Central PA. Lake Updates 2024

fishing user avatarbassfisherjk reply :

I was talking to a couple of guys I work with today about area lakes. One said that Raystown was closed last week due to high water. He stated that the water at Aitch launch was up to the bathrooms in the upper end of the parking lot.Anther co-worker said he was up at Glendale yesterday afternoon, and didn't see any open water. I haven't made it over to Canoe Creek lately so I can't comment on it. Anyone having any other updates feel free to add them.

fishing user avatarNateFollmer reply :

Are the few launch points at Raystown still closed due to the vandalism? I think it was Aitch, Shy Beaver and James Creek that got hit and they said in the paper that they aren't opening them until they find the people who did it?

Anyway that's not the point of this thread :D I checked out Walker and Faylor the other day... Looks like the ice is gone, but I'm sure they are blown out and muddy right now. Haven't had a chance to check Colyer, but it was still solid last I saw.

fishing user avatarmikesjet reply :

Aitch, James Creek and shy beaver will be open again soon.  They did find the person that did it.  I will give a better update as I am heading there tomorrow morning with a buddy to check out the lake.  Gauges are showing it is back to normal pool.

fishing user avatarHot Rod reply :

At Glendale about 60% of the ice remains.  That was at 8 a.m. today.  It is melting faster now though  :D

fishing user avatarSPEEDBEAD. reply :

Local ponds are ice free down here in South Central.

Haven't checked any of the local electric only lakes, but I'm sure they are ice free as well.

Someone hit me up with a date to fish Canoe Creek.  Im sure my parents would like to see me and I always wanted to throw the big trout lures up there for bass and musky.

fishing user avatarbassfisherjk reply :

Hey Speedbead, you let me know what day is good for you and I will meet you over at Canoe Creek as long as I'm not working.Canoe Creek is my favorite lake, there are some monster bass over there.

fishing user avatarcentral.PA.bass reply :

how far is canoe creek from the exit for it on 99?

fishing user avatarRangerphil reply :

No ice down here in south western PA! Dunlap is coming up since the drawdown and the yough lake is open but water is high all the way up over jockey hollow parking lot!

You won't see me up there until at least two weeks after the trout opener.

I've seen that lake get turned into a froth by all the Powerbait dunkers.   ;D

You ought to see some of the muskies in that place too. 36"+, no problem.

fishing user avatarbasser89 reply :

Come on SPEED! a 36" musky isn't even legal size in PA!  :D  Wait til they get in the mid 40 inch range!  ;D  They're the fun ones! And yes, I know, ya want to come down and fish with me for them. Give me some time to find them again. With the high waters we got so far, I have to figure out how it's affected the spots I've fished in the past or whether I need to find some new places.

Haven't got my PA license yet but will be getting it at some point here! What's the scoop on Sayers? Have seen anyone mention it yet.

Sean, 36+ is a HUGE musky for a lake that when I was growing up the PA DCNR and PFBC insisted that there were NONE in the lake.  You should see the size of the walleyes in that place where there are NONE.  ;D

I was night fishing there once, drowning worms for catfish with one of my buddies from back home.  Guy throwing a jitterbug about 30 yds away gets freakin' BLOWN UP and lands one over 40". The park ranger had a tough time explaining that one away.   ;D

Nice. Yeah, I would've loved to hear the ranger stumble through that conversation! LOL! You know my opinion of lake muskies though.  ;)

fishing user avatarbassfisherjk reply :

Central PA. Bass,Canoe Creek is approx. 7-10 miles from 99 exit. Not quite sure on going that way.I usually go to Water Street and go up 22.I do know there are 2 ways to get to the lake once you get on Route 22.The 1st one takes you back a winding road, more scenic but slower.I would stay on Route 22 till you see the big State Park sign(can't miss it).

fishing user avatarbassfisherjk reply :

Sorry for the 2nd post guys. When I said about 2 ways to get into Canoe Creek,I meant after you get off 99.LOL forgot to add it to my 1st post.(old age) :D

fishing user avatarSPEEDBEAD. reply :

I come down 22 from Dville, through Hollidaysburg and Geeseytown.

