Figured we should have one of these, bass aren't always the target species.
I caught a few stripers and largemouth on Lake Anna the other day. Good fun as always, finally got some fish to eat those 2015 Bassmaster Classic Hype Baits.
A 4.5 Pounder at the local business park.
This is an old one from the 80s.
From earlier this winter in Cuba. I used a 1/3 oz Cleo, casting of the beach.
It fought hard on ML walleye gear / 10lb Power Pro.
Caught a few of these guys on a float-n-fly after school. Ponds are gonna freeze again soon though
My PB crappie so far 1.43lb caught on a tube
Caught on Toledo Bend, wasn't weighed or measured!

Holy slab
redfish from chirstmas in florida.
d**n greedy, these trout are. That's a Rapala Crankin' Rap 5...
I was bass fishin and this guy came up and hit my lure the second it hit the water last summer, right up in the weeds near the bank. Not supposed to even have channels stocked in this lake, but they're in there.
First, albeit tiny, Coho Salmon of the year!
A slab I caught last week!! 2 or 2 1/2 pounds on a rainbow 5 in paddle tail swimbait!!
Fished in the SNP for some wild trout today. Had a blast!
I just can't keep away from these guys this winter, not a bad problem to have though.
Caught this little dude on a silver buddy with 12lb test in December. He went 62.5 lbs. The bass fishing has actually been decent throughout most of the winter here, so my multi-species fishing has been mostly accidental.
The only other noteworthy catch of this winter is this slab crappie my friend caught. Didn't weigh or measure it, but it was huge.
2 of our 7 crappie caught while bass fishing this weekend. These two were the biggest at 1.65 lbs and 14.5 inches. The rest ran about 12-13 inches and 1 pound each.
Caught this Southern Flounder in January. Used a baitcaster and the salt ruined it. It was 4lbs and cooked it up for dinner

That's funny, because I seem to see one that is quite large, and the other one is nothing to sneeze at. I'd love to catch one as big at that bottom fish.

She was in the mid 40's, but had a girth just over a 21". We didn't keep her out of the water long at all (maybe 15 seconds) so there was no offcial weight taken (not that I even carry a scale in the first place to take a weight measurement). Formulas put her in the low 20 pound range. She felt about that. When I first saw her quickly roll up by the surface, I thought I had a giant, because of how fat she looked. However, the next time I got her up, I knew she wasn't as big as my racing mind (and heart) thought. Still fun to catch though (as any size musky is)
These pretty little guys have distracted me from bass for a little bit. When I caught two nice ones on a wacky rig I knew it was time to get the UL and some jigs. In an hour and a half today I caught 22 crappie, 22 (dink) largemouth, and 7 bluegill.....This thing called spring...I LIKE IT!
Cold, cold steelhead from late January. Probably one of the coldest days I have caught fish on.
From top to bottom
yellow perch
white perch
pickerel
mirror carp
It's been a few weeks since this trip on the ice. But here is the photo of my first fish through the ice of 2016: a little bluegill.
It wasn't the best day on the ice, but I finished with maybe 15 fish. Here are some of the Goliath yellow perch we pulled up.
I've also been keeping busy with the Brooks and Browns around my parts; I don't take many photos but take my word I've been catching more than just this one!
Caught a couple bull gills on the float-n-fly out of a pond a few weeks ago.
Also caught my first few trout of the season last week. I'd have video but my Virb is unfortunately at the bottom of the lake now
Caught a couple good sized crappies yesterday in the rain on a zara puppy spook they were hammering it jumping all the way out of the water!
Cant keep the huge crappie off my spook! This one was the biggest went 1.3 on the scale. Pulled some drag thought it was a bass
HOLY CRAPPIE.... this fattie gobbled up my spinnerbait last night!!

Awesome fish!
no pics but i caught a 3 lb pike last night on a Lucky Craft slender pointer
Went to the patuxent river near my house first cast caught my first snakehead. It was 24 inches and 4 lbs fought pretty hard. We chopped its head off
Almost got myself a state record Rock Bass today! This little girl was only 11" long but weighed 1lb 5oz on my scale. Maryland state record is 1lb 8oz...I don't know if it was full of eggs or just on a binge? Heck of a little fighter too!

Wow I've never seen one that big!
Massive cold front came through today so I decided not to fool with any bass.......14.5" crappie was the largest of many for me. And my little brother caught a 13" yellow perch
had a great weekend visiting with my family... managed to do a little fishing saturday evening and sunday afternoon althought saturday was about the most wind i've ever actually stayed and fished in with the kayak.
caught a nice rainbow and fat crappie as by-products on the wacky worm.... then on sunday my dad and i hit the creek for some trout. i landed 2 browns nice size and a beautiful native brook. had a blast with the old man!
These were from my first trip out this year. Caught both on a hair rig rigged with corn.
29 inch 13lb common carp
Possible rainbow trout. Did not measure, appx 15 inches.
got these a couple weeks ago
My little brother and I braved the 40mph gusts today in search of some trout. We did pretty well. Kept 11, released 5.

Nice carp! The second fish is a brown trout, and a nice one too.
Went our for some panfish yesterday and caught quite a few decent perch and crappie. Ticket was a marabou jig as the water was still quite chilly.
I am touring WVU tomorrow, but I had an hour and a half to kill in Morgantown, and I never go anywhere without a fishing rod.
1st white bass ever too
26 1/4" and 6 lbs 2 oz.. In eastern Nebraska.

24 in channel kitty 6lbs caught on cut up eel.
I can't hardly make a trip this year without doing this it seems. Hurt even worse that it was during a tournament again.
sight fished
we went out on Lake Norman today and my cousin caught, not one, but two blue cats on Zoom lizards. both went around 8-10 lbs each. first one broke off at the boat but not before i got this pic. we usually catch a cat or two early in the spring but did not this year. the lizard in his face looks like a moustache.
This fish was 19" caught some others in my pal's boat that went about 26". Im on the first wave just a matter of time till the biggins move in.
Trout everywhere!

While having a cruddy go of it in finding Smallmouth in Erie, we happened into a pod of Walleye. To lessen the sting of sucky bass fishing that day, dinner that night was certainly tasty...
First time in the kayak. Wish it wouldn't have gotten wrapped up so I could have got the full experience.
A hair under 13", this fish was out in the middle of nowhere over 60FOW
One of my sons caught a nice black crappie
I had quite the multispecies day Friday. Largemouth, smallmouth, bluegill, warmouth, white bass, walleye, channel cat, and drum, almost all on a Ned Rig. This channel cat was the largest fish of the day and gave quite the fight.
This is the biggest carp I have ever caught i think; 37". Big heavy fish who knows what the weight was. Almost spooled me what a run out to the middle of the river whew!

I managed to catch this small snakehead n a short evening session. I'm not sure how but I managed to catch it on bread.
9lbs channel cat, caught it with my ultralight setup. He was a scrappy guy, gave me a run for my money.
I managed to nab this spotted tilapia the other day. Caught it on my ultra light setup. It was a little bigger than my hand.
Caught this 28 inch 12 pound carp in the patuxent river on a bread ball. Luckily my brother was there he got in the river to net it! What a fight it put up!

We usually do use the outboard but we were experimenting to see if it really matters if you use the outboard or not. If you have the baits behind the boat far enough it really doesn't matter what motor you use. So you will probably be able to catch some. Put your baits out in an area that you were marking fish and run the baits through them. What baits do you normally use?
Caught several large blue gills on Shasta in the past. Not sure the exact species, but these are a few of the nicer ones.
12 in 1 lbs Sun Fish
11.5 in 15 oz Sunfish

My little brother caught one trolling a Manns stretch 15 from our boat in anna, and we have caught some nice ones on DD 22s, SK 6XD, and the bomber fat free shad that go 20+ trolling them from our kayaks. Down by the dike we troll jerkbaits and alabama rigs from our kayaks.
I would probably just troll a couple heavy a-rigs and a couple deep diving crankbaits from our boat

I have noticed that the stripers strike crankbaits with a very slender baitfish profile more than cranks with a short and fat body. I also like to use a double rig with a redfin and a bucktail jig . I have an A-rig but have not had any luc with it.
I swear it was bigger than it looks..
Catching one of these guys is a pretty rare deal for me. Catching 3 in one day, and one while I was burning a Bull Shad, is unreal.

I was on a role Friday. Missed probably a half dozen more, all on my homemade bladed jigs.
The bass were not cooperating so we made some makeshift crappie jigs with a piece of a trick worm on a 1/8oz swimbait head, and fished them on baitcasters with 12lb line. We would pitch the baits into laydowns and the line would jump on the fall, just like bass, it was crazy

Instead, all I caught were black bullheads that were ~1 pound or so that fought really hard. Also managed to poke myself with one of the dorsal fins by accident.
Lastly, right before I left, I saw a huge koi swimming around in the shallows. Anybody got any tips for bait or lures?

I don't actually know or care where you are at this very moment, but per your "location", the PA FBC's website had this to say:
IF YOU CATCH ONE |
Anglers catching snakeheads should dispose of them properly. Anglers suspecting they have caught a snakehead are encouraged to NOT release it, and report it to the Commission at 610-847-2442 or via email.
So while yes, you may be technically correct in it not being ILLEGAL to re-release one in PA the bigger picture is that it's that way because they aren't prevalent enough to call for a law on it yet- and the FBC is literally asking for your help in figuring out where they even are at this point. Perhaps YOU should read up on proper disposal of them! In any case if you don't care about responsible enjoyment of the waterways, I can't make you. Have a nice day sir, and enjoy your lunkershare snakehead management efforts. Lol. |
Thanks for assuming that it was in public waters, man. but keep up the blabbering and assumptions of what i did or what occurred after the catch.
Cool well just so you know...
PA REGULATIONS
It is unlawful for a person to sell, purchase, offer for sale or barter live snakehead species in Pennsylvania.
It is unlawful to possess live snakehead species in Pennsylvania.
It is unlawful to introduce or import live snakehead species into Pennsylvania waters.
Transportation of live snakehead species in or through Pennsylvania is prohibited.
So I'm not sure how the fish was introduced into said private pond, how long he plans on possessing it or how many times you boys catch something before you kill it and actually I don't really care but have a nice day in any case. Just trying to be helpful. Lots of people don't know or care and I like to imagine us all as not being part of that. When you said he caught it before I took you two for people who had no idea how bad snakeheads are- Sorry if that isn't the case!

Instead, all I caught were black bullheads that were ~1 pound or so that fought really hard. Also managed to poke myself with one of the dorsal fins by accident.
Lastly, right before I left, I saw a huge koi swimming around in the shallows. Anybody got any tips for bait or lures?
Lets see that fish out of the water!

