Questions about Shimano Baitrunner D Spinning Reel (4.8:1)
Q:
Is this item durable
Answer: Yes these reels are very durable. we have caught probably over a thousand salmon with them and they never fail. They also make the best downrigger reels.
Answer: Yes. Shimano makes durable reels.
Answer: Yes it is. Very much so. Well worth the money.
Q:
How does the "auto return" feature work?
Answer: The "bait runner" feature of this reel lets you live line or drift bait with a light drag. The tension on this drag system is independent of the main drag and is controlled by a knob at the back of the reel. The "auto return" feature refers to the ability of the reel to switch to your main drag setting with a slight turn of the handle or the flip of a switch, also located at the rear of the reel.
Answer: It's mainly for live bait but I use it for patch reef fishing when I'm using multiple rods and have them in rod holders I leave it on a loose drag when fish runs he wont feel as much tension and when I set the hook regular drag then is engaged works great for yellowtail and muttons while free lining
Answer: When the reel is set to "strike" mode the drag is less and the clicker is on. Instead of having to hit the lever to "fight" mode (better drag and no clicker) the second you real it drops the lever.
Answer: As soon as you start reeling in. The feeding drag is disengage and primary drag is engaged.
Q:
can you recommend a good shimano saltwater rod to pair with this reel?
Answer: I perfer one piece rods. Ugly sticks make a lot of good heavy Rods that work well with this reel. I have an ugly stick with one and a Shimano rod with another. The ugly stick is about 6'6" and the other one is a lil over 7'
Answer: I put it on a Shimano Trevala med/heavy jig rod. Amazing setup together.....
Answer: FX S-70MHB2 shimano brand
Answer: I paired it with an ugly stick medium 7ft and very happy with the combo
Q:
I want to pair the 4000 with an ugly stik tiger lite 6'9 medium action rod. Do you think the 4000 os too small or should i shoot for the 6000?
Answer: I think you would be better off with the 6000 for a medium action rod. The 4000 is better suited for a light to medium rod.
Answer: That's a great match right. It all depends on what your fishing for too. I have the 4000 with a 6'6 ugly stik and works fine for river and lake fishing. Those shimano are strong reels I have reeled in 5ft sturgeon with them easily.
Answer: It really depends on what you are fishing for and many yards of line you are going to use. My personal opinion is that it is always better to go bigger than you think you are going to need. I use the 12000.
Q:
How do the series numbers work 6000 and 8000 which is bigger or hold more line
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: 8000 is larger. The larger the number the larger the reel.
Answer: The 8000 is bigger. The higher the number the bigger the reel.
Answer: The larger the number the more line capacity. Check reel capacity before ordering so it matches the type of fishing you want to do.
Answer: The smaller the #, the smaller the reel, the less line it will hold.
Answer: The larger the number the larger the reel.
Q:
Is the 4000 small? Want to use it for red drum and trout. Also the 8000, will it handle some monster alligator gars?? Help
Answer: The 4000 is small enough for Trout and Reds, but I have caught sharks up to 5' on it as well. The 8000 will handle pretty much anything you throw at it if you spool it with some good braid (Power Pro) and can chase the fish in your boat. I have caught Sharks up to 8' on the 8000 and it is still a smooth running reel. The Baitrunner feature is perfect for letting a big Gar run with it for a bit.
Answer: Not small. I use it for Chesapeake Bay Stripers up to 39 pounds with no problem. I use 20 pound test and a medium heavy, fast action Loomis spinning rod.. never dealt with the 8000. So can’t help with that..
Answer: 4000 is ideal for red drum and trout, 8000 can be to small for a alligators
Answer: I don’t know if the 4000 is small or not but the 8000 will handle an 8’ bull shark and a 10’sawfish
Answer: A 5k or 6k would be a better choice for some larger drums, and the 8k should be enough for gars.
Answer: Can handle trout and reds no problem. Don't know anything about gars.
Q:
I have the old 3500 b for 20 years thinking of getting new reels question is is the 600d about the same size as the shimano 3500b if any one knos plea

Q:
what is the legnth where the reel fits on rod. 3"?
Answer: 2 and 5/8" not 3"
Q:
What reel would you use to live line eels in a river setting for striped bass up to 40lbs?
