I live in Farmingdale and I fish the Manasquan Reservoir, Assunpink, Thompson Park Lake, Topamemus Lake. Manasquan is one of the best lakes in the state and it's right around the corner frome me.

Im a NJ guy  :). But I fish all local stuff, small ponds/rivers, in and around Union County. Don't go out to the big lakes too often, but occasionally I'll go with my friend (since he has a boat), and check out Hopatcong, Spruce Run, Monksville Reservoir etc. To tell you the truth I prefer my small local stuff, frankly I catch more fish at them  :-?.

fishing user avatarJerseyBassin reply :

yea man likewise, im from morris though..ive been to spruce run and monksville a couple times. haven't had much luck at either lake. then ill go to a couple smaller local lakes which are each under 5 minutes away from my house and ill catch more fish suddenly. im not a fishing pro so i can't say for sure, but it might be because these local hot spots are under fished

has anybody caught fish at spruce run or monksville? i hear monksville produces some pretty fine musky  :( havent caught one though :)

fishing user avatarCujo reply :

I've electro-fished Assunpink and Mountain Lake.  Got some big bass out of Assunpink and big Musky out of Mountain Lake.   :)

Hey all, I'm new here, this is my first post. I live in No. Jersey and have fished the Newark Watershed resevoirs for 20 years. Jersey takes a lot of knocks, but since the Highlands Act came into being, and much of the land in No Jersey is now protected, there are some wonderful fishing opportunities out there. I run the gamut,Trout, Smallies, Largemouth and Musky and there are world class fish out there if you know where to look!

Sorry JerseyBassin... Didn't see your question till now.  I always seem to do real well at Spruce Run.  That's why it's one of my top two favorite lakes.  If you want some info, please PM me.

FishGuitBeer... WELCOME!

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

Welcome to the Bass Resource forums :)

Before Spruce Run was inundated, I used to hunt small game there when it was known as the Clinton Public Shooting Grounds.

When it was first opened to the public for fishing, little bass could be caught everywhere from the shore of Spruce Run.

A few years later, bass weren't everywhere but their average weight was much improved.

I guess I'm a poor reference because I haven't fished Spruce Run since 1992, but at that time,

we did best in the headwaters toward Willoughby Brook in the upper third of the reservoir.

(don't forget Cranberry Lake, it's loaded with bass & pickerel).

fishing user avatarJKay reply :

I'm up in the northern part of Morris County.  I fish some of the local reservoirs.  Split Rock is one of my favorites.  Great smallie action.  I usually fish that with a buddy in a tandem kayak.  The boat ramp there is a pain, but not bad for a lightweight boat.

I mainly fish a private lake up here and that's where I keep my boat.  The LM fishing is pretty good and I have a handle on some of the hot spots.  I made the mistake of telling my buddy's 13 year old kid about one of these spots.  Next time out there were a pile of kids trying to get fish out of this area.  Sweet revenge was that they were all throwing the wrong things.  I don't think much was caught from that spot.

fishing user avatarJD13 reply :

Hey, just joined, from Morris County I've been fishing mostly small lakes near Rockaway for my entire life. Mostly on White Meadow, almost all of my big fish have come from this tiny lake. I avoid Hopatcong and other big local lakes they bother me, I hate to say it but I really prefer NY state lakes (George and Sacandaga) to popular NJ lakes.

fishing user avatarDancesWithSquirrels reply :

New guy here and a Jersey guy.  Been mostly chasing the put and take trout for a long time now.  This year I am trying to get out more for the bass.  I'm in Somerset County so I am pretty centrally located for getting to several of the popular bigger lakes.  But I want to identify some of the smaller local waters.  I prefer quiet water fishing, small lakes and ponds that I can use a small kayak or canoe or even fish from the shore.  I don't have any kind of a serious boat and don't expect to have one anytime soon.

DWS

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Hey did you ever cross the state line onto THE SEVEN LAKES PARKWAY, into HARRIMAN STATE PARK in NY, Lot of good spots like you desribe , and you can access them right from the road.

fishing user avatarDancesWithSquirrels reply :

I don't get that far north very often.  And as close as New York is I have only fished in the state once, for trout, on the Beaverkill.  That is kind of a trout pilgrimage of sorts.

I will have to check out the area you are talking about.

fishing user avatarshimanogloomis man reply :

i live in bergen county a little secret split rock res is njs best kept secret... every time i go there on a weekend and weather is perfect in the summer i havent seen more the 5 boats out there.. great large mouth and smallie action ;D.. only thing is electic motor only and like said before u need to bring a light boat to carry a good 30 ft to the water threw the woods :)

fishing user avatarDancesWithSquirrels reply :

Sounds like the ideal place for my little kayak.  I love those quiet waters.

