and accuracy went down considerably. Hope this helped.
Answer: Yes, you'll need a baitcasting rod. I would steer clear of this baitcaster though. I've had 3 of this particular model and all failed within a year of purchase. I suggest that you buy a Piscifun Torrent instead. My wife has used one for 3 years without the slightest bit of trouble.
Answer: You should get a bait casting rod for greater accuracy.
Answer: It's made for a baitcasting rod
Answer: Need baitcaster.
Answer: It should mount but the mounting location will be higher up and the guides will be a different size
Answer: You can use the pole that you have
Product reviews of KastKing Royale Legend GT Baitcasting Reels, New Low Profile Design Fishing Reel, Magnet Braking System, 17.6 Lbs Carbon Fiber Drag, 5+1 Shielded Stainless Steel Bearings

I bought this reel in February and right out the packaging it looked nice..I spooled it 17lb line and the first cast it sounded dry and cheap. I thought may it needs lubricant but that didn’t work. So bout a month later I picked it up again and tried it out. It worked perfect. I took it to the lake a couple of time and caught a couple of fish on it. So I thought I just had to work it in. Not the case this past weekend I couldn’t even fish with it. It only cast about 10 yards while making a dry sound. I wouldn’t buy this product again because I can’t get in touch with the company
axmsw : so far, excellent reel
ordered/rec'd two of these reels. sturdy packaging, thorough instructions, and stylist product. matched the reels to 7' bait-casting rod by KastKing - nice pairing. smooth action on release, solid feel and response on strikes.
my hope is i get 3 to 5 years out of these reels.
also, the reels came with survey monkey cards indicating promotional braided line however KK requires an order number other than amazon's thus preventing one from completing the survey and obtaining (in my case 2) the braided line spool(s).
subculture fan : Average lifespan.. 6 mos.
Fun reels at first they cast a mile and seem great. If I had written this review at 1 month in I would have given 5 stars. But durability is the real test so I waited. I've had two now and one completely quit at about 6 mos and the other is starting to make some really ugly noises at about the same time frame. It will die soon. And it's just not worth getting it repaired (if anyone in the U.S. can.) So if you think you might use it a lot or want to buy a reel that will actually last then spend a few $ more and get a lews or shimano now instead of having to just having to buy a better reel later. The reel itself is probably worth more than one star but it's the terrible investment that I'm voting on. Please vote this as helpful I really would have loved to have known this.
Jennifer : Dead in 3 months, and warranty refused?!?
Ok some explanation is needed here. I got an old 9 foot fly fishing pole from a garage sale. The lower 3 feet or so were so chipped up i could not save it. So i trimmed it down and made a conversion to a light weight ultra short (4.5 feet) sight fishing rod. I took it out the first time and got a bite from a rather large bass, it actually broke the cheap walmart spinner reel I originally put on there. So i decided i wanted to put something stronger on it to land some stronger fish. This baitcaster reel had amazing reviews, and a far better price tag for a stupid little project pole, so i went for it. Took it out with this new reel last week, and after about an hour of birdsnests and adjustments, i figured it out. With about 1/16 oz weight i am launching my lures and bait almost twice as far as my high end spincaster setup.
I got the left handed reel because I'm so used to reeling in with my left hand (raised on spinners). I absolutely love this reel, and will probably buy another few to teach my kids on.
Update: i have had this reel for a while now, a month or two. I fish often, a few days a week. And I actually ended up buying a Diawa med-heavy fast action rod, and this reel was AMAZING on it. After throwing this for a while, and landing a handful of bass only up to 4 lbs max, i am now facing an issue. After opening the bail, spinning the handle no longer closes the bail. I have to thumb the bail closed. Rather disappointing. I actually loved this reel, i know i used the crap out of it in the time i have had it, but i would have thought it would last at least one full season.
5 stars down to 3. Still a great starter baitcaster. But no longevity, and definitely not as rugged as i had hoped.
