Choose The Correct Spinning Reel Size For Your Bait Fishing
| | | |
Where Trout And Panfish Rule: ABF-20b Avenger Baitfeeder spinning reels begin at size 20, perfect for baiting trout and panfish on small ponds, lakes and reservoirs. Cast floating trout baits on slip sinkers, fish live minnows under floats for aggressive crappie, this reel is perfect for 4- to 8-pound test line. | General Freshwater: ABF-30b and ABF-40b Walleye, catfish and bass match well to size 30 and 40 Avenger Baitfeeders. If 8-to-12-pound line is correct for the fishery, these are the proper size reels. The size 40 also crosses over to light inshore applications in saltwater fishing. | When Big Baits Equal Big Fish: ABF-55b and ABF-65b Large live baits and large predatory fish like pike, musky, striped bass and trophy catfish can require a lot of line capacity on spinning reels. The Avenger Baitfeeder spinning reel in sizes 55 and 65 hold plenty of line for trophy freshwater fish and most saltwater species. | Fishing The Open Ocean- ABF-65b and ABF-80b You can't be quite sure what will eat your bait in the ocean. It could be a small dolphin fish, it could be a sailfish. In either case, size 65 and 80 Okuma Baitfeeders are the largest spinning reels in the family, ready for fast-moving fish that sprint towards the horizon. |
Okuma Baitfeeder Technology
Let 'Em Eat
When fishing live baits, chunk baits, worms, insects or dough baits, the best fishing success often comes from allowing fish to secure a solid hold of the bait without feeling the resistance of the fishing rod and gear. This is difficult to accomplish with traditional spinning reels. Okuma Baitfeeding Technology is the ultimate bait fishing solution. Featuring a secondary drag system in the rear of the reel, the Baitfeeder switch completely disengages the primary drag system. With the bail of the reel closed and the line remaining well under control, the Baitfeeder switch allows line to pay out under an adjustable amount of tension. Once the fish has had time to completely eat a bait, a turn of the reel handle disengages the baitfeeder system, re-engages the primary drag system and the fish can be hooked and landed with total control.
Okuma Fishing Tackle, Inspired Fishing
At Okuma Fishing Tackle we deliver more than just fishing gear. We deliver the motivation to hit the water, the energy to maintain focus and the excitement that injects every cast with high expectations. Benefits of Baitfeeder Technology
- Includes a secondary drag system for bait fishing
- Allows fish to eat baits without feeling resistance
- Maintains exceptional line control in all bait fishing appllications
- Disengages with a turn of the reel handle to re-engage the primary drag system
- Suitable for all fish species from ultra-light trout and panfish to walleyes, catfish, stripers and saltwater species.

Questions about Okuma Avenger ABF B Series Baitfeeder Reels
Q:
With the abf 80b how many meters (yards) of 1mm thick line can i get on it?
Answer: Most all reel spools are marked for lb test AND line diameter they accept and ALL fishing line are marked not only with the lb test but also the diameter of the line. 1 mm line is equal to approx 100 lb test so if the spool isn't marked for diameter simply check what lb. test, such as how much 25 lb, then extrapolate. Podran por favor darme las medidas del modelo 30b? Gracias
Q:
which version would be best for crappie jigging
Answer: it depends on your pole the 40 is good around
Q:
Would this work with 20-30 lb braid or mono line?
Answer: 20-30 braid would be too thin for this size reel. I would suggest thicker braid 40-65 lb braid to a leader or using straight mono.
Answer: I use a 20# mono backing, 30# braid main-line, and 40# nylon leader. Great “fit” for the reel.
Answer: I have 50 lb braid on,works perfectly.
Answer: Not sure about mono, I'm sure it would be ok but I have 50lb braid on mine and it works fine

Q:
can I purchase an okuma avenger AV 3000 replacement handle
Answer: Go to amazon website first then check okuma site
Q:
how is it compare with ABF90
Answer: well the abf 80 is a b series for 2015 And this is not just in saltwater fisheries where baitfeeding spinning reels allow live baits to swim uninhibited, i hope it will be usefully, you can see on http://www.okumafishing.com/
Answer: Excellent. Smooth, reliable, nice reel. The price is great because of the performance of the reel.
