Questions about Redington BEHEMOTH Fly Reel
Q:
The 7/8 reel for 59.95? Or is that just the spool?
Answer: Looks like for the spool.
Answer: It doesn't say it's just for the spool
Q:
I want to know if it's the whole reel?
Answer: This is a listing for the full reel
Answer: It says Reel, but it is just a spool. I had to return it.
Answer: Reel in a bag. No line, no fishing rod.
Answer: Yes. This is the entire reel.
Answer: Yes it was with the one I got.
Q:
Is this the complete reel or just the spool? I ordered the black 5/6 reel, paid $87.25, and received only the spool.
Answer: Same here. It says whole reel
Answer: Complete
Q:
Does it come with a reel cover?
Answer: It comes with a nylon reel case.
Answer: Just a bag. You would need to buy a cover.
Answer: Yes this reel comes with a padded case to store it in (black case with a velcro top and the word Redington sewn in )
Answer: It comes in a reel bag
Answer: It comes in a padded bag. Not really functional as a cover when on the rod.
Q:
Is the reel a silent retrieve?
Answer: Cant answer that because I use mine upside down and maybe reversed on a fight stick with 200lb braid. I think its mostly silent, I never thought of it as loud.
Answer: It’s quiet
Q:
On the 9/10 model, what is the width excluding the handle?
Answer: Go to the Redington website for detailed info.
Q:
Does it come prespooled?
Answer: No, it does not come pre- spooled. I tip though would be to add more backing than normal because of the way the arbour is desinged.
Answer: Great question. This particular item is just a fly reel. If we can be of assistance with a fly line, please give us a call at the fly shop at 937-434-8472. We carry RIO, SA, Airflo, and Orvis Fly Lines. We will professionally rig the reel ready to fish with a fly line.
Answer: No it does not. If you would like to purchase the fly line from us we will spool it for you. 208-454-8188
Answer: No, To my knowledge only cheap kits come spooled. This a very nice reel for the money handles steelhead like a dream
Answer: No it does not
Answer: Mine did not.
Q:
Will it be enough 250yds of 20lb backing on the 9/10?
Answer: By my calculations it should theoretically fit about 265yds of 20 lb dacron, so 250 should work fine. I would highly recommend using 30lb on your 9/10 weight rod however, since it is common to use leaders and tippets with higher breaking strengths than 20lb. Redington recommend 200yds of 30lb. Let us know if you have any more questions.
Answer: Hi,
Answer: If your spooling for a 9/10wt rod/line use 200 yards of 30# dacron. If you need more backing yardage use GSP or braid. Don't bother with 20#.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Does the Behemoth include a sealed drag? If not, is the reel still suited for lots of saltwater fishing?
Answer: I use it here on Hawaii for a year now. Works really well in saltwater because its not sealed. Unscrew, wash, grease, close. Sort of replaced my Penn Big game reels. That good. Wish it had more leverage but otherwise this is the future.
Answer: It’s GREAT for saltwater
Answer: Yep, drag is sealed. Reel is saltwater safe.
Answer: I’m not sure but I don’t think it is suitable for salt water, goggle it.
Q:
do this come with reel and spool? I'm new on this and is for a gift
Answer: Yes, all that's needed is line backing and then the fly line. As an aside this is a very nice fly reel for the money.
Q:
Is this reel good for salt water
Answer: Definitely. Match the reel size to your fishing environment (i.e., 7/8wt inshore, 11/12wt offshore) and make sure to clean it thoroughly after use in the salt as the drag system is not sealed.
Answer: Great question. Yes the Redington Behemoth was designed for great performance, low cost for saltwater and heavy freshwater fishing. As with any application in saltwater, you will need to rinse the gear after each use. If our pro-staff can be of any service with this fly reel and matching it to a rod and line, please give us a call at 937-434-8472. Have a great day.
Answer: Yes, I was highly recommended to purchase this fly reel by my local shop.
Q:
Does this reel have a sealed drag system to prevent corrosion?