UPDATE #2)
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT, and especially DO NOT BUY THE WARRANTY!!
The above mentioned issue i faced with this reel has been passed back and forth between Asurion and Kastking with NO RESOLUTION available.
Asurion will not help because the reel is “covered under Kastkings warranty”, But Kastking is refusing to honor any warranty because “the product was opened”! REALLY?!?! So there is no available warranty, even after paying for an extended 2 year warranty?!? I am so incredibly upset at this. I will have to spend another 30$ to have this 30$ reel service and fixed. ABSOLUTELY NOT, if the companies refuse to make this right, i will refuse to use their product nor have it in my house, it will go in the trash.
SHAME ON YOU KASTKING, SHAME ON YOU ASURION!! Its obvious they only want your money and refuse to stand by their products even after only a few months of use. I am just going to save up and buy a legitimate product from a real reputable company.
Please save yourself a headache and look elsewhere for a good reel. Its not worth it if/when it breaks on you.
Safari Man : Amazing reel for the price!
I have fished for over 40 years all over the world. It used to be that to get a good quality low profile baitcaster you had to mortgage the house. Not any more. I bought two of these reels for a trip to the Amazon. When I got them out of the box I was like, Wow. They are very well built and smooth as glass. I used them for a month and ended up giving them to my guides because I could tell they were drooling over them. They are still using them and catching on them today with no problem. Next time I head out for a hard fish and need good reels that won't let me down, I know exactly what I will be ordering. These reels right here.
Rio Sandate : VERY FORGIVING SPOOL FOR VIRTUALLY NO BACKLASH!
Smooth casting, VERY FORGIVING!!, Little to no adjustments when switching from weighted 2oz swimbaits to weightless senkos! I will DEFINITELY be buying more Kastking Reels! Youtube has a plethora of videos trying to get these reels to blacklash, as well as Kastking's own PR videos. Did I mention it can launch anything a mile? I mean it, ANYTHING! I throw small 3-6 inch finesse plastics up to Savage Gear glidebaits and it just doesnt care, it will launch!
Its not worth it if/when it breaks on you.
bslow47 : After learning how to set up it was flawless!!
I'm basically a beginner bait caster.....I have had a bait caster years ago but never really was comfortable with it. When I was viewing KastKing's legend reel most of the posts were positive except for a few. When I read the negative posts I was thinking the posters were morons. I get the ones that receive one that was defective but the others that can't figure out how to cast it. I know, its like the kettle calling the pot black...Upon the positive reviews, I purchased the Legend. Everything came as advertised. I viewed a video on how to set up the reel. So I set the tension knob correctly and maxed out the magnet setting. I put a few bell weights on the end of my line and practiced out in the back yard. All went well.....
First time fishing I went to a tank/pond which I usually do when fishing. I back lashed more times than not. Pleased, I was not. I remembered a post about a person sending it back because he back lashed every cast. Now I have to eat crow because I now too had several bad casts.
I went back to viewing videos on how to set up a bait caster I found another video, on the legend and proceeded to watch. I discovered that I did not set the mags correctly or rather not at all. So I turned all the magnets on and set the dial to max. The beginner setting more or less.
My second trip was back to the tank/pond and the thing was casting flawless!! Into the wind, down wind, under hand, over hand, light lures, heavy lures. I was probably now casting 95% without back lash. When I did back lash it was because I did something stupid. The back lash was now a thing of the past. I was more confident with each cast.
I would recommend this reel to a friend.
I was using the left hand reel and I am right handed.
I attached to a 6'6" med/Heavy action rod
I am using 12lb. mono because I wanted to learn how to cast it before I bought braid.
I reccomend watching videos on how to set it up.........
NewEnglander : This reel taught me how to use a baitcaster!
I'm new to baitcasting and I am still practicing, whenever I get a chance. So, how do I know this is a good baitcaster if I haven't fished with it yet?