For those of you unfamiliar with Boston slang, the term WICKED means very, great, unbelievable, etc., etc.,
10" gills in Northern IL water temps in the 80's and the bite was hotter than that. We fished pieces of nightcrawler under slip bobbers in 8-12fow.Wasn't a ton of big gills to be had, but the bite was nonstop. Probably boated 80 gills and went thru 4 dozen worms.
oh ya! good eating there!

Flipping the grass with a Pit Boss. First time I've ever caught a flathead doing it.
Later the same day, this greedy dude smacked my frog and managed to get both the hooks in his mouth. Looks like he might have had a run in with the flatheads larger cousin and escaped.

Not sure if it's an alligator gar or spotted gar etc. Some kiND of gar forsure.
It's not a black tip. But it's very similar. This past may , with a chunk of "Bonita". They were hanging around a small sunken ship! My brother got a black tip first roughly the same size. We brought it to a chef who prepared it two ways. Blackened and some type of spicy grilled. Both were the best fish ive ever eaten. (I don't even like to eat fish ha-ha )
Took my cousin who visit me from Thailand to drift fishing for catfish at lake Henshaw CA. We caught a whole bunch of 20-30 kitties but very small. Finally he caught one good size one and then me about the same size.
Went out ocean fishing in Brookings Or for our anniversary. We caught some nice lingcods and a nice cabazon.
Caught probably the longest Redear I've ever caught yesterday on a Ned with a PB&J Hula Stick.
Caught this beautiful brown trout while drop shotting a tube
Only caught one fish today, but man it was a beauty.
For those that have asked about this technique I refer to often for catfishing. I made a rough video showing how I do it. I wasn't prepared to do it but the fish feeder went off and looked like the water was boiling from all the fish so I thought I'd take advantage of it. I accidentally said baitcaster when I'm obviously using and always do use spinning gear for this technique. Otherwise, it turned out okay with a very nice channel that never should have made it to the boat.
We've had a slot limit on walleye here the last few years as the population has taken a serious hit due to over fishing and an increase in panfish numbers including crappie. While this isn't the largest walleye around, to me it's an important find as it shows the slot limit is working and that some natural spawning success is happening.

Nice fresh salmon from the weekend.
From today
Water temps 62, down a couple degrees from last weekend. Got skunked bass fishing last Sunday so I decided to change it up.
First fisherman we saw today
Marked fish all over the water column shallow down to 18ft but couldn't get a deep water bite. We had to work for them but ended up victorious
Couldn't keep them from jumping out while I transferred them from the boat to the chopping block

That's a monster wiper! I'm glad to hear that at least a few survived the winter, I really hope they stock some more this year or we're going to be out of wipers. Did you get it on crappie gear?

You can have all the wipers they put in our small lakes. All the big bass disappeared after the state did that and most of the smaller fish are skinny and sickly looking. They lakes that can support them, they're a blast, but they sure can wreck a little lake too.

Agreed. They did that in a few lakes I use to fish. The population of bass wasn't good in the lakes to begin with but got worse after they stocked the wipers. They found out a decade later that the bass couldn't compete with wipers for food and that adversely hurt the bass population. Not to mention depleting the bait fish numbers.

They added a bunch just a few years ago, so they should start showing up next year as they outgrow the white bass...and yes, this one came on a 2" crappie tube on 3# line

Seems to be a mixed bag depending upon lake and species composition. I've heard others mention them hurting big bass populations, but that's been anecdotal. In some of our lakes they almost never live past 4 years old in any numbers, and in others I've seen them go 7-9 years. If they're going to stock them, I figure you might as well just make the best of it

I'll bet that was both challenging and fun. I hadn't heard that they stocked any more wipers since 2007, but i'm glad that they did. Excited to hopefully catch a few in the next few years, I have yet to land one. I did hook one last fall while white bass fishing but the hook on my in-line spinner bent out right next to the boat. Fought like crazy while I had it though, just like a fifteen pound white bass.

I just meant their qualities.. such as their eyes and shape. They get real big too ! I imagine a huge one might offer a better experience in terms of a fight.
In the weakest fighting fish thread walleye was mentioned alot..
Walleye are delicious and bass aren't.
Wow nice muskie! What state was that caught in? Looks like our NY Great Lakes fish. Great picture too btw.
I've always found walleye one of the best tasting but worst fighting fish. I never cared for the way they fought or the way we fished for them (always either jigging or trolling both of which I found boring) but as a food fish they can't be beat. I'm right on Lake Erie which has some incredible walleye fishing but even so I don't bother going after them. Just not my thing I guess. They are cool looking fish though.
Muskie was caught in Northern Minnesota. The lake I fish does not have many, but I have been lucky enough to catch a couple over the last few years while bass fishing. Caught this one when I was out alone. Muskie Selfie. My son lost a big one this year on a wacky worm. Jumped clear out of the water 15 feet from boat and snapped line. I had a very sad boy that day.
The fall pattern has finally inched its way into toasty So Flo, as evidenced by several satisfying catches during this evening's sunset excursion along the bank of a local pond, courtesy of pond water that is no longer at boiling temperature and thanks to the awesome jerkbaits from Megabass.
Muskie selfies rule! Catching a muskie on bass gear is always a blast. I see a lot of fish here, get a lot of follows, and hook several muskies every year. Even with all that I still rarely get more than one a year to the boat so it's a thrill when it finally all works out. That's why I can really appreciate your picture because I know how hard it is to get a fish like that for most of us.

On that Helsinki shad rap. Nice
Went inshore fishing with my son yesterday. We usually catch a lot of redfish and flounder this time of year.We generally fish 2 creeks ,so we know them very well. They Always produce for our target fish .
Until yesterday. We could NOT get bit by our target fish.My son will never fish for anything else if that's what he's after.
I will fish for anything I can catch, which usually involves dead shrimp as bait.
This was the result of that philosophy.
SPOTS.They are delicious!!!
Just caught this one out back on one of the mud minnows we used in our saltwater trip yesterday.( See above )
The crazy thing is that we fished these continually where they are native in salt water yesterday and didn't catch a fish.We usually tear em up on them.So I throw one out in a freshwater lake and get a nice fish.
Cannibal crappie. Look what they were spitting up
It's that time of year again.

Hybrids, I'd be calling someone with a certified scale if they were whites.
This is the latest (November 5th), I have ever caught a fish from the boat. In my neck of the woods people are waiting to get on the ice. Very warm fall. Fishing was slow, but had to go 1 last time.
22" Hybrid, it ate a tiny shiner on a Carolina rig I was using for walleyes. The #4 Aberdeen hook surprisingly didn't straighten out!
Nice catches guys.
Though there may be snow on the ground, the spawn sac bite has been on. Using uncured Atlantic Salmon spawn.
Couple very pretty wild trout today! My brother caught the brown which was was 17", I caught the rainbow, 20". All released.
N Florida Mike, Spots are durn great eating!
Caught my PB walleye this evening, crushed the Alabama rig I was throwing. 4.8" keitech swing impact fats with a 5.8" swing impact fat in the middle. Thought I had a giant largemouth but you can only be so disappointed with a fish like this! 27", 5.68lbs, and a $20 reward tag in her back.

Strange how mature that fish looks for not even 14"
Definitely kind of weird. The bigger rainbows/smaller steelhead start to develop steelhead features including skeins and milt sacs, but are a lot smaller than the average steelhead parts would be.

My friend and I took a few cans of corn to the river today and got into some carp. There is a yellow/orange one that lives with a school of probably 50 fish, and it's now my goal to catch that one before spring. I've got nothing but time and those fish are the only ones around here we are catching. My friend hooked a fish today that he didn't turn at all, the fish peeled 40 yards of line on one run before wrapping him in something out in the river channel and breaking him off, I have no idea how big that one was, because the 19lb one that I caught was pretty easy to handle!
Top fish was 19 and change, bottom was 13 and change.
Carp that size are always good fun on the light gear; good job mate.

Nice fish guys! Yesterday I had the best ice fishing day I've ever had. I was in the right spot at the right time throughout the whole day. The walleye bite was on fire for the fist time all winter. Non-stop bobber action. Was also able to nail a fat walleye jigging and a Jumbo perch on a glow Moonshine jigging lure. Oh and to top it off, inside one of the keeper walleye's mouths that I had caught, was a blue chrome Lindy Ratllin Flyer Spoon. It was wedged deep in its jaw with about 3 feet of line coming out of the walleye's mouth. Must have snapped someone off last winter. I say that because there was no treble hook left and yet the lure was stuck deep in its jaw. Probably my coolest fishing treasure to this date. Some new splitrings and a sharp treble hook later and I think it will be good to go for the next trip out.

Very nice jumbo perch.

Had a fun time ice fishing today. Got set up and within an hour the walleye bite was on fire. I landed 3 keeper walleyes in less than 40 minutes. After about an hour the bite sizzled out. Slugged out the day and had a bunch of throwbacks to keep me busy. Finished with 3 keeper walleyes, 4 perch, 4 throwback walleyes, and 2 throwback pike.

Went and checked out a lake I haven't fished in a couple years on the way home yesterday. Had a 5' Ul with 4lb test on a 20 size Trion and a #8 Xrap. Never seen or heard of a drum from this lake, a big bass was about the only thing it could be in my mind while I was fighting it. I was pretty disappointed to say the least.

I think if you pull them from cold water and bake them they'd be alright. Smaller ones would probably taste better and have less Mercury than the bigger ones. Do NOT pan-fry them whatever you do. Arguably the worst taste I've had in my mouth. Nice fish regardless @Bluebasser86

I think it depends a lot on where they're caught and what they feed on. They're related to the black drum and redfish, both popular food fish, but for some reason get a pass as table fare. I have an uncle who swears they're the best tasting fish in freshwater, but his sanity is a bit in question so take that for what it's worth.
There's some bass in here too, but mostly trout. They were small but very fun catching them on the rod that @.ghoti. built for me.
Made the last ice fishing trip of the year yesterday. Set up in my hot spot and waited. The morning bite never came. Most likely because all of the walleye were stacked up at the river mouth (7 miles away) gearing for the spawn. Stuck with it, and was rewarded by my bobber getting sucked down. Set the hook and pulled up my PB Walleye at 20.5 inches 2.68 lb. Literally one of the only bites I got all day. This must have been a straggler male who most likely was starting to move towards spawning grounds. Note the tail area. Packed up shortly after and called it a day. Happy to end the season on a high note. Tight lines everyone.

oh yea!! nap time next.
Spent an hour getting dinner today when I was out looking for bass. Top right was 13.5", a darn nice one for me!
Caught a little guy on the 9" suicide glide this morning before class. Yes I need new hooks.
Caught my first Brown Trout today. 15.5 inches. Rainbow trout was 15 inches. Inside the Brown's stomach was four spawn sacs and 3/4 had hooks in them!
Caught my first bowfin in a few years at a pond that I've been fishing at for over a year. I didn't even know that they were in there. He absolutely crushed the whooper plopper. I had to replace the rear treble and split ring because of him.
Caught a big crappie on a Ned rig my first cast Thursday.
Then a new PB wiper on a jerkbait later that day, 11.2 pounds.
Good multi species day for me. Got 2 trout 2 largemouth bass and a pickerel.
6 lbs on a picasso shock blade with a lake fork trailer.
what in the world is that?