Do you use the launch by the dam or the back side by the stump field?

I might have to bring my bow too.  There are some big ol' carp in that place.   :D

fishing user avatarbassfisherjk reply :

I always use the launch by the dam.The other one gets weedy real quick and makes it tough to get in and out.

fishing user avatarpaangler3117 reply :

I stopped by shy beaver this weekend, water was almost 50 way back in the towards the creek , but was only about 44 off the end of the dock. Water was pretty dirty. Guys I talked to said the water was about the same on the main lake too.

A guy caught a 50 inch muskie out of Canoe creek last year. He was reeling in a trout and bam! It was in the paper, I think it was on the first day!

Jim

fishing user avatarSPEEDBEAD. reply :

Hmmm, reeling in a trout and a bigger fish came up and ate it.

That doesnt sound like anything I might like to try.  Swimbaits don't work in PA. Nope.   :D   ;D

fishing user avatarfishincop640 reply :

How did the tourney go at Sayer's?  Im sure the water temp was back down in the 40s.

fishing user avatarcentral.PA.bass reply :

No clue why but last week when i was at Sayers it was 3 ft over summer pool.. for some reason over the last week they dropped the water levels by at least 15ft and it was down to winter pool again..  that killed the bite...

8 guys showed up for the tourney and no one even got a nibble!!  Needless to say we all finished first and last and received our money back haha!

fishing user avatarbassfisherjk reply :

It is strange that they dropped Sayers that low at this time of year.Sorry you guys didn't get any fish. What was the water temp? (if you don't mind me asking).Fishincop was going to Raystown this afternoon maybe he made out better.

Hey Central PA. Bass do you know if Black Moshannon is ice free yet?

fishing user avatarcentral.PA.bass reply :

started out at 38..  got up to 41-42 around 1:30 when I was leaving...  Last weekend temps were ~43..

And not sure.. I haven't been around there for 2 weeks...  I am guessing it is though.. I will text a friend and ask..

A guy here at work was there last Tues. and showed me photos of the lake. I thought it was odd that you guys were having a tourney with the levels that low, but I thought maybe they'd close the spillway and let it fill up... Guess they didn't!

I'm wondering about Black Mo myself... I might make that the first lake I hit this season.

Even if you throwdown with some big old Muskie lures? That's a bummer :D

fishing user avatarbassfisherjk reply :

Hi Nate,ya they had it posted at the one launch.I don't usually get over their to fish till end of April so I'm not 100%sure.I will try to find out.The sign didn't have a breakdown of different fish it just said no fishing till 1st day of trout.

fishing user avatarcentral.PA.bass reply :

I am guessing that the message is for trout only.. You wouldnt think they could shut the whole lake down do you?

fishing user avatarbassfisherjk reply :

Hey guys I just talked to a former Warden that I know and he said that Canoe Creek is closed to all fishing till trout opener. He also stated that Bald Eagle Creek is the same. You couldn't fish for suckers or something like that either.

fishing user avatarfishincop640 reply :

Due to having to work late Sunday afternoon we didn't make it down to Raystown.  I did get my new trolling motor though.  Got a 2010 Minn Kota Maxxum 80lb thrust trolling motor for $500.  Guy I got it from just got out of fishing the Stren Series Tournaments and this was his back up TM.....Not a single scratch on the thing!!  Hoping to make it down to Raystown sometime this week.  Will post report!

sweet...  FYI.. there is a Fishers of Men tourney at Raystown this weekend..

fishing user avatarfishincop640 reply :

What does it take to get into those fisher's of men tournaments?  Im also hoping to join the Tyrone Bassmasters.  Anyone member there?

fishing user avatarcentral.PA.bass reply :

A membership to FOM.. and attend the meeting and registration the night before the tourneys.  and a 160 dollar entree fee per team

fishing user avatarfkiller31 reply :