First, I bought a baitcaster reel+rod combo for $85 in Walmart, about 2 years ago, because I really wanted to get in to learn baitcasting. It is a brand name, most fishermen would recognize, I won't say no more, because they do have excellent products, but some of the gear, what they make is just horrifyingly bad. So as a beginner, I started practicing on that and of course, all I was getting was backlashes and it just felt so useless and cheap. The entire practice was just a major frustration and I completely given up trying to learn and the rod+reel combo ended up in my garage and swore that I will never touch it again.
This year, I changed my mind after watching others and here I am with 30+ years of fishing experience, but can't use a baitcaster. So I took the reel off the rod, and bought one of these. Still didn't want to get anything pro with 4x the price of this, because I was afraid, that this will also ends up in the garage or the trash and didn't want to waste to much money.
Amazingly after like 20min (and after a couple of youtube videos), I started to get it. Of course I got some backlashes and my accuracy is way off, but this reel is just excellent and feels waaay better than the other brand-name /more expensive one! After a few days of practice now, I feel confindent to cast in short distances and my accuracy is improving to a point, that it almost feel like I got Jedi powers and I can hit individual beer cans from 50 feet!
Lesson learned...brand name and expensive options may not guarantee quality.
Russell Reid : not good
Had previously written a favorable review but now changing my opinion. I currently own 9 KastKing reels and a couple of rods. Three of these reels are the Royale Lengend GT. All are working great except 2 of the GTs. They were delivered to me 9/8/21 and were great at first. The first one started making a terrible grinding noise when cast and retrieved. Took it apart to oil it and did not help. Took apart and gain thinking reel grease may do the trick. Nope, still rough and noisy. Cannot stand to use it. Now a second GT is doing the same thing. Afraid the 3rd will go next. Will be contacting KastKing to see if they stand behind their products. Would not recommend the Royale Legend GT
metrocopper : Kast King is King
What I like about the reels from Kast King is the affordability with features of lager more expensive bait casters. I like to use my reel in my right hand to cast because I'm using spinning reels also to fish. Kast King offers the reels in both left and right hand casting for the same price. Amazon got it to me in 2 days since it was in stock and not on back order. I still have to spool the reel and get it to the river, but I don't think that will be a problem at all. I'm sure this reel will work just as fallible as the other Kast King reels I have.
Jacob Charlton : Best Budget Bait Caster On The Market
Great reel. I had the older model for a couple years and it held up well, they are only 40 bucks so why not get the new model? The newer reel has an improved spool assembly and matte finish on the red. Looks really slick. But it also performs well. Has great smooth bearings and a sweet magnetic brake system. Overall super bang for your buck. Pair it with a 35 dollar cherrywood Berkley rod and you got yourself a sweet combo under a hundred bucks.
HC : Great for beginners!
Although I heard it is hard to use, I have always wanted to try the Baitcasting Reels. I bought this reel on Oct 28th following recommendation from a friend. The delivery of the product was quick. I set up the reel with the15lb KastKing FluoroKote Line and fit it to a 6ft ML rod.
As a beginner, I didn't know what to expect the next day, Oct 31st, when I went to Indian Lake, Ohio for fishing. Following the manual, I set the Tension and Magnetic Braking. The initial practice was done on the lawn next to the parking lot with a 1/2oz egg sinker. After a few light backlash, I was able to make some smooth casts with fair accuracy and distance. It was the time to put it into real action.
The lure was a 1/2 unpainted jig tipped with either a grub or a big joshy. The target fish was Saugeye. The drag was set to a medium to low level. Once fishing started, most of my attention was paid to make successful casts. The bite was fairly good that evening. After one and half hour, I landed 3 Saugeyes. One of them was a 20inch. It made a pretty good run after hook was set, the drag was smooth and effective. I have attached some pictures taken that evening.
You can imagine how happy I was. I have no experience to judge if this reel is better than any other bait casting reels on the market. But it is amazing to me how well and quickly it got me started on a whole new fishing experience. I would recommend this to my friends.
