Answer: If you are looking for a KastKing reel about the same size as an Ambassadur 5500, then I would suggest a KastKing 40. I have the 40R and it works just as well as the 5500. I have mine spoiled with big game 30lb mono and have been vertical jigging big red drum and cobia 30 to 80lbs up from 20ft to 55ft of water. The R-60 works great for this and I don’t see any problem boating fish up to 100+lbs even tho the fish will strip some line off making runs but it has a good drag and holds plenty of 30lb test.

Answer: I think that depends more on the line than anything. I can do that with braid and have with some mono but if your line is memory prone and is spooled on loosely you may run into a problem but that the case with any bait cast.

Answer: In my opinion, there is no minimum line size, it's how you have your spool tension set up, if it's back lashing in the reel you may need to add more tension to the spool. I've used 8 lb. line on reels before just make sure your reel is set up correctly.
Answer: line does not matter much, add some weight, adjust the resistance on the other side of the handle, it should barely move on that weight. Then when you throw it you need to put your thumb right before that weight hits water, otherwise the spools inertia will cause it to spin more to give a spaghetti.... practice needed... but two logical points above are the key!
Answer: Any baitcaster will backlash without spool control when casting. Practice and learn to control the spool with your thumb.

No. It's a great reel for the price. But, Penn reels are of a higher quality. Don't get me wrong, they are decent, and they should treat a person good. If your looking at a Penn rod, then chances are you are fishing Saltwater, Brackkish water at the very least. It might be worth it to rinse off the Saltwater with fresh after each use.
Answer: It should be your preference, whatever rod you choose, it's great for casting for distance or in close, personally I use an 11' daiwa sealine casting rod for my rxa60's, hope this helps...

I was not sure if I should buy this reel at first but after fishing with it a few times I know I made the right decision. I fish lake Erie for walleye and this reel has a smooth drag system and I have no problems with fish that are eight pound plus. Don't be afraid to buy this reel it's the real deal and I love it.

This is an OK reel. Yes it is significantly cheaper than an abu. BUT, my abu also doesn't have play in the gears. I have had problems with the rover not wanting to keep the spool lock down unless the handle is in perfect position because of loose gears. It will also, occasionally on a hard cast, release the spool lock on its own. Potentially causing backlash and a "birds nest". And even more rarely it would disable itself just off a light bump while waiting for a catfish to hit. I have missed only a few cats to this as circle hooks will often set themselves under the tension.
While it hasn't been a serious problem. it is frustrating. I also purchased an abu garcia catfish special around the same time and the differences between the two are *VERY* noticeable.
However it is reliable under pressure. The rate that it brings in line is impressive, and it easily keeps the 6-8oz weights I use in the river for large live bait up off the bottom and out of the rocks on retrieve. The bait clicker is very loud, which is nice when you need to walk away for a moment.
I mostly bought it for its drag discs. The zebco 888 it replaced just couldn't handle the big ones properly. If you want a decent reel to see if you enjoy catching very large catfish but are on a bit of a budget, I do recommend the kastking rover. If I get 2 decent years out of it before it falls apart, then it did ok. That being said, the abu replaced another abu that I got 15 great years of heavy use out of. But it was 2x the price of the rover....
Also these large reels are overkill if all you do is fish for 2-5lb channels. The rover40 with 15lb braid and a 10lb lead would be absolutely fine for that.
While it hasn't been a serious problem. it is frustrating. I also purchased an abu garcia catfish special around the same time and the differences between the two are *VERY* noticeable.
However it is reliable under pressure. This is one of two Rovers I own, the other is a Rover 60. I just got a chance to open the boxes even though I bought them months ago. The two cannot be more different and each in its own way. The 40 is way way too loud to wind, and the 60 is virtually silent. Both drag stars turn themselves loose just as you test winding the handle a few times. As I attempted to see maybe it just takes a few adjustments here and there and reached for the “manual”. Well there isn’t any, and to add insult to injury, the diagram is so so small, I have problems seeing them with a magnifying glass. This is money saving to a point of fault as the printed page contains info for Rover 40-60/70/80-90, with any thoughts the part names could have had the same numbers, and only printed once for all the numbers and give the pictures more space if it came down to printing just on one side of the paper or the profit goes away. But c’mon this is ridiculous.