DWS

fishing user avatarFishGuitBeer reply :

Yeah, no trailers at SplitRock. My son and I caught 12 largemouths at a tiny pond 2 blocks from our house. We hit three other spots earlier in the day, but the water was clear and cold. The murky little pond by our house might have been 3 degree's warmer and that's all it took!

fishing user avatarJerryC reply :

I live in the Wayne area. I mainly go to the smaller lakes and ponds not known to many, but occationally i will go to some of these lakes.. excuse my spellings on some.

Wawayonda State Park (great pickerel fishing)

Sheapard Lake

Split Rock

Pompton River

Passaic River (some areas)

Greenwood lake

Pointview Reseriour

Split rock is one of my favs because not many people know of its location and rarely do you see someone else out there on a boat (no dock, only carry in boats only).

Happy you mentioned the Ramapo Lake.

I went there for my first time ever this past saturday with 3 buddies of mine. The lake is crystal clear, you can see atleast 10 feet right to the bottom. Caught 3 pickerel & a friend caught a small bass. The place is great for day fishing. Just remember to bring pleanty of water and food, the walk back to the car was horrific.. You need to walk about a mile in to the trails to get to the lake.. Overall, i will definatly be back very soon!!!

Hi Guys

new to the site! Born raised and fished NJ for a few years. (Many few Years ;D)

Live in Union County but fish many parts of the state and into NY and PA.

Heading out to the Watchung Reservation in about 20 minutes.

Nice to meet you guys, if ya want to hook up and shore fish (boat stolen >:) ) just PM me.

Hey Sharkbite: I fish the Delaware near Pburg. Mostly the boat ramp in Easton. Always in that area coming or going. Love merril creek and furnace lake. Ever Been?

fishing user avatarRangerDad reply :

Thank You Zel,

I just fished a couple small lakes in your area last week. Just off  611, going to try and get back that way on Thursday.

If your free and want to join me just yell

fishing user avatarDancesWithSquirrels reply :

RangerDad,

Where do you fish on the Watchung Reservation?  What seems to work best there?

DWS

fishing user avatarFishGuitBeer reply :

As an ex-Bergen Co. guy, my early season shore fishing 1-2 punch were, Ramapo Reservation: the lower lake gives up a lotta bass to rubber worms. Darlington Co Park: Loaded with big bass, as it gets hotter, it gets covered in a veg mat, but floating worms and Sluggo's worked on top of the mat, bring explosive suprises  :)

fishing user avatarJerryC reply :

FGB, Where is Darlington Co. Park?

fishing user avatarFishGuitBeer reply :

Darlington Ave, Ramsey :)

fishing user avatarbknj reply :

hi all!!  with the great weather past 2 days have been giving some local ponds a bit of a workout.tried black brook pond on saturday and did well with a buddy--6 nice bass between 1 and 2 1/2 lbs on razor worms and this afternoon hit lenape pond--wow!!!!! 19 bass up to 3 lbs on spinnerbaits and baby bass color rattletraps---saw lots of bass cruising in and out of shallows--possible they are starting to warm up to spawning as this lake is very shallow

tight lines to all

fishing user avatarJerryC reply :

Nice BK!

I will be hitting up Waywayonda State Park this Sunday with a few friends.. planning an all day trip there.. i will let you guys know how it turns out!

fishing user avatarRangerDad reply :

Hey DWS,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Some times life happens  :)

I fish Surprise Lake and Sealys Pond in the Watchung Reservation. When I feel like walking I'll fish the creek/river that connects the two lakes.

What ever you throw, will connect at one time or another. I like to throw top waters. The water in SL is shallow so they work well. At SP the water is deeper, I'll throw a T Rig worm or a Carolina Worm.

Make sure you bring some weedless stuff, the weeds get thick!

I'll start near the parking area, and work my way down to the d**n. Coming around the lake anding back at the car. Bring some boots, the edges of SL are muddy. Can't get to far side of SPond unless hip boots, or a long walk, or up a mountain.

Leave the car topper home unless you get a permit from Union County, you will get a ticket without it!!!

