Answer: I have two these reels spooled with 150 yds 30 lb. Power pro slick braided line, both are mounted on lite pro ugly sticks rated for 8-20 line and medium action. This combination is hard to beat at any price. I have 6 feet of 20 lb. Fluorocarbon as the tippet. Use uni-knots to secure tippet to braided line.
Answer: Shakespeare 6.5' gx2 ugly stick works terrific and is affordable. The rod and reel pair nicely together.
Answer: Hello Christian, any casting rod from 6 to 7.5 ft in a medium to medium heavy would be Ideal. KastKing has both all purpose and species specific rods that will match your reel perfectly.
Answer: i have 2 of these reels on Kastking rods they work terrific and nice balanced package. I have a frogging rod and a crankbait rod with they Kastking Legend reel here are the numbers worth every penny http://www.kastking.com/fishing-rods/
Answer: I recomend the entsport 2 piece with 3 top pieces 7'. I have used the two and they are perfect
Answer: Abu Garcia 6'6" Vendetta
Q:
how do you prevent squeaking of the gears? Should you oil it or something?
Answer: Hello Lorin, are you sure it is the gears that are squeaking? One drop of oil goes a long way if you can identify the exact location of the squeaking. Gears normally are lubricated with grease while bearings and other moving parts are lubricated with oil.
Q:
Can it handle a 20lb line?
Answer: You probably need to go with braid if your loading 20# test line. Since it holds 165 yards of 12# mono my guess is you could only load about half that with 20# mono. Spider wire has a killer braid called invisi-braid that is supposed to be almost invisible. This reel will accept braid line as well as mono.
Answer: I would think so, I use 12 and 20 is not that much thicker.
Q:
What would be a good rod to go on for this reel?
Answer: Depends what you're fishing with. Check out the kastking royal legend rod.
Answer: can this reel fit on a crixus 6 ft 6 rod
Answer: Get a uglystick gx2. Low cost and they'll last.
Q:
Is it easy to load the string?
Answer: Yes, the string is easy to load
Answer: Just typical of any baitcast reel. Loading string is straightforward.
Answer: I haven't ever had trouble spooling these up. If you have trouble with other bait casters, these won't be any different. Feed the line in, tie it around the spool, and start winding it on.
Answer: Yes. I if you have never done it check YouTube for a video on the correct way to install the line
Answer: It’s not too hard.
Q:
Is this good to go straight out of the box, or should I oil the gears up first?
Answer: It had oil on it straight out the box but added some..and it still would cast bad quite often
Answer: Hi there,
Answer: I didn't, others have,I really don't see the need, but there are people who would rather play with gear than fish.Tight lines.
Answer: Mine was good to go but it never hutrs to put a few drops in there
Answer: Just use it.
Answer: Libricate first
Q:
Could this reel be used for steelhead or king salmon?
Answer: you could! but you would be under gunned for the big boys. This is a great reel for crappie to big large mouth bass.
Answer: Dont buy this reel, it broke on me on the first fish I caught, buy an Abu Silver Max or for bit more money, a Lew's SLP Speed Spool, I own both, they are both superior...to a cheaply nade KastKing.
Answer: Most definitely...
Q:
What type of break is it?
Answer: It has a magnetic break. Works fine for me.
Answer: The Royale Legend GT reel has only magnetic brakes, no centrifugal brakes like the Royale Legend reel which was discontinued.
Answer: Dual. Magnetic and centrifugal.
Q:
does it come with a pouch case just like the pictures show
Answer: Hello Jason, There was a limited run of the reel covers. The picture of the cover was posted by a customer and not by us. There is no mention of the cover in the listing.
Answer: I received mine two days ago and it had a cover in the box
Q:
what are the dimensions of the bearings?
Answer: Main Gear Shaft SUS Shield 8 X 14 X 4 , SUS Shield 5 X 9 X 3
Q:
I have pics of these reels in red. But not on amazon. Where can I get one in that color?
Answer: The Red one is the KastKing Royale and had a lower gear ratio than the Royale Legend. It has been upgraded and will be availible soon.
Q:
Will this reel handle bubble bass?
Answer: don't know what a bubble bass is
Q:
What gear ratios are available and in stock?
Answer: I think 7.1.1 and a 6.4.1
Q:
Is there a way you could put reel grips on this reel
Answer: Some of the over wrap grips will work.
Q:
all the pictures show a blackish reel but the customer pictures show a red reel what color does this reel come in and can you tell what color you get?
Answer: Mine is red but the reel is a good one if you don't fish alot I go 3+ times a week and the gears stripped about 9 months after I got the reel but it was a good reel for the price
Answer: A maroon red finish. Buy it and have a good teacher on how to use it. I have two and will be buying two more from KastKing.
Answer: The Royale Legend is black with red highlights. Looks awesome. The Kastking Royale is all red maroon and is a little cheaper than the Legend model. It has a lower gear ratio and weighs a little more than the Legend.
Answer: Black and red
Q:
Will customer service ever answer emails or phone calls? Because I've been trying for a while
Answer: I called and left a message. A product specialist called me the next day and not only answered my question but offered other advise as I was new to baitcasters having always used spinning reels. So I have to rate their customer service A+. Sorry to hear you had a different experience.
Answer: i didnt try to ask anybody, just seach in the web before i ordered
Q:
What is the "pull&turn" lever for?
Answer: Its the Cover the is used to remove the spool and disassemble the reel for tuning, maintenance or setting up.
Answer: To open side plate and adjust braking system
Answer: To open the side cover
Q:
Can I combine kastkingroyale legend whitemax reel with an uglysticks rod
Answer: Yes
Q:

Answer: Yes the retrieve is left hand
Answer: Yes, the left handed version is left handed retrieve.
Q:
The reviewers claim they have received a cover for their reel with their package, but mine did not come with one. Is this supposed to be included?