Answer: I believe its the same reel just the next size smaller
Q:
Which model is small enough to ice fish with but tough enough for walleye fishing as a dead stick
Answer: The 30b should fit the bill. These are pretty small, and as for toughness, we use them for bruiser size carp (20+ lbs) with great success. Keep in mind the spool size is quite small, we use braided line for the thinner diameter.
Answer: The 20 is probably your best all around for fresh water
Answer: It depends how good a fisherman you are.
Q:
how much braid does the abf 20 baitfeeder hold?
Answer: I don’t use braid but I think they use backing then braid on top
Q:
If I tighten up the baifeeder (rear) drag, the reel will not switch to the main drag (manually or automatically). Is this defective?
Answer: Check the main drag settings. If that is not the issue, then I would suggest sending the reel to Okuma or back to the retailer for an exchange. The main drag should engage regardless of the baitfeeder drag settings.
Answer: If you have the button for the baitfeeder flipped the main drag will not work even if you tighten the baitfeeder all the way. It's not defective!
Answer: Will it if you lossen the rear drag ?
Q:
Can you hear the bait clicker when your getting a bite?
Answer: You here the clicker when a fish grabs the bait and runs with it (hence the term bait runner reels).
Q:
Could the abf 30 hold 65lb braided line
Answer: That reel size is not designed for such a heavy line. Although briaid is very thin for its strength you should use the size which you reel and rod are designed for to avoid damage.
Answer: I wouldn't recommend it. The drag isn't strong enough for that. They have a larger size, though.
Q:
Does this avenger abf com in an abf 90 model?
Answer: nope maybe the older model but I have not found a 90 model yes one is listed but it's a misprint
Q:
how much 20lb monofilament will it hold?
Answer: I am not sure, I only use 50lb braid.
Q:
What's different about the 80b than the 65b? They look identical
Answer: sorry I have never seen a 80B
Answer: The spool size. 80 is bigger.
Answer: just the line capacity
Q:
Is the handle placement ambidextrous?
Answer: You can install the handle to the left or right side of the reel depending on which position is more comfortable.
Answer: yes it is
Answer: Yes
Answer: yes it is
Q:
Can you hear the bait clicker when getting a bite
Answer: It's quiet. The plastic clicker broke first week
Answer: Yes if within 5 to 10 feet.
Q:
Does the handle screw into the body or does the handle rely on the screw on the opposite side of the reel frame to secure handle in place?
Answer: The handle is attached by tightening the handle screw cap which is located on the opposite side of the reel from the handle assembly.
Answer: I have to look and see I'm at work now but my okuma blue ones screw in to the body
Answer: The handle side has slots if 1 of them is bent or broken you'll need a new handle unit
Q:
Can you switch the handle to the right side?
Answer: Yes, you can do it
Answer: Yes !!
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes you can
Q:
Is the 65b a good fit for a 12' pole?
Answer: 65b is a bit heavy but would work for a 12 pole it would be good center of gravity but too light of a pole would ruin the balance. Took my 65b off my Airwave Elite 1142XH and grabbed a BF55 but the 65b was fine just wanted to upgrade.
Answer: Yes, I have mine on a 12’ Diawa Beefstick.
Answer: That's a big reel for a12' rod. That reel will handle anything though. Enjoy

Q:
I currently have 2 ABF 40's and 1 55, does the 30 have the same capability of fresh or salt water fishing?
Answer: The 30 size would be good for light inshore or bay fishing in saltwater .
Answer: Haven't used it in salt water. I live in Minnesota and use it on rivers. It is very dependable and hasn't failed me. And I've landed large carp, flathead cat, and even a muskie with it. The baitfeeder has saved me from losing my entire rig too. River carp and channel cats are very aggressive biters.
Answer: Yes but it is meant for lighter tackle
Q:
What makes the "b-series" different than the other ABFs?