The worst reel I have ever seen, And I'm a fishing reel mechanic, the reel is full of gaps all over, the level wind and spool are totally out of alignment, don't even try getting it to align nearly impossible because you turn any of the two side the whole frame would bow everywhere and HUGE GAPS will appear all over the reel, and I purchased 2 and it happened to both reel, ridiculous. and also the gear shift is the worst I have ever seen, completely goes out of alignment when you shift.

This is NOT the new round baitcast king (pun intended). There are issues. I use it for paylake catfish. Results? regular backlashing (even with thumbing the spool). Also, the issue of line getting caught behind the spool edge- this is a real occurrence, not a rarity. I've used it for about 6 months of fishing before writing this ( including this year and last). This will be kept as a back up and I will invest in an Amb-. Even one of cheap ones would probably perform better than this. I give it three stars because I can get through a day of fishing with it without Major issues, just annoying ones. Also, I hate the wide, all the way across the reel, cheap plastic spool release button. If you are used to the standard small button on the side of a round baitcast, you will accidentally release the spool at hookset sometimes due to thumb placement, costing you fish.

The reel has an excellent, high quality feel. No cheap parts that I have found. The size and feel of the Rover 60 is very comparable to the Abu 6500. I would advise anyone that is on the fence about the Rover to buy with confidence. Super smooth casting, smooth retrieve, smooth drag. Nice loud bait clicker too! I am transitioning all of my catfish reels to the Rover now! And that says a lot because I'm not a person who likes change, especially when you are battling hard fighting, equipment destroying 60 plus pound catfish!! Buy the Rover, spend half the money, and get what I will say is a just as good as Abu or better quality reel!!!

More than I expected, didn’t want to spend the money for the Garcia Ambassador so figured I would give KastKing a try. I have now used a few times and caught a few bass and redfish, this Reel was very easy to cast and to retreave with fish on. Would recommend to anyone looking for a inexpensive Bait casting reel that looks and functions as ever bit as good as the like name brand model.

I purchased the Kastking Rover 50 to use as a saltwater bait caster and pier fishing reel. I have used round bait casters for 25 years. Compared to my 25 year old Abu Garcia BlackMax - see photos - this Rover 50 has similar build quality, thickness in metal construction, and very smooth gears/bearings. I haven't yet fished it, but don't expect to have any issues after handling and spooling the reel. So far, I am very pleased with this purchase. After a few outings, I will update the review.

This is a nice baitcasting reel for the price. I spooked 65 lb braid with a 3 oz disk weight and slider along with a 110 lb clip on barrel swivel, 50 lb mono leader and a 7/0 hook. Obviously I am fresh water catfishing and salt water pier fishing. Reel is great but you should probably pair with a medium/heavy or heavy action rod. The rod I am using is cheap and I am scared constantly it will snap when big fish are hooked. I love the bait clicker but the spool tensioner is too close to the star drag so tightening/loosening can be uncomfortable. My only complaint.

Update3/9/2019- I reached out to kast king about the noise they sent a replacement. Replacement reel showed up box beat to piss handle bent and threads stripped. Emailed them about this as soon as I opened the box and sent them pictures. No reply back. That's was 2 weeks ago. I have tried to get ahold of someone about this multiple times with no reply kast king is getting bigger as a name but customer service and quality is starting to get worse. Save your money and buy something else don't mess with Krap King stuff.
I bought a bass pro catmaxx reel which is super smooth and silent. I then bought a kast king 60r used it and it's crunchy and really loud when reeling in. This is with clicker off. Took the reel apart greased and oiled everything catmaxx got smoother 60r didn't get any better highly disappointed I havnt used the 60r but the one time and acouple casts after the lube service. I'll. Be getting another catmaxx and really thinking about selling all my kast king stuff and going with someone else.