Answer: That’s funny I always go for the opposite the smallest equipment I can get the job done with because the battle is more intense most of my inshore Rods and reels are freshwater trout rod and reel’s I think it makes it more challenging
Answer: I would use the 12000
Answer: 8000D with 25-35# braid.
Answer: They would all work for that, but personally I always go for the biggest equipment that I can get.
Q:
Can i use it for saltwater offshore?
Answer: Yes, it’s made for saltwater. Even though it’s rated for saltwater I still rinse off the reel with fresh water after each use.
Answer: One of the best reels for offshore
Answer: Although I haven’t, I don’t see any reason why it would not work well offshore.
Answer: Yes you can use it offshore
Answer: Yes, but it depends on the size fish you're targeting.
Answer: Yes. It's a strong reel.
Answer: THAT IS WHAT I USE MINE FOR AND IT WORKS GREAT!!
Q:
Retrieval distance per rotatation?
Answer: About 37 inches a little over 3 feet.
Answer: I think it’s 35 inches. (But I’m not positive)
Q:
Would this pair well with this rod? https://smile.amazon.com/dp/b01hpyayqi/ref=nav_timeline_asin?_encoding=utf8&psc=1
Answer: Yes.
Q:
Is this good for lake fishing? Going for Bass 6lb. to 15lb. on average. Which reel? it's a gift.
Answer: Not the 4000. It is too big and heavy for the light / medium action rods used for bass fishing. Try a 2500 or 3000.
Answer: 4000
Q:
How much mono line can it hold for 25lb?
Answer: I can assist. Please specify the reel that you are purchasing? Is it for fresh water or salt water?

Q:
To clarify this ad says it is discontinued? is this true. also the ad says it is frt. drag? the shimano website says this product is front and rear.
Answer: The "baitrunner" drag is on the rear, the Fighting Drag is on the front, depending on the model.
Q:
Where is the reel made?
Answer: Headquartered in Sakai, Japan, the company has 32 consolidated subsidiaries and 11 unconsolidated subsidiaries. Shimano's primary manufacturing plants are in Kunshan, China; Malaysia; and Singapore. In 2017, Shimano had net sales of US $3.2 billion, 38% in Europe, 35% in Asia, and 11% in North America.

Answer: In Shimano Factorey in Malaysia
Answer: It is made in Malaysia.
Answer: Not sure where was made!
Q:
What is the difference between the 8000d eu and the 8000d?
Answer: The only difference is that the eu (European ) model has a T shaped handle instead of an egg shaped handle.
Q:
Does the 12000 model have automatic or manual bail trip.
Answer: automatic
Q:
How many yards of 200 lb. Spider Wire will this 8000D hold?
Answer: This reels holds 180 yards of 65lbs braid so I guess it might not hold 100 yards of 200lbs
Answer: I have never heard of anyone putting that size line on this reel. I have 300 yds of 40 on mine as a reference.
Answer: I have no clue, but the 8500 is the real deal! Thats why its more expensive then most
Answer: The manufacturer's chart only goes to 130#
Q:
Would 40# test be ok for reel 6000d
Answer: You could use 40# with power pro or another braid. Mono shouldn't go over 16 lb.
Q:
Which reel size is the equivalent to the old 1985 shimano baitrunner triton 3500d? is it the 4000d or the 6000d?
Answer: The 4000 is the closest in size to the old 3500. I would match the 4000 up with a medium to medium heavy 6'6" to 7'6" rod and 30# Power Pro. If your needs or rod is bigger, then go with the 6000.
Answer: 4000
Q:
What size should i go with for river fishing channel catfish and stripers? the 4000 or 6000? i also want to use it for bay fishing on my boat..
Answer: Go for the 6000, better line capacity for the larger fish. Capt. Jack
Answer: I have both/like the 4000 for stripers
Answer: The 6000 would be good choice with 12 to 14 pound test
Q:
what would be a good size reel for mahi mahi/cobia and jacks i want to pair with a 7ft ugly stic medium rod ?
Answer: Well the Baitrunner 4000 has been good for me for fish up to 25 pounds, no problem. I don't know the size of some of the ones you are tracking, but the 6000 is good for fish up to 150 pounds. Do you like a challenge? Get the 4000, rig it with 40 lb braid, put on an appropriate fluro leader and have at it. The 4000 is tough and very reliable.