Rakita : Great reel !
I bought this for my 21 yr old son for his birthday. He's still a beginner with a baitcaster but he's doing great with this reel. Most reels in this price range have horrible brake systems. This one breaks that rule. It cast smooth and long. It's quiet and light. It's small enough to easily fit in your palm. I was reading online that this reel and it's black colored counterpart are rated as the 3rd best reel under $100. I agree with that. Personally, I've been using Shimano Curado reels for over 20 yrs. This compares favorably to them. I'd have no qualms at all about using this reel exclusively. Highly recommended !
BandCamp : Use braid for best results.
I waited a few months before reviewing the Royale Legend. It took me a while to adjust to this reel. I spent hours casting in the yard trying to set this thing. I first started with 12lb mono, but couldn't get the hang of it. Terrible birdsnests every time. Brakes were adjusted all the way up too. I refused to give up on it, seeing how beginners are enjoying this reel; I should be able to also. I adjusted my form, and it helped a little. Then, I decided to re-spool it with 30lb braid. This made all the difference. I can now fling it farther than any Abu Garcia reel I own. It casts amazingly. I have been slaying my local ponds every time. Just yesterday, this reel landed a total of 15 bass into my kayak. I have had brand loyalties to Abu Garcia for years, but I really love this reel. The foam grips feel great in the hand. It's really pretty too. I have just this minute ordered a KastKing Speed Demon reel, and can't wait to fish it.
Mountain Wanderer : Smooth reel
I am new to bait casting reels and fishing with bait casting. Yet, I have been reviewing a great deal of YouTube viewing while I wait for ice out. I was impressed with the presentTion of this reel and decided to take a chance and purchase it. I have also bought a reel with a price tag of over 4X’s.
I spooled this reel with 50# braid so I could practice long casts as well as shorter pitching. Wow, this reel performs very nicely...it is extremely smooth. I am using it with two of the internal brakes engaged and think after I gain more experience I will be able to disengage them for even longer casts.
Currently I am using light Texas Rigged Zoom worms which are light...a jig or chatter bait would fly with this reel. I have yet to match it with a good (or better) rod. Once I learn more about rods with micro guides I will. I suspect once matched up this will be a great combo
I would have given the rating 5 stars if I had a chance to use it fishing
Buy it!!!
The Professor : Great reel for the price - comparable to my more expensive reels
I have used this KastKing Royale Legend/Whitemax on one occasion so far. I loaded it with 50lb braid. It is a smooth reel - especially for the price. I am relatively new to baitcasting. I was amazed that I have yet to have a backlash of any kind with this reel (not true of my Daiwa or Lews baitcasters although they are fine reels too). So far, I am pretty impressed with this reel.
UPDATE: I have now used this reel on saltwater too. I almost NEVER backlash this reel - even on sloppy casts where I would expect it. This reel continues to amaze me. It is my favorite light baitcaster even over more expensive name brands that cost much more. I am ordering another because it works great! I am going to put the money I save in a higher end rod instead.
Alakar : Worth the money
This is my first casting reel and I'm really satisfied with the purchase. Gears and bearings seem to be super smooth and overall fit and finish is excellent. I've only been able to take it out in the backyard to test it out, but I've been able to cast it pretty well without birds nesting it. Can't wait to get it out on the water. I was going to ding it one star for the composite body, but at this price point I really can't. Seems to be a great reel.
Kayak Fishing Addict : Budget Reel That Works
I've had two of these reels. The first one developed an issue with the reel not catching the gears to start cranking the line in. The handle would just spin but no line would retrieve. KastKing's superior customer service then replaced that reel for me. I still caught lots of fish with it! The replacement reel has developed an issue too, albeit a different one. The button that you depress to cast the reel, at times, won't depress. I have to futz around with the handle in order to get the button to depress. I haven't contacted customer support regarding this issue as although it's annoying, I'm still catching lots of fish with it. All in all, this seems like a budget reel that works...perhaps I just got a bad batch?
metrocopper : Kast King is King
What I like about the reels from Kast King is the affordability with features of lager more expensive bait casters. I like to use my reel in my right hand to cast because I'm using spinning reels also to fish. Kast King offers the reels in both left and right hand casting for the same price. I'm sure this reel will work just as fallible as the other Kast King reels I have.