Answer: Mine did not come with a cover but I also don't remember the add saying it would. Doesn't matter to me since I really like the reel.
Answer: you are lucky if you receive the cover, the one that I purchase comes without, but the information on the amazon, doesn't call for that cover, probably is a gift not mentioned!!!
Answer: Yes cover is included
Answer: I did not get one either, however, I did get the promotion for discounted line. I think that's the replacement.
Answer: I got one with mine, but did not get operating manual until I sent email. They promptly sent me manual.
Q:
I some how lost my control cap how can I get one without buying a new reel?
Answer: Sorry, I don't know.. I would suggest calling Kastking toll free. good Luck!
Answer: I would think Kastking would sell you that part.
Q:
How many inches of line per crank does it take in
Answer: I can't answer your question specifically because it will vary due to spool and handle size. But at 5.3 to 1 gear Ratio this reel is considered low speed and high power and will take in 20-24 inches per hannde turn. Most appropriate for deep diving crankbaits, big bladed spinnerbaits and swimbaits. Also if your fising for big fish like snook, redfish, catfish or carp this would be the gear Ratio for you.. hope this info helps.
Answer: The white Max takes 5.3 in / crank depending on how full the spool is. The Royal Legend takes 7 in / crank also depending on how full the school is. I have both real and so far and pleased with both of them.
Answer: 27 inches with a full spool
Answer: I bought my Grandson a left handed reel-- I didn't realize there was a left and right-- he uses right-- can I change the the handle?
Q:
Does anyone's reel buzz a lot when casting? I just got this reel and was surprised by the amount of noise it makes when casting.
Answer: All bait casting reels with metal gears and parts can be a bit noisy. Turn the reel upside down and put a drop of oil on the worm gear and make shure the reel and its parts are clean and lubricated.
Answer: Yeah, that's normal. If it annoys you turn the magnetic brake, or the nob on the opposite side of the handle, to a higher setting. Make sure you pull in the switch under it while you turn it though.
Q:
Can u use it in saltwater
Answer: U can but make sure it's cleaned after
Q:
I bought a right handed reel; i prefer a left hand reel since i am right handed. i have not used this reel, how to i exchange?
Answer: No I got what I needed because I'm a lefty
Q:
What are the use differeces between mono & braided line?......pros & cons of both, are there any?
Answer: Braid has no give where mono stretches. When using treble hooks ,mobo helps by not pulling out of the fishes mouth. Braid will with no stretch. Braid works in heavy weeds to pull fish out and will cut grass as well
Q:
hows the reel holding up to the saltwater guys ?
Q:
Is this the white max 2?
Answer: Yes it is.
Q:
When will the left hand Royale Legend be restocked?
Answer: Typically restocks on Amazon happen every 3-4 weeks.
Q:
Does this reel have an instant anti-reverse?
Answer: Yes & works great
Answer: YES
Answer: Yes
Q:
What is the difference between this reel and the Spartacus reel by KastKing? Im new to baitcasting and noticed they are the same price.
Answer: The Spartacus has a more compact body shape with an advanced centrifugal braking system. The gear ratio is different as well. The Royale Legend has a 7.0:1 while the Spartacus has a 6.3:1 gear ratio.
Answer: is there really that much difference between a 7:01 retrieve and a 6.3:1
Answer: The king has dual braking stystem, easy fine tune magnetic brake 7:01 fast line retrieve. Hope this helps.
Q:
Pedí el carrete para embobinado derecho y me llegó izquierdo... ya pedí el reemplazo pero quiero estar seguro que llegará derecho
Q:
I bought this reel and the braking system seems to be shot. Has nyone else had similar issues?
Answer: I had same problem- drag on mine was horrible from the first day. Back to Revo for me. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Answer: No, but you should contact KastKing. All KastKing products have a one year warranty.
Q:
Is there a flipping switch?
Answer: Not sure what you mean by switch. At the back of the real there is thumb release that you push down to release the spool and cast.
Q:
Is it push button ?
Answer: Yes it is a push button reel.
Answer: If by push button you mean like a closed face spinning reel, then no. The button Releases the spool and the spool must be held once depressed.
Answer: It has a spool release lever, and it's a low profile bait casting reel. Not like a push button spincast reel
Answer: Yes
Q:
Has anyone have a problem with the retrieve and kind hoping more or less not a smooth a retrieve very herky jerky ?
Answer: I have four of these. Two were gifts/ Two I purchased. They are the smoothest reals, I’ve ever used or owned. I’ve never experienced the jerky retrieve. All of mine are the smoothed. I do keep mine cleaned and oiled
Answer: No. I have no problem. It's very smooth.
Answer: I have two Royale reels, in changing the centrificale switches inside cover i noticed that. Put the switches back to the out ward position you will be fine. I really enjoy mine !!!!
Q:
Is something wrong because my reel keeps on backreeling causing me to backlash
Answer: If your using braided line you must first put a backing of monofilament about 4 to 5 rounds or the braid will slip causing the backlash. Also you must adjust the reel for your lure weight by using the small knob under the handle. It must free fall at a slow steady pace. And you must also stop the lure before it hits the water.
Answer: I had the same problem, but you just have too keep messing with adjustment settings on the reel. After about 20 minutes of different setting trials I got the reel right. Be patient its a good product, at a great value
Answer: I switched to braided line on both my kastking reels and after I did that I haven't had a problem.
Answer: I found that the magnetic brake isn't strong enough alone to slow the spool down so what I did was take off the cover and set the second set of brakes and I haven't had a single problem after that
Answer: One you have adjusted all three drag systems to the weight of the lure you are throwing, you still need to impart some pressure on your spool with your thumb at the end of the each cast.
Q:
Does the reel come with a cover?
Answer: Hello CJ, No, but the next batch should.
Answer: Mine did
Answer: Yes
Q:
Can this reel pull in small tuna?