I’m not sure why this is rated so high. The drag is a joke. I fought an 18lb sting ray off a pier and could not get this thing reel it in. I tightened the drag but it’s kept pulling away so I ended up hand-lining it in. Then when I removed the reel to return it there was rust around the bolts where the reel mounts to the rod. I only used it 3 times! Not sure if anyone’s else’s noticed these issues.

the KastKing R60 is a great fit for fishing above the needs for Bass Fishing but below Offshore Salt Water fishing. This reel pairs nicely with a 7'-9' rod and 15-30lb test for Reds, Cats, Stripers, Cobia, small sharks, Black Drum, etc. Great for putting on long rods for surf/shore casting. Small enough to not be cumbersome but larger than the standard bass fishing bait casters that have lower line capaccities, etc. The R60 is very comparable to a more expensive Abu Garcia but half to a third the costs. My Reel did not come with any instructions, etc or feature descriptions which would have been nice hence the 4-star rating vs 5-star. most reels come with info on how to care for your reel, oiling needs, etc. also, what all the knobs and brake settings are.

So I will start off this review by discussing the presentation when opening it. The Rover 70 (the version I purchased) came in a box (pictured above) with only a few scratches and dings (guaranteed to be from shipping) but was otherwise unmarked. I will say it is a nice looking box, not too flashy, doesn't feel like super cheap cardboard (you know the type of cardboard). Onto the contents of the box, inside you'll find the reel, the convenient tote bag (both pictured above) and the parts list for the reel. The tote bag is a nice addition (though more than likely, my reel will be spending a majority of its time on my rod) and the reel came in perfect condition.
Overall on the presentation- 8/10

Pros- The reel has an all aluminum frame with a decent sized rubber power handle. Non of that smooth plastic garbage on this handle. The star drag is VERY easy to use. The alarm button switches the reel to a very satisfying but not too loud clicking to alert you of a take. Not nearly as loud as other reels do and its very easy to use the button. Lining up was also very easy on this reel (I use 60lb braided line on it for catfishing). Another thing I have noticed is that its NOT an easy task to birds nest this reel. Other baitcaster I have used feel like they birds nest on every other cast. I have already casted this thing a few hundred times and no issues on either the cast or the retrieve.
Cons (Few and far between)- There really isnt much to talk about here. However, there are a few things that do need pointed out. First being that the levelwind CAN get in the way if you hook into a large fish. Bought the Rover 50 for my Dad’s early Father’s Day present. He picked out the KastKing Rover 50. When it arrived the box was damaged, but the reel and the schematic were in perfect condition. He is retired and just fishes at pay lakes and the Ohio River, his favorite is catfishing. He used the reel today and told me he loves it. He says it casts as well as a Garcia, very smooth. He picked it out off Amazon and says it is worth every penny. He would definitely buy another KastKing

I caught a 12 lb Chinook with this reel and was a little skeptical, but I have to say it worked flawlessly. The drag was able to be adjusted to work with the salmon and released line as it should. I cannot say anything about the cast-ability of this reel, but for use with downriggers, it worked perfectly. I liked this reel so much, I bought a second one for a spare rod setup. As for durability, only time will tell, but a week of saltwater, catching fish daily and it still works with no hiccups.

The reel that I have received(KastKing Rover 60 RH) is defective. When reeling in line it feels very "notchy" the worm gear for the level line seem as if it has a defect in the machining. It "catches" with every full rotation of the reel handle. when you cast it does the same in reverse and causes nasty birds nests. At first i thought maybe the machining was just so precise that it needed to be broken-in. However it has not improved at all. Now the reel is full to the brim with the KastKing super power braided line that i also purchased. I would hate to have to waste all that line plus the 30lb mono backer. Is there a part you can send so i can repair it myself? Or would I have to ship this one back and wait for a new one to show up? I was very excited when my package arrived only to be slightly disappointed. I haven't even used a hook yet, only casted with a 1oz weight to see if it would get better. I do not want to leave any negative reviews of your product as the fit and finish of the reel is beyond what I imagined and I love that its made here in the U.S.A.. I hope to get a response soon as I'm eager to put this reel through it paces.

I bought the 50. This reel is made for fishing with heavier lures and setups. 1/2 ounce set ups are as light as you want to go. I fish for bass mostly and this reel has caused me to move more towards catfishing because of the amount of bottom fishing I’ve done due to using weights. Which is honestly what its made for.
That is not really a problem just an oversight on my part. What is a problem though is the difficulty with casting. It doesn’t birdsnest much but what it does do is it fail to cast entirely unless coerced. Every time I want to cast I hit the release trigger, which should do the trick but doesn’t, and then I have to jiggle the spool side to side to get it to disengage from the reeling mechanism. Very impressed! The reel has a smooth and powerful feel to it. The reel is comparable in construction with reels 2-3 times more expensive. The reel came with schematic/parts list and a nice size cloth storage bag. It is well made and should easily hand anything thrown at it. Surprisingly, the spool release button is ergonomically placed for easy access and is easy manipulation. I’m a spinning reel surf fisher and this is my first baitcasting reel. After a lot of research I found this reel to be highly recommended for beginning baitcasters. I am looking forward to catching my next big fish on this reel.