Answer: I love 8000 for me this size is perfect for all kind of fish
Answer: I would use the 8000 I am using it with a 7' and 8' to land big fish
Q:
How much 30 pound fluorocarbon will this hold?
Answer: I have a 6000 and love it. I use mostly braid, however I use mono or fluorocarbon for about the last 20 feet on my reel. That way I feel I am getting the benefits of braid while getting the usability of mono. I tie my braid to mono at home and I am tying mono while on the boat to whatever rigs I am using. Hope this helps ; )
Answer: Harrison, I don't own a 4000. I have a 12000d, but I am quite sure that in fishing with a full spool of fluorocarbon you will never use all of it, so fill your spool to about 1/8 inch below the rim and enjoy your fishing. Good Luck.
Answer: No idea because I use braid. And I would highly recommend you do the same. Apart from an occasional wind knot, it just fishes a whole lot better. You get a far superior 'feel' from small bites. You can spool a whole lot more of it than you can with flourocarbon. And it is very strong with no memory, so if you are trolling you won't get the problems you get with line twisting and all that when you troll with a swivel.
Q:
Is there a noticable difference in size with the 6000d and4000d?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Yes - 6 oz heavier, 5 lbs more drag, etc. all depends on the species and size fish you are targeting.
Q:
Should i use mono or braided line with this reel
Answer: I use braided but mono is fine
Q:
Which size reel would i purchase for saltwater fishing? it would be used mostly off the beach catching snapper and blue fish.
Answer: I use the 12000 while surf fishing regardless of the species. 500 yards of line isn't over kill when you hook the catch of a lifetime.
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Brian, I don't know where you are fishing, but if it's for blues off the Carolina coast, the 12000D Shimano Baitrunner like I have on a 12 foot rod would handle just about anything.
Answer: The bait runner 4000 is all you need. Terrific saltwater reel that is durable and trouble free.
Answer: This Bait runner is an excellent choice for what you are looking to use fishing.
Answer: Recommend a 7 footer, but in a single piece. Bigger than that a two-piece makes sense.
Answer: I would go with the 8000D
Q:
The 12000 states it can hold 505 yards of 50lbs braided, is this correct? Spool is full and still have probably 50 yards of line left.
Answer: Yeah, but when Shimano says how many yards of a certain type one of their reels will hold, they are saying how much it held for them. Different line manufacturers have different thickness of line, and no two people or two machines will spool at the same tension. I am sure that Shimano spools at a greater tension than you can by hand, which means that they can spool more line than you can.
Q:
I get to fish salt water once a year - wondering if anyone has used this reel on a Muskie set up? I am looking at the 12000 and would like to use it f
Q:
Will the 4000 work for bay fishing, or is it too big?
Answer: the 4000 is the small reel for 10 lb. line,i went with the 8000D cause i'm fishing from a pier for grouper, if your fishing from a boat in the bay i would still buy the 8000D,25 lb# drag.its a very nice reel.click on arrow below the reel on amazon and pick the line weight you will using, don't under estimate a BIG FISH,BIG FISH BIG REEL hope this helps!
Answer: It will work just fine. Here on Cape Cod we had a spectacular late fall run of school stripers in the 14-20 inch range and the 4000 I use was just great with that size fish and a very light 7 foot rod. I also caught stripers in season this year in the 30-35" range (up to 20 pounds) with the same reel, rigged with braided line. You can easily adjust the drag on the fly for bigger fish.
Answer: I would say they are small for bay fishing. But it depends on what you are fishing for but they are built well they can handle a decent size game fish.
Answer: I would say they are small for bay fishing. But it depends on what you are fishing for but they are built well they can handle a decent size game fish.
Answer: Not too big at all. Use it regularly for Chesapeake Bay stripper fishing. Great for 18" to 35" fish.
Answer: Depends on the type and size of fish you are targeting. You could probably get away with a smaller reel, but it's one of my favorite reels
Answer: It would be perfect with braided line.
Answer: Not Shure but I think so
Answer: Not Shure but I think so
Q:
What size reel would work with a 9+ foot rod?
Answer: Any of them would work on a nine + foot rod. My opinion though is always go bigger than you think, reels are never going to be too big.
Answer: I would go with the 8000, or 12000 if you are targeting larger fish.