Q:
Do I need to add electric tape or something it’s braided ready?
Answer: No tape is needed. Have used them for braided, fluorocarbon, and mono. Great eel for the money.
Q:
Hello .i have a visa gift card ($50.00).i am trying to buy this whitemax but I am getting charged for shipping when the description says fee shipping.
Q:
would this fit on an 6 fort 6 inches ugly stik elite?
Answer: Yes. Make sure you buy the casting model, not the spinning model.
Q:
does reel have bait click?
Answer: Hi John,
Answer: No it does not.
Q:
What is the max lbs of line
Q:
Would this reel fit an ugly stick gx2 rod?
Answer: Not familiar with that rod. But it is a normal size low profile bait cast reel. I use on 7 ft skeeter Reese rods.
Answer: The only thing about those reel are the base is plastic and with flex. The two I got I use plastic tie to hold them thigher. They cast far and reel in smooth. I wish the base was metal. Not sure if this help. I don't know about your rod base seem normal lenght
Answer: Yes, the reel seat a a standard 2.5 inches and would fit on most casting rods.
Answer: I have it mounted on a medium-heavy 6 1/2' GX2. Works great.
Q:
would the whitemax become corroded easily if used in saltwater?
Answer: No...they're saltwater resistance...
Answer: I think it can be okay if clean with fresh water when after using saltwater fishing. I'm using like that.
Answer: I don’t fish in salt water but I would assume that it would, kastking does have a saltwater reel in the Spartacus Maximus I believe
Answer: KastKing has a Q&A page on their website.
Q:
Would this be a good reel for catfish?
Answer: That's exactly what I use it for. It's a fantastic reel and performs like those that cost several times as much.
Answer: Hello Joshua, that depends on the size of the catfish you are targeting. If you are catching big cats I would take a look at the Spartacus Maximus.
Answer: I am mostly a bass fisherman but I don't see any reason it wouldn't be. The retrieve is fast and it handles a heavy load.
Q:
How many yards of 40 lb kastking braid will this reel hold?
Answer: The KastKing Royale Legend will hold around 110 Yards of 40# braid.
Answer: You should be fine with 15-20 feet, this reel won’t cast much further.
Q:
Does kastking make any saltwater approved baitcasters?
Answer: Hello Bryce, the KastKing Spartacus Maximus is salt water approved.
Answer: Hello Bryce, Yes the KastKing Spartacus maximus is built for salt water.
Q:
Do i need a bait casting rod for this or can i just trade this out on my spinning reel rod? Im trying to move away from the spinning reel
Answer: I would definitely purchase a Bait casting rod. Thing to remember the more your reel is inline with the rod eyes the better your casting and performance of the rod will be. I tried my Bait Caster on a spinning rod and the distance and accuracy went down considerably. Hope this helped.
Answer: Yes, you'll need a baitcasting rod. I would steer clear of this baitcaster though. I've had 3 of this particular model and all failed within a year of purchase. I suggest that you buy a Piscifun Torrent instead. My wife has used one for 3 years without the slightest bit of trouble.
Answer: You should get a bait casting rod for greater accuracy.
Answer: It's made for a baitcasting rod
Answer: Need baitcaster.
Answer: It should mount but the mounting location will be higher up and the guides will be a different size
What I like about the reels from Kast King is the affordability with features of lager more expensive bait casters. I like to use my reel in my right hand to cast because I'm using spinning reels also to fish. Kast King offers the reels in both left and right hand casting for the same price. Amazon got it to me in 2 days since it was in stock and not on back order. I still have to spool the reel and get it to the river, but I don't think that will be a problem at all. I'm sure this reel will work just as fallible as the other Kast King reels I have.
MICK686 : Works, but not better than Abu Garcia Black Max
Well After buying this I am not impressed with the reviews that all said how great it is... It is nice but I don't think it can compete with the Abu Garcia Black Max. For the money spend a little more and get the black max. For $60 you can get the Black Max combo, I also think the rod with the black max is a good rod and for a first time bait caster buyer you cannot go wrong with the Black Max. UPDATE!!! I used this again with lures that work fine with the Black Max. I decided to put a heavier lure on and no more bird nests! Currently I have 20# test braid on this just like my other lures, so I don't think it is a line issue. Using a heavier spinner bait had no issues. The Rapala 4 3/8 in. Model J11 Weight 5/16 oz. will birds nest and not cast far. I even tried several times adjusting break and spool tension... putting a 1/2 oz spinner bait it casts far and no problems???
Yikes!! : For the price this appears to be a well made, silk smooth bait caster.
I hadn’t used a bait caster for years. With the price on this reel a and its reviews I decided why not give it a try.
I spooled it with 15 pound PLine, a 7’-2 medium heavy rod. I spent about 5 minutes setting up the spool tension and anti-backlash and made some trial casts. This reel is a rock star. I was concerned about back lashing my first cast. So far I have managed to get one minor backlash. I feel like a pro. I’ve done some flipping and skip casts. This reel was simple to set up and. I can’ be more pleased with it. It appears to be well made. Now the real test is to see how durable it is. All I have to do now is hook up with a “donky" of a bass so I can see how the drag performs.
C. Woods : Changed my review because our support ticket was lost in the system and kastking as cleared it up!
EDIT: I'm redoing this review because a mistake happened in the system where a support ticket I sent in was lost and never answered. Kastking got back with me and cleared this up with me. I can't give a bad review on their support over a system glitch!
I bought this reel for my husband it was his first low profile baitcaster reel. He has always been an Abu Garcia fan so he has always fished with the older 1990 and 2000 model Abu Garcia reels. As soon as he got this reel in his hand he couldn't believe how much further it cast and how much smoother it was compared to his Abu Garcia reels.
Since he got this reel he loved it so much that he sold all his Abu Reels and he is now fishing only low profile baitcast reels.
