Answer: I have caught lots of carp during my youth and would consider this reel a bit of an over kill. Big carp can be bulls for a little while but too much pressure and the hook comes out. You may be tempted to put too much pressure on a big carp with this reel but if you have the cool and patience, the reel will take any thing I have seen in fresh water.

Answer: How do you want the drag set? Weight on end of 50# test line with an 18 foot rod held at a 45 degree angle? I use 30# braided backing so I set my drag to break a 17# mono line when my 18 foot rod is held at a 45 degree angle. That system has held 40# reds, 17# king mackerels but lost what I think were sharks. Hope that helps.

Answer: If you are using braid try installing about 15 yards of mono, then tie on the braid. The mono will keep the line from slipping on the spool.

Answer: Hi. First you'll need to remove the knob opposite to the handle. Then screw off the handle (there is a little white cap inside, you'll have to remove it too). Put the white cap and the handle on the opposite side the way they were, then screw the knob back and it's done.

How does this reel compare in quality to a daiwa bg 8000..? at about 1/2 the price, it's very tempting.

Answer: I own both reels and have used them for 2 years plus. They have been used for 20-25 surf fishing trips. Both operate equally well but I have only once had a fish I could not stop on the Dr. Fish reel. The hook pulled out before I could even slow it down and that was after about 200 yards of a straight run. I wash and re-oil both reels after each use and have experienced 0 corrosion with either reel. I will purchase a Dr. Fish when this one is retired. DFW

Answer: This reel is great for the price. I was very happy with it. My other reel is a 7000 but after getting spooled by a monster ray I decided to go with this big boy vowing to never let another fish spool me. Also if your surf fishing that 8000 probably won’t cast as far as this 12000

Answer: I like the longer spool for farther casting. The action is also very smooth. I can't compare it to the Daiwa 8000 because I don't own one. But I think the Dr. Fish Saltwater 10000/12000 is well worth the price.

Update: The reel performed very well in the surf at Bolivar Peninsula this weekend. (Aug. 21-22). I was able to get about 240 yds. of 80lb. (Saplize) camo braided line on it. This thing will cast a “country mile”!! Very happy so far. No “level wind” issues like some reviews stated. Gonna buy another one for my 12’ Fiblink “Speedmaster” rod. Also seems to be a very good drag. Very smooth. No big fish yet, but i don’t think this reel will have any problem with big shark, or bull reds.

I’m very disoriented. June 22 which was father’s day was the first I use this reel since I bought it and the first time I cast it out I could not reel back my line on to it evenly the reel stuck in one place and was not moving up and down to spool back the line so I lost a lot of line from it tangling up. This reel retrieves smoothly but for large fish the drag is too soft and unpredictable. When the drag is adjusted to near FULL drag the line is still being speedily released. With this being the case at hand, landing a 75 lbs or heavier fish is found to be difficult with limited success. This summation is based on my personal experience fishing with this reel in coastline Georgia.

I bought this reel for an anticipated upcoming fishing trip with my son - our fist time surf fishing. My second cast into the surf and the locking nut on the handle fell off and was lost in the surf. It's unfortunate because I think it is a really good reel. Amazon refused to allow a return for replacement because a month had passed since I purchased it. The company is located in China so I thought there was no ability to seek help there but to my amazement Dr. Fish reached out to me and sent me a new handle, locking nut, and two neoprene reel covers to boot. I changed my review from a one star to a four star. Thanks Dr. Fish!

The reel came as a left handed reel. It came with no instructions or information on how to change it to a right handed reel. We worked on it for hours and it just didn't work well for us compared to our other fishing poles. Really disappointed.

I purchased this reel for surf fishing. It is a large spinning reel, but fits nicely on my 10.5' surf pole. I think the only negative thing is the bale is not quite as smooth as my Mitchell 300! But, for the price and performance, I would highly recommend this product.
