Never Ending Winter 2024

fishing user avatarTopwaterspook reply :

I figured that in another two days all the snow would finally be gone from my lawn. This morning I awoke to find the entire yard covered in another thin blanket. I'm surely getting tired of this!

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

It's 18 in Erie right now. Lake is 33 degrees in Toledo OH & Erie PA. It's going to be a later ice out than last year.

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

I think this will be the latest ice-out I can ever remember.

fishing user avatarlecisnith reply :

Last year there were still icebergs in northern Lake Michigan in July. I wasn't able to start fishing until late May. Where I am, at least, it is going to be warm much faster than it was last year.

Last year was a later then usual ice out as well. My first day on the water was April 20th, the lake still had ice over a large portion of it. Probably be about the same this year. I am thinking though it will be a little bit earlier this year.

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

April 16th is my guess for ice out. Probably could launch in a couple rivers before then if they aren't to scary.

fishing user avatarFelix77 reply :

Coating of snow here too. Very depressing. This winter won't end.

fishing user avatarclayton86 reply :

Went to bed with 0 snow other then the piles from plows. Woke up and there is at least 3" on the ground and covering my truck. Either way my favorite river is opened up its a little high and looks like chocolate milk but I'm going Monday in the kayak I don't care if I'm wearing tons of layers I am getting out I need it.

fishing user avatarthomas15 reply :

I checked my local lake, still ice 100% coverage. We received a few inches of snow today and the evening temps will be below freezing for the next few days. I put ice out at the earliest April 11, but probably will be closer to the 20th. Amazing.

fishing user avatarPatrickJr84 reply :

I was looking at the forecast in my area, Akron, Pa. Saturday is showing snow again lol this is terrible. Last Saturday it snowed here too. I'd be happy with just a few days of 50's!!!

yeah this is ridiculous around here in the Lancaster County Area

fishing user avatarTopwaterspook reply :

Monday, I drove over the Youghiogheny Resevior.  It was entirely thawed. Though there wasn't a single boat on the water. A tournament angler friend, told me that a buddy of his has already fished it twice. He's not gotten any bites yet. ................There's a tournament coming up on Raystown Lake next weekend; if I remember correctly. Everything up around my home is still frozen. Hang in there fellas. The thaw is coming.

fishing user avatarMike2841 reply :

It's been one hell of a winter that's for sure, but I feel like the seasons have just shifted a month. I was fishing well into December this past year thinking the water should have already been iced over.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

Still locked up with ice here...But ice or not, tomorrow is supposed to be nice, so I am loading the boat up with the gear, putting the batteries back in and firing her up on the muffs. went to the DMV today and got the trailer reg. I'll be ready when it finally thaws out in June.

fishing user avatarDuster7466 reply :

My buddy went ice fishing today. :crybaby2:

The only time I've ever even thought about ice fishing is in the dead of winter when I haven't had a fish on line for two or three months. Still haven't been able to bring myself to get out there, however.

fishing user avatargrampa1114 reply :

The last time I went Ice Fishing....I caught 200 lb........brought it home and the wife tried to cook it up.....we almost drown.......

fishing user avatarDogBone_384 reply :

There'll be open water soon enough, it just takes more patience (discipline to keep the 'monkey' away too).  I drove to my closest fishing spots on Monday and can still walk across them.  The longer the bass stay under the ice, the more aggressive they'll be when the sun finally hits them - at least that's the attitude I'm maintaining.

Just keep thinking how good it'll feel to make that first cast....  soon enough....

+1

But I'm also dropping my boat off at the marina for some work.  She'll be ready to go by next weekend, just in case all the ice suddenly melts off the lakes around here!

Tight lines,

Bob

Are we ever going to get spring? I did see 62 degrees on my truck thermometer.

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

Ponds are still iced over today. But with the temps being more "normal" over the forecasted 7 days and rain occurring on most of them, I suspect open water will be available in the very near future. Hopefully early this coming week.