Ride.hard : Pleasantly surprised with the quality and feel.
This company is so legit I have to leave a review. I was looking for a new baitcaster to throw on an old rod that I had but didnt want to pay $99-149 for the basic ones at cabelas. I didn't want a super cheap one either, so I was skeptical to try this one out thinking it was made with cheap parts. Sure there is some plastic on it, but the main components seem super high quality! This feels like the $100+ reels in the store without the price tag! My father-in-law came up from Florida to do some kayak fishing with me and fell in love with this reel. He just told me that he bought one too and caught a bass the same day out in his pond with it. So I figured id right a little review, if its good enough for him, and for me, I'm sure anyone who tries it will love it. Super high value and high quality. I am going to save up and pick up some of their other reels but for now, this thing slams fish.
Tony : Easy casting and smooth as silk!
I tried this once... hit the wrong button and everything disappeared... old folks and technology, go figure. I didn't know whether I wanted to try a bait casting reel or not. I remember my experience as a kid... Not Good! Back lashes, birds nests whatever you want to call them, I had 'em! I don't know if I just lucked out... the technology has improved that much or what. This reel casts like a dream. Oh, it'll still back lash if you're not careful, but a little research... a few videos... YouTube " Using a bait casting reel" (sorry Amazon, but they did help a lot and led to a good review of this great reel!)
This thing is as smooth as silk! I bought 30lb. braided line here at Amazon (suggestion from a video, no line memory like mono-filament. Very smooth casting.) I very much recommend this reel... and for the price... perfect!
K. Deal : Has a lot of problems
I've had the fee for about 1.5 years now and think I've used it long enough to confidently not recommend it. It started having problems shortly after buying it; it would buzz loudly and cast much shorter after using it for an hour or so. There has always been a grinding feeling when reeling which reduces smoothness. And just recently it has been humming very loudly and high pitched while casting.
My brother uses an Abu Garcia Black Max and has had none of these issues. I recommend the Black Max over this reel 100x. But if I'm being honest, it's not worth spending this little amount of money on a caster. Wait a week or two and save up a little more for a much nicer reel like an Abu Garcia Pro Max or Shimano Caenan.
Melissa : Great reel for the price!
I have always been satisfied with my purchases of Kastking products, and this is no different! Love the handle knobs. It reminds me of the high end Shimano and Daiwa handles. The reel is pretty smooth, not rough. It is not equal to high end reels, so don’t expect that. I took this reel out in my back yard to do some test cast, and once I got the breaks and spool tension dialed in, I easily casted to the other side of the pool with just some easy casts. Pairs nicely with my Perigee II. Not the best reel for palming, a little bit big. Breaking system is pretty good. No spool porting, despite the fact that many other reels, even in this price range, have that. But oh well, still a good reel for the price. I don’t know about long term performance, but I do know that my other Kastking reel, the Sharky III, has been holding up pretty well. I would recommend this reel to beginners, or just people that don’t fish often or want a cheaper reel.
Russell Reid : not good
Had previously written a favorable review but now changing my opinion. I currently own 9 KastKing reels and a couple of rods. Three of these reels are the Royale Lengend GT. Montgomeryyy : Great reel for the price
I have 2 of these original version reels and 2 of the royal legend2s. I am really pleased with all 4. The version 2 is a little more comfortable in the hand and I like them just a bit more than this original but they are almost identical as far as use. This original version has more bearings 11+1 vs 5+1 and it also has centrifugal breaking with 4 different settings which is better for beginners. I am very pleased with all 4 reels. Also worth adding is I had a Spartacus version of this brand which cost $30 more and didn't like it so I sent it back and got this reel witch I like better.