Answer: Unfortunately, it does not have a sealed drag. However, the drag components are not metal so they will not corrode. We use this reel in the salt and it has performed very well.
Answer: The reel is saltwater ready. But the drag is not fully sealed. I would always recommend rinsing your gear in freshwater after every saltwater use.
Answer: The BEHEMOTH's drag is capped, not sealed.
Answer: Hi,
Answer: Rust
Answer: Yes.
Q:
Does the 9/10 and 11/12 have the same pounds of drag?
Answer: I’m not 100% sure between the two sizes but my 9/10wt reel has more drag than my expensive 12wt reel I use for tarpon... I’d imagine they are the same. If you are worrying about not having enough drag... you should be more worried about having too much. If I crank down on my 9/10, it’ll break most leaders I use.
Answer: Cast aluminum
Q:
Does it come with and extra spool? Mine did not have one.
Answer: No it doesn’t come an extra spool.
Answer: No just the complete reel, you have to purchase an extra spool
Answer: No it only comes with one spool
Q:
I narrowed down that for the fish I'm going after I need 30 pound backing. How many yards would fit the 7/8 reel with no problem?
Answer: Depends on the fly line(s) you are pairing it with. With a standard WF 8wt floating line you will fit 150 yds when stacked tight and neat. There are unfortunately not many "no problem" situations, gotta consider all the variables in your situation.
Answer: About 75-90 yards is ideal. Have it wrapped at a fly shop, it will be wrapped much tighter than you can do on your own. It makes for a tight spool and no issues later down the line. This reel is great BTW, I love it.
Answer: Go to gel spon backing you can hold more line and for big fish more line is key.
Answer: 100 yards easily
Q:
Is the reel reversible? Can it be set up for right hand
Answer: Yes, it's easy to reverse it to right hand retrieve. It's a great reel.
Answer: The Remington Behemoth can be set up as a left or right handed retrieve
Q:
Is the gunmetal 5/6 just spool for 59 or the reel it doesnt clarify
Answer: Spool
Q:
Whats the purpose of having a spare spool?
Answer: The spare spool is handy if you want to swap out line types. For instance a sinking line and a floating line. You could have a spool with each fly line setup and if you need to change, you can do so easily without swapping out/buying separate reels.
Answer: Also if you’ve ever dropped a reel and bent the spool... that happened to me once on a different reel, simply bought a new spook instead of a whole new reel. That’s not the purpose though. Ideally it’s so you can have different lines, like sinking, floating, of different weight. I use 8wt rio outbound short on my fav 9wt for surf fishing, then a 9wt F-WF shooting head on another spool. I change them out at least once per trip. It’s easier and cheaper to do than have 2 rods.
Answer: So you can change lines on your reel by changing the spool. I use this reel on my streamer rod so I have one spool with full float line and on the other spool I have a sink-tip line. That way I can exchange them depending on the water/technique I am using.
Answer: Sometimes anglers want to switch lines depending on the conditions of the water. Still water fishers may have different density sinking lines on different spools. Spey fishermen may have different shooting heads on different spool. I hardly ever have to switch lines, because I try to go out with a "do it all" line. Also, at this price, it might make more sense to buy another reel, rather than an extra spool.
Answer: Not sure about you but i fish all over Nevada and California witch means all different types of fly line for example floating line on one and sinking line on the other so you don't have to change line or buy more reels
Answer: For some people it is worth it because u can change line from sinking to floating without hassle
Answer: Changing lines quickly.
Q:
The 9/10 wt reel is 14oz the 7/8 is only 8oz. For a 11wt rod wouldn't i be better off balancing it with the 7/8 and 10wt or 11wt line for all day use?
Answer: 9/10. If you are using an 11wt rod I'm assuming you're targeting big strong fish. You'll want the extra backing space.
Answer: The 7/8 has a big spool. I would just make sure that it will hold enough backup with the line you choose.
Q:
I have a 13' 8/9wt Spey rod would the behemoth 9/10 reel be an appropriate reel for it or the 7/8?