If you're talking about @YoTone's fish, appears to be a snakehead.
Thanks. They havent made it to my part of the country yet.

Mike, bullseye snakehead are all over Florida ! Which are non native
Bowfin are very similar and are native to North America.
Im not sure how snakehead were introduced but I do know they are all over the country and Florida is prime territory for them !
Google Florida snakehead, and find a canal near you that holds them !
I know theyre down south but Ive never heard of anyone catching one in my area, which I consider to be from the Georgia line to ocala fl.
I think it's a different species of snakehead that lives in the NE that grow larger than the Bullseye but I could be wrong. We don't have them here, just other wonderful invasives like zebra mussels, Asian carp, white perch, and Eurasian Water Milfoil.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/17/record-bullseye-snakehead-florida-broward-canal_n_2895621.html&ved=0ahUKEwiApoHIm6nTAhUGQSYKHYfMAugQFggaMAA&usg=AFQjCNH7iW7qKgbhhAYj7ZIqexSaP8GHmQ&sig2=uOCVZlGGVeX3cepy0lN_hg
Record bullseye found in Broward county FL.
I guess the record for northern snakehead is just over 18lbs. The bullseye was found electroshock at over 14lbs with the record being just over 12 by hook and line. So. Not too much difference.
@soflabasser can go break this record
Trout caught Easter Sunday on the Kastking Sharky II
Went to the pond after dinner. I caught 1 largemouth Bass and 4 Pickerel on the Kastking Sharky II
When out to a brackish pond by my house to test out some new lures. Kept getting bumped on like every retrieve so I hiked back to the car and retrieved the single inline spinner I had with me.
Caught about 24 white perch, maybe eight of which were around this size.
and maybe ten slightly smaller like him;
The rest were super small dinks that I am always amazed can even get the hook in their mouths.
There were a bunch of guys fishing for them with bait on the other side of the pond and having little luck. One of them wandered over after seeing me land like 3 in 4 casts with a 5 gallon bucket in one hand and two tallboys of Highlife in the other. A deal was struck and everyone walked away happy.
While getting rid of the Highlife back in the woods, I ran across these guys;
The pond is full of carp, so I assume that is what they are from? A buddy of mine is a biologist and always appreciates it when I bring him dead stuff from the woods, so they are now proudly on display in my yard until he picks them up.
Another night at the pond. Caught 3 brook trout and 1 Pickerel suspended jigging a trout magnet with a 1" gulp minnow on my Kastking Mela II

Brookies are probably my favorite tasting panfish.
When I first got into fishing those Trout Magnets were my bread and butter lure. I really need to leave the bass rods at home and have a panfish day soon.
Have you ever used the slightly larger Trout Slayer lures? They look like tiny craws and I found that the small increase in weight really helped casting distance and accuray in mild winds.

I have not heard of them, but I will be on the lookout for them.
Casting distance is an issue sometimes as the magnets are ultra light. I have solved this to a degree by using a weighted float for suspended jigging and to get some casting distance. I have been thinking of trying a slip bobber instead so I can get the bait further down when casting farther out.
Raven makes some good floats. Way better than Thill:

My basic stream & small small river ultralight setup consists of three things:
Slurpies. Panfish tube jigs from Northland tackle that are awesome for working bottoms.
Small Slug-Gos weightless t-rigged. Soft jerkbait from Lunker City (their texposer hooks work great w them). Pulls crazy fish out of rocks and specific cover and it is so much fun to drift through current and twitch in eddies.
Joe's flies. All kinds of colors and several sizes. Killer for covering lots of water and seem to catch all kinds of stuff.
I bring a few pieces of small terminal tackle too but not much- everything HAS to fit in my pocket pack. I never use bobbers, they're the devil's work ?
The manufacture recommends adding a split shot or two a foot or so up so the lure can move across the bottom, but I have almost as much, if not more luck letting it make a slow gliding fall into holes.

There's a local guy that hand turns a similar float. Works great for under cuts on the fast side of a bend.
I've been leaving the crappie alone lately and just targeting some bigger blue gills. This is an average one which came in at 8.5", just love the colours on her. Hoping to break the 12" mark over the coming days as I enjoy a week off and get to do some more fishing between the house errands that just never seem to end.
I've been fishing an Angler's Choice 1.75" Crappie Fry on a 1/64oz jig head with red bleeding hooks under a Thill slip float. The colour I've been using the most is called Bionic Tiger, a two tone chartreuse and orange with a thin triangular shaped tail which quivers when shaken. There is an additive added to make it react with UV light which I have yet to put to the test but will be doing so this weekend.
Next up for me will be some pike fishing for a couple of weeks before walleye opens in May.
Cheers, hope that your spring is going well!

My boy was catching everything in the pond except bass Sunday evening. Caught them all on a wacky rig or a 2" grub.
He's not crying in this picture, just very expressive as little kids tend to be and his crappie was too heavy for him to hold.
He was wearing out the big green sunfish with a wacky rig.
Great job little man!?
Bluebasser86, the best part of those pictures is how comfortable your son looks lipping & holding the fish. He appears to have a healthy curiosity about each fish and has already learned how to check them out without hurting either himself or the fish.
Before you know it, he will have you in the back of the boat...

As a guy that has an 18 month old at home whose name is "Fischer", I am totally jealous of these pictures and can only hope that my son loves fishing too.
Congrats to you and I think it's great that your young man loves the sport and I'm sure is already a lot better fisherman than a lot of the guys I see at the lake on the weekends.

Kid has zero fear of the fish, wants to hold most every one he catches but I don't force him to do it if he doesn't want to either. He can ID most of the fish he catches and we go through what places not to touch on each of them. Just working with him on presenting the fish to the camera better now.
I'm hoping in a few short years we'll be fishing buddy tournaments together. He likes looking at my trophies and says he wants his own.

I've got 2 boys, Lake and Finn. Hopefully Finn with like fishing just like his big brother does. Lake was only 2.5 when he caught his first fish by himself, so you're not far off. Keep him exposed to it, but don't force it on him. As soon as it's not fun anymore is when they stop liking it.

The only catch from my last outing:
Zander... the European cousin of your Walleyes.
@Bluebasser86 I think it's awesome your son is so young and is holding those fish.. my daughter is almost 2 and is very smart. I'm thinking it won't be long before I take her... I have a 12 year old cousin, whom I took the other day to catch his FIRST bass... And I did manage to get him one. And then he wouldn't even hold it for me to take a picture... He said "ew"... I hesitated to tell his mother that he might be... Umm... Well ya know... Not so manly.
Went down to a small local creek that I used to fish all of the time and caught some beautiful sunfish on a rooster tail.

@budgetbassin - the one shown above, I've never seen that colouration before; is it what one would call a redbreast sunfish?

Cool. I was looking at the pictures thinking "It's a walleye. No, it's a sauger, look at the spots on the dorsal. No it's a walleye, look at the markings on it's side. No it's a sauger, no white spot on the tail...".
Then I scrolled down and read "Zander". Ah.........

I don't get many crappies on Cut-R's
I've never caught a crappie on an artificial worm... Craziest thing was probably a 5" swimbait. But never a worm.
Everytime I hook a crappie on bass gear it just gets dragged along the surface lol.
I've caught crappies on some crazy stuff, but never a worm. Poppers, jerkbaits, fish head spins with a 4" swimbait, DT10's. Never on a big worm.
I've been catching crappies on a 5" wacky rigged stick worm in the neighbors pond lately. Last week they were hitting everything I threw, so much so I got frustrated with catching them and left. Caught crappie on a 1.5, 127 slender pointer, 3/4oz football jig with a Rage lobster, shakyhead, ned rig, spinnerbait, didn't matter they ate it all.
I had a guide trip today and got on one of the craziest, funnest bites I've ever found. There was what I thought was wipers blowing up on shad inside the off limits area on a power plant lake, just as far as I could cast a jigging spoon. They were big fish alright, but I was pretty shocked when we started boating blue and channel cats that were busting shad on the surface on jigging spoons. No monsters, I had one 14 pound blue, all the rest were under 10 pounds, but they were some of the hardest, jarring strikes I've ever had and of course the fights were great on bass gear.
And of course we had several big drum throughout the day too.
Bluebasser86 I've never seen cats schooling on the surface . That would be pretty cool .
Caught 2 Pickerel today. Wind was blowing my bait right to them.
Another pea from today that crushed a pins minnow on the UL.

I've seen channels do it on lakes where they feed them a lot, and I've heard of blues doing it at LOZ, but never personally seen blues do it. No doubting that's what they were, and apparently they were feeding quite effectively too.
The morning started with a crazy white bass and wiper bite. It was pretty much like it is in this video for the first 2 hours.

If they fight anything like a walleye, it would be similar to reeling in a log
I got out for a couple hours earlier... Caught a few bass... And noticed some catfish prowling the shallows... So I decided I was going to catch a couple gills and use em for bait.. well I ended up catching some brutes on some crappie nibbles. They were thick too.

me and a friend fished this 5 acre pond (mud hole) for a couple hours this afternoon and managed to scratch out around 10 fish, mostly crappie, on yellow road runners tipped with yum curly tails, but this bream stole the show.
I'm glad I found this pics forum.
I caught this Chain Pickerel on Friday, the day before New York Pickerel season opened, but it would have been undersized anyway, not meeting the 15 inch minimum, so it lived to see another day.

I'd call that a green sunfish or green sunfish hybrid, but not a bluegill.

Got bit by several large reds, but none of them committed... broke off a huge black drum trying to land him (too big for the net, also Berkley Vanish...). Caught a lot of dink trouts.
Black and gold / blue flake 4" senko.. helluva surprise and an even better fight.

I think some call it a bull head
I'm pretty sure it's a channel. They get dark in color.
Here is someone else's channel catfish I found as soon as I googled black channel cat. It's not a blue. Look at the anal fin.
85 % sure it's a channel.
@Bunnielab it's a Berkley cherrywood 6 foot MH. Perfect for bank fishing . And only 25 bucks. For the money it's above and beyond
Someone who Chases catfish chime in please.
Lol ? bullhead, I fish for a lot of species that's a channel.
I was going to say bull heads usually channels have white bellies with speckals. the bullheads we use to catch were usually black in color. but I am no expert. bet it was a fun fight tho!
It's belly was all white... The owner of the pond told me his brother stocked channels in there.. so I just assumed. It's not a blue or a flathead that's for sure.

Yeah generally the bullheads don't get very big
That's a big male channel. They turn nearly black and their heads swell up during spawning time. Channels only have spots as juveniles, they disappear once they become adults. Blues anal fins are very straight and unmistakable.

