Questions about Daiwa Goldcast Spincast Reel, GC80
Q:
Will the gc120 fit onto an abu diplomat 662 zoom rod?
Answer: do not know.i put mine on 6 and 6 inch med heavycherrywood rod and works great
Q:
What weight line will it hold?
Answer: It comes with an 8 pound line, but, is also good with 6 pound. My opinion anyway. I love the reel.
Answer: have no problems with 10# test line that I put on.
Q:
What lb. test line is the GC80 spooled with?
Answer: I believe its spooled with 8, but i use 12 in mine
Answer: 10 lb
Answer: Not sure what it came with. I use 10 mono on the reel now with no problems.
Answer: Sorry I'm a novice fisherperson, have no clue, we use for panfish and have no problems...
Q:
I use braid....Is this reel compatible with braided fishing line....?
Q:
Are all the parts on this constucted of metal? Is the thumb lever metal or plastic?
Answer: they are all metal including the handle...the knob to reel with is plastic
Answer: Plastic. We have been very disappointed in this reel. The Abu 270 is a much better reel
Q:
Is this reel compatible with braided line....?
Answer: yes...i use 10lb braid
Answer: No,
Q:
What's the difference in the GC 80, 100 or 120?
Answer: GC80 you would use on a medium/Light GC100 Medium Action GC 120 for medium/heavy rod... GC 80 makes a great real for light casting rods and each reel has different line capacities because of the sizes of them
Answer: As you move up from the 80 to the 120 the weight and amount of line the reel can handle increases.
Answer: 80 is smallest. Best for overall fishing. Caught 8 lb bass with it but great for smaller fish
Answer: GC80 rated for 8# test line, GC100 for 10# test and , of course GC120 is rated for 12# test line.
Q:
I use braid....Is this reel compatible with braided fishing....? line
Answer: Thank you for your question.
Answer: No!!! Do NOT use braided line with this reel. Braided line will imbed itself with the line on the reel and you will not be able to cast properly.
Answer: yes...i use 10lb braid on mine
Answer: Yes it is, especially the high strength fused lines like Firewire or Fireline.
Q:
How do you switch handle sides?
Answer: The above answer is correct. Unscrew and remove the cap on the non-handle side. Remove the screw you will find under the cap. Also remove the plastic sheath the screw goes into. On the handle side, remove the large screw. The handle will come off. Pull out the "shaft" the handle was screwed into. Put the shaft into the empty hole on the other side, then screw the handle into it. The plastic insert and other screw go in where the handle was. It can be pretty tight pushing the plastic shaft in even after aliging the edges of the hexagonal shaft.
Answer: It looks like taking out the screw on the handle switching sides. I haven't changed mine but I'm looking at the parts breakdown that comes with the reel. I would doubt that there is any big trick to it. I may switch mine to match my other spinning reals now that I think about it. If I find anything unusual I will post.
Q:
What is it spooled with?
Answer: A generic 10 or 12 pound mono. I always remove this and replace it with 10-lb Triline sensation. Great setup. I bet I can cast a 1-once plug further than anyone on the planet with this setup.
Answer: 10 lb test
Product reviews of Daiwa Goldcast Spincast Reel, GC80
marcel roberts : super
je le cherchais et jai trouver pas cher
Barbara Junge : Very good closed face reel
Very good closed face reel. Smooth casting that can pull in lots of fish. Also very easy to use for kids and beginners.
Susan Geipel : Not Happy with this purchase
This item was sold as new but appears to be used and has issues with the bearings and the line it came with.
Tom O. : Best Spincast Reel Available
The three models of the Daiwa Goldcast are the best spincast reels available. But that's not saying much, because spincast reels are the cheapest made reels in the world. But I like spincast reels for fishing trout and other smaller freshwater fish. The nature of spincast reels is that they are the easiest reels to cast with. Even children can cast with these reels.