USA4045 : Affordable, very smooth and easy casting without backlash
The feel of this reel is like more expensive bait casting reels but much more affordable. My 13 year old son wanted a bait casting reel so he saved his money and we researched different models. When buying your first bait casting reel you do not want to waste your money because bait casting reels can be expensive. I own several Ambassadors and a Diawa which all now retail between $150 and $250. Bait casters are great for fishing heavier jigs, spinner baits, crank baits, top water plugs and plastic worms with weights. If you like to fish light weight lures, a spinning reel works better. We decided on this KastKing Royale Legend model. It has been a great reel with the types of baits we use. The anti back lash brake features have made this venture into the bait caster reel world enjoyable for my son. You will always have some back lash when learning this type of reel but this reel makes learning much quicker and easier. We have made several fishing trips with this reel and my son has let me catch several fish with it and we both like. It has proven to be a very good reel. With the good experience with this bait caster, I will be purchasing a KastKing spinning reel to replace one of my worn out spinning reels soon.
B.T.S. : Quality reel, affordable price
Solid build, smooth retrieve, reliable controls. You won't be sorry buying this reel. I had a couple cheap baitcast rigs when I was a teenager and was never impressed with them. A friend recommended I get a better reel and try again. This reel was suggested. It has made me a believer. The controls on this reel are fantastic. Spool resistance adjustment requires little tuning to get results, the drag and retrieve controls are metal, the handle is cushioned and grips well. I can get it setup with free fall drops and 9/10 times that's perfect for casting. Once you're dialed in, you can throw your bait a long ways.
This compares favorably to them. I'd have no qualms at all about using this reel exclusively. Highly recommended !
Fang : Good reel for the price, but has some flaws, which is expected
I have a lot of mid/higher end reels (DC and K, etc) but they are all high speed (8:1+). I needed something slow for winter fishing which this reel seems to be one of the few 5:1 with low-profile left of its breed. When I got it, my first impression is that it is nicely built and looks awesome. However, spooling it needs some attention. I ended up with a lot of line on one side. Granted that this can happen to any reel, I had to respool it three times to get it ok. I haven't used lower costing reel in a while so I have not experienced this since switching over to 200+ dollar reel ranges.
Second issue is casting. If I setup the dials as usual (loose spool, 1/3 magnetic tension) I cannot cast 1/4" jig heads. It'll bird nest. I remedied this by turning the magnetic tension to 8/9 which is almost max (10). Now when casting, I can tell the reel is over worked as the spool slows down dramatically. However, switching to 7 and below creates birdsnest.
My conclusion is that I have to throw heavier weight lures to make it work right. Which kind of sucks because it beats the purpose of me getting this reel for winter fishing where I'll be throwing a lot of light lures to creep at the bottom. However, if I were to use it for heavy weights, Im sure it'll be no problem as I do do a lot of Salmon/Striper fishing. The second and last is the gear ratio. Now I can really creep my lures with the 5:1 ratio without going to sleep when using my high gear ratios for the same job.
Yardley : very well made
Very attractive reel, well manufactured. My only problems may have very well been my fault! I have not owned a bait cast reel since being a sub-teenager and spending much time trying to untangle backlashes after casting out in our farm pond. I assumed that backlashes were a thing of the past and proved myself wrong with not only the first cast but many more afterwards. Then I did the unmanly thing and read the instruction manual supplied with the reel. Evidently I did not load the line with enough tension and did not do the rather complicated adjustments to set the drag, magnetic and centrifugal brakes. I also may not even know how to cast this reel after reading the casting instructions-so if you are like me and starting to get older-get someone younger to set the reel up correctly!
Dendrobate : I’m hooked on Kastking!