Several species of bullhead so they cone in a variety of colors. Easiest way to tell a bullhead is their head is rounded like a channel, and their tail is rounded like a flathead.
I am pretty sure this is my PB Perch.

I have one. My foot is in the picture to give viewers some perspective of size. Unlike this picture where you have nothing to compare the fish to.
nice one
Couldn't find the bass, but I did find dinner
Found this 26 inch slow rolling a keitech over weeds inside a marina.
Was also able to make a short video on the catch. It is definitely choppy, but I'm still working on my editing skills. Don't laugh too much haha
Accidentally caught 5 or 6 bluegill on a yo-zuri jerkbait. I was quite impressed with their grit and determination
Caught this nice copperhead bream on a spinner bait.He crushed it before I could even engage the reel.
It's that time of year when everyone is up shallow and hungry. In addition to largemouth and smallmouth this past week I've caught; warmouth, green sunfish, crappie, walleye, white bass, drum, channel catfish, flathead catfish, and trout. A finesse or micro jig fooled most of them. A couple of my favorite ones, I have a soft spot for flatheads, even tiny ones.
I caught 3 walleye on Thursday, this one being the largest at 20-22 inches (board only goes to 18 so I didn't bother measuring).
My oldest also caught a monster crappie from our neighbors pond on a wacky rigged 5" stickworm. It looks big in the picture, but it was even bigger in person, 15-16 inches by the mark on rod he was using. The 5" bait just about fit in it's mouth without having to be bent.
Some awesome photos being posted here, glad everyone is having a great spring and catching a lot of fish!

Beautiful fish A-Jay!
Got out surf fishing early this morning at Amelia Island FL.
First cast caught a nice whiting.I think, it's on!.Then, all morning it was slow.My buddy caught another whiting and my son got a nice pompano.Cuaght several sting rays ,a jack, and a couple small spadefish.
Took a lunch break, then did some 4 wheeling in the sand.Went back and started tearing up the whiting. We ended keeping 14 + the pompano and threw back several dinks.
Nothing big,but something bit my son's 65 pound power pro in half.
All in all= good day.

Think of it as my way of saying "I ain't scared".
Lots of very recognizable landmarks on this lake, along with the fact that it's one of very few lakes in the state with the variety of fish. Not really a big secret unfortunately.
23.5" red (PB so far)
21" with vegetation (circled in red) growing out of his side? Looked like its been there for a while because the flesh healed up around it.
Manatee came and spooked me, and then spooked the reds I was sight fishing...
Also ran into dolphins the last two times I've been out. They came within 20 feet of the kayak.

Double check when you see that "vegetation" growing out of fish. It's not uncommon to see all sorts of stuff growing on a tag.

Must be some deep water to hold lakers.
I caught a few crappie today jigging craw imitations for bass.
Some post front gill action today
Beside plenty of bass, this has been a good multi-species weekend so far with several nice cats, walleye and bluegill. And I've had some fun fishing with my electronics, too
I caught 29 of these guys last week in Canada. It was a great trip.
Caught a brook trout while Bass fishing. It was quite a surprise
The biggest catch of the weekend by my fishing partner.

Lots of very recognizable landmarks on this lake, along with the fact that it's one of very few lakes in the state with the variety of fish. Not really a big secret unfortunately.
Quick let's all drive to Kansas to bass fish!
Oh wait...
Been catching a lot of these guys lately. This big Warmouth slammed a 90 Whopper Plopper next to a flooded willow tree.

Gotta love the action. I use a little 5ft ultralight with 6lb test and nightcrawler pieces. They are in prespawn/spawn right now in northern IL. Big gill action is usually hot until father day.

My 2 1/2 year old hooked a 4+lbs. channel cat on a dock demon with light line with a worm over Memorial Day Weekend. We fought it all the way up to the dock without a handle on the reel (fell off) by spinning the reel by hand. As I got down to grab him, he broke the line and got away. My boy did not like him getting away and spent the rest of the day yelling "Daddy, I want a catfish!!" He already has the fishing fever! We tried to get him again, but only caught bluegill the rest of the day. Once he got the bigger fish, they just weren't as much fun. You can see the direct aftermath of it getting away in the pic below.

Went surf fishing again this morning at Vilano beach, near st Augustine. We got to the beach ramp ready to roll and found that they closed the beach for driving for a few months. So we couldn't fish our big fish spot near the inlet. So we settled for an alternative spot.
Once again got into the whiting except the average size was larger than last time. Also got some sharks, catfish,
Croacker, and small pompano.Something with some size loaded up on my cut bait pole but the hook pulled. Also caught the smallest fish I've ever caught in saltwater .Once again, got to enjoy quality time with my son, put some delicious fish on the table, and enjoy the beauty of creation. Blessed man I am !?
This was all the keepers .we probably threw back another 20 or so that were too small or illegal.
Nice shark. Is that a bonnet head? Whats your gear like that you land the shark with?
Yeah , bonnet head. I have several surf combos. I caught that one on dead shrimp on a 10 ft rod and an old heavy Olympic spinning reel that was my dad's.I use a small R &R for fishing just behind the breakers,a medium range outfit and one I can cast WAY out. Also a big 12 ft rod that I use only live or cut bait on. I feel like this pretty much covers everything .

Great thanks! I was hoping that is what they were. I think I have now caught every species of sunfish we have around here. The Warmouth has been eluding me for a year or two now. Such a great name too!
I bought a new 5 weight fly rod a couple of weeks ago and I think it came with some mojo. Some noteworthy catches so far include some of my biggest crappies and trout, and my first carp!

Spent a week in gulfport Mississippi with my gf at her dads house. Most of the trout were caught on live shrimp and snagged a few on shrimp swimbaits. Caught the lady fish off an island in the gulf pulled so hard for its size. My gf learned how to use a cast net and caught 22 prawns. Got back to maryland and grilled all the fish and shrimp. Caught my first black drum and first redfish.

A beauty for sure. Congrats!
I was wading a sod bank for fluke this afternoon. Slow day overall, had one short fluke and this nice 20 inch weakfish.
Caught two it should have been four though. Lots of boils and swirls fun action.
I just got back from an evening of fishing. Here are my bonus catches a pike and crappie around 12"
Been a good spring for the big warmouths. Another good one pitching a beaver into the grass on Thursday.
The local river finally got down enough to fish and the hot weather had me itching to do some catfishing, so I went and caught some fat little blue cats, it was a good time.
Two baby Wels...
The largest tributary to the great Lakes, just off Erie was very good to me this spring. For me this year I had 6 solid weeks of limits nearly every day on the Walleye. Even though the limit is only 4 per day, but seldom taking more than an hour or two to get em, and who leaves when your catchen fish, even if your limited,,,, then it's catch and release time.. That's just fishing between sunup and staying as late as 2 or 3pm, fished at least 5 days a week mid March thru the end of April, and the freezer is stocked! This was about the average limit,, till the last week of April, then 18"-20" was about all you could find. Still f=good eaters, and them last 7 to 10 days fish were everywhere, easily catching over 30 a day.
Then when it was peaking I had few days where the bigger eye's cooperated,,
It was a rough 6 weeks and get's tougher every year,, but thats what the river bank was made for,,,, a place fer us old geezers to sneak in a power nap,,, something I used to never need!
Well done Capt. Bob! Sounds like an amazing spring
I want to noodle for Wels.
You down @Jelvas?
Ya the Gills cooperated ptetty good the month of May in Southern Mich. as well on a couple Lakes, the first pic was a 10AM Limit so I hit a northern Ohio lake on the way home and added 22 more bull gills to the day's catch,, and half of them on the cricket fly,,,
Now it's time to rebuild this boat fir the 2018 Walleye run,,, maybe take some time out njext month and stock up on some of them big Yellow Perch from my honey hole,, 12"+,,, we shall see, but it has been a very good fishing season so far,, and we do have some fry'n to do!

11.5lb, 28" Smallmouth Buffalo, 7 lb Striper, 6lb Blue Catfish
Bass season opened up on Saturday here in PA. I was flipping a 7" worm up under overhanging trees into the shade.
Hit the lake for bass opener in zone 17 and ended up with this musky, gave a great account of itself on my crankbait setup.

Any well trained spearfisherman can handle a fish of that size, especially if there are no other predators to worry about. I often spear groupers in areas infested with bullsharks, that's much more dangerous than shooting a big catfish. With that said, I would prefer catching a wels catfish on rod and reel and leave the spearing for saltwater fish.

A barbel really doesn't look like a predatory fish but it's super cool that they will eat things other than chunks of lunch meat that the guys in the UK like to camp out with haha

Oh but believe me... they are! And, pound for pound, probably the best fighting fish we have on our waters. The fight doesn´t last very long, but, while it lasts, it´s like you´re hooked to a torpedo...
Pitched into a laydown and thought I'd hooked one of the DD bass that live in this lake for a minute, should have known.
Caught my first longear sunfish today. Unfortunately he took all 3 barbs and there was no way to get them out without serious damage to him, and I didn't figure a jerkbait would rust away so I had to put him out of his misery, to bad, he was a feisty little guy

Not that I would do it for a sunfish, but you could always cut one or two of those hooks protruding outside of it's mouth to remove the hooks.

I've had them do that lots of time when I was younger and fished roostertails a lot. Almost impossible to remove the hook without tearing their mouths up when they're sewn up like that.

Jerkbait crappie
Had one of the best mornings spent fishing in my life. A friend of mine from church took me out to the local powerhouse chucking wire flies beneath bobbers and it was a blast! In 5 hours we hooked probably 27 fish and landed about 20 of them. Roughly 6 steelhead ranging from 12-18 inches, 9 whitefish ranging from 10-17 inches, 1 dink Atlantic Salmon, and 4 brute Atlantic Salmon in the 20-26 inch range. This guy has these fish dialed in! We threw all fish back besides two whitefish and my first true Atlantic pictured below. This guy weighed just over 6 lbs and measured 25 inches. Literally took 15 minutes to land this beast! Can't thank that guy enough for an unforgettable experience. Will definitely be back for more bobber take-downs in the near future.

I would be one of those guys. Maybe it would be different if I had the right equipment for night fishing, but even though I was able to connect with a 3.5lb smallmouth on a deep crank at 11pm, it was the first time fishing that I came away thinking "this is not for me". And I'll gladly fish in some crazy weather/conditions.

Too bad.
You do not need to throw trebles at night but with a little practice & some intestinal fortitude, for every chunk you can catch in the summer during the day - there's a decent chance you can get 3 at night.
And you'll most likely have the majority of the water to yourself.