Q:
Which model is equivalent to a 1000 size reel
Answer: You must be talking about a big reel, my biggest Okuma reel is the ABF55 reel which is big enough for any fish here in the US. I have in my collection of reels 56 reels but the ones I end up using is one of my Okuma bait reels depending what I'm fishing for, I love them, I can't say enough good about them!!!!

Q:
I recently saw a mg30 bait runner reel. is the abf30 a newer version?
Answer: The Mg 30 is a discontinued model. The ABF-30b is the most current generation Avenger baitfeeder reel.
Q:
Is the reel braid ready? Couldn't fi d any info on the companies website
Answer: I don't think it is braid ready. You CAN put braid on it with a backing on the spool, mono or tape. I have a 40 and no where does it say the spool is "braid ready". Braid ready means you can put super braid on the reel right out of the box with NO backing on the spool. Hope this helps. Believe me, I've gone through it all.
Answer: I don't have a 65, I have the 30 and I have braided line on it.
Q:
Is this the 80B? The picture says so but in the description the model number says its the 20B
Answer: The listing is for an 80B reel. The picture is just for reference.
Product reviews of Okuma Avenger ABF B Series Baitfeeder Reels
Young Pak : Super small reel
I'm not sure if I'm gonna like it or not. It's a little smaller than I thought it wouldve been. Super light weight though.
Michael Crocetti : Good bang for the buck.
Very smooth drag system. A little small spool.
Adam Casey : Awesome product!
This is just the right size reel that I was looking for with the baitrunner function. Small, but mighty. I use it for live threadin shad while fishing for bass. Would also make an EXCELLENT trout reel!!!
Robert : Lovin it
I have a couple other ABF30A model (the one before this one) and its great. The only issue is on the others the baitfeeder is opposit when compared to this one.
David L. : Thanks to Covid 19, I can't try them out!
Will do a proper review as soon as the beaches open........
NewEnglander : Okuma needs to follow reel size numbers like everyone else and dust-proof it better!
This reel lasted me 1 trip, 1 fish. Ok, before I get into what happened, the reel size is can be misunderstood. This is a tiny reel. Others may think this reel is a size 3000 or 300 others go by, but it's much smaller. I'd say 2000 or 2500 at max. I expected a much bigger reel. Also I have other Okuma reels and they are a tank, in a good meaning. I got the Avenger BF 40 and it's considerably larger, built for medium-heavy setups. Go to this BF 30b and you're thinking you either got the wrong order.
Also the reel is considerably cheaper built than previous Okuma reels. It's almost like a different company is making them and quality is no longer something they care about.
All plastic, the line guide flip feels flimsy and the overall reel feels very cheap in the hand. I saw complaints on other fishing outlets reviews, that the reel arm (the part that attaches your reel to the rod) is also cheap plastic and will literally brake off from your rod.
Water sealing is none existent. I caught a fish, and as I laid down my rod for sec, just the reel sitting on the ground for a minute, I got home and the reel is full of dirt. Appearently, the rear "baitrunner" brake dial is not sealed and dirt will get inside easily, ruining the whole thing. I just took it apart to get all the dirt out, it was loaded at the rear brake gears, I had to literally wash out the entire reel with WD40 and grease it back on. On that subject, the reel had ZERO grease in it! There is no lubrication whatsoever. Maybe a tiny bit of oil I saw, but no grease. This reel like this, can't last very long. Zero care about dirt proofing, zero lubrication. Do the math. I won't even mention water proof, I'm not looking for that in a 50 dollar reel, but at least dirt proof it to a certain level?
Heck, some of the cheap no-brand Chinese models are better constructed for 30 dollars less! That's why I think it's overpriced.
If you got this reel now and using it, do yourself a favor and remove the side cover and grease the gears. I guarantee you won't see much inside, also check for dirt, which will make its way inside in little time!
Pdynam : Great Followup To The Top Selling Spinning Reel In The Country
Great Carp Fishing Reels...