Answer: Thank you for your mail. I would go with the 9/10. This is the best reel on the market when you consider the price point. The reel will balance out the rod well and has the capacity that you will need. Any other questions feel free to call me at 208-887-4863. Thank you
Answer: Great question, I would recommend the 9/10 not only to balance out the longer 13' spey rod, but it will also have the sufficient backing and fly line capacity for a 8/9 spey rod. If our staff can be of any assistance, please contact us at the fly shop at 937-434-8472. Have a great day.
Answer: I would say if your fishing in a river you could use a 7/8 , but if you are fishing saltwater use the 9/10 either one will work.
Answer: 9/10 will be what you need,I my self have a 9/10 w ,14ft that I put the 11/12 reel to it balance the rod plus extra backing on reel was a added bonus.
Answer: For a spey rod I would roccomend going for the bigger spool. Definitely go with the 9/10
Answer: Always go bigger on Spey and switch.
Q:
Can you palm this in addition to the drag?
Answer: I have 2 of them. The 5/6 is smaller than my 8/9 and can be palmed. I have never tried it with my larger one because the drag is so damn sweet on these.
Answer: Yes you can palm the outer rim.
Answer: Yes but this reel has so much drag... might as well use it.
Q:
Is it reversible for left hand use?
Answer: It originally came setup for left hand use out of the box.
Answer: Yes - it is
Q:
Is it all metal?
Answer: No, spool gear is a giant beveled plastic gear. Almost no wear.
Q:
Has anyone in saltwater had a problem with the reel? About to get one if not.
Answer: Took it to Cuba twice for 10 days..no problems. Great reel (especially for the price).
Answer: Have not used mine in saltwater yet , sure love this reel
Answer: This reel is not anodized and is not recommended for salt water.
Answer: The reel will work great in Saltwater! But, get yourself a better reel, yeah, I know, but spend a few more bucks!
Answer: Only fish saltwater with mine no issues so far .
Answer: Nope just clean it right after your done...have a 12wt for my tarpon setup
Q:
What size is this??
Answer: The reel is available in a 4 to 12 weight model. The exact model can be selected in the drop down box. Thank you.
Answer: 5/6 wt. can be used with a 5 or 6 wt rod. Make sure your fly line wt matches the wt of your rod.
Answer: 8 through 10 weight fly lines.
Answer: It’s huge! I put 300 feet of backing on it with bonefish flulike and still had room.
Answer: 7/8wt.
Q:
Does the reel have a sealed drag?
Answer: This reel does not have a sealed drag, though is designed to keep contaminants out.
Answer: Yes it does
Q:
what is the difference between extra spool models and large arbor models?
Answer: Redington's Behemoth reel is a large arbor design. The "V" shape of the spool allows for a large amount of backing to be held along with your fly line of choice. The "extra spool" is just that, an extra spool. It is not a difference in design.
Q:
Is the reel made in China?
Answer: The Redington Behemoth is made in China. Still a solid reel and great bargain.
Q:
Why should i gey the 2 year extended warranty when there is a lifetime warranty that comes with the reel?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Don't pay for an extended warranty. The reel is covered by Redington.
Answer: No need to in my opinion. Given the build of this reel, I doubt you will ever have to use the warranty.
Q:
What size reel for a redington vice 5wt 9’? Would I do 4/5 or 5/6?
Q:
Can i use 65lb braid as backing? And if not why? (65lb braid =17lb mono in diameter)
Answer: Using s braid as backing should be fine. It's just seldom done as inexpensive mono is much cheaper. For trout on a 4 to 5 weight you seldom ever get into your backing.
Answer: I am not really up on the technical aspect of diameters. However, I don't see why you couldn't because there more than enough room on this reel. If there is a lot of heavy backing I might suggest buying up a size. For instance, if your throwing 7 wt line, purchase the 9/10 wt reel to accommodate more backing
Answer: cant see why you can't put anything on it you want. more diameter line = less line. i suspect the 20 and 30 lb is to tell you how much to put on so you still have room for fly line and leader.