New here and glad I joined up. Sayers drives me nuts. I crappie fish it with the family just for the quantity and fun to catch and release.  In the summer nights we bowfish the lake at with lights and see some huge bass and some real nice muskies. However, that lake kicks my butt every time I fish for bass. Beautiful lake with such potential and so frustrating. Any pointers?   :'(

fishing user avatarNateFollmer reply :

Never knew there were Muskies in Sayers.... I may have to try harder for them next time :)

That lake is tough sometimes, there's really no way around it :) Just throw everything you got until you find what works. I've had techniques work there that shouldn't for that time of year, so just stick with it.

fishing user avatarcentral.PA.bass reply :

I like sayers but it is a tough lake to fish.. I like fishing weeds in the summertime along with the man made structure.. Buddy of mine caught a huge musky last summer on a 1 dollar walmart spinnerbait..

fishing user avatarBilly Mayes reply :

How are things going this week? Kinda trying to get used to the new forum! Anyway. I have an invitation to fish the clarion river and also deep creek maryland this year.....any suggestions? Deep creek is in may and july in clarion

There are some nice smallies in the clarion.

fishing user avatarcentral.PA.bass reply :

anyone having any luck yet around the area?!

fishing user avatarNateFollmer reply :

I haven't been on a bass adventure yet... Trout fishing has been good though. Caught a few browns over the weekend. I'm going to try and get the NuCanoe out this weekend and hit Walker or Faylor.

fishing user avatarcentral.PA.bass reply :

I am thinkin about going to a pond tonight up here in slippery rock at one of the state gamelands.. hoping to at least catch a couple dinks.. I have been out 3x this year without a bite.. kinda depressing..

fishing user avatarNateFollmer reply :

Not the way to start a season! The river is finally at a decent level, may try and hit some smallies after work. Good luck!

fishing user avatarTom Kistler reply :

Has anybody been to Colyer Lake this spring? I live in State College and go to Penn State so this is the closest lake for me. I was there a few times last summer but not yet this spring. I mostly fish from the shore because I don't have my boat at school. Does anybody have any tips for shore fishing at Colyer?

Colyer is a TOUGH fish from shore. I fish that lake a lot, so I know it fairly well. How adventurous do you feel? There's a path (sort of) on either side of the lake that ends at the main point on the lake. That point is where most of the action is. You can catch a ton of bass on a jig skipped down the point. Another good spot is behind the point - there's a little cut out with some timber in it, great spot for flippin'.

Don't feel like walking that far - then try fishing where the creek enters the lake (this is on the side with the crappy boat launch, not the nice one). Ton's of pickerel in that area too, they can be fun. From the creek mouth all the way out about 3/4 of the way to the point is one huge grass flat. There's some massive fish in there, but they are hard to find with such a large area to cover. You can also try fishing around the dam, but that's hit or miss too. Crappie hang out around there mostly.

This girl came out of the grass flats, I was heading to the point and this guy started yelling for me to take his photo LOL:

965482_orig.jpg?376

and here is the same guy in the early 90's with a nice one from Colyer... Kinda pointless to share, but I think the photo is hilariously nostalgic :) I still talk to that guy from time to time, he fishes that lake almost everyday (his name is Andy, he uses a green canoe with a TM).

Tough is VERY true. I try bass fishing Sayers a few times early season and usually get disgusted. Tend to take the kid there for some crappy fishing throughout the summer just to catch a bunch of small fish for release. Usually if a crappy hits the 9 inch minimum it's gone. Won't get into the illegal crappy taken by the foreigners who think everything is legal and should be kept. I digress. I bowfish for carp here at night so I've seen some very nice bass below the beach on the mountain side. Occasional huge musky are seen as well. I've been told real early morning is a good time but plan to leave by 9 or 10. Good luck and let me know how you make out.

fishing user avatarcentral.PA.bass reply :

yeah you are lucky if you catch a 9in crappie... most are around the 8.5in range!

Cool! Thanks CPB.

On a side note, I did see that at Glendale the floating dock has been installed at the Wyerough launch. Think that's where I'll head this morning. Stayin' close to home to save some gas $$$