I purchased three of these reels (ABF30b) earlier this year specifically for Carp Fishing and they have have yet to disappoint. I paired all three of them with 8 1/2' Okuma SST Graphite Salmon/Steelhead Rods (SST-S-862ML), this setup makes for a killer combination. To overcome "fish spooling" due to limited spool yardage, we have these spooled with 15lb braided line and 6lb crystal clear fluorocarbon leader, this gives us about 230yrds of line when fully spooled. So far this season, we have pulled in many Carp in the 12~15lb range, and quite a few in the 20lb class (some 20+ minute fights with many long drag runs).
FYR: For users of the Series "A" Avenger (the first series) - the new "B" series seems to have 100% free-spool whereas the series "A" doesn't feel like full free-spool, close but not 100%.
Bobc : Okuma FTW, again
I have an ancient version of this newer "b" style reel - I'm going to say it's near 20 years old, and I fish salt. Kayak, inshore, surf and never had a problem with this reel. It's still going strong. The newer one was bought for a larger surf pole and has pulled in everything from foul hooked horseshoe crab, to speckled sea trout to large rays and even a diamond back terrapin. Smooth and strong. Baitrunner feature is something you will use and then wish every reel had this feature. About to buy another 30 or 40 series for a new steelhead rod.
D.M. : Count me as satisfied!!
I am not the guy who usually buys things like fishing reels online, but I took a chance with the Okuma Avenger. I'll have to say that I am pretty happy. Its smooth reeling and doesnt hardly weigh anything. I put it on my Okuma SST rod and they are almost made for each other. I've owned the reel for a month now, and cant even tell you how many trout I've caught. And bluegill and perch and even a nice size catfish(5lbs). Count me as satisfied!!
Jim R : It helps with picky fish
It gives you two drags so you set a lighter one to feed the bait. I got a nice stripper and crappie first time.
Michael : A True Performer
All I can say is wow! This reel is very well built and performs like a $500 reel, what a real hidden treasure. All my spinning reels are Okuma and this one is beyond belief in appearance, function and performance; I have no doubt about any inland fish whatsoever or for that matter it should handle 98% of ocean fishing as well.
Jim : Get what you pay for and this reel sucks
Wouldn’t buy it for 20$ just a cheap pos
ShakySarge : Great for catfishing
Use this reel on a Daiwa beef stick for heavy cat fishing. So well built I bought two more!
Amazon Customer : Really liking this reel so far
I originally bought an 8' heavy action Whoppin' Stick spinning combo from Bass Pro years ago and the reel it came with was not great and was finally giving out. I wanted to get a decent reel that was affordable and especially wanted a baitfeeder feature since I fish a lot at night for catfish. So, I went with this reel and I am happy I did.
For a hair under $70 I think you will be hard pressed to find a better spinning reel especially with the baitfeeder feature. The baitfeeder works great! I have read some reviews stating the clicker on the baitfeeder was not loud enough. I suppose if you are a long way away, but if you are within 10ft or so of the reel it is plenty loud. Plus it is a blast to hear the clicker start going.
- Affordable
- Smooth casting
- Smooth reeling
- Strong build construction
I cannot compare this to old Okuma reels as this is the first one I have owned, but with everything I have witnessed so far with the few times I have had it out, I would definitely buy it again.
Terry R Clark : Good Reel, But the Baitfeeder Switch Needs Improvement
Very nice reel for the money. The bait feeder drag is very smooth, as is the rest of the reel. My only complaint is that when I start reeling with the bait feeder drag engaged, the switch does not always fully disengage and shift the reel back to the front drag like it's supposed to automatically. So, I have to manually flip the switch the rest of the way before the front drag will engage. Trying to set the hook before doing this will cause you to lose fish. It's a flaw that I've read about in other reviews. By comparison, the Cabela's Salt Striker bait feeder reel, which looks almost identical, but with more ball bearings, works perfectly. However, it is more expensive, and doesn't come in the smaller sizes like the Avenger ABF. If you need the size 40 and above, want flawless performance, and don't mind spending the extra $20, I highly recommend the Cabela's model. When you're on the water (and "on" the fish), you want your equipment to do what's it's supposed to do.

Psorcon : Bargain small bait feeder
Good brand at a great price. Casts well and retrieves smoothly and I like the baited option for use with live bait, bottom-rig, or bobbers to let the fish run a little before pulling them in. Not high-end but perfectly adequate and can buy two or three of these for the price of those...