Q:
i wants to know it is the whole reel?
Answer: This is in fact for the whole reel. Let us know if you have any other questions!
Q:
For the 9/10 weight reel would you suggest 200 yards 30 pound backing with weight forward 10wt 100ft fly line for fighting redfish? 10wt rod fyi
Answer: I am not familiar with redfish. The metrics specified will meet your needs. Cheers
Answer: Yes, 200yds of 30lb would match up nicely.
Q:
For the 7/8 reel will I need 100 yrd. backing and 100 yrd. Fly line?
Answer: For this reel its recommended that you use 200 yards of backing and whatever fly line you prefer. fly lines are typically 100 yards or there are expert distant tapers that are 120 yards.
Answer: Depends on what your fishing for. If the fish your after does alot of long running then 150 to 200 yards of backing will be fine. I have 150 yards of backing on my reel and it fits fine. I don't think any company makes 100 yard fly line. 40 yards is the usuall length. Get a Rio Line that has welded loops and you will be fine.
Answer: I put on 150 yards of backing and it was a little to much.
Q:
What size fly line should i use for big pike, musky n bass? I have a predator 11wt with a 7/8 behemoth
Answer: 8wt
Q:
Can I purchase a spare spool for this reel
Answer: Yes you can.
Q:
Are these reels sealed for saltwater?
Answer: No not sealed. Good thing. Use, rinse
Q:
Is this a 5/6 reel with spool new
Answer: Yes! It is my last one.
Q:
Does the free shipping apply to international shipping ie New Zealand ?
Answer: Great question. Unfortunately, our Free Shipping is only offered in the USA. Due to high shipping fees for international shipment, we do have to charge a fee. If we can be of any service, please contact us directly at the fly shop at 937-434-8472.
Q:
Does it have anti reverse features?
Answer: I've never heard of a fly reel having anti reverse....reels one way then drag spins the other way
Answer: It’s a standard fly reel. It has a constant drag with a crazy 22lbs of drag. There’s no way to stop it from reversing.
Answer: You can set your drag heavier to prevent line from being pulled out easily, but if enough force is applied to overpower the drag it will let line out. When the line comes off the reel, the whole spool will spin.
Answer: Yes and amazing drag
Q:
Does this have a sealed drag for sat water?
Answer: Nope just clean it after ur done, have a 12wt for my tampon setup
Q:
Redington predator 9 foot 11wt rod, I wanted to put the 7/8 weight Behemoth, good or no? what size fly line do you recommend for big Pike and musky
Answer: Hi David,
Answer: That reel will not fit an entire 11wt line with the reels backing capacity. 10/11 weight lines are used for pike and musky because they are able to throw really large flies. I'd go with a 10wt, just my opinion.
Q:
what material?
Answer: It's a lightweight die-cast metal
Answer: Cast aluminum
Answer: Reel is aluminum I believe and the spool is a pot metal
Answer: I'm pretty sure it's anodized Aluminum. That' what it feels and sounds like to me. I like it.
Q:
Sealed drag ? What's your thoughts of it for bass fishing ?
Answer: the drag is sealed and i use it as my reel on my 7wt for bass, I definitely reccomend it
Answer: Usually go for trout and real smooth. Holds plenty backing
Product reviews of Redington BEHEMOTH Fly Reel
stephen kelly : Clicker broke fast
Love the reel but clicker went out in a week
Jon : Best big arbor reel for the money
This reel was recommended by a friend for salmon fishing in Alaska. It did not disappoint! So many fish reeled in and the drag performance was stellar. Many 20+ pound fish swimming in hard current and this reel was absolutely a beast. Definitely recommend
Diane Villegas : love it
Awesome reel for the price.
M. Walton : ‘Merica Approved
Excellent feel! Upgraded to this reel because my old reel’s drag was acting up. This reel has an amazing arbor, big but comfortable and light weight. Strung this up with some blue Piscifun float line and some Scientific Angler Red/white/blue backing - looks amazing! Literally feel like George freakin’ Washington out there fishing - Casts like a bald eagle flying through the air and the drag sounds like the star spangled banner - ‘Merica!!!!!!