And even more rarely it would disable itself just off a light bump while waiting for a catfish to hit. Mr. Bug : Won't last long
During the first use of about two hours fishing, the line out alarm disappeared unknowingly. It still worked ok though for the rest of the fishing hours with the alarm missing. Continued to use it for fishing the following day, then found that the Star Drag dial could not set drag tension, turned it to maximum drag but still did not have any drag power, the line pulls freely. Could not believe this product was so poorly made! Luckily, I used it soon after I received the reel, and these problems appeared early and it was still within the return window. I returned it and quickly bought another reel of different brand.

M. Parrot : Well built, affordable baitcaster - 50L Model
Smooth retrieving, well built, lightweight baitcaster. Drag feels consistent and cast control works well. Bait clicker is a nice feature for this size of reel. Line capacity is very good. I have a Shimano Calcutta 201B and this KastKing compares quite favorably to the Shimano on performance and build but at 1/4 the cost.
Can't speak to longevity yet. Well packaged with nice felt storage bag. My only gripes are that the exploded diagram labels are impossible to read without a microscope and no instruction manual is included (although it's pretty easy to figure out since it is a pretty standard setup).
If this reel can hold up for any extended period of time, it is a definite winner. Time will tell.

Worst reel i ever owned. Looked interesting enough to buy and try. Terrible reel. The drag doesn't work. When you try to retrieve line you have to assist the reel by pulling on the line. Things a giant piece of Chinese junk. I have an antique pflugger that's 60 years old and resembles this thing. I love that reel. I was hoping for a similar durable newer version of that reel. All these high ratings make me skeptical . That's how bad this real is.

Got this and put it on a 12’ longitude pole. Love it. You can sling this thing out pretty dang far. I bank fish and needed something to get me out in the main channel on the Tennessee River. Pulled in some decent cats with it already. Bait clicker is loud and works great. Had a 5lb catfish make it click. Beautiful sound. Lol. So far I love it. Great value and works very well.

The reel that I have received(KastKing Rover 60 RH) is defective. When reeling in line it feels very "notchy" the worm gear for the level line seem as if it has a defect in the machining. It "catches" with every full rotation of the reel handle. when you cast it does the same in reverse and causes nasty birds nests. At first i thought maybe the machining was just so precise that it needed to be broken-in. However it has not improved at all. Now the reel is full to the brim with the KastKing super power braided line that i also purchased. I would hate to have to waste all that line plus the 30lb mono backer. Is there a part you can send so i can repair it myself? Or would I have to ship this one back and wait for a new one to show up? I was very excited when my package arrived only to be slightly disappointed. I haven't even used a hook yet, only casted with a 1oz weight to see if it would get better. I do not want to leave any negative reviews of your product as the fit and finish of the reel is beyond what I imagined and I love that its made here in the U.S.A.. I hope to get a response soon as I'm eager to put this reel through it paces.

i haven't used them yet. i bought two. i've never had a baitcasting reel, so i don't have a lot for comparison, but I've owned scores of reels. i bought these to troll for spanish and blues but also to be strong enough to catch a big redfish or amberjack so i can use them for bottom fishing. I'll probably also used them for big muskies on the river and maybe catfish on the lake. these will be good for trolling and bottom fishing but its a real bonus that i can cast them too. these look really versatile to me. I'm impressed with the quality of the materials and machining for the price. they look much more expensive than they were.

The worst reel I have ever seen, And I'm a fishing reel mechanic, the reel is full of gaps all over, the level wind and spool are totally out of alignment, don't even try getting it to align nearly impossible because you turn any of the two side the whole frame would bow everywhere and HUGE GAPS will appear all over the reel, and I purchased 2 and it happened to both reel, ridiculous. and also the gear shift is the worst I have ever seen, completely goes out of alignment when you shift.