I would give this reel a 5 star rating but he mentioned something about the paw cap on the reel being plastic and a really bad design and he feels if he ever has to take it off and replace the paw that it would be very easy to strip the plastic cap out. Other than this he has no other complains so I can't give the reel 5 stars because of this. Whether or not it will ever strip out I'm not sure only time till tell.
He used this reel for 4 solid weeks fishing 1-2 times a day in saltwater catching hundreds and hundreds of speckled trout without any issues at all. The only issue he found was the paw cap was not tightened all the way from the factory and the paw was getting stuck some on one side of the reel after he tightened the paw cap he never had another problem.
He highly recommends this reel to anyone beginner or advanced in fishing to try it out. Will give more updates later when the reel has more wear and tear. So far I think the wear and tear he put on this reel is as much as others would take 4-6 months to do. He fishes every single day! 4 weeks of this type of fishing is the same as a weekend fisherman would put in 4-6 months of use. So the reel is holding up quite nicely!
Bass fisherman : Doesn't reel. Bad out of box. Sent back in and they never fixed problem.
Did not reel properly on first use. Level wind catches and Hangs up with any kind of tension. By far worst baitcaster That I have ever purchased. Emailed warranty center and they said wash it after using in salt water. Never touched salt water didn't work from day one. They finally sent me a return label and I finally got it back, and the reel I got back was a tarnished reel that clicks when I reel. I finally took it out. Casts like a dream but I hooked a baby 8 inch bass and it struggled to reel it in. Terrible customer service and the didn't fix the problem. The purchase price looks great but don't fall for it it is like sending hours of time to fix a problem that never gets fixed and you pay them for it.
Peters Family : I have this reel, a Stealth, and plan to get the Assassin and Speed Demon.
I have this reel set up on a 6'6" custom built medium/fast rod for fishing plastics when bass fishing. I can cast a bare senko farther with this than I can a 7' Spinning reel. Because of my KastKing reels I have very little need for my spinning reels.
For those talking about how to set them to cast without birds nests... I tried setting them like I do my Abu Garcia or Pflueger reels. I have found because of the increased spool size it changes the amount of pull that the line has when casting. I set the casting drag so it just stops the lure from falling and I can cast 30+ yards FARTHER than my Abu Garcia on a 7' pole. If your casting form is less than perfect, you will have issues. If you have issues casting this reel, slow down and work on your form. Also, be sure to have the proper lure weight to the pole design.
I've been an Abu Garcia fan, but I can't justify the higher price when these reels are in many ways BETTER and cost significantly less.
Nick S : Fluid smooth operation
This reel is awesome. I've purchased a fer bait casters from the local big box stores, and of all of those purchased I'm enjoying this reel the most. Cost per reel is reasonable. The look of the reel, nice smooth black with shiny red accents is nice.. the only thing I could ask is that they make this in black/green also. The reels operation is extremely fluid, not just smooth but fluid. Dialing in the proper resistance for different baits and lures is very simple and quick. Casting on this reel is a breeze. Once you dial the reel in (just a few seconds) you are able to smoothly cast without backlash. That is the exact reason i purchased this reel in the first place.. the big box store bait-casters have the same adjustment mechanisms but this reel is much smoother, can be purchased in left or right hand retrieve, can be more finely adjusted and is a much better value overall. I like this reel so much that I plan to purchase another or two
Steven S. : I would give this 10 stars if I could.
I wasn't familiar with KastKing. I am not closer to a beginner than expert when it comes to bass fishing. I found this KastKing reel online and for the price I thought i would give it a shot. I haven't had great luck with baitcaster in the past and mainly stuck with spinning reels. I tried this out and I must say, I am a huge KastKing fan now. This reel is fantastic. it is smooth. I had a couple birds nest in the beginning and discovered it was me and not the reel. Now I am casting this thing further than i have with any of my spinng reels. Easy to use, very smooth and feels high quality. I went to Cabelas and looked at some other models after getting use to this and I decided to stick with KastKing after trying some of the others. 10 stars!!!
brandon smith : Fire Reel!
I bought this reel to compare to my brother Abu Garcia low profile bait casting reel and this might i say performs a lot better. It takes some time to get use to and adjust but once you got a feel for it - the casts just flow!
I have found that i am able to cast a lot farther with lighter lures using this reel, I do though, of course, have a birds nest a two. For the most part these are easy to fix if you are familiar with bait casting reels - I did have a case where the line knotted up on me within the reel, not sure how that happened but hey it only took a bit out of my fishing time. Great reel though!
Russell Reid : not good
Had previously written a favorable review but now changing my opinion. I currently own 9 KastKing reels and a couple of rods. Three of these reels are the Royale Lengend GT. All are working great except 2 of the GTs. They were delivered to me 9/8/21 and were great at first. The first one started making a terrible grinding noise when cast and retrieved. Took it apart to oil it and did not help. Took apart and gain thinking reel grease may do the trick. Nope, still rough and noisy. Cannot stand to use it. Now a second GT is doing the same thing. Afraid the 3rd will go next. Will be contacting KastKing to see if they stand behind their products. Would not recommend the Royale Legend GT
Aaron Holloway : I can’t believe it
I can’t believe that a reel that I paid $39.99 for is this good! With all of the Chinese brands out there for the same price I was very skeptical. I did some research and the reason this reel is rated so high for the price is because kastking does not out their stuff in big box stores, they are direct to the consumer so they can sale high quality for a lower price.
This reel is as smooth as my lews reel and the quality is parallel. I will be switching everything over to kastking in the future. Amazing reel!!! Let this review set your mind at ease that you are getting a quality product for the price.
JoshM : Looks can be deceiving....