A couple areas of concern: the drag wheel turns the opposite direction that it should. To me, it should turn clockwise for additional drag, but for some reason, turning it clockwise loosens the drag. This won't be a problem once your used to it, but they could have made it more intuitive.
Another thing, this reel used to be made in Japan, now it is made in Thailand. I guess Japanese companies have learned about outsourcing too.
Amazon Customer : ... cast reels one on the way for father's day love them no problems with them three over twenty yrs ...
Have three gold cast reels one on the way for father's day love them no problems with them three over twenty yrs old.
Michael Henry : Not for me.
Can't brag on this reel. Just is not a quality reel. Sticking with my top of the line Zebcos..
Thomas : Grat little reel
I have been using this model of reel for my wife and daughter for years and they love them. This one I bought for my grandson.
JKL, Seattle : Great reel
Great reel; easy to use and a great size for packing in your suitcase.
Lovin’ life ‘20 RJ : Seems well made.
I sent the first reel back because I tied a slip knot on to the line and the retrieve will not pick the knot up without binding on the reel. That may be because the existing line is too thick. I did not know this so I sent it back ‘the 80 model’ and got the next size up which is the 100. It is rated for thicker line and also came with thicker line so I was unable to test but I’m going to roll the dice and hope when I put thinner line on it will take the skip knot into the reel and not bind up. Seems like a good reel. Never tried a Dawai so we will see.
J.T. I. : They are the best spincast that you can buy
I've had 9 off these reels over a span of 20 years. They are the best spincast that you can buy. I have ordered parts from Daiwa and replaced bushing and any other part that might be worn from use. One suggestion to Daiwa if you used 2 bearings where you have the 2 bushing on the handle no other reel with 8# test line could touch it. When new it's as smooth as any bait casting reels on the market. I just ordered another, #10 and I still have all the others.
Thomas : Grat little reel
I have been using this model of reel for my wife and daughter for years and they love them. This one I bought for my grandson.
drumwraith : Not nearly as nice as I expected for a Daiwa Goldcast.
Not nearly what I expected. The one I received was in an old, banged up, pre-opened box and had been jostled around so much that parts of the reel had actually come through the box. I think it's probably a good reel but you should buy it somewhere more dependable
James P. : Have had this Goldcast reel in this size for over 30 years still works great
I used to live in Baton Rouge, La. In the late 1980's there was a large sporting goods store there that was going out of business. I bought the last two of these goldcast that they had left (and a silvercast) for a few bucks more than just one of the Goldcast. About five years ago the Silvercast reel gave up the Ghost. Literally two weeks after this Silvercast reel busted, one of the Goldcasts began to malfunction. I was able to find the cause and fixed the goldcast using a part from the broken Silvercast. I still use these reels regularly (along with the additional GC-80's I've bought since). Once a season I deep clean and lubricate each of my reels - essentially normal maintenence . That's pretty much all I have to do. These reels are ideal for finesse type fishing. I've used line weights from 4lb to 12lbs in mono or fluoro and find this reel works great. However, I would recommend AGAINST braided lines.
Michael Henry : Not for me.
Can't brag on this reel. Just is not a quality reel. Sticking with my top of the line Zebcos..
! : NOT worth buying
Arrived in a timely fashion. Casts somewhat smoothly, but it does make some extra noises when retrieving. This one is a replacement for the Zebco Z02PRO which I lost overboard when the pins did not release the line properly during a cast. I thought the Zebco was a bit smoother, but it did have that one fatal flaw.
UPDATE: June2017. My review has changed with this 1st time out fishing this year. The line spool (which moves up and down along the main shaft) has begun to have a pronounced tilt on the shaft as it moves. This results in a rub against the bottom surface of the pickup rotor assembly with each crank rotation, and in a bit of resistance in the turning of the crank each turn. Lubrication of parts is sufficient, but it appears that the fit of the Spool is just sloppy on the main shaft. I believe that the "extra noises" which I had mentioned in my 1st review last Autumn were directly related to this problem.
Based on that problem, I would not recommend this reel.