I am with A-Jay on this one. Night fishing is a lot of fun. You don't need a ton of special gear, at least not from my kayak. Good bug spray helps though that is for sure.
The thing that freaks me out the most is when a beaver comes up and slaps it's tail about 10' from me. That will get the blood flowing a little, well that and the bats that seem to enjoy chasing m baits. I have stopped fly fishing at night for that reason. after having to unhook one of them i figured this wasn't the best idea lol

My special night fishing equipment consist of a good headlamp, bug spray, a body of water I'm familiar with, and a few rods rigged with single hooked baits. No need for those blacklights or any other special gear. I prefer it over daytime fishing when it's hot for just the reason Ajay said, more quality fish and they're much more aggressive at night normally.

Caught this last week just before sunset. Took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting a flathead to hit a topwater bait. It did put up a good fight.

@12poundbass I've tried to make night time bassing video's more than a couple of times.
Between the humidity at night totally soaking the lens and the light I need to make it, blinding me - they all end up looking more like a cross between The Blair Witch Project & something that was left on the cutting room floor of a bad Jacques Cousteau episode.
So needless to say, it's been tough sledding.
I'll keep at it and eventually I hope to get something decent & worth posting.

Is this a spotted bass? or just a Largemouth? Lm are kind of rare in this area. I caught 6 "bass" today, 4 smallmouth, 1 rock, and this guy. His mouth is why I think it may be a spotted, more like a smallmouth's mouth
Looks like a large mouth to me.

Largemouth.
That's a largemouth.
Spotted bass of that size is usually much more slim. Plus spotted bass will have a rough patch on the tongue.
This is a spotted bass. Notice the size of the tail, the jaw, the slightly different coloring, and the dots on the belly.

The thing that freaks me out the most is when a brave comes up and slaps it's tail about 10' from me. That will get the blood flowing a little, well that and the bats that seem to enjoy chasing m baits. I have stopped fly fishing at night for that reason. after having to unhook one of them i figured this wasn't the best idea lol
Bats can ruin an evening real quick. Darn things can catch tiny bugs using their "radar" but I'll be damned if they can see fishing line.

A Summer night of Bass Fishing just wouldn't be complete without the three B's . . .
Bugs in your eyes & up your nose.
Bats hitting your line, triggering useless hooksets.
And That cursed Beaver - Blasting it's tail on the water 3 feet from your head causing heart palpitations & the need for new pair of draws.
Good Times.

Yup caught one of the 4lbs bullhead catfish on whopper plopper, gave me excitement of getting a big bass for a minute.
fishing was good today for about 90 minutes, then they turned off. Got 2 wipers, a nice 1 lb 13oz smallmouth, 1 nice barely legal walleye, and 3 little cigar size saugers. All released
the nicer wiper tore my gulp bait up. the jig ripped down into the minnows head. 1 fish and it was basically ruined for that style, I hooked it through head only and caught the walleye and a sauger
using a Ned Rig in shallow water this 6 pound drum nearly pulled the rod out of my hands when it hit.
this guy was fun on an otherwise slow day.

Maybe it would be different if I had the right equipment for night fishing, but even though I was able to connect with a 3.5lb smallmouth on a deep crank at 11pm, it was the first time fishing that I came away thinking "this is not for me". And I'll gladly fish in some crazy weather/conditions.
never bass night fished but do like to catfish my problem is them skeeters sure do like me . and come in teeth first ,and I think these dudes around here think bug spray is candy!
Got into some really big bluegills over the weekend. Had a blast with the ultra-lite tackle, and we were reeling in gills this big every cast.
This is from earlier in the summer. 3-4 chain pickerel.
nicest hybrid I caught this week.
Had a great week with smallmouth, with a couple pigs. One I could only describe as a football, not long, just fat. Greediest fish in the river. Here is a decent sized one I caught on a 3/4 oz white/chartreuse bucktail hair jig that I throw to target hybrids.
Walleye continue to hit right before it gets dark. Not sure where sauger have gone but I only caught 1 this week and I'm not complaining. This is a 14 or 15 inch walleye, caught on a 1/4oz jig and gulp minnow, normally use 1/8oz but needed extra weight to get my bait to where I needed it.

Looks more like a channel cat than a bullhead in that picture. A sure way to tell would be if the tail was forked or not. A forked tail would be a channel, straight tail is a bullhead. They sure can smash a topwater though.
Took my oldest boy exploring in a creek for the first time. Caught a variety of fish, but the spawning longears are awesome looking fish.
ha oddly enough I caught a young flathead on a jig+plastic last night. berkley havoc paddletail thing, bobby lane design, bama bug color Been catching a lot of channel cats too this year on plastics(gulps mostly). Most of them have been when the water is really muddy. Haven't got a bullhead on a lure yet, did get a brown bullhead on trout doughbait. Maybe they are spawning if you got it on topwater. Bullheads are amazing parents compared to most other fish
Ned rigged a juvenile flathead. It was a welcomed change of pace from the drum I was hammering on.
Drum have been hitting like crazy here too, a guy I fish with was using live emerald shiners and the odd 2-3" gizzard shad(he was just dipnetting them out the river) under an egg bobber and he caught 40+ drum in 4 hours today, only caught 9-10 desirable fish(smallies, walleye, hybrids). Drums and catfish have been most of what I been seeing since we got rain a few days ago and watter got muddy
They were stacked thick today. Could do no wrong.Followed the school around for a couple hours. Probably caught 100. Sorted thru lots of small fish. Gills perch, bass, and a lone crappie
Lots of action chasing crappie this afternoon. Kept a few for a meal, then enjoyed just swinging on them the rest of the afternoon.
I finally got my first pike today!! Wasn't rly sure how to get a good pic so don't mind the first time awkwardness hah
It's been a trying few weeks for me fishing for Atlantics. I've hooked into 4 solo fishing. The first two have snapped me off, one of which I fought for literally 45 minutes before my mainline gave-out. The third used my clamp line as leverage to pop loose. The fourth wasn't so lucky. I've been gradually improving my setup and I believe it is safe to say I have found the 'magic fly' thanks to trying multiple nymph patterns via Orvis. Picture looks a little funky, but was happy to land this 18 incher for a tasty shore lunch.
Had a fantastic day fishing the local bay after work today. It was too windy to troll for smallmouth, so I anchored deep into the weedy inside bends and fan casted a Rapala X-Rap in perch color for pike. It took a little bit of moving around, but I was finally able to hook up with this 25 incher. Using 10 lb trilene, he took me for a 7 minute joyride. I thought he might be a muskie since I'm used to fishing heavier line, but I couldn't complain. Also proceeded to land three 23 inch pike on the same bait, with two striking just feet from the boat! It was incredible. Rapala jaw-grippers came in handy here. Filleted the only legal one and gave it to a coworker. Inside its stomach was a 5 inch perch. I think the Rapala matched the hatch well. Fish On
No pics of it, but i managed to land a 44.5 inch flathead on a medium-lite rod and an eight pound leader a couple weeks back. Caught her on a 1/8 ounce shaky head with a trick worm, fishing slightly offshore on a brushpile in 12 feet of water. Took me into the brush at first, bit somehow untangled itself and went out into open water. Followed her on the trolling motor, until the cat finally got tired about fifteen minutes later. My scale only goes to 25 pounds, but we estimated the 44.5 inch flathead to be in the 45 pound range.
My wife first catfish(almost 10lbs) from this lake on our Sunday evening. It was her first cast and only 10-15 mins, talk about luck. I think she got her fishing license worth now?.
Ned rigged channel cat. Hooked it under a dock and took me for quite a ride trying to get it out of there.
Fishing has been phenomenal for me this past week. Lots of nice fish casting. Pike came on Rapala Husky Jerk Perch, Atlantic came on a fly, and the walleye was a big surprise for me using an olive X-Rap. Thought it was a sub legal pike until it surfaced. Didn't even bring a net since I figured I'd just be pike fishing. Thankful that it stayed on long enough for me to land with fish grips. There is great fishing to be had close by. The local bay where the pike and walleye came from is a 7 minute trip and the powerhouse where the Atlantic came from is a 30 minute boat ride from my house. Hoping to catch a few more nice ones before school picks up again. Fish On
Caught my PB Pumpkinseed this morning while fishing for bass. This guy nailed my Chug Bug.
Back at WVU, so these guys come along with move-in. Caught another one on a spook this morning too!
Launched at 4:30am with one of my buddies. He's been having some success at a couple spots and we wanted to make sure we got there before first light.
The water was nice and flat, and it was very peaceful on the water. It was a welcomed change from the summer boat traffic we normally have to contend with during the day. I trolled an SP minnow on the way to the sod banks we'd be working to start the morning. We were hoping to get on a topwater bite. Sunrise pics never get old.
A lot of bait busting on the surface. We were optimistic. The conditions were aligning for a fishy day. But after a few casts we realized the fish feeding on the bait were not our target species.
Little snapper bluefish all over the place. These are aggressive fish. Caught a bunch of these guys, all about the same size, and was careful in taking this one picture after this one finally calmed down after a minute of thrashing. I did not want a treble hook in my finger.
We made a move, hoping to get away from these yellow-eyed monsters and was finally able to land our target species.
Not a big fish by any means but I was ecstatic to land one this morning. Had a couple more blowups on my lure but I was only able to hook up with this one fish. I cannot wait for the fall run when there will be much larger stripers in our waters. I considered this productive 4 hours on the water. Learned a few things and marked a couple more spots for future trips.
Got some footage on my GoPro, maybe I'll post it if I ever get around to editing it.
While Kayak fishing this weekend I caught a 3 plus pound Channel Catfish. Quite a surprise as I was fishing a Ned Rig. You can see it in the corner of his mouth in the top pic.
Managed to get the afternoon off so I went to see if the eclipse would affect the Atlantic Salmon fishing. Usually the middle of the afternoon is not a great time to target these fish, but today was the exception it seemed. Ended up 1/4 with two fly break-offs on 10 lb test. Very difficult to land. Got two hookups right as the eclipse was taking place. The other two came about an hour after it had finished. The 4 lber I was able to land was a brightly colored male with some light red speckles. Hard to tell from the picture though. It looks like they are starting to shift towards their November spawn as the females and males are pretty easy to tell apart now. I'm hoping the Kings start moving in with the Atlantics. Would love to fight one, even if for only a few seconds. Fish On

Perfect picture with the freighter in the background.
Using live Bluegills 2 feet under a float is my favorite way to catch channels! Last night........
By the way, Shimano OC Baitrunner is absolutely perfect for free lining livebait. One crank of the reel and you engage and lock for a fish on! Circle hooks prevent gut hooking for a nice catch-and-release.

It's a fun debate. There are no crappies in this pond so that's why I originally eliminated that species. However, the canals sometimes introduce nonstocked species in ponds which explains why a random flathead could end up in a neighborhood pond. Either way, it's catfish bait to me

I just zoomed in on the mouth, and it turns out it I was wrong, you had it right in the first place. I saw the crappie-like coloration, and assumed from that it was a crappie. Way to small of a mouth for crappie though, and the spines are different. My bad

That's what caught my attention first, and just the overall color pattern (or lack thereof)...or maybe I just have too much experience catching baby bluegill Missing HL already...not the same not having that place right down the street. Once things cool down a little I might try and swing out your way "for old times' sake." Not looking like I'll have a new lot anytime soon, plus they're going to pull the lake down 10' next year really early.