I don’t usually leave reviews on negative experiences, I just chalk it up to a lesson learned and move on to a more quality company. BUT, I feel compelled to leave a review on this product. I will start by saying that out of the box this reel looks great and feels like a quality unit. That’s where the positives end for me though. Ive used the reel twice and the biggest issue I have with this reel is the spool tension knob. It just will NOT stay put unless it’s set to the highest setting. Every cast it seems to work it’s way a little looser until you’re left with what can only be despcribed as the nastiest backlash/birdsnest you’ve ever experienced. The magnetic braking does not seem to make a difference unless it’s set to the minimum or maximum, there doesn’t seem to be an in between. My first outting with it (and I’m no novice baitcaster user) cost me 100yds of 12lb braid that literally had to be cut off the reel cutting my day very short. I figured, ok, maybe I need to step it up in size on my braid hoping a heavier line would solve the problem. Nope, moved up to a 30lb test braid and the same issues were experienced. There seems to be no happy setting on this reel to keep the line from overspool unless you have everything cranked own which gives you maybe a 10’ cast at best. My second issue with the reel is the line guide, it only moves across the spool when it wants to even after numerous adjustments, it binds and sticks to one spot while reeling causing the line to spool heavier to one side or the other depending on where the guide stops mid spool. I’m short I’m very displeased with this purchase, I had thought i would give it a shot as it looked like a quality unit without the 10x markup you get with name brands. I guess this too is an example of you get what you pay for. I may give the company another shot and buy the more expensive Assassin model but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t on the fence so to speak. Two outings with this baitcaster and it’s cost me two spools worth of braid, the first was their own brand of 12lb braid and the second was 30lb spiderwire. Not only am I out the money on the reel but I’m now also out the money for two different spools of braid. Buyers beware, maybe I just got a defective unit but after seeing some of the other reviews I’m thinking that’s not the case and it’s just too cheaply made. Maybe the Assassin will be of better quality as it’s almost twice the price.
Rick : Great Braking System for Beginners
This was my first bait casting reel, so it had to be super easy to learn and prevent the dreaded birds nest. I had purchased a different brand but returned it because I could not get the brake to work. This reel had a much better braking system and I was soon casting like my old spin cast reel. It did take a little time to understand the magnetic clutch and how to adjust it correctly after I started learning how much pressure to use with my thumb. This was so easy, I purchased the Royal Legend as well. Very pleased with my purchase and I would recommend this reel to any beginner.
Melissa : Great reel for the price!
I have always been satisfied with my purchases of Kastking products, and this is no different! Love the handle knobs. It reminds me of the high end Shimano and Daiwa handles. The reel is pretty smooth, not rough. It is not equal to high end reels, so don’t expect that. I took this reel out in my back yard to do some test cast, and once I got the breaks and spool tension dialed in, I easily casted to the other side of the pool with just some easy casts. Pairs nicely with my Perigee II. Not the best reel for palming, a little bit big. Breaking system is pretty good. No spool porting, despite the fact that many other reels, even in this price range, have that. But oh well, still a good reel for the price. I don’t know about long term performance, but I do know that my other Kastking reel, the Sharky III, has been holding up pretty well. I would recommend this reel to beginners, or just people that don’t fish often or want a cheaper reel.
Whiskers_the_Wise : Very sweet baitcaster!!!
If you want a good starter and your unsure you want to commit to the baitcaster way of life, this is for you. Smooth, cast well, looks good, sounds good, nice price and a good value. I personally recommend you engage (1) set of the interior brakes, (make sure which ever ones you do, they are across from each other, otherwise not balanced) set your magnetics to mid, tighten the spool tension til whatever weight bait your using, falls at a slow speed but does fall. get used to that, as you gain experience and thumb control, go ahead and throw caution to the wind and loosen that spool tension a bit and chunk and crank, enjoy!!!
Rover : Finally no birds nest!
So finally bought a quality baitcasting reel and it made all the difference in the world. My original pinnacle was garbage and tension adjustments barely worked. This baitcaster by KastKing has great ergonomic and the dials for adjustments are easy to manage, even when pulling in a fish. Loved this one so much I just bought another Kastking baitcaster, Royale Legend II, as it was on sale. Great product for great price will have me coming back for more!
Charles J Houck : Feels like it should cost at least twice as much.
Very impressed with the value and quality of this reel. The combination of magnetic brake and centrifugal brake make learning to cast super easy. I have always been a spinning rod fisherman since I was a kid, I tried before to learn to use a bait caster with little success. This reel has been a joy to use and easy to learn with both brakes. Slowly I have been backing off the brakes and casting further and further. The retrieve is super smooth and I have had no issues with the drag performance. I can’t wait for the weather to break so I can really spend some more time with this reel.
Update:
Been rocking both the white Lomax and the Black High Speed version all spring with awesome success. Landed this 5lb bass the other morning and the reel performed flawlessly. I am casting a mile with these reels and the two anti-backlash features are working perfectly together. I still can't say enough about these reels and rods. For the money it is a great entry level reel into baitcasting, and I feel confident that these reels will perform well above there cost.
Mountain Wanderer : Smooth reel
I am new to bait casting reels and fishing with bait casting. Yet, I have been reviewing a great deal of YouTube viewing while I wait for ice out. I was impressed with the presentTion of this reel and decided to take a chance and purchase it. I have also bought a reel with a price tag of over 4X’s. I spooled this reel with 50# braid so I could practice long casts as well as shorter pitching. Wow, this reel performs very nicely...it is extremely smooth. I am using it with two of the internal brakes engaged and think after I gain more experience I will be able to disengage them for even longer casts. Currently I am using light Texas Rigged Zoom worms which are light...a jig or chatter bait would fly with this reel. I have yet to match it with a good (or better) rod. Once I learn more about rods with micro guides I will. I suspect once matched up this will be a great combo I would have given the rating 5 stars if I had a chance to use it fishing Buy it!!!