LBL : Behemoth Reel a Good Value
Lightness of reel and extra spools are inexpensive
kevin whiteford : Great quality
Great reel, solid and lightweight.
Tim Turkington : Great reel, great drag, great price.
I needed a reel strong enough to handle 15 to 25 pound king salmon in the Lake Ontario tributaries. Most important to me was a strong & smooth drag. I was ready to spend up to $100 more than I paid for the Behemoth because I wanted to be sure the drag would properly handle these fish. I'm glad I kept looking & found this reel. It turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. The drag is extremely strong. I had no problem fighting the salmon even when they got in the current & tried to go back to the lake. I really dont see any reason you would ever have to crank down the drag all the way on this reel unless you wanted to break off a fish. I purchased the 9/10 size Behemoth & I am very satisfied with its performance especially at the price I paid.
Ben Swanson : Five Stars
Love this real. Easy to switch spools on the fly. Drag is easy and adjust.
My two cents : Bang for buck, great drag, and cool looking too!
Fantastic value for my first "big" fly reel... never failed me, solid drag action. Handled multiple 8-12 lb!
Ed Krystman : Reliable product
It is a great product. Will recommend it to others.
Outdoor Dad : Order it
Awesome reel for Bass, Surf fishing, and large trout! Can’t say enough.. order it.. you will not be disappointed.
600Gillaspie : Otherwise good product ruined by shipping
The Behemoth isn’t a bad reel! Let’s get that out of the way first.
I received the reel in terrible condition: the spool seems to rub terribly against the reel seat/cage. There’s a grinding/rubbing noise as it rotates. It’s clear that the flat “outside” of the spool is deformed, and you can even see it visually. I shouldn’t be surprised, as the package came to me pretty beat up: the box was nearly torn apart completely, barely being a box, but the Mylar bag it came in was fine. Despite this, it was functional enough so I decided to just go for it, as I wanted to be out on the water ASAP.
I’ve spooled up the reel with 200 yards of backing, as well as some RIO Redfish line, and having taken it out a couple of times, I can safely say that the reel isn’t bad, functions as well as could be expected given how beat up it came to me. Slinging the line through my Larson Cobalt is good, and stripping out the line wasn’t too bad. Gritty feeling, but I suspect that’s the spool being so deformed. I managed to snag a puffer and a couple ladyfish doing some wade fishing, so I’m reasonably pleased so far! Doesn’t feel as good as the Hatch reel or my Larson Guru, but those aren’t rated for line as high as 5wt.
The Redington Behemoth is definitely a decent low-cost entry reel for salt, and I’m glad I have one to mess around with before I get any further down the rabbit hole of saltwater gear! I just wish I wasn’t sent such a beat up, mispacked item. :(
Amazon Customer : Perfect
Got the biggest Behemoth and 150lb line. Mounted on a 2 f fight stick. Fun.
Jug : Awesome
Great reel!
d : Five Stars
Drag is impressive,a well built reel.
John Biedakiewicz : Alot of reel for the money!
Love this reel. Got the 5-6 in the sand color... Super sharp looking reel Esspecially when you get it lined up... The deep v arbor allows quite a bit of backing to go on, and the carbon fiber drag system is about 100x stronger than ill ever need it to be. Im very happy with my purchase, you get alot of reel for the money!
Andrew : Good product
Great reel for the price
stephen kelly : Clicker broke fast
Love the reel but clicker went out in a week
DJM : Faulty
Finally get to use and spook wobbles causing line issues. Can’t return.
Jon : Best big arbor reel for the money

Russell A : Great price!
Awesome reviews have not used it yet. Great price.
Traveler 907 : Buy it
Great upgrade
Kerry G. Davids : Excellent all around.
Using the 5/6 on a 6WT fishing for peacock bass and cichlids in the Everglades. Smoothly dial in the drag to keep the fish locked while you get the landing net ready. Highly recommend.
adam : Great product
Amazing product and fast shipping!