It still looks like your doing really good rock hopping, far better than it's been out here. Last two weed treatments caused major fish kills, and ruined fishing for about a week each. I think they might be using a different chemical, I've never seen them react this way before. Only taking ~10 pounds to win the tournaments.
You're always welcome to run my boat, name the time and day and I will be there. Really learned a lot watching the way you approached offshore fishing last time, made my whole summer.
BTW, is it set in stone that the lake will be drained ten feet down next year? Is the lake still going to stay open for fishing? I hadn't heard anything about that till now.

I agree that it's a juvie gill, but FWIW, crappie are legal bait in KS as long as they're legal keepers and you count them towards your daily limit. Not sure if it's the same where Dorado is though.
My eclipse day fishing was pretty awful, but I did catch a monster sunfish, a bluegill/green sunfish hybrid I believe, which are pretty common here. 10.5" long whatever it was.

Thanks for chiming in and nice hybrid! I live in Phoenix and it is lawful to use live bait in community waters, except Tucson down south FWIW. Plus, there is a bag limit of 10 for sunfish at lakes with no minimum size. AZ is pretty lax compared to other states.

Not 100%, but it was becoming more likely when I left. They are replacing the spillway, so permitting and everything needs to be done well in advance. Lake would get pulled down immediate after Labor Day and held that way until the project was complete, or the first of the year. I'm guessing the lake won't be closed, per se, but the boat ramp and most docks would be unusable. Could still drag no a car topper or canoe and be fine though, I'm guessing. That's what's been done in he past. Any idea when Marina is closing this year?

I know a guy (Jim and Shirley) that lives on a main lake point that has 12 feet of water 5-6 feet in front of his dock, and he gave me permission to pull my aluminum boat up there last time the water was pulled down, and said I could use it again if needed in the future.
The boat is light enough that two or three people can lift it up, so it really can't get stuck.
Not sure when the marina will be closing, I don't think it's been announced yet but I could be wrong. I am personally looking forward to when the marina is closed and the security boats are winterized, they've really been cracking down on driving in the wrong direction. Even just fishing offshore and using the trolling motor, staying in relatively the same area, is getting people warnings. Not that it's stopped me from fishing offshore, I just have to make sure to not move the boat much. But you can forget making repeated trolling passes both ways over structure.

something out there bites the trailers off of my bladed jigs all the time . I am assuming it is drum.
Perch eating perch...chunky one at that!!
Caught a pretty nice shellcracker earlier in the year. I wear XL and XXL gloves if it gives you an idea.
Bass fishing was less than stellar yesterday so after a couple hours of catching 13 inchers, I hit up the gills. Caught a ton and sorted thru a lot of 6-7 inchers to take home some 7-8 inchers. Anyway, I smoked a few of them on a cedar plank. Kept 6 fillets to make a cracker spread. 1 package of cream cheese, a few tablespoons of mayo, finely chopped green onions, and the bluegills. Delicious
Change of pace this weekend by chasing crappie. Right up there with bass fishing in my book, at least the way I prefer to chase them. Had great weather and company - always a nice bonus ?

Believe it's "popsicle". Different pictures show the accent color as more pinkish or whitish depending.
jumbo perch from today
It was like filleting a bass.
Pike Day today ~
Atlantic Slammin Season is Here! Been trying to catch one of the bigger pink salmon that are fresh in the river, but so far I haven't had any luck with them. Also tried for some late night kings a few days ago and went 0/1. Had a great time with a nice screamer though. Should be able to hit that creek again sometime this week. Of the few I've been privileged to land I've given some to the neighbors and the rest to different recipes. I usually grill or bake them, but am excited to try some salmon soup tomorrow. It's looking like a great fall. Fish On everybody.
Almost forgot. What's cool is the university puts on a fish cam under one of the closed off turbines so you can get an idea of what kind of fish are present and how much are around. Most on the cam are atlantics and pinks, but sometimes you'll see a whitefish or king on. They live stream it so usually you have to jump from the current video to a different link in a few days, but it is excellent quality.

Is that over on CL? Thought about going there today for bass, but decided against it because of the labor day boat traffic. Went to one of the gravel pits I used to frequent instead, and got a bunch of bass fishing from shore. Jerks and shaky heads, on the old ramps.

Coon - better quality at Cat, and less boat traffic, but didn't want to drive that far.
Took the kayak out Saturday morning hoping for a topwater bite. Chance of rain kept boats off the water, had the feeling of a crisp fall day. Labor Day weekend, and we had the water to ourselves. Can't wait for the fall striper run.
Another beautiful sunrise, doesn't get old
26.5 in striper
Whopper plopper enticed these little bluefish to bite, but this fiesty things will hit anything lol
The late summer berry hatch is on! Never got an official grass carp on a fly rod before (caught one, but it was hooked outside the mouth), managed to entice one to eat an egg imitation and get an official first on the fly. Just a little guy, but still took about 5 minutes to land.
Found a huge school of black crappie in a tiny brushpile off the front of a deep dock too. Hammered them for 20 minutes before I got tired of catching them.
Surprise August Laker
Measured 30". I felt awful having to remove her from the Lake, but she had 2 treble hooks deep in the gill plates, and had already fought a 15 min battle up from 80 feet to warm surface water.
I was trolling in 80 fow after seeing some marks in the 50-60s and got curious. So I let out a Rapala DT20 with 200 yrds of 8lb fluoro line out. I thought they were pike or deep SMB, never thought I'd run into one of these in August.

I was wondering if maybe that Lake Trout was out of season.

Nope, lake trout are open all year, three fish limit, any over 12".

If it's a NY caught fish, I think he's fine.
Haven't check the wall at the post office either.
But either way, I didn't wanna go there.

Well you can't win them all. For whatever reason the powerhouse turbines were all shut off today so fishing was very slow. Managed a hookup with what I would estimate a 20-21 inch pink salmon male. Had to have been pushing master angler (21 inches). Threw the hooks as my friend was trying to get the net. Did get a nice 30 second video of it though

Followed me home for dinner
With about an hour of daylight left, I got the extreme urge to fish, so I loaded up my kayak and hurried to the river. Only caught one fish, but it happened to be musky number 27 for me! She followed a war eagle spinnerbait to my kayak and I missed her on the figure 8, but dunked the rod back under and she ate it as soon as I started figure 8ing again! Super cool in clean water, I have always wanted to land one on the figure 8 in a kayak!

Gorgeous fall day - a little to nice, actually - lol. ENE post front breezes and bluebird skies, but we still managed
a decent crappie catch given the conditions - just no slabs.
Caught a whole bunch of these guys tonight on a yellow perch patterned Rapala Shadow Rap...fun times! Can't wait for the colder weather to bring the bigguns in shallow again. And a bonus twofer, a pair of rock bass hitting the Ripstop!
My buddy wanted some fish to eat, so we did a little crappie hunting. I'd found them last week, and they hadn't moved an inch. 15-18 feet of water with a 1/16oz ball head and panfish assassin.
I love Fall fishing for Sunfish. Technically not Fall yet but the big Pumpkinseed and Bluegill think it is.

Yes Lakers are in season year-round here, totally legal catch. I just like to return big ones like this to the water to breed.. but it is not always possible.

He said that because your face was blacked out. ?
Warm spell moving through this last week and again next. Highs near 90 will temporarily halt our fall fishing progress. No rush, as the crappie have begun grouping up a bit as they move in from their main lake summer homes. A couple pics from this weekend.

Nice crappie, its been a while since I've chased them. What model depth finder is that? Those are some really good screen shots.

Nice crappie! I like it when you post the sonar screenshot. Keep it up!
Wind was killing me yesterday. Lots of bites but too much line out on a long cast in deep water to get the hooks in them. Only got this little guy to stick.
More crappie Lots of pressure bites tonight. Good practice ?
Got a nice 36" muskie tonight while casting a bone whopper plopper 110 hoping to catch a nice wiper or smallmouth after a little rain rolled through. I ended up having to get in water, grab the fish, and slide the fish up the bank to keep my lure and the fish, She broke me off right as I was landing her. Not real proud of how I handled her, but better than swimming off with a whopper plopper treble sealing her mouth shut. She swam away strong, I got in river with her for the release, tried to take debris off her without her losing too much of her slime. Definitely wish my line didn't break, I would of done my best to keep her from touching dry ground.
It's hard to tell from the bad picture, but that is a drum's mug with only the blade of my 3/8oz bladed jig and 5" swimbait trailer, still visible. It was a chore to remove.
Got my first snakehead today!
I was surprised he hit a Ned, I was way undergunned for the marsh I was fishing, I was pitching to open water right up next to the bank and he grabbed it.
^now that fish looks cool!

I'll bet. Very nice.
Off topic, I had a first happen on Sunday. Was panfishing with my dad and as I lifted a bluegill out of the water a pike jumped out of the water and grabbed it. I've had them chase lures clear out of the water before but never this.

The video to go with my bad picture from Monday. No idea how a fish with such a tiny mouth can eat a bait like they do sometimes.

After classes I hit one of the local spots for steelies and got the hit I was looking for, but couldn't get the right hookset so no dice. Tried another shore spot and still nothing. Went home, dug through some plugs I had and found one that I'm not even sure where it came from. It's a pre-Rapala Short Wart in the prizm gold shiner color. Never fished it before, but figured it'd be good. Brought it and some of my other lures to a different location that allows for shore fishing over a set of rapids. Basically you fish off a bridge into the rapids downstream from you. Within seconds I hooked into a 5+ lb chromer on the 1 oz spinner. It was unreal. I watched in disbelief as it threw the hooks on the surface. All around I could see steelhead feeding on the surface though. No one else was even fishing, so I realized things could get great. I tied on the short wart and began casting, but it was out of tune so I began making the adjustments for it to run straight. When I finally got it running true, I bombed it where I had seen a steelhead sipping. I started twitching it in fast erratic sweeps back to me when this 5 lb male didn't want any of it. Struck so hard, my drag was screaming before I even realized I had a fish on. Managed to battle it in and get it in the drop net. Came out to be 24.5 inches and an even 5 lbs. Also hooked into another 2-3 lber in the same spot on the same lure, but it popped off as I attempted to land it. Finished the afternoon 1-4 but I'll take it. Looking forward to Sunday's Dinner. Steelhead are in full swing now. Water temps a touch below 59 degrees.

