Answer: This is an excellent reel when used for what it is intended for. If you wanted to use it for bait finesse fishing then you will have to upgrade all the ball bearings and replace the spool with a much lighter and shallower customized one. Even after all that, this reel is not designed for very light 4 to 6 pound line. The thin line will get caught in between the spool and sides of the frame. Making it a real hassle. Also, by the time you pay for all upgrades it will cost about the same as an intended BFS reel.
Answer: No. This is not a BFS reel. You will be disappointed if you try to use this reel for ultralight finesse fishing. The best BFS reels you can get are the Shimano BFS reels. AbuGarcia also has excellent BFS reels.

Answer: I purchased a Phleuger president xt baitcaster and a KastKing royal legend baitcaster a few weeks ago. I have used them both several times now and caught bass on both. They are both, in my opinion, excellent reels. They cast great, retrieve great, handle fish great. I find no negatives on either. Your end result though will depend on other factors also: what type of rod you pair them up with, the line you use and baits for the rod/reel/line combo. As for the reels - both excellent. Maybe one looks better to your eye than the other? Hope this helps

I have been a fishing guide for over forty years and I have gone through a lot of reels (all different makes). This reel seems to take a lot of punishment. I have hauled 16 lb northern pike out of the slop with this reel and it never skipped a beat. I spooled 65lb test braid on this reel and it casts like a dream. I liked it so much I just ordered another one. I have had more expensive reels that have not performed as well. I highly recommend this product. Post script: I now have purchased 5 of these outstanding ree!s.

I've had several versions of the president reels in the series. I've had a president on at least one rod in my boat for the last ten years and this new model is great. Not as good as the wlp 2 from a few years ago but a big step up from the 73lpx series. Good solid drag and I love the handles.

There is no reel worth more for the price, period. The only issue you will have is once you go below 4 on the brakes we with a 3/8 oz weight or smaller, but this is the king of value reels. It should easily be $150 to $200. It's flawless and easy to master.

Great reel!!! I use 20 pound power pro braid and this reel casts great! Most the time depending on the weight of the lure and wind conditions I cast with no breaks on just the spool tension adjusted to a slow fall. I love my quantum smoke s3 but I have had more backlashes with that reel than this Pflueger. Very impressed for the price. Wish they made other gear ratios in this reel.

ALEPI : Practice a little before your trip if your a spin fisherman, but you should catch on quickly.
This real was purchased for a Canada trip. I have been fishing from about 8 years old and am 62. I found this online and tried it as it is a mid level real. for some they think it expensive and for others it is at the cheap end of their spectrum. For the money I believe it to be an excellent value. The reason I mentioned to practice a bit is you need to get it set properly to avoid the dreaded backlashes many experience with this type of real, which is not real hard but if you have always been a spin fisherman you might find it not quite as easy. My preference was to use this for pike, and trolling for lake trout, and spin fishing for walleye.

The biggest fault with this reel is that the initial quality was equal to or worse than the Abu Garcia Black Max reels that I can often buy for around $30. I gave it 3-stars instead of lower since I can't fully judge it since it was a poorly put together unit.

Very durable and user friendly reel for the price point. I got this on a recommendation from a buddy. Of.course it didn't hurt that it was on sale. I could not be more pleased with this reel; so much so that I purchased three more in addition to it.

I've been using this reel for a while now and it has been excellent in every way. I use it paired with a 6'6" Bass Pro Crankin' Stick casting rod. The rod and reel together are extremely lightweight and agile, and it is easy to tune for a variety of lures.

I bought two of these Pflueger President XT baitcasting reels, one for my 12 yr old son and one for me (our birthday presents). We used them for 7-days straight, fishing in Northern Minnesota and they performed flawlessly. My son had never used a bait caster and he was able to dial in the settings within a few casts (just followed the directions that came with the reel). Both of us had a few backlashes but only when we were trying to see how far we could cast our lures. We caught a lot of fish including several 3-4 lb bass and northern pike, these reels handled them without a hitch. I would absolutely recommend this product to a beginner or intermediate fisherman wanting a decent baitcasting reel at an affordable price.

I set the side pressure adjustment so the bait would slowly fall and the spool didn't over run when hitting the water or solid surface. From there I started with the magnetic cast control on 10 and kept turning it down cast after cast. Finally settled on 5.5. I could perhaps go even lower but I get plenty of distance and not a backlash in sight, with no need to thumb it at all. Smooth and plenty of power. I own a Bass Pro Shops Tourney Special which will backlash if you look at it wrong, no matter how you set it. My previous favorites were a pair of H2O Mettles. The Pflueger is easier to adjust since there are no internal pins to mess with to change the brakes. You'd be hard pressed to find a batter baitcaster in this price range. The drag star appears to be plastic. Only wish would be that the drag was made of metal. I guess they have to cut corners somewhere to keep the price down.

Took a little practice to dial it in but this is my first baitcaster. I dont have the expirence to tell you this would be better than others but I can say it does cast very well and will do great from 1/4 ounce and up. Easy to use braking controls and is very smooth. I have used mine quite a bit before reviewing and I am very happy with this reel. I purchased because of the reviews and am thankful that I did.

This is my first baitcaster and it is just awesome.Got it on a Berkeley Cherrywood rod with some 20lb power pro super slick. Once you get the brakes and tension set just right it will cast a country mile, especially with this line.
I have the XT spinning reel and it is equally awesome so that’s why I decided to try the XT baitcaster. If you’re just starting out with a baitcaster I highly recommend the President XT. You will not be disappointed.

Very nice reel. Been out of fishing for while and needed an upgrade. I didn't have much to compare to but just ordered a second cheaper reel for a bass tournament...that slightly cheaper reel really shows how great this one really is! Nice looking, nice feel with the cork. Very satisfied!