All I have to do now is hook up with a “donky" of a bass so I can see how the drag performs.
axmsw : so far, excellent reel
ordered/rec'd two of these reels. sturdy packaging, thorough instructions, and stylist product. matched the reels to 7' bait-casting rod by KastKing - nice pairing. smooth action on release, solid feel and response on strikes.
my hope is i get 3 to 5 years out of these reels.
also, the reels came with survey monkey cards indicating promotional braided line however KK requires an order number other than amazon's thus preventing one from completing the survey and obtaining (in my case 2) the braided line spool(s).
Justin H : Surprised I like baitcasters!
I've used spinning reels my whole life and this is my 2nd baitcaster. My first one which cost twice as much as this one was nothing but an aggravation. I decided to give them another shot and ordered this one. After a few trips I love this reel. It's easy to use and easy to adjust. I couldnt be happier! I've had a few birds nests at first but that's 100% on me learning how to use a baitcaster. I love how quickly and precisely I can control my casts. I'm right handed and I ordered a left handed reel just because that's what I'm used to with my spinner reels.
Doug : Fantastic! (For four days) sad!
This reel is fantastic! Still can't believe its $40. The quality seems good and it has all the right options you need. I stringed it with 12lb Flourokote line...made a few quick adjustments...and headed out for a few casts. This thing is phenomenal! I never got one birdnest in over 50 casts...even throwing into the wind. The 7:1 retrieve is almost to fast...as I had to slow my cranks, reeling in a crankbait. My optimal settings: Set two switches inside the reel to on, (make sure the are opposite from each other) set you magnetic braking to 5. Adjust the reel tension knob...according to the weight of your lure. (It should just barely fall when you push your release button to cast. It is almost effortless to cast, nearly 40' yard casts with ease, with hardly any thumbing...I think it would be especially good for a beginer baitcaster. Well that was day 1, day four it broke, on the first bass I caught, the aluminum post that holds the finger grip broke, and the reel started making a washing sound, a reel should last longer then 4 days...:(
Kevin-scott "Catterman" van Vlijmen : Did not last long
OLD: The whitemax is an awesome low-profile baitcaster with a sleek design. Drags nice and smooth and it has more line capacity than the other KastKing baitcasters. Got mine spooled up with 30lb superkast9 braid. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a lower gear ratio baitcaster
NEW: This reel lasted for approximately 5 trips of casting out 2oz lured and pieces of bait. The drag became stuttery/locked-up consistently and the gears started making crunching noises.
Montgomeryyy : Great reel for the price
I have 2 of these original version reels and 2 of the royal legend2s. I am really pleased with all 4. The version 2 is a little more comfortable in the hand and I like them just a bit more than this original but they are almost identical as far as use. This original version has more bearings 11+1 vs 5+1 and it also has centrifugal breaking with 4 different settings which is better for beginners. I am very pleased with all 4 reels. Also worth adding is I had a Spartacus version of this brand which cost $30 more and didn't like it so I sent it back and got this reel witch I like better.
dwcannon : Amazing Cast
First, let me say when I took this thing out of the box it was a little large compared to my Lews. It appears the newer model is a lower profile than the one I have. But for the price, I had to try it. Man, I'm glad I did, this reel is absolutely amazing. It took me a good week to get used to it for some reason, probably user error. The smooth casting of this reel is amazing. It cast as smooth as my $129 Lews. However, this thing cast another 20 yds further than my Lews, with ease. Doesn't matter which line I use, braid or fluorocarbon, it's a beast paired up with my Lews Carbon Fire MH rod. You won't be disappointed with this low cost reel! I just order me two more Kastking reels...
Shawna : not bad but not great
I have this on a berkley cherrywood HD casting rod. It comes with little to no grease on gear system. Recommend greasing before using it due to it makes a bad grinding sound if not done. Smooth sounding after I greased and lubed up. centrifugal brakes had to be all on or all off or it had a bad catch while reeling in lures. Only used this for two fishing trips so far but I do like it for the most part. It will let you cast lite weigh lures but takes a little while to get adjusted correct. Bought this to replace my lost shimano citica Which I really miss. Not bad for a $40 reel. Giving it 3 stars only because it had some issues out of box. If you looking for good reel for price this is not a bad reel. Time will tell if it is durable.
Raging Stallion : Excellent Reel, You Won't Be Disappointed
The KastKing Legend Royale is an excellent starter baitcasting reel for anglers of all levels. It's 11+1 ball bearings make it incredibly smooth and, for the money, I doubt you'll be able to find a better reel than this. I have the Abu Garcia Black Max and this reel outperforms it in every way. It's a very sturdy yet lightweight machine, and I'm able to cast all day without feeling fatigued. I paired it with the KastKing Royale Legend rod 7' medium action and 10-pound braided line. I've just made it my new primary bass and speckled trout reel. Believe me when I say that you won't be disappointed when purchasing this reel. Also- don't forget to check out some of the reviews on YouTube so you get a full understanding of what this reel is capable of. Tight lines-happy fishing!
Dendrobate : I’m hooked on Kastking!
I had been hearing a lot about KastKing reels from friends and had seen video reviews on YouTube about how wonderful and affordable they were so I took a chance last year and purchased the Royale Legend baitcasting reel for $40 bucks. Since then, I’ve put this reel to the test and can honestly say I’m very impressed! First, the reel is not only tough and durable but it’s dependable and casts my baits silky smooth with precision. Kastking should have charged $140 dollars for the reel, not $40. I have caught so many bass, catfish, sunfish, and crappie on this dynamic reel, it’s just blown me away. All I can say is, if you’re a serious angler then I urge you to buy a Kastking reel. While I absolutely live the Royale Legend, you can honestly buy any KK reel and be happy. And I should know since I’ve bought 7 more KK reels in the past year. Kastking is for real.