Ron : Solid, great value,
Solid and affordable. So far it’s as good as my Lamson reels that are more than 3x the price
LBL : Behemoth Reel a Good Value
Lightness of reel and extra spools are inexpensive
Logan Buzzard : Great seller and got here quick.
Awesome reel, looks great, feels great.
Campmaster55 : If you need a heavy, large capacity reel - this is it!
If you are throwing a 12 wt line with a large bass bug, this is about the only reel that will provide some sort of reasonable balance to the rod and reel combination. This is exactly what I was looking for for going after salmon and northern pike. That extra weight makes it easier to cast over a long day. The quality of the reel and drag system is outstanding. The capacity is huge. You can easily fit a heavy line and 200 yards of backing on the reel.
600Gillaspie : Otherwise good product ruined by shipping

LBL : Behemoth Reel a Good Value
Lightness of reel and extra spools are inexpensive
Gmoney : Great for a boat, not great for the surf
Feels like a solid reel for the money. Easy to spool up and holds a ton of line (I got 300ft of 50lb backing and 10wt line on here). The reel is not designed well for sandy conditions. I'm fishing the rod in the surf, and when the surf hits the beach sand goes flying. It gets all over you and in any open areas in a reel. While the dragged appears sealed off, there are a bunch of spots that sand gets into and the reel sounds like nails on a chalkboard until you clean it out. Yes, bit of an extreme case here but my other reels don't have the same problem. Throw them in the sand, rinse them off and they are good to go. Not this reel.
Amazon Customer : Solid reel
As order. Loaded it with 100 ft of 20 lb. backing. 100 ft of 6 wt 285 gr floating chukar line. Nice drag. I use it on big pyramid lake trout.
GSP25 : its a beast but not heavy, built well
the way the line comes on and off is so smooth for the price. when that fish is running at you, it picks up the slack quick. and its bullet proof ( I didnt actually shoot it but it could prob handle it).
Wolfy803 : Crazy good deal
I love it for it brand Redington is a big name brand and it you go to Cabela's or bass pro shop your going to pay $130-$150. For the name and price 100% worth it. For durability pay attention to the instructions that come with it. It's all how you keep up with your gear. It's a good freshwater and saltwater brand. The weight love the weight you can put alot of backing on it if you do alot saltwater fishing.
Logan Buzzard : Great seller and got here quick.
Awesome reel, looks great, feels great.
Bryan Bishop : Fish Stopping Power
I bought a 9/10 for salmon fishing and was impressed with the overall performance and quality of this reel .
I am now pulling all my high dollar steelhead reels off and loading the rods with the Behemoth. A great reel that has never let me down .
Maggie Hansen : Must check this one out!
Excellent ! Took steelhead out like a champ , can't wait to try it on sockeye in Ak!
Paullywog : Good entry level reel for pursuing bigger fish
This is a good reel for the price. It does have truly massive drag torque, however the drag adjustment knob is not nearly as smooth as my Piscifun reels - it feels "chunky". I set it up with a switch chucker 7wt line and sized up to a 9/10 reel to fit 100yds of 30lb backing. It is still a close fit.
skindog : Two thumbs up
Great product for the money
mark lindsay : Fly Reel
Light weight, solid construction. Fly Fishing
Amazon Customer : Great reel
Very impressed with the quality of this reel, great value for the money. Has an excellent drag system and is quite durable
Sweetness : Wrong brand sent - bait and switch
Great reels but seller listed Reddington and sent a different brand.
Andrew : Awesome buy!
Absolutely love this reel..... Feels great in the hands
Jade Plunkett : Excellent reel for the money
Light and heavy duty for salmon fishing
Kyle H. : Five Stars
Can not beat the price for the quality.
LBL : Behemoth Reel a Good Value
Lightness of reel and extra spools are inexpensive
Little big man : Not bad !!
Fairly nice reel but it does have a slight wobble in it that my Pflueger fly reels never had and at a cheaper price . Not all that impressed with this fly reel it could have been built a little better .