Hope this helps. If any one needs more info, PM me

fishing user avatarbknj reply :

to ranger dad---if you have a car top you can try lenape pond---i have put a canoe and an inflatable in there with no problems--is a bit of a haul from the car to the water but there are some very nice bass in that pond ---my friend and i have been transplanting fish in there for many years--they are very healthy and verrrry hungry right now--also--if you like to fish for carp it is amazing in there--average size is 8-10 lbs with a few up to 20---on light tackle they are a ball

fishing user avatarRangerDad reply :

Bknj

I have heard of lenape pond but not sure where it is. I think I might know it by another name. Would you mind giving me some directions? Feel free to PM me. This is killing me, I know I've heard of it, but can't place it! :-/

I want to say it is in Plainfield or North Plainfield, just not sure.

fishing user avatarRangerDad reply :

Hey BKNJ

Is that park over near Westfield and Cranford where the Shotgun Skeet range was?

I grew up in Rahway right on the river and fished it all my life. We would wade upstream from my house and end up by the parkway behind Winfield park. Some times we would head for Mohegan Park. The only Black Brook I know is near Rt 22.

It sounds like we are close to each other, if you want to hook up one day and go fishing let me know.

fishing user avatarDancesWithSquirrels reply :

Thanks for the info RangerDad.  I live in North Plainfield and never really thought about the reservation for bass.  Funny how you never think to try the places right near by.

hey bipr8,

if i lived more near you i would deff be down for some fishing.. i also have a boat, but unfortunatly my 1989 toyota carolla doesnt have the power to tow it anymore lol..

question for everyone,

has anyone fishing round valley reseviour this season? my gf lives 20 misn from there so we are going to hit that up on sunday, weather permitted.. thanks!

fishing user avatarZel... reply :

JerryC: I haven't fished Round Valley yet this year, but in prior years, at this time in spring, I would recommend hitting the stretch marked in yellow and green on the attached map with: rapalas, soft jerkbaits, tubes and 4 straight worms (on a jig head or T-rigged) along the banks. Pay special attention to any areas with structure (rocks, submerged wood, brush), and any points. The area I marked in yellow can easily be fished from the bank. Side note: As you leave the boat launch, not far to your right, in the deeper water you will see the end of an inlet pipe (water is very clear so you can easily see all the way down) with a dark bottom all around it. Be sure to fish it I've caught several 5lb+ fish from that spot (right where the yellow starts, nearest to the launch, on my map). Good luck.

I live in the corner of Morris Co.,where morris, sussex, and passaic meet. Got 5 out of there last night in about 20 minutes, no monsters, but bass none the less.

Hey all, newbie here....Yep from Jersey (Union County). I've been a saltwater guy for last 10 years, fluke and stripers mostly...

The expense of the fishing boat and gas as well as the family obligations and other interests (golf) have recently cut down on my primary fishing routines...

I've been in my house for a 11 years with the golf course and park 5 minutes away...Saw some kids with fishing rods walking down the street last year and asked where they where fishin...they said the local pond. I'd been there and never thought much about it...asked what they were fishin for and they said "bass".  I was in disbelief, but they said there were plenty of bass in the pond....

On an off day a week ago I decided to take the dog and a rod down to the park and toss a few in...caught a tiny blue gill and then 6 small bass!  I mean pretty small...maybe 10 inches tops, with  most smaller...but d**n I was impressed..I relaxed, enjoyed the day and got some action..and then...got the bug....

I hadn't been freshwater fishing 5 times in the last 30 years...I had some gear but was cluless as to what rigs etc...I should use...I went with worms and bought some Berkley gulp nightcrawlers...been back 3 of the last four days as it's a five minute walk from the house...the dog loves it, and I've been catching fish each day and enjoying myself. Figure there has to be some bigger fish in there and have been practicing very rusty technic not expecting much...and enjoying the hell out of it...I'll be back tomorrow for an hour or so, funny how time flies....

ahhh...I wonder if it's where i go..is it on kenilworth blvd.? I go to a place on kenilworth blvd. right when you go over the bridge going towards the college in cranford. Right after the bridge theres a driveway on the right. I fish the water thats under the bridge and there are some monster carp in that water. The thing is that they are real tricky. I have had no luck catching a big one yet while you're fishing they make huge splashes in the water kinda like taunting you. I have gotten some nice trout there though along with some sucker fish, bass, catfish, eels..... If this is not the park how do I get to the one where you fish because i've only caught a bass a couple times here. I mostly go there to fight with the trout and monster carps ranging around 12-26lbs.

fishing user avatarnjbassfreak reply :

forget it i just found it on a map. It's not where I usually go but it looks like its worth a shot. I'll stop by soon. Thanks man, I never even knew that pond was there. lol

Yeah you were at Lenepe Park by the shooting range...

You can access Blackbrook from 14th or 15th street (Traffic light at the school) travel doen about a mile and they'll be a snall parking lot on the right...you'll probably miss it the first time....

Caught 3  small ones early this evening....