Answer: Depends on the type of fishing you are into surfcasting? Maybe a 12000
Q:
Why only 3BB for such a pricey reel?
Answer: The reel only needs 3 bearing sets to work properly. They are good quality reels that require very little maintenance.
Answer: This is typical shimano. But I can tell you it doesn't feel like three it is smoother than my okuma Coronado that has six bearings so don't worry it's the best baitrunner
Q:
best size rod for fresh water fishing
Answer: 6-6.5 medium I prefer the ugly stick makes a sweet combo
Q:
Does the 4000 model come with the rounded handle or the more flat T-handle?
Answer: My 6000 I just purchased had round handle
Answer: IT HAS A OVAL SHAPED ROUND HANDLE, IT IS A VERY SMOOTH REEL AND THE HANDLE IS COMFORTABLE, HOPE THIS HELPS.
Answer: Round
Q:
Is it waterproof
Answer: Not sure what you mean. But it won’t melt in the rain. It’s not meant to be submerged in l water, especially salt water. Fully sealed reels are more expensive. If you properly care for this reel it should last a lifetime.if you intend to abuse it then buy cheaper brands and replace as needed.
Answer: No
Q:
what is the difference between the 16lb and 17lb reel?
Answer: Of Drag or fishing line?
Q:
Would the baitrunner 4000d pair well with a st. croix avid series spinning rod, avs66lf2. i've posted here before. saltwater fishing for snappers/blue
Answer: Amazon's mistake: I purchased a 12000d, not the 4000. BUT, if you are surf fishing for those snapper and blues, I recommend a medium action rod of length, to cast the distance you will be wanting. I don't know anything about the rod you are calling out. Sorry. I have my 12000 mounted on a 12 foot rod.
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Additional Answer: You certainly do not need to purchase that expensive a rod to effectively fish that 4000 reel. Good luck.
Answer: I would suggest a med to med-heavy rod. You don't want a light rod for that size reel and the species listed.
Q:
What size reel should I buy for a 12 ft ugly stick
Answer: Depends what you are fishing for and what your budget is.
Answer: 8000 is perfect.
Q:
what kind of rod to use on a 1200?
Answer: I use my reel for mostly jetty and surf fishing paired with a 9' rod with 15 pound braid. I think it would also work very well with a boat rod.
Answer: I would use a medium to heavy spinning rod.
Q:
Is this a manual bail?
Answer: It has an auto-return bail, manual open to cast.
Answer: IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY CLOSE.
Q:
What is country of origin/manufacture ?
Answer: I believe it is malaysia but it very well engineered and easy to maintain so is made under shimanos strict guidance.
Answer: Malaysia
Q:
is the 6000d same size as the old Shimano 3500 bs
Answer: Sorry I not know. The 6000 and 8000 are the same size other than the spool, which is deeper on the 8000. But I am not familiar with the 12000. What are you fishing for? The 8000 will land pretty much anything up to 80 lbs or so, perhaps even bigger. In any case, they are very reliable reels and Shimano is a terrific company. I own four of them and recently one of them spent two days submersed in cold water. Without as much as asking for a receipt, Shimano took the reel apart (a 4000), totally rebuilt it, and charged me NOTHING! It was totally my error too.
Answer: I DON'T KNOW BUT IT IS A VERY GOOD REEL
Q:
Has anyone here handled a 6000 and 8000 side by side? How much bigger is an 8000 over the 6000? Is it a noticable difference?
Answer: Yes, a very noticeable difference in size and weight. I would compare it 6000 to 10000 in most other reels. I love both!
Q:
Do you ship to Australia
Q:
What is the difference between the d and the oc
Answer: The Baitrunner OC is the base model Baitrunner reel and the Baitrunner D has all the upgrades that you would associate with a higher priced reel. The two reels will function in pretty much the same way, but one will give you a better fishing experience.
Q:
What's the difference between the OC and D models?
Answer: Better handle, more advanced gearing/design and smoother operation. I have had Baitrunners since the 1990s and have always loved them, but the newer ones are the best!
Q:
Maybe I missed it somewhere on here, but how many feet of line are retrieved per rotation?
Answer: 37 inches , so just over 3 feet per rotation.