David : good reel
nice compact reel. It can still handle 20LB. braid and I use it in salt water no issues
NewEnglander : Okuma needs to follow reel size numbers like everyone else and dust-proof it better!

Long time consumer : Great little reel, but hard to clean
This reel works really well and the handle is better than the regular ABF, but I have found the b series reels MUCH more difficult to clean.
Dennis Smith : Great real. Put it on a St
Great real. Put it on a St. Croix rod and caught several Jacks over eighteen inches, two nice drum, and one twenty eight inch red. The real handle them well , the drag was smooth and consistent. The only thing I would change would be to lengthen the handle about an inch. Still, I enjoyed fishing with it so much, I purchased another one.
Jim R : It helps with picky fish
It gives you two drags so you set a lighter one to feed the bait. I got a nice stripper and crappie first time.
Marty lindsley : So Far, So Good
I spooled up my new AFB 65b with 30lb. braid with a 30lb. mono top-shot and used it this past weekend at Mission Bay in San Diego. The set-up is obviously overkill for the fish I was fishing for, but it was a perfect opportunity to try out the set-up before going after the fish I intend to use this reel for. It worked almost flawlessly. I say almost flawlessly because before the day was over, the clicking sound you would expect from a bait feeder reel when it's spooling out went from faint to non-existent. This is not an issue if you keep an eye on the reel all day. Unfortunately, After catching a dozen spotted bass and a Thresher Shark, I had my back turned and didn't realize that something BIG had grabbed the bait and had me half un-spooled before I could get on the rod. At first I though it was another boat that might have snagged the line, but it may have been a sea-lion/seal or a large shark. Whatever it was didn't even slow down as I cranked up the drag!!! I eventually had to cut the line to avoid unwanted damage. The Okuma AFB 65 is not in the same class as my other bait runner, but at about 1/3 the cost, I will certainly buy more Okuma baitrunners in the future assuming this one holds up to the test of time. Okuma really should work on the "clicker" though, that's an integral part of a baitrunner in my opinion.
Paul V. : Not Bad for Beginner Deep Sea Reel
This reel is definitely one of my new favorites. That only is it affordable but it definitely did the job when it came down to facing a school of dorados outside the Mexican coast. The two separate drags are perfect for when working with live bait wanting them to get out there without having to worry to reset the drag once you catch a fish. Those suckers were mean and yanked hard so allowing the drag to switch that an instant was amazing!
A lot of people in the boat had line issues with their rods but mine definitely stayed true. I do recommend letting some line out as the boat is going out to your location then just constantly reeling it in so line gets nice and loose. Otherwise your bait won't be able to really move freely. My other main complaint and the reason for not five stars is the switch between the two drags would sometimes get stuck and lock up the reel. I noticed this would mainly happen if the bell was open and then closed and then immediately switched. Usually switching the switch back and forth or opening and closing the bell would fix the problem but just a heads up.

Late_to_the_Party : Excellent Reel
Excellent reel and good quality. Baitrunner/baitfeeder function is excellent. The 'b' reel is a little smaller than the regular ABF, but still holds plenty of line. I fish saltwater with 20-30lb braid.
Amazon Customer : Worth every penny!!
This reel is super tough!! Tonight I caught a 35# flathead and this little reel held up as well as some of my high dollar rigs. 20# power pro and she still had plenty of line after a half a dozen good runs!! The bait runner feature is awesome as well..
Jacob S. : Great reel
Amazing reel. Bait feeder works great. It has held up for many fresh and saltwater fishing trips. Caught everything from Blue Cats to stripers to flounder to black drum. The only two thins I could possibly complain about is 1) the bait clicker is a tad quiet. It can get drowned out while on the boat or if talking to someone. It isn’t as loud as Kastking’s and 2) the sizing chart is terrible. Thought I was getting a much bigger reel. The size I got works but not as big as I thought. So try to find a picture/video of the exact reel you want to see it for yourself. But it is a very good quality reel especially for the price.

