Im looking for some spots to hit after work that are close by. Cuba and rushford are more than an hour out, i want something closer. Anyone have any ideas?
Devils hole at the gorge has always been good to me.
It's a little bit out, but Chatauqua (spelling) is a killer.
I try to get out during the week as much as I can and I prefer not to drive far. If you're in the Buffalo area there are only a few choices that are within an hour's drive. The Upper Niagara, Lower Niagara, Wilson Harbor, Cassadaga Lakes, Bear Lake, and Silver Lake but most of those are around 55 minutes.
Yeah i have yet to get out to those, however theyre on the list. I used to fish Billo quarry years ago. Im looking for something like that. Whats the deal with Phelps Pond in oakfield?

Never heard of it but oakfield is near me. If that way there is also ringneck marsh off 63 I do pretty good there just be sure to bring some bug spray.

There is a Phelps Pond kinda northeast of Indian Falls that I fished a long long time ago when we were building a new house for the landowner there. Loaded with small to medium sized bass at that time, but I do believe it is probably private property now as it was then.
I live in Orchard Park and usually fish ponds around the area when I'm not going to the lake or river.. always looking for new ponds to fish. .
I know it doesn't help in this case, but I second Chautauqua Lake. I grew up on the lake and have enjoyed many years fishing on it. I'm actually going back home to visit for a couple weeks next friday and will gladly pay the out of state fees. If you ever get the chance check it out.

I also believe it is private... in fact, i'm almost positive.
There is also Dewitt Pond in Batavia... if you can get off the shore, there are great bass and pike to be caught. They also stock it with trout. It is very over-fished in the spots you can reach from shore tho. It is great if you have a kayak!!

Well it's down pretty far from where the good oak orchard action is, but still pretty good for pike and smallies... Even an ocaisional walleye. As you probably know, closer to point breeze is great fishing! sorta like a mini Amazon river... So many species of fish can be caught and you never know what is going to be on the end of your line when you hook up!

Oh I thought you ment put in the oak off 63 in the swamps. Yeah I put in at 3 bridges and hit each branch and hammer pike and bass.

Yeah, that's where I go in. It's just before the marsh from where I'm coming from (south to north).. Have you ever fished glenwood?

Glen wood is the worst lake in he area in my opinion. Now fishing he outlet of glenwood below the dam not the lake itself now that's a different story that spot always produces

I thought glenwood was pretty good actually. Only been once but caught a limit of smallies and a pike. Bunch of rock bass too.. I only ask cuz it's a great sized lake for a kayak... I'll have to try below the dam for sure then!
I've been to Glenwood three times now and never caught much. I was always under the impression (because that's what I was told) that we were at Lake Alice each time but now, after looking at Google maps, I realize we were actually at Glenwood Lake. I wasn't impressed so don't feel the need to return but now Lake Alice is on my radar for this year because, despite what I thought all those years, I've never been there.
I've heard of Lake Alice too, but never knew what people were talking about. For clarity's sake, are you guys referring the body of water formed from the damming of the oak orchard? If I recall it has a horrific launch. I was there once and caught a few, but nothing special.
Well Glenwood is a bit further down than the popular Oak Orchard dam, but still part of the Oak. Yes, you are correct no39, Lake Alice is what is above the Oak Orchard dam in Waterport. Really good fishing from there all the way up to Lake Ontario.
Tubes around the rocky edges at Glenwood seemed to work pretty good.
Lake Alice is my baby anytime you guys wanna try it give me a shout I usually kayak it though it's big and a longggggg paddle some days it's worth it. I also fish from the bank from time to time. The dam below Alice on the oak had fresh steel and a few Browns right now also
Hey Clayton how is the launch at Alice? I have a 19.5' in real nice shape, is there anywhere to launch a boat like that without beating it up? I drove over two hours once to a small lake that only had a dirt ramp with no dock. If I'd been alone I would have had to come home but luckily my dad was with me so he sat in the boat while I launched and then I waded out to him. One of the previous posts mentioned a "horrific launch" at Lake Alice which scared me a bit.
@RiverDaveI suppose I should elaborate on why I had a bad experience there. It really had nothing to do with the launch itself. The one I used was this one.

My experience there was mainly due to bad luck. It was a combination of being rather busy, a few inconsiderate people, a poorly maintained ramp, guys fighting with their girlfriends, trucks breaking down, and the jetskis doing donuts near the ramp that put me off that lake. Which I suppose is pretty standard stuff now that I think about it.
Edited by no39The ramp does end abruptly J Francho has been there a few times he might be able to explain better. I kayak so the ramp don't matter to me much and I have some private spots to launch up stream more by the mouth because I hunt " the flats" which if you head up from the launch to the second bridge all the land on the south side till you hit the next section of the oak is all called "the flats" it's all private land that I deer and coyote hunt but there's a boat launch on the guys land also I can use. Saves me from paddling a few miles up the lake to get to some of the prime spawning areas.
That at lake also does yes get very very busy and crowded come sometime I usually like to hit it during the week to weed out some of the crazy. But for the most part people tend to stay between the two bridges so once you go past kenyonville bridge it's just fisherman.
lots of docks and Lilly pads on the lake but also some DEEP rock cliffs and channels along the north side of the lake south side is all docks and some nice coves.
And now I'm depressed and want to go fishing dang it
Thanks for the info guys, I will definitely give Alice a shot this year. Fortunately I'm able to do weekdays so hopefully I can avoid some of the crazy......I hate crazy... Little worried about that launch and what looks like a lack of parking for the truck/trailer but the docks and lillypads sound wonderful. Those are two things I never get to fish out on the Niagara. Now I'm depressed too! Almost over, few more weeks to go!
Check this page on Wednesday he usually updates it but it covers both lakes well all three counting Ontario and all the tributaries in Orleans county. It's fairly accurate but more geared towards the salmon and trout guys but he touches on bass in glenwood and Alice once season stars coming around and he gets reports.

Awesome, thanks Clayton!
I'm gonna try lake Alice maybe Wednesday after work gonna swing by today or tomorrow to see how the ice is. If not Alice then probably the oak or johnsons creek off rt 18 in kuckville is a great spot for early small mouth and trout