Product reviews of Shimano Baitrunner D Spinning Reel (4.8:1)
AA : Like these reels so much I got 4
great quality and functionality, bulletproof build, no goofy frills or ugly colors. No complaints about these reels at all after many hours of fishing. Paired the 8000D with 10ft 2.75lb Nash Scope rods (from the UK), 30lb test Power Pro Super 8 Slick braid, and 3oz weights. Casting over 60 yards no problem, and even smaller fish are fun to catch.
Ben : Too heavy and baitfeeder switch is too big and sharp
It works well and it cast smoothly, but I don't like the weight of it and the baitrunner switch design. This thing is heavy in comparison to okuma. It's too heavy to be used holding it while surf fishing, I fatigued much faster with this reel than my lighter Okuma avengers baitrunner 55 series. People say it's heavy because of the built quality, but it's not practical for surf fishing with the rod in your hands for a long time, it's just too heavy. I also didn't like how big and sharp the baitfeed switch is designed, it doesn't leave a lot of clearance between your fingers and the switch. It digs and poked into my grip fingers while reeling in heavy fish, but I guess it's ok if you have small hands. I switched back to my Okuma and I am more happy with my okuma. The Okuma design is much more practical for how I surf fish, it's lighter and more comfortable to use. To me the Shimano baitfeeder performance is not that huge of a difference compared to Okuma avenger baitfeeder. I prefer my reel to be lighter in weight and not have the baitfeeder switch digging and poking into your grip fingers while reeling. In the end, I chose comfort in the okuma avengers baitfeeder over a slightly better casting reel in the Shimano baitfeeder 6000D. The okuma cost way less than the Shimano as well. I really wanted to like this reel because it's Shimano brand and it was expensive, but it just didn't work for me. I wish I can return my Shimano for a refund but the return window has come and gone.
David & Karol : Five Stars
Love the reel, no complaints.
Slots Not Thots : Run small
Shimano bait runners run small and dont hold much line compared to pretty much any other reel. Other than that they perform well. You need to upsize for sure. If u want a typical 6000 size reel go with the 8000. If u want 8000 go with 10000 TRUST ME!
opinions are like A_ _ holes : bad a$$ reel
the name shimano says it all. you get what you pay for. i have at least 8 of these reels in all diffrent sizes. i have never had an issue with any of them and they have seen more saltwater than fresh. way to go shimano

Rick Lincicome : Good for Rock Fish on the Chesapeake Bay
Great Reel. Stands up to my other Shimano sustain reels very well. Need to focus on getting tension right, but perfect for stripper fishing on the Bay.
carl s. : Excellent reel.
I have 3 of these and will order another one. Excellent reel.
Josh S : Crazy Smooth
This is the nicest reel I've ever purchased and fully expect it to last for years to come. Reel showed up packaged well and upon taking it out of the box it reels like butter. Can't wait to put it to work out in the surf. Follow up review once I land some fish.
John : Durable, smooth and functional. Best I have ever owned
Shimano makes two models of the Baitrunner, the Oc which is the basic function reel and the D which has a few more features.
I have used Shimano Baitrunner reels for years. It's so good someone stole it out of my garage, so I had to get another one.
Kindle Customer : Baitrunner is a Great Feature
It has flawlessly handled 30 lb monsters. The drag and Baitrunner works great. I am so glad I bought the Baitrunner feature and highly recommend it!
R. Wolff : Prefer this Baitrunner over my Spinfisher V 4500LL
I love this reel now having used it for a Summer of fishing in Florida. I can compare the 'baitrunner' features between this 4000 Baitrunner and a Penn 4500 Spinfisher V Liveliner which I also fish with. When doing some live bait free-line fishing, I much prefer the Shimano Baitrunner due to the better and lower drag control you can get using the Baitrunner/Liveliner feature of this Rod over the Spinfisher V. The drag on the Penn Spinfisher Livelinner drag, just doesn't go quite low enough for me sometimes. Maybe this can be modified by changing parts, but the lowest out of the box liveliner drag setting still can take some effort to pull the line out. With the Shimano Baitrunner, the drag can be almost set down to a slight finger pull of the line. This cannot be done with the Spinfisher 4500LL Liveliner drag setting. (Please note this review only discusses the Baitrunner/LiveLiner drag settings of each reel)
Puck : It fit my rod, and hands just fine.