Thanks guys! Yes, I am grateful to live in a fantastic fishery. The only coldwater fish not in abundance here seems to be brown trout and a handful of other salmon species. Everything else comes in year-round numbers, you just have to learn how to catch them. I'll look into those lures. Thanks for the suggestions.
Little early morning top water Pike. Excuse my dad's thumb.
went out to the mudhole for some blues. throwing some chum along with 5 other boats maybe 3 or 4 of them charters. however, fish were rolling through at 130-150' on the fish finder. tied on a wounded herring jig and hooked into this 16 # monster. what fun
rod she was landed on
Striper and blues are awesome
Tautog aka Blackfish aka White Chins aka Slipper Bass or simply Tog, has been my target species of late. Hard fighting fish and is blast to catch on my lighter spinning gear. The jig has been killer so far for me this season.
A little surprise finding one of these guys in the very back of a cut in 1' of water along a weedline. Thought it was going to be a catfish at first.
The 110 catches everything!
Caught this bow deep nymphing the Roaring Fork in Colorado over the weekend. Caught over 30 viscious pre-spawning browns off streamers from a drift boat on the Upper Colorado River the day before. If I wasn't in AZ, I would probably be more addicted to streamer fishing. Such a fun annual trip!
Friend and I caught over 250 crappie on a trip late last week - had a great time. Water temps are starting to cool, trees are near their peak colors, and even saw a few bald eagles ? Love fall fishing!
Horrible fishing on Monday for the first few hours before the wind blew and I got called off the lake. Only one fish even worth catching and it was the wrong kind.

We call them Tennessee redfish or Alabama smallmouth to make it sound like we accomplished something haha. In all seriousness though they are fun to catch and hit about any lure.
The first 3/4 of October, life was good and the steelhead fishing was easy. Then the salmon finished spawning and the nasty fall cold-front hit. It has been a skunk-fest for the last few weeks. Looking to regroup and change tactics. Should be interesting to see what happens from here up until ice-fishing season. Temperatures look to be <40 from here on out. Did manage these two nice males 10-22 on the pre rapala short wart and magnum wart though. Smaller one was given to the neighbors and the bigger one tasted amazing on the grill. Did also manage to capture both on GoPro, although it looks like I have a scratched lense now. Fish On

Nice steelhead! That's a fish I have yet to have the opportunity to fish for, looks like the fight pretty good. BTW, a bit to the left of you on that same bridge can be a good spot for walleye around June.

Love chasing crappie this time of year about as much as I do bass. Buddy and I picked up over 100 today.
not exactly what I was fishing for but another first. Bank fishing cuz I didn't have time after work to get the boat out. Caught 2 about this size and a couple 2 lb lmb. Man what a fight!
The cold weather months are always fun because everyone gets bunched up in the same areas and you never know what is going to bite next!
That first rainbow is a PIG! Nice fish
Shasta Lake has been producing quite a few Rainbow Trout for me lately, with four rainbows caught the past two trips and a fifth one that broke off at the boat.
My wife also caught an aggressive blue gill using a ned rig which was a first for us.
It was a good weekend for big "other" fish. Monday I had 3 trout over 4 pounds, including a 6.31 and 6.76 pound rainbow off the same spot on the same bait. I'm still not convinced it wasn't the same fish, just not sure how to account for the half a pound it would have had to gain the 5 minutes between catches.
Tuesday I was after wipers and they showed up big time. I caught several, had a giant straighten a 4X strong #4 treble on my jigging spoon, and broke my lake PB twice, first with an 8.22, then a crazy fat 9.04.
A "little" 6.5
The 8.22 that was almost digesting my jigging rap shad.
and the 9.04 that was about as tall as it was long and super thick.

I've never seen one that long that wasn't a DD fish. My 11 was only 26", but our wipers are super fat too. Still, I'd be really surprised if it wasn't over 10.

This one is 8.5 pounds for scale. It was very thick, but still way shorter.

Then Ondrejka's 12 pound monster was 27.5" long. Obviously very fat, but like I said, I'd be shocked if that one wasn't over 10.

Meat run !
Went inshore fishing with my son today in the st augustine area. Very nice day. Fish varieties caught included Redfish, black drum , sheepheads , whiting, grunts , porgies. spots, sharks , puffers , bluefish ,catfish , sailors choice, mangrove , lane snappers and sea bass. We kept 22 fish total for the table, including the two biggest fish ,my son's 24 inch red , and my black drum that was at least 10 pounds, that Was caught on my lightest combo. Caught nearly all the fish on fresh dead shrimp, except the sheepheads were caught on fiddler crabs.
My son had something big pull one of his combos overboard, and he jumped in and was able to grab the rod underwater and get back with it safely.Without catching the fish though.
My wife and kids requested catfish for dinner tonight. I setup drifting for catfish with bacon, within 30 mins after located a good spot, I got one pretty good size (~7lbs).
"HAPPY WIFE HAPPY LIFE"
and happy holidays to y'all.

I forgot I also caught a bass with my bare hand but that will be in bass section. Lol
Caught these last Friday. First crappie I've caught in a couple years and the first I've caught on purpose since I was a kid. Pretty fun jigging docks and fantastic table fare ????
It's been an interesting season on the ice so far for me. I've been out 3 times in the last few weeks and it appears to be getting better each time. Mostly just dink perch and throwback walleye, but the bigger fish are starting to move in. First trip out I only managed 5 perch. Two days ago I got 5 perch again, with four being 9+ inches and one keeper walleye. A buddy invited me to hit the bay again yesterday so I gave it another shot. Managed 5 perch with one being my new PB at 11 inches and then 3 keeper walleyes. Most of the fish I've been getting have just been on the minnow and bobber, but I've been pumped to get a couple walleyes on jigging lures. This guy hit a moonshine jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head. Fishing about 6 feet of murky water on 9-10 inches of ice. Buddy also fought a 36+ inch pike for 10 minutes yesterday before popping off at the hole. Looks to be a great 2018. Fish On.

Nice! Yeah I usually just sit in a portable with a buddy heater since the wind plus the cold can just be straight brutal. Fishing should only be getting better.
How thick does ice need to be for it to be safe to fish on? I grew up in the midalantic and as a kid "DO NOT GO ONTO ICE FOR ANY REASON" was drilled into my head so often that ice fishing still sounds so crazy to me.

Hah, man, in my childhood (ok, some of my adulthood too) of throwing rocks into iced over water, I don't think I have ever seen it over an inch or two here.
About 4 years ago around my place we had an old fashioned true winter, I was out with my son for lakers, and with my power auger I just barely made it through the ice, it has a 48” long auger on it so I guess you could say we were pretty safe to walk there ????
I know I've already posted these catches, but I had some leftover footage of some bobber-takedowns on the Atlantic Salmon this past summer so I figured I'd put it into a video. Something to look forward to this coming summer. Fish On
The initial run is the best. Unstoppable!
Thanks! Definitely. You never know what to expect when you throw your bobber into the turbines.
You have to try centrepinning. It's a blast, though it wouldn't work in the spot from your video.
A pair of jigging spoon flatheads that will make some good dinners for my buddies parents. We caught them one after the other off the same spot, first my spoon got smacked, then his.
I'm still in recovery mode, this flu is killing me, I don't have fever no more but still dizzy when move. Anyway today I feel more energized so went out for a small session today. This might be a good medicine for me caught a carp on pointer 78DD, not sure if it was a snag or carp hit the lure, the hook was on the top lip.
Also caught a small bass on this same lure.
Got a couple crappie today. Water was frozen in a few places. If you guys could keep the ice up north that'd be great......

Had an hour before dark. Went out and caught a few nice bream off the dock.
Nice, cool evening after a COLD few days.
I've been pretty busy with school picking up, but have still been able to make the most out of my weekends. Last week I went out and got a couple perch on the minnow and bobber, a ton of throwback walleye, a throwback pike, a 17 inch walleye, and then lost a monster 3 lb walleye just beneath the hole using a moonshine jigging spoon. It was a pretty good time. Then this past Sunday my dad happened to be walking our dogs down the road and told me there were a couple shanties stacked out near an island only a half mile from our house. I went and checked it out and started sight-fishing a teardrop and waxie for whitefish in about 10 feet of clear water. Using an ice saw I can extend the hole to about 2 feet to make it easier to see. About 20 minutes in and a huge pike rolls up, probably pushing 30 inches. I call up my dad and he brings out my walleye and pike lures with my dead minnows. Shout out to my dad. The pike comes back and takes some hard shots on my #5 Perch foil Jigging Rap tipped with a full minnow. The fish is so finicky though and spits the jig rap out every time I go and set the hook. I head back out again after class Tuesday for a few hours and only see a couple minnows. On Friday I went to the local bait-shop, bought some big sucker minnows and threw them on tipups. I’m jigging a #7 Silver minnow jig rap with minnow when the beast comes back! He charges the jig rap with mouth wide, misses, reloads, comes back and INHALES the bait. I set the hook hard, but he spits it out just in the nick of time again! By this time, I’m feeling frustrated and the tipups never trip once. About an hour later I’m jigging the #7 jig rap again when the fish shows up once more! This time he’s not aggressive and only circles the bait. Keep in mind this is the exact lure he spit out an hour ago. Without hesitation I pick up my #5 Perch jig rap rod with steel leader and minnow and drop it down. The pike comes back with interest but still doesn’t commit. I decide to change it up and start jiggling my rod-tip with fast twitches. It makes it look like the minnow on the treble is having a seizure. The pike spins on a dime, comes up to the lure, fans his fins, and then takes a big bite! Set the hook hard and couldn’t believe he was on! Came out to be a fat 4.67 lber at 28 inches and was only hooked by ONE BARB on the jig rap treble!!! Sight-fishing for pike has to be the most exhilarating kind of ice fishing I’ve ever experienced, and a 10 minute walk away to boot!
Sweet!
First fishes in Minnesota ice fishing after 3 skunked trips
still trying to catch a walleye
Couldn't keep the fish from swallowing my baits yesterday. Wipers were super aggressive and most every one of the 3 dozen I caught had my bait like this.
I had a first also, my first flathead from this lake, on a homemade bladed jig.
Mayan Cichlid. AKA atomic sunfish. They are hard fighters. My area is loaded with them. Supposed to be great eating although I never tried one.
Finally remembered to bring the big shad I froze last month and let some soak while I was fishing for bass. Got on a hot bite on a flat point where I just dropped the motor in the mud and sat there, great chance to let some cut bait sit while I was casting. 3 nice blues and a channel liked the spot too added a 4th blue right at the end of the day on a Keitech.
Got to wonder what these crazy white bass are thinking sometimes?! That's a 190 Plopper, all 7.5" and 2 3/4oz of it.
Did a little offshore fishing this morning. Gorgeous day. Got this grouper and three Spanish mackerel, including a really big one.
...oh, and this massive nurse shark.
Winter steelhead fishing one of the tributaries on the northern Oregon coast.
Not even a good filet.