Chuck : Kastking stood by their product
Can't adjust to save my life. Original review was positive because the action felt very smooth. After using this real multiple times now I can't adjust it to save my life, rats nest every time I try to cast. I will only use real for vertical jig.
After I posted Kast king contacted me, not only 1 time but many times tried to contact me to resolve my issue. Out of all their customers they made me a priority over a bad post. That tells me they stand behind their products AND value their customers.... I am a lifetime customer now! Please buy their product if you want quality and service. They helped me through what turns out to be a novice error in using their product. Thanks
Eric : Works, maybe not best for big fish though.
Bought this a few months back based on a buddy reccomendation. I have gone 1 for 4 on king salmon on this reel, fought a bonafide monster for a while but lost it and the reek was pretty good, couple on-then-off fish and landed one little 12 pounder and now the one way bearing goes both ways.
The drag has been mostly smooth, though the first time I had a real fish pull drag it loosened up a bit really early on so I had to adjust the drag way earlier than I am used to when playing a large fish (the bonafide monster mentioned earlier), otherwise drag has been smooth. Casting is 7 or 8 out of 10 for me, on a long day it starts backlashing in about 2/3 the time of some of my higher dollar/quality reels. Another buddy of mine tells me to keep trying KastKing but go for a different model.
Sarah : Good reel for the money
Just received and took it out for a couple hours fishing. Nice reel for the money. Smooth cast and retrieve. Watched a KastKing youtube video on baitcast reel setup and no birds nests for the first time using a bait cast reel. So far very pleased with the purchase and would buy from again.
spaceman : Not Made To Last
I bought a few of theses and really liked them at first. Initially the performed really well but by the end of the season they began to fail. The main problem that I was having was binding/misalignment of the spool shaft. This was happening due to sloppy tolerances in the side access plate. At first it was even once in awhile but then it started happening every time the reel was under a load - catching a fish. I also bought an Assassin carbon fiber bait caster too. That was junk from the get go and the replacement that they sent was junk too. Save your money and buy something better like a Garcia or a Lew's. You'll be a lot less frustrated if you do.
Hlm038 : Just put down my Curado...
I was given a new rod and just wanted an inexpensive reel to put on it to fish around the house and at the camp. Online reviews showed this one as one of the top reels for the money so I figured I would give it a shot. Less than $50 bucks once I added string, it was worth the gamble. I finally got a chance to fish with it this morning and I am amazed. I have an older Curado that I always fish with, it is close to 20 years old and has been my go-to setup for years. This new reel out casts the old one and is much more comfortable to fish with. I hate to say it, but there may be a new favorite. I will buy another one shortly, they are a great deal!
Alakai : SILKY smooth! Typical Kast King quality
People ask me about KastKing stuff all the time. I love them! Pretty much all I own for the majority of my fishing is KastKing now. I appreciate the low cost and high quality you get from the company. Since I use most of my goods in the saltwater, it is an absolute MUST that my gear be corrosion resistant, KK is always there for me for that low cost and high value reels and rods. I do not maintain my stuff much either, just a rinse down after each session and I set it aside to dry and ready for the next run. Hope you like the video I made up right after I got the reel, caught me some huge fish and never worried about my reel keeping up. Like I said, my fishing is in saltwater and with beefy, aggressive fish that do not come from any hatchery or pond conditions where there is no current or are fed consistently. Cool colors to match my rods, high quality and great price. What more can you ask for? Highly Recommended. If you have doubts, check out my YouTube channel and see just how often and how I am using the KK gear!
The angry customer : They just know how to take care of customers!
I bought this reel 6 months ago and the thumb bar started to crack just recently. I let Kastking know and they sent me a brand new replacement reel because they just know how to take care of customers! Great warranty! Great customer service! I love this reel too much it was my 1st baitcaster going into as a beginner and now I have different types of baitcasters and I still love using this one over my shimanos, quantums, abu garcias, etc... It cast very smooth and the braking system is top of the line! For the price I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get into baitcasters!
Nathen Barto : Made it through 3/4's of the day then started making a weird noise like a bearing was going out
Finally got to use the reel this weekend. Made it through 3/4's of the day then started making a weird noise like a bearing was going out. Started out great and I though it was a great reel. Was very smooth and cast great. But now it only casts like 10 yds with 1/2oz spinnerbait and sounds like it's full of rocks. I'll try to take it apart soon and see what the issue is. Hopefully it's just a bearing and I can salvage it with an IBEC ceramic. Drag works great, and reels in very smooth.

Emma : Don't be afraid to buy these
Hope I don't regret my words but these reels are of exceptional quality for the price. I fished for a week solid while on vacation. Caught numerous flounder and redfish up to 30 inches. The reels cast smooth, drags are smooth, bearing run smooth. Thought I was having an issue a couple of days in with internals but found some trash in the line guide. Removed that and it was ok. I purchased two and if they hold up for a few more trips, I will probably buy another one. The only thing that was odd...normally, baitcast reels tend to backlash when throwing light lures. After switching to heavier weight, I had to tighten the brakes a little to keep from having to feather it as I cast. No big deal after I figured out I needed to. Spooled with 15lb Trilene. Held plenty of line.
Dtancr : This real got so many great reviews I had to get one
This is my second casting reel, I purchased my first 30 years ago and after a day of backlash swore I would never buy another. This real got so many great reviews I had to get one. Possibly impossible to tangle line, I love this real fits perfect in my hand the white with red drag looks great. I am so pleased with the purchase. For a full review check out Spartan kid outdoors on Youtube and buy one of these. Happy Fishing
MELISSA M SOLIS : Best reel for the money
This is a great Solid build reel. Has very smooth retrieve, and feels great in the hands. You won't be sorry buying this reel. I recommend this reel for a weekender fisherman or a backup reel setup. Can't find a better reel for the money. It has made me a believer in KASTKING REELS. The controls on this reel are fantastic. Spool resistance adjustment knob clicks and is tactile. The handle grips Remind me of the Shimano cushioned grips as well. The reels casting is great event with light weight Lures or baits. Once you're dialed in, you can throw your bait a long ways.

