Questions about Penn 115L2 Senator Star Drag, 700yd/50lbs
Q:
Is this New product and comes in the original box with the accesories to hold reel on the Rod?
Answer: Mine was. Check the description for new or used condition in the description.
Q:
What is a good weight class rod for the 115l2
Answer: 30-80 pound you only have 24# of drag
Q:
What is best a 114 or 115 model. I don't want a very big reel, but I need one that can hold a tight drag for large grouper using 80lb braided.
Answer: 115 is a huge reel the 114 is all you will need and it is a good reel for the price
Answer: Both of those reels use the same drag just different line capacities. The max drag us arojnd 20lbs but they are upgradeable. One thing you might want to consider is the gear ratio of these reels. They are pretty low and you'll be cranking ALOT if you doing deep drops. I have an older USA made 6/0 high speed that I got off eBay for 50 bucks.
Answer: The 115 is 9/0 size grouper pull alot the drags on the senator aren't very powerful but penn is making a new senator in the us you might want to look at those
Answer: The largest of this series drags up to 35 pounds, but, like I said, that's the largest one. To get very tight drag, you'd need to modify a smaller Senator or select another reel.
Answer: the 114 is more than enough, i use these on 600-800-pound sharks
Answer: You are barking up wrong tree-- senators are great reels but you are not going to get that out of a stock penn. Look at Alutecnos, Accurate, Avet, Duel, etc. It is not designed to handle the stress that you are going to exert on a Goliath.
Answer: I have a 14 with 100lb not a lot of line on it tho but it's just for rippin em out the holes id go 15 tho and if you can afford it go a higher ot so it doesn't kill you on reelin

Q:
Is this 9/0
Answer: Hello Jennilaine
Q:
I need the left hand
Q:
The Line Capacity of 50/700 on this reel, is that mono or braided?
Answer: 700 yds. of 50 lb. mono
Answer: Mono
Q:
what manufacture this reel "penn senator reel 0/14" ?
Answer: Penn
Q:
I only got 10lbs of drag out of mine locked down. What do I do to increase the drag to 20?
Answer: Hi Matthew, Do you have the 4/0 or 113 model? If so then that's all you get. The larger reels have more drag 6/0 or 114 has 22#, 9/0 or 115 has 24#, 12/0 or 116 has 30# and the big boy like on JAWS 14/0 or 117 has 35#. Sorry you are disappointed, I have started switching over to the AVET brand. They are a super value and are baby winches. I grew up with PENN and still use them for rock fishing and larger fish but for 30# and lower I am using AVET and Shimano with Uglystick Tiger rods. None have let me down yet. Tight Lines in 2019.
Q:
Is it right handed ?
Answer: Yes. You reel with right hand.
Answer: Yes. This is a right handed penn reel
Answer: Yes it is Right Handed
Q:
Is this made in china?
Answer: NO !
Answer: yes
Answer: Yes the only Penn reels to my knowledge that are US senator and the "gold" reels.
Q:
Can the 50/700yd catch a 600lbs yellow fin tuna or a 600lbs blue fin tuna?
Answer: I use bravefisherman braided line, 90lb on my 9/0, pulled in 3 7ft black tips and quite a few bulls averaging 6 to 6 and a half feet long with it, a 9 can probably handle a 600 lb tuna as long as you dont keep the drag super tight and go against the fish too much
Answer: I would rather use a penn international 80 for a long running big tuna. I think a 9/0 senator is
Answer: Yes but all depends on the fisherman. I string mine with 60 but my friends use 80 & 100 lb line
Answer: Absolutely, but I suggest switching to braided line. It will cut through the water faster and you will have larger line capacity. However the reel can definitely handle it!
Q:
Is this China made?
Answer: Sure is.
Q:
Does it work?
Answer: Yes
Q:
Is this 9/0
Answer: Hello Jennilaine