Purchased the Rover Round 60 Right Hand, spooled with 30 # braid , installed on an Ugly Stick 6' 6" medium heavy. Casting, reeling and drag system was smooth, reel weight and balance was very good. Used this rod & reel combo for striper fishing using live bait, jigs and slow trolling with spinners the reel performed great. Catch was stripers between 1-7 lbs, reel and drag system functioned well. I like the clean design and all metal construction of the reel. I would recommend this reel for the price, performance and design features.

WStewart : Multiple issues with mine, hearing they are common issues
I have fished with my Rover 40R several times since buying it just under a month ago. One of the handle paddles is about to fall off because the brass rivet securing the paddle to the handle wasn't set properly. Now it is wobbling and this will round out the rivet hole until it falls off. A request sent via the official Kastking warranty process was returned to me indicating I could purchase a replacement handle! So much for their 1 year warranty. Besides that defect I find the drag too loose. Other than that it seemed like a nice, inexpensive reel although I am worried it may not last anywhere near as long as my other name brand reels.

More than I expected, didn’t want to spend the money for the Garcia Ambassador so figured I would give KastKing a try. I have now used a few times and caught a few bass and redfish, this Reel was very easy to cast and to retreave with fish on. Would recommend to anyone looking for a inexpensive Bait casting reel that looks and functions as ever bit as good as the like name brand model.

Bought the 70 for surf fishing shark. It held about 275yds of #80 braid. I am very new to casting reels (first one ever) and I never once bird nested the reel. It casts like a dream and very user friendly. I've started using kastking products a couple years ago and can not say anything bad about them.

I purchased the Kastking Rover 50 to use as a saltwater bait caster and pier fishing reel. I have used round bait casters for 25 years. Compared to my 25 year old Abu Garcia BlackMax - see photos - this Rover 50 has similar build quality, thickness in metal construction, and very smooth gears/bearings. I haven't yet fished it, but don't expect to have any issues after handling and spooling the reel. So far, I am very pleased with this purchase. After a few outings, I will update the review.

I spent yesterday inspecting, tinkering and casting these reels and I am very pleased. For my intended purpose.. catfishing, these reels are a great buy. If I had one area of improvement to suggest it would be in the adjustability of the star drag. While sufficient, it does not have a high degree of adjustability. Goes from light to heavy very quickly. But for the price these reels are clearly the best in class for a decent $50 catfish reel.

Very impressed! The reel has a smooth and powerful feel to it. The reel is comparable in construction with reels 2-3 times more expensive. The reel came with schematic/parts list and a nice size cloth storage bag. It is well made and should easily hand anything thrown at it. Surprisingly, the spool release button is ergonomically placed for easy access and is easy manipulation. I’m a spinning reel surf fisher and this is my first baitcasting reel. After a lot of research I found this reel to be highly recommended for beginning baitcasters. I am looking forward to catching my next big fish on this reel.

I love this reel so much that I just bought another one tonight. You will not find a better reel at this price. I would put it up against an Ambassador all day long and it is about $100 dollars cheaper. It has all metal gears no plastic. Ambassadors are great as long as you have the extra money to spend on them. If you want the same features with out the big price tag buy this Kast King. I just love it. It is my favorite cat fish reel for the local pay lakes.

I have Penn 209 and 309 reels, as well as AG Ambassadeur for my trolling fix. Rolled the dice on whether to grab another of those reels or try the Rover 60 version. Came yesterday, and it was fun tearing it apart to look for any modifications I might need to make (just fussy). I fish mainly for freshwater barracudas (muskie and Northerns) and I sometimes run solo trolling, which is an exercise in insanity and adrenalin!
So, my curiosity was on the retrieve and the bait-clicker noise, as these are my primary factors when running solo with 3-4 rods in the the water at the same time. Rigged it up on a MH casting rod for practice with a casting plug on the end. Smooth cast and great distance. Pretty cool for a stout reel!
It's near tournament time on the Great Lakes, and one of the best muskie lakes in the country. The Rover 60 will be on deck for the trial run. Pending performance, I'll step down to the Rover 50 for straight casting and give that a spin.
I can see these retiring the Penns as workhorses. Which means I'll buy more after the pressure testing this summer.