NewEnglander : This reel taught me how to use a baitcaster!
I'm new to baitcasting and I am still practicing, whenever I get a chance. So, how do I know this is a good baitcaster if I haven't fished with it yet? First, I bought a baitcaster reel+rod combo for $85 in Walmart, about 2 years ago, because I really wanted to get in to learn baitcasting. It is a brand name, most fishermen would recognize, I won't say no more, because they do have excellent products, but some of the gear, what they make is just horrifyingly bad. So as a beginner, I started practicing on that and of course, all I was getting was backlashes and it just felt so useless and cheap. The entire practice was just a major frustration and I completely given up trying to learn and the rod+reel combo ended up in my garage and swore that I will never touch it again. This year, I changed my mind after watching others and here I am with 30+ years of fishing experience, but can't use a baitcaster. So I took the reel off the rod, and bought one of these. Still didn't want to get anything pro with 4x the price of this, because I was afraid, that this will also ends up in the garage or the trash and didn't want to waste to much money. Amazingly after like 20min (and after a couple of youtube videos), I started to get it. Of course I got some backlashes and my accuracy is way off, but this reel is just excellent and feels waaay better than the other brand-name /more expensive one! After a few days of practice now, I feel confindent to cast in short distances and my accuracy is improving to a point, that it almost feel like I got Jedi powers and I can hit individual beer cans from 50 feet! Lesson learned...brand name and expensive options may not guarantee quality.
Donald Lilly : Fantastic Reel!!! This is a Musky getter
Ok I bought this for my lighter musky fishing, I used it all day throwing up to 3oz baits. It never missed a beat, not one bird nest smooth as silk. I teamed it up with 50 lb spider wire handled it perfect. I bought 125 years and there was quite a lot still on the spool. This is a perfect reel for the lighter musky stuff how will it handle a musky, we will see. How will it hold up? We will see. It is user friendly. My big musky reels and rods take there toll on my arms. If this reel holds up for one season fishing once a week 11 hours a day, I will be happy. If I get 2 years I will be in pardise. The pic below is one my grandson caugh 6/8/17 Here in Wv 41.5 17" rubber swimbait
July 2016 I have used this real very hard throw up to 4 ounce baits, has not missed a beat. I caught all these muskies in the pictures on this reel, handled them absolutely perfect. You need to take the spool out and put some grease down in the dog gear if you hear a grinding sound that will fix the problem. There is nothing wrong with the real it's just they are skimpy on their grease cost money you know. I am guess I have 40 hours of had use and it still doing great, there is no paint showing signs of wear either. I will give a update.

Zach Moore : Will buy again.
Well for 39.99 i figured I would try Kast King one more time after I have already bought the Speed Demon and to be honest not really impressed with it. But I purchased the Royale to put on a 7' medium rod to cast lighter weight lures. After fishing with it for 2 full days of fishing I was much more impressed with this reel than the Speed Demon.
Look: First impression was the reel looks like any other expensive reel on the market and even my dad was impressed with the look.
Cast ability: It took me awhile to calibrate it the perfect setting, but with dual braking it didn't take me long before I was casting a light jerk bait further than I have cast it before without backlash.
Durability: I can't speak too much on this due to only using it on 2 trips, but I caught multiple small mouth and largemouth bass and had 0 problems with drag slipping. Hopefully this reel last a long time.
Negative: Only negative I can think of as of right now is the reel appeared to have 0 oil on anything. So I oiled the spoil and bearings before use which I would recommend for everyone to check.
Positives: Cheap, cost effective reel that I would recommend for anyone looking to get into bass fishing and not looking to spend a whole lot of money. Or, anyone looking to buy some cheap setups for friends so they don't ruin your expensive setups.
James Plake : Good value, budget reel.
I purchased the original version of this reel specifically to check out the "centrifugal" brake. Unfortunately the dual brake does not include a true centrifugal brake. The brake inside with the switches is really just a friction brake there is no centrifugal force in action here. However, this reel definitely punches above it's price point. With any "budget" item I plan on them being at the price point because they skip on quality control so I always take them apart and inspect them before I put them to use. I did the same with this reel. The four tabs on the "centrifugal" brake are the friction point for the standard friction brake if you do not have any of them extended then the shaft presses only against the adjuster for the friction brake. Possible quality control issue, the bearing under the friction brake knob doesn't actually touch the shaft of the spool on my reel. This shouldn't be much of an issue as it isn't in a place there should be a load even with a fish on, but if the shaft is going to float in the air why have a bearing at all. I put a drop of oil on each bearing for good measure, worked it into them and put it all back together.
At the lake the reel proved to be well worth the money. Spooled with 14lb fireline I was able to cast an unweighted worm much further than I expected with minimal birds nests while I got the reel tuned in. I ended up with two of the tabs on the "centrifugal" brake turned on, the mag brake set to 6, and the friction brake set so the worm dropped at a medium speed when I released it.
It's not perfect by any means. But overall the Kastking Royal Legend is definitely a good value reel.
This was based on 2 fishing trips, if longevity or durability becomes an issue I'll be back to update my review.
Randy : Main gears are not top quality brass in my opinion.
Not really a bad reel for the price. I received this reel on June 23, 2020. I have fished every weekend since with this reel. I have cleaned oiled and greased this reel twice now. This last time I find lots of metal shavings inside of it. I don’t think this reel will last much longer. Gears are worn and small part of the teeth are missing. A few more big fish and it will probably be done. If you don’t fish it this hard I think it’s a ok reel for the money. I have reels that have been Ed fished for years that are in way better shape. If your a serious fisherman spend a extra 40 or 50 bucks and get something that will last a little longer.