Q:
Is this a 6/0 or a 9/0
Answer: The 115L2 is a 9/0
Answer: 9/0
Q:
Is this the penn senator 14/0?
Answer: Not a 14/0. It’s Penn 114L2. Which is a 6/0 size reel.
Answer: Model 116L is the 12/0.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Does the 9/0 come with a reel/rod brace kit?
Answer: Yes it does.
Answer: Yes

Q:
Just bought the penn 115l2 reel and need a recommendation for a rod to match the reel's capability. fishing off san diego/baja. thanks
Answer: Bought a 2 piece 7 ft 40-80 lb rod from Santiamfishingproducts.com for my 115L2 reel, haven't tried it yet, seems like a tough rod.
Answer: My son paired his up with a Penn Ally 30-80lb. He fishes in the Gulf of Mexico
Answer: I use a PENN International V Standup, 6' XH with roller guides. Anything along those lines would be good. Check Penn's website for rod pairing suggestions.
Q:
Will this work for a wire down line?
Answer: I haven't used wire on these reels, but, I have used it non other Penns and it works fine
Answer: Yes
Q:
Penn website says 115L2 1700/80 1450/100 1200/130 for braid. Why does it say different here?
Answer: I Put on 500 yards of 100# power pro braid and roughly 250 yards of 100# mono and the spool was full.
Answer: You need to pay attention to the sizes of the reels. Also some braid is larger in diameter than others.
Q:
Does anyone know a good rod to pair with a 9/0?
Answer: I bought the 9/0 and paired it with a "Mac Daddy" all roller guide for trolling and jigging big tuna. Unfortunately I cannot give any feedback as the tuna must have been scarred of me and left. We got only small tuna (20-45#) and they were line shy both trips out last year. I've had great luck with the Ugly Stick Tiger rods and use them almost exclusively.
Q:
Can youuse 80lbs line on 115l2 ?
Answer: High fellow fisherman,
Answer: I have used as high as 90 pound.
Answer: Absolutely !
Answer: Yes.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Are they still made in the usa??
Answer: This particular reel ... YES
Answer: Not any more. You need to buy the Internationals to get US made by Penn. If you want US made try the Avet brand. I just bought an MXL and paired it with an ugly stik tiger rod 20-50. First fish I caught was 36# yellow tail on the Eldorado in June. Tite LInes
Answer: 116’s are. Others are made in China.
Q:
What is a good size rod for this reel for trolling
Answer: Stubby 30-50#
Q:
how much can the 115L2 hold of 80lb mono
Answer: I've got 300 yards of 80# braid under 550 yards of 60# mono for trolling and jigging. If you go straight 80# mono I would say around 50 yards.
Product reviews of Penn 115L2 Senator Star Drag, 700yd/50lbs

Brandon R Ness : Penn makes a great reel. Exactly as expected

Randy. : Penn Senators
I can only speak from the original Penn 9/0 made in the U.S. The reel is a very strong reel. Using this reel for 2 years in the Destin Fl. fishing waters, where large Grouper, Sow Snapper, and other bottom fish that I caught weighting anywhere from 25lbs to 60lbs in waters ranging from 127ft to 411ft. A very durable reel that had no problem. Like any fishing reel, you must take care of it and lubricate the reel. The drag washers lasted a entire fishing season with no problems fishing 3 times a week on a Charter boat. The advantage of the 9/0 vs the 6/0 is the line capacity. We used 100lb to 125lb mono line. The 9/0 would reach the 300ft depth with line left to spare.
Steven p jennings : 9/0 is a stud
What a reel Frist off know your serial numbers of the different size reel thought I was getting a 6/0 in the end got 9/0 wow 50lb test 580 yards really big will handle anything my Frist fish was a 40lb GROUPER it was nothing for the penn

Amazon Customer : ocean fishing basics
I purchased a new one to go on my new rod. My old one just turned 26, my father has some that are 40 and older. They all still work perfectly. When in doubt, go with what you know. I know this reel is as tough as they get, even if they lack the comfort and finish of some. They are not smooth or tight in operation, but if you oil them regularly they will last.
Jason W. : Extra loud clicker
Penn always has quality products, so no surprise that this is the best reel for under $150