I had been hearing a lot about KastKing reels from friends and had seen video reviews on YouTube about how wonderful and affordable they were so I took a chance last year and purchased the Royale Legend baitcasting reel for $40 bucks. Since then, I’ve put this reel to the test and can honestly say I’m very impressed! First, the reel is not only tough and durable but it’s dependable and casts my baits silky smooth with precision. Kastking should have charged $140 dollars for the reel, not $40. I have caught so many bass, catfish, sunfish, and crappie on this dynamic reel, it’s just blown me away. All I can say is, if you’re a serious angler then I urge you to buy a Kastking reel. While I absolutely live the Royale Legend, you can honestly buy any KK reel and be happy. And I should know since I’ve bought 7 more KK reels in the past year. Kastking is for real.
plusco : Fantastic customer support!
I purchased my first KaskKing reals one year ago. The quality was great. I recently purchased two more, and they design had changed, and the quality was not good. Both reals became unusable after one freshwater outing. However, I simply contacted KastKing and they sent me a return package and two new replacement reals. I was very impressed. I assume I just received a bad run on the initial order. Hopefully these will prove better quality. I will follow up if they do not hold up. Given my experience, I would not hesitate to give them a try. For the cost they are a great value.
Jake Blake : Inexpensive....but not cheap!
First of all...I love the price. As a newbie for baitcast reels, I have been reluctant in purchasing any. Your price made it a doable thing for an unknown. Altho I have not had the chance to get in the water with it, I have been trying to tune it for backlashes so I will be ready to take it out....probably within the week. It does have a low profile and feels good in my hand...and I really like the left hand retrieve option in a reel so inexpensive. Thanx for pricing this reel so that it can become part of my fishing experience.
Kate S. : Great Entry Level Baitcaster
I was new to using a Baitcaster and this was my first Baitcaster purchase 6 months ago. I have used it off and on for 3 months and would get frustrated with bird nesting it but kept at it. We just came back from the OBX where I spent 1 week kayak fishing for Speckled trout and puppy drum. On day one I picked up this reel and didn't put it down the entire week. I have certainly fallen in love with using a baitcaster. I reeled in at least 50 trout while I was down there and even a 3ft Houndfish. Overall great trip and I made hundreds of casts with this baitcaster.
That said, it started making a funny noise on about day 4. Everything still works but I think it is nearing its end. I purchased a Abu Garcia Inshore Revo the other day and there is certainly a noticeable difference in quality and performance. I have not put it through the ringer yet though to see how it stands up to time.
If this is your first baitcaster - go for it. Its a nice entry level reel.
JBle : Excellent value - great performance in an inexpensive reel.
I decided to give this reel a try after returning the Piscifun Torrent. My expectations for a $40 baitcasting reel are not super high, but the Torrent developed a grinding noise after only 3 uses. I thought I might have the same experience with the KastKing Royale Legend, but I have been pleasantly surprised. This reel continues to perform flawlessly, even when the operator (me) does not. I have used this reel paired with a Lew's Carbon Fire medium heavy 7 ' rod mostly for saltwater harbor fishing, and some freshwater fishing. I rinse it well after each use, and it continues to work flawlessly. Although the Piscifun gets a ton of good reviews too, in my experience, the KastKing is the way to go.
mkhunt : Horrible - reels hangs when reeling in line.
Ordered reel and got a chance to put it on a new rod. First fishing trip, it developed a catch or hang when reeling in line.
It is like a bad place in the gear, but has gotten worse and worse where it is unusable now. Unfortunately it is past the 30-day Amazon return.
Rick : Great Braking System for Beginners
This was my first bait casting reel, so it had to be super easy to learn and prevent the dreaded birds nest. I had purchased a different brand but returned it because I could not get the brake to work. This reel had a much better braking system and I was soon casting like my old spin cast reel. It did take a little time to understand the magnetic clutch and how to adjust it correctly after I started learning how much pressure to use with my thumb. This was so easy, I purchased the Royal Legend as well. Very pleased with my purchase and I would recommend this reel to any beginner.