Young Pak : Super small reel
I'm not sure if I'm gonna like it or not. It's a little smaller than I thought it wouldve been. Super light weight though.
Red : Worked great
Caught 7 black drum all over 40inches the first time I used it can't keep them but still fun to catch
Tyler : Bait Feeder for fishing with kids
I fish with the Okuma ABF-30b because it saved my sons life. I fish with my kids all the time. And when I fish with my kids I use the bait feeder function on these reels. If a fish hits and pulls line I hear the clicking. That means I can put the rod in a rod holder and watch my kids. Last year my two year old son tried splashing in the water, but the place he stomped was over his head. I saw it all happen because my rod has an Avenger bait feeder reel on it. I scooped him out immediately. If I had been fishing normally I am sure he would have drowned in the creek.
I have at least 4 Okuma Avenger ABF-30bs (plus two other Okuma bait feeder reels). They are not the smoothest reels I have ever used, but they are a good deal for $50. I use the bait feed function all the time and it works well. I the bait feed when fishing bottom rigs on the Mississippi river and for lake trout in the BWCA. Also a nice feature if you want to slip bobber but need to take a break in the bushes. And again, any time you need to pay more attention to kids than a rod, you should have a bait feeder reel on it!
About 1% of the time the bait feed doesn't engage and I need to flip the lever again. But, there isn't a comparable reel for less than $150.
Also, I fish a lot. Usually a couple nights per week. I haven't worn one out yet. I pair them with rods from 6'6" up to 9'. They have caught large lake trout, big redhorse, buffalo, carp and even bass, walleye and pike.
Amazon Customer : Best reel I've ever owned.
I bought the 50b. It worked so well for big cats that I bought the 30b for lure fishing. Both have 7 ball bearings, which is huge when fishing for big fish. Reeling feels smooth and crisp, and the drag performs amazing. The drag doesn't catch at all on either. The clicker function is noticeably louder on the 50b. I can barely hear the 30b unless it's right next to me.
This is the only reel I will use from now on for my spinning rods.
Joel : Great reel
Like this reel cast very well and very smooth Retrieve both drag systems work very well had an issue self infused called okuma and they sent repair parts for just shipping cost
Landed 6 1/2 foot bull sharks with it
Late_to_the_Party : Excellent Reel
Excellent reel and good quality. Baitrunner/baitfeeder function is excellent. The 'b' reel is a little smaller than the regular ABF, but still holds plenty of line. I fish saltwater with 20-30lb braid.
Carlos : Una excelente compra, es el segundo que compro
Todo perfecto, carrete liviano, buena capacidad de hilo, rápido y comodo
Joseph C. : Heck of a deal
Really nice reel for the dollar. Smooth as silk. Dual drag with free spooling. Put it on a 15' Okuma Tundra rod with 60 lb. braid and you can cast further than any rod I have ever used. Heck of a rod and reel for under a hundred bucks.
ShakySarge : Great for catfishing
Use this reel on a Daiwa beef stick for heavy cat fishing. So well built I bought two more!
Amazon Customer : l
I'm a shimano guy but I love the durability and performance of this okuma. Ohand he price is geeat for what you get
LadyRaeB : Perhap the best line of reels
If there is a better reel at this size for this price with the baitfeeder system then I havent heard of it. this reel will take poor treatment. I havent hooked anything that could take drag from this reel. I have two of these. I have the 65 and the 80. On the 80 I have 50 power pro on a penn prevail 11 ft and on the 65 I have 50 florobraid spiderwire, on an 8ft rippin lips heavy 100+ft all day with the 80 on the 11ft and 80+ft ith the rippin lips. Buy this reel.
Caleb : Best reel on the market.
I use this reel on all of my catfishing setups and, after seeing them in use, many of my friends have also purchased a few. The baitfeeder works great, although it can be pretty quiet sometimes (1 out of 6 that I've ordered made almost zero sound while letting out line for a bite). Very durable, I've fished fresh water and salt water with zero issues on rust or wear and tear on any components. If you're considering it, do yourself a favor and buy it. Its the best reel on the market in my opinion.