It fit my rod, and hands just fine. Loaded up with 30# braid, I plan to use it in the Texas bays. How it holds up to the saltwater will be the true test.
Miguel Angel De Los Reyes : Love at first bite
Love my new reel. I got the 12000D. I’ve taken it out surf fishing twice and reeled in some big croakers with ease. Highly recommend it. I also have the 12000OC and I like the bigger handle. Baitrunner feature is great, leave the line open and listen for the bite.
natanael : Cuesta lo que vale
Me encanta bien Comodo y buen material.
Eric : Great reel
Love these reels. Have them on all our offshore spinning setups. Casts well when running a jig and allows live bait to run. Easy to setup and use. Been running them for several years now and just added two more to the collection.
Kindle Customer : Just an excellent reel.
Love using this when chumming up snapper on the reefs at night. Using the free runner feature gives such an adrenaline rush.

Trevor Duran : Best out there
It's hard to compare Shimano Bait Runners with anything else. Although the okuma bait feeders are cheaper and work well, the quality is lacking like crazy. Shimano is eons above pretty much every other bait runner reels out there. You absolutely get what you pay for with these reels. They are well worth the extra money. My dad and I still have the older Shimano 6500 reels and work great. Keep in mind they are 20+ years old and have been abused. These newer ones are tanks and very very smooth. They are very durable and we have been using them for a long time. The only thing I wish was the clicker was a little louder. That being said, they have the loudest clickers of any spinning reel. Louder than all of the okumas and penns by a fair amount. I can't really complain about anything with these reels.
It was all a dream : Five Stars
Killer reels, they've changed my bait fishing game.
BK Broiler : Great reel for the price!
This reel is very smooth and works very well and paired with a 12 foot rod and good for striper or any fish in that class and the bait runner function enables you to let the fis run with the bait before it knows it’s hooked!
Bill Murphy : More line further cast
Very nice for the price works great
bill roder : Damaged box and damaged reel.
Shimano reel came in tore up box and the reel shaft was bent, And the return shipping label is invalid according to UPS. I have to pay for shipping costs...this seller is untrustworthy at best.
Geoffrey D. Mikota : Best Reel Ever!!!!!
Can't ask for a better reel! If I ever need another spinning reel I will only buy Shimano Baitrunners. Just quality!
HUGOBOSSRUFF : It’s a Shimano nothing else compares
Casts far baitrunner feature is amazing holds drag no problem, it’s shimano I mean come on it’s worth every penny
Peter H. : good long casting
Reels build well, enjoy the secondary drag feature. Easy to walk back when surf fishing, just flip the secondary drag down and walk back in, line will stay tight but won't pull out your weight if bottom fishing. I over filled trying to fit 505 yards of 50lbs braided since it said the reel would fit it all. From my experience was only able to get about 450 yards. Bet if you had your shop spool the reel 505 yards of 50lbs braid would fit.
Casting - Mines on a 10ft Tsunami Trophy Series surf rod, really liked how stiff that one is and really throws the weight out. Sturdy rod/reel combo.
Drag could be higher than 20 for bigger catches but sure it will do fine when one hops on. Sturdy reel.
Kindle Customer : Just an excellent reel.
Love using this when chumming up snapper on the reefs at night. Using the free runner feature gives such an adrenaline rush.
Jedi Firefighter : ... 2 of these and they are 2 of my best reels. I use them all the time for ...
I own 2 of these and they are 2 of my best reels. I use them all the time for just about anything. I do most of my fishing off the beach and these handle snapper, snook, jack, sharks and a variety of other beach and pier fish. It's so nice being able to set your rod down and walk away without having to worry. The clicker is very loud and you'll have no problem hearing it. I've gotten a couple of my friends to switch to this as well, and they all love it.

Darren L. : Reel size is almost the same as the 8000 model.
Was under the impression that the entire base of the reel would be smaller, but it’s not. It’s the same size as the 8000 model, except for the line capacity. Wish the entire reel was smaller and lighter. If I would have know the reel was the same size as the 8000 I wouldn’t have bought this one.

Great reel so far, I purchased the 12000 series which is equivalent to a regular 8000 Penn. So far durable, and smooth.

Have owned a number of Penn reels which have done a good job, but this reel is something special. For the first time, I have not had any problems with braid.