Doug : Fantastic! (For four days) sad!
This reel is fantastic! Still can't believe its $40. The quality seems good and it has all the right options you need. I stringed it with 12lb Flourokote line...made a few quick adjustments...and headed out for a few casts. This thing is phenomenal! I never got one birdnest in over 50 casts...even throwing into the wind. The 7:1 retrieve is almost to fast...as I had to slow my cranks, reeling in a crankbait. My optimal settings: Set two switches inside the reel to on, (make sure the are opposite from each other) set you magnetic braking to 5. Adjust the reel tension knob...according to the weight of your lure. (It should just barely fall when you push your release button to cast. It is almost effortless to cast, nearly 40' yard casts with ease, with hardly any thumbing...I think it would be especially good for a beginer baitcaster.
Well that was day 1, day four it broke, on the first bass I caught, the aluminum post that holds the finger grip broke, and the reel started making a washing sound, a reel should last longer then 4 days...:(
Jake Blake : Inexpensive....but not cheap!
Thanx for pricing this reel so that it can become part of my fishing experience.
plusco : Fantastic customer support!

Steve B. : It's ok
I have a lot of baitcasters from higher price-point to lower. Comparing the KastKing to other lower price-point reels to be fair, I will say that it is just OK. It casts fine, the drag is fairly smooth, but the reason for my 3/5 review is that the bail is inconsistent after the cast. Sometimes it engages smoothly, other times it binds and only engages with a very strong crank of the handle. On occasion I couldn't get it to engage nor depress the cast lever to try to reset it. I had to manipulate the spool while turning the handle. This is a pretty big flaw and makes me recommend the Piscifun baitcasters at the same price-point. The KastKing is attractive and looks to be well machined from the outside. The retrieve is fairly smooth when it works right. Maybe I got a bum reel?
Mr. Sir : So good!! Casts for miles!!
This reel is amazing!!! My second baitcast reel so I can only compare it to the Abu blackmax, from a newbie perspective. This reel is larger and slightly heavier than the blackmax. The royale legend has a detent drag wheel so you won’t lose your settings by accident very cool feature. The reel tension wheel doesn’t have a detent but I expect that from a more expensive reel. The casting with 40 lb braid is a dream!! Miles better than the abu, MILES.
The royale legend is better in every single way than the blackmax except for the size. I like how the blackmax is easer to hold while fishing. But Kast king has a reel for that, i’m sure, and i’ll have it! Kast king is the best around!! Buy one, then buy more!
Buy it!!!
Emma : Don't be afraid to buy these
Hope I don't regret my words but these reels are of exceptional quality for the price. I fished for a week solid while on vacation. Caught numerous flounder and redfish up to 30 inches. The reels cast smooth, drags are smooth, bearing run smooth. Thought I was having an issue a couple of days in with internals but found some trash in the line guide. Removed that and it was ok. I purchased two and if they hold up for a few more trips, I will probably buy another one. The only thing that was odd...normally, baitcast reels tend to backlash when throwing light lures. After switching to heavier weight, I had to tighten the brakes a little to keep from having to feather it as I cast. No big deal after I figured out I needed to. Spooled with 15lb Trilene. Held plenty of line.
JR Smith : Excellent baitcaster - product quality good enough that I bought another from this company
This is my second baitcaster reel I purchased, and I will admit I broke my first one (another brand) in frustration of not knowing how to use one. I decided to give it a go using this, and yes, I still had birds nests occasionally, but after reading how to properly do the set up and a good deal of practice, I am becoming quite proficient. I will state that this reel seems well made, and works effortlessly. It has a very fast retrieve. I haven't had any issues with it, and it is easy to clean and maintain. Due to how easy this one was, I did just buy another one from this company, though I switched to a left hand as I wasn't fond of casting with the right and then doing the hand switch. I also went with a slower retrieve ratio based on my preferences.
