The PENN Fierce III spinning reels are available in a range of sizes, from 1000 to 8000. Featuring a full metal body and sideplate, along with PENN HT-100 carbon fiber drag washers, the Fierce III can handle anything inshore or nearshore. A 4+1 shielded stainless steel ball bearing system ensures smooth retrieves while the heavy-duty aluminum bail wire and superline spool allow for easy line management.

Is the bearings seal for Salt water?

Answer: I don't think any reel is 100% sealed. I think it's pretty safe in saltwater. I use this for surf fishing and it's been good. I dont take it for a swim in the beach though. After each trip I'd either wash it under the faucet or soak it when I get home. It's been a year and still works as new. I do the same for my other Penn and they lasted for years.

Answer: This reel works well for bass fishing and none salt water applications, if you want to salt water fish a different reel that is sealed and made for that application would be best.

Answer: Inshore saltwater fishing. I use it fishing off a pier and fishing in the surf.

Answer: One is in a box, the clam is in plastic. Same reel

Answer: Same thing. Usually the Clamshell cost about $10 less than the box version because most people like to keep the Box. However, I prefer the Sealed Clamshell. It is as near to the condition of when it left the factory as possible. I returned the last Box Reel because it was evident that another customer had it before me....the screws that hold the side plates were tampered with as well as a missing seal washer.

feels very stiff out of the box? anyone else experience this

Answer: Should not feel stiff on the retrieve. The drag on these reels is pretty substantial and may feel stiff though. I’d inspect for damage or improper assembly and contact either Amazon or penn about replacement if you can’t easily correct it. These reels are smooth as can be when working correctly.

How do you choose the size you want?

Answer: Depends on what your fishing for the 4000 I have caught 1 lb speckle trout up to a 50 lb Cobia , I prefer 8 -14 lb line depending on what I’m fishing for

Is this 4000 pin fishing reel good for Catching big stripers

Answer: Yes. I would even try out the 6000 or 8000 on big stripers.

Answer: I'm not a striper guy , but have caught 4' tarpon and sharks with these reels. The drag is smooth especially for the price point.

How to change from right to left handing?

Answer: You'd turn the small silver cap to loosen it (it should be loose when you first got it) all the way so the entire handle comes off. Then you can swap it to the other side.

Initially, I had some difficulty with the first reel I was sent. However, the service dept was very responsive and even upgraded me for the mistake.
A Penn reel retrieve is very impressive. You can push the handle with one finger and it will do a smooth loop. When fighting a big fish, there is no slipping. It retrieves like a marble rolling down a sheet of glass. I have not owned another reel like it. Proud to say I own a Penn reel. Quality is worth the cost.