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

Well we saw 60 and sunny today, with temps in the teens and snow for tomorrow. Not a surprise as far as how this winter/spring has gone. I anticipate my home lake open around the 18th which will put my first day out the 26th.

I agree.  I drove past my regular spots this afternoon.  All were still solid except for Whitman's pond in Weymouth, having enough open water on its route 53 bridge to cast from.  Didn't get any bites, but it was good to get the cobwebs off one of my baitcasters...

Soon...

fishing user avatarMainebass1984 reply :

I went ice fishing today. Still 13 inches of ice.

fishing user avatarLuckyGia reply :

Makes me happy that after last years winter in NY I came down to Florida and bought a house to escape the winter blues. I was back in NY for the month of February ( coldest month on record) Could not wait to get back down to Florida. Been killing the bass all month of March and still killing them now. Heading back to NY next Friday and am depressed just thinking about it.

But I will say, NY gets high regards as my favorite state for fishing, just not ice fishing for me.

fishing user avatarclayton86 reply :

Ice is off most the lakes here in wny now seen a guy monday on one of the local lakes hammering bass on square bills.

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

Ice is finally leaving the ponds and lakes - slowly! And, of course, it snowed last night. :(

I dropped my wife off at the airport yesterday. She is flying into Boston and staying with her daughter in Ipswich for two weeks. It sounds like she should have packed some winter clothes and boots...LoL.

fishing user avatarTopwaterspook reply :

Everything is thawed here. Lots of rain and a southerly wind. It shouldn't be long before I catch my first of the year. The boat is out of storage. It needs prepped and I'm surely ready. I've got a chance to fish a farm pond once. I had no bites but am hopeful that I'll do better the next outing. I hope everything opens up for all of you folks soon so that we can get back to doing what we really live for. Tight lines, all.

fishing user avatarMainebass1984 reply :

4 inches of snow here this morning. Still a bunch of ice in VT 18 inches or so. Back in Maine there is 13 inches of ice. Looks like spring arrives next week.

Few spots open as of now. No big lakes, been out in my jon boat 2 times and took 2 skunks.

fishing user avatarTopwaterspook reply :

I got a chance to slip down to a pond between the storms today. The water looked like thin chocolate milk. The wind was pretty stiff. I was throwing a 1/4 oz. Terminator spinnerbait with a gold Colorado blade. In an hour and a half I managed to catch three, only about a pound a piece but It felt really good. :Victory:

Most years the ice hangs on until mid April anyway - Like this year.  But on those Off years when we get a crazy early thaw, I can be on the water so much earlier -

fishing user avatarDogBone_384 reply :

Metro Boston and south towards Cape Cod is pretty well open.  As of Tuesday the only waters still too frozen to fish were Houghton's Pond (Milton, MA), Whitman's Pond (Weymouth, MA), and Jacob's Pond (Norwell/Hanover, MA).  Little Pond & Billington Sea (Plymouth, MA) are both open.

All waters I saw while driving from Foxboro, MA (95S) to Berlin, MA (495N) and back to Boston (90E) were open.

Have fished less than an hour this year, without a bite.  At least I got the rust off a couple of reels.

I could put the boat in and drive from the launch to George's house, but most of the east side is still  unusable. At least as of the drive-by I did 1/2 hour ago after I got out of work. I am shooting for sunday.

Same here but the other end is even better. I believe Maine used to end around Sept 15th maybe? So now we can fish until ice-in; which for me was Dec 14th last year.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

Finally 60, yes sixty degrees today. It's mud season for a while but not too bad. The turkeys are mating, the Jake's are in full bloom.

The deer herd that's been here every night feeding has been gone the past few days. One big doe looked like a moose from the back end she must have twins. The does must be birthing by now. I guess they will be back hitting the corn with there babies. The does ate here when they were babies. In a week or so ill pull the corn till fall.

fishing user avatarTopwaterspook reply :

I was up along the Allegheny River at Parker, PA today. There are still piles of ice jam along the shore. If the current slacks a little, I should be able to do some smallie fishing real soon.