The wiper was on a trap, walleye was on a Ned.
Nice hybrid gill that got a little too aggressive following my jerkbait.
Caught a few bull whiting with my grandson Tyler yesterday near St Augustine Inlet.
My son ( who does some commercial fishing ) was in the area too, and had caught so many there a few days ago he didnt bother counting them all.
All in all , a good morning, and got Tyler off the video games for awhile.
A perchin we will go
Just going to throw this out there. I've been reading elsewhere about how delicious perch roe is. Deep fried some for the first time this evening in Zataran's. Not what I expected. It was pretty good. Consistency was a little weird but good nonetheless. I've got a lot of it. Not sure that it will keep though.

Intended to go striper fishing but realized while pumping gas that I had cracked my lower unit the day before. Quick change of plans and floated from point a to point b and used trolling motor and paddle. Caught a nice brown trout with a gold spoon

Nice. I pan fried pike roe this past winter and it was crazy because the eggs were popping out of the frying pan like popcorn. The ones that held together tasted like really really really fishy tasting scrambled eggs soaked in fish oil lol. With a lot of salt and pepper though, they were manageable

The perch roe was not fishy at all. I made sure to not break the sac. Dipped them in egg and Zatarans and deep fried them for around 12 minutes on 350* They were off white colored like a baked potato, not brown like your pike roe.
One of my own pond cats. Caught some live craws out of the creek and used them as bait. Not the best picture... I killed it pond side, cut the rakers, and was bleeding it out as I carried it back to the house as I didn't have my phone with me while fishing. About 16" and right at or maybe a little over 2 pounds I estimate:
Fileted and ready for eating!

3lb skipjacks were smashing lures and going crazy last night
My Father and I took a recent saltwater fishing trip to Key West and had a successful trip. The highlight of the trip includes a 45 inch/20 pound barracuda, a 22.5 pound jack crevalle, a 15 pound jack crevalle, a 16 pound yellowtail, and a 15 pound tarpon. The power of these fish is incredible. It took me 25 minutes to land the big jack. Its the biggest one our guide has seen in 7 years.
@gimruis dude that’s a trip of a lifetime!

Skipjack are fun to catch. I never knew they existed until my cousin-in law and I watched some guys fish for them in the tail-waters of the Picwick lake dam. We went out the next day and caught several. Fun stufff!
I have been working on my video gaming skills on a small electric only lake near school. Crappies are out roaming by themselves or in groups of 2/3, you have to be able to position the boat straight over top of them when you spot one, and then read the mood of the fish once you get your bait down in front of it! Super cool stuff, and I'm positive that this will help me out in the future with bass fishing.

Schools out and fishing's on!
Planned ahead and planned a splake fishing pier trip for this morning's downpour. You can pretty much only catch them if its raining/windy/stormy in the short amount of time after ice out before the water warms up. Sunny days = no fish. It's a less than 2 week window after ice-out to catch them from shore.
In the few short hours that it poured, I had a pretty good time. Countless hits, follows, and hook ups. As aggressive as these fish are, it's often difficult to get one in the net. I used everything from husky jerks, spoons, swimbaits, and dead smelt under a bobber.
Was close on a couple occasions, but just couldn't quite connect. Then I helped net a guy's 9 lb splake. Literally 9 lbs!!! We weighed it on his hand scale. This opened my eyes a little. Insead of having the dead smelt sit 6 feet under a bobber, he had a bobber setup, but didn't have a bobber stop on, so his dead-bait would just be laying on bottom. This makes sense becuase splake are very opportunistic with their feeding habits.
Before I could make the switch on my setups, the guy hooks up on another one! I help him land a 4 lb brute and quickly rig my smelt for the bottom.
5 minutes later and one of my rods gets hammered. I pick it up and set the hook, but the fish pops off right away.
When they feel the hooks, they instantly spit the bait out so you have to be quick.
1 hour later and I see my bobber/indicator swimming in circles on the surface going crazy.
I run over and slam the hooks. This time the fish stays on. A guy helps net the 5.25 lb beast just as the trebles pop out. Probably my most beautiful splake yet.
Life is Good.
Got a couple bonus crappie targeting bass with a 1/8 jighead 2.8" fat keaitech
Bass doesn’t open here for a while yet, but pike opened up on the 1st so I took the kid out for a few hours this morning. Water is still quite cold, and with the cloud cover today the big girls weren’t interested in anything, even though we could see them laying around. Need another week or so to get them more active. Did find a few little guys though, enough to get some slime on the boat for the first time this year. Sure was nice to get out and set a hook a few times!
1.5 lb crappie. I pitched my 5" T rigged senko into a bush and she inhales it and starts swimming off. Big girl with a big appetite....
Had a rough trip for bass after picking up my boat from the shop, but calm winds, sunny skies, and super clear water doesn't usually make for good bassing. Lots of little guys, although I did get to see some big cruisers, before I found the mother load of beds right at the end. Not the beds I was looking for, but I grew up chasing gills in creeks and I still enjoy catching them now, and sight fishing for them makes it even more fun.

Time for a break again, been pounding the Walleye on the big river tun for the last 6 week's, culling limits daily. Some day's catching 20 to 30 fish, everything from sucker quilback and buffalo and drum, to walleye small mouth and white bass, even one day when several healthy channels and blue cats lit it up, jig fishing at it's best!
I finally called it a year last Friday. But the freezer is full. 4 and 5 days a week with limits usually averaging 20" and running from 18" to 26" this year. Not big ones running to spots on the rivers not known for hogs, but with the new river rig I built last summer it sure made it nice getting away from the big crowds even though the fish ran smaller, heck were freezer filling not hunt'n fer trophy's, we wanted eaters!
We usually had spots to our self, or maybe 2 or 3 others that were there to fish, not party! I now can say this was my 46th year fishing this big Walleye migration off Lake Erie, and I only pray I can continue doing it for years to come, no better way to spend March and April in these parts! We caught plenty and best of all had a great season!
Biggest yesterday 11" crappie
Today 13" crappie

One of the best ways to understand what's going on in your waters (with the bass) is to fish the bluegill spawn. Spent a couple hours doing that last night and managed about 4 dozen nice gills. Planning on pulling out the fly rod and hitting it again this weekend.
I caught a turtle! He smiled for the camera.

Amazing how versatile the TRD is. Also amazing how it usually hooks them in the side or tip of the mouth in most cases. I have been bit off by pickerel - the toothy critter where I fish, however for the most part, I'm able to land these toothy devils with the TRD and lose very few.
Welcome to the forum, that's a beautiful musky.

Hit Monday late morning after the rain then about the time they started firing up, here come the rain again and shut em down, but got 17 anyway's, 5 of which were perch! This 11 3/4"r was the big boy of the week! a few 9 and 10" but none under 8".
But they are on the beds heavy, I put up 117 this week with limits every day after the 2 weeks of rain ended Monday night.
this weeks efforts, 9.8# scaled and filleted, finally last night ready to bag & freeze. They were all males but 6 or 8, so it's just starting!

Interesting- can you elaborate on what you can learn from fishing the bluegill spawn? I"m up north and bluegill/perch are a primary forage in a lot of lakes here I think and would love to learn more about them and how their behavior relates to the bass.

There is a saying among fisheries people; "Bluegill set the table for the success of most bass lakes."
In smaller (non-shad) lakes and ponds, the size and quantity of the spawning bluegills gives you a good idea about the quality of the bass fishery. Lakes with big spawning gills usually have high populations of smaller bass, with just a few barrier breakers. On the other hand, lots of small spawning gills or hordes of gills in the shallows usually suggests less, but larger bass. Frequently you'll also see this reflected in the skinniness or fatness of the bass you catch. Bass anglers can literally change the dynamics of the fishery in some cases in this regard.
Bluegill also like to spawn on firm bottoms near vegetation, so knowing the areas where they spawn every year can tell you something about the substrate and cover in the area. Bass will often spawn in these same areas but earlier than the bluegills. You can also learn these areas in reverse by observing the vegetation in the area and knowing what bottom type they prefer. In one particular pond I fish, it's easy to pick out all the good spawning areas based on whether the bank has pencil reed along it or cattails.
Additionally, there is a certain portion of the bass population that will hang around the bluegill bedding areas after spawning, picking off smaller stray gills brought into the area during spawning, creating good locations or patterns that bass anglers can exploit. Plus, just sitting in these areas and watching the bass move into and out of these areas gives you a better idea of bass behavior.
These are just a few things that come to mind. Lots of articles online that go into more details on all these specifics if you want to search them out.

I have been stating that forever.
Some of my catches from Tuesday. Full report in my kayak challenge thread.
Probably my craziest from shore catch yet.
I still have no idea how this happened lol. Was fishing with a buddy at one of the local rivers yesterday a little before sunset rip jigging a moonshine shiver minnow, trying for walleyes. I'd caught a lot of atlantics in this spot before but never this early in the year. I was working the shoreline, popping the shiver minnow back to me just off bottom, no big deal. Then I moved over to one spot, pitched it out and 12 feet from the shoreline I felt a hard strike and my rod got ripped down hard. Thankfully I had my net right next to me. I yelled "I got one, it's an Atlantic!" to my buddy but he didn't believe me. I had 15 lb test on so I wasn't worried about breaking off. The fish was barely hooked so I fought him as hard as I could to the net before he could pop off. I got him half netted when he jumped out of the net. I figured the hooks would have got stuck on the mesh and popped out, but somehow they didn't. A few minutes later and I got the miracle catch in the net. Hooks popped out shortly after. I still can't believe it. The fish was Right Ventral clipped so it looks like it was stocked in 2012. 22.5 inches and 3.5 lbs. Not a bug or minnow in its stomach. Of course I later ended up snagging and loosing the exact shiver minnow, but now I have an excuse to buy a bunch more ????

Half the fun of a Ned rig is the accidental catches.
My dad and I got out on Monday to chase some walleye and saugeye. Caught a bunch, just no keepers like he was hoping. I was having fun smacking them on spoons though.
Went out with my tournament partner for a fun day of fishing for some post spawn bass. In the last creek arm that we were fishing that day, we saw a big fish on a bed still. We made a few flips, but scared the fish off. We came back 5-10 minutes later and we could see that the fish was back. I stepped up on the front deck next to my buddy and made one flip and a short hop. Boom, fish on! We thought for certain that it was a 7+ pound largemouth based on the size of the shadow we saw...

About time for them to be spawning, you were probably near it's nesting area. They're very territorial when they have a bedding area and even more so when they have eggs to guard.

Nice catch. Looks a little too big for a tasty meal which isn't a bad thing. Do you ever keep a walleye or two for a nice meal?
Wind was gusting yesterday, so stayed close to shore. Caught just 4 LMB on a senko and spent most of the time having fun with the ultralight setup catching dozens of good sized panfish. Couple pics of one of the many colorful sunnys, as well as a massive crappie caught near the end of the day when wind went down. A bonus was sighting a fawn laying in the high weeds close to water. Was able to paddle my kayak into about 6" of water and zoom in with my little point and shoot camera.

I'm not much of a fish eater except for walleye and bluegill.
The fishing has been great lately. 95% of all the pike I've been catching out of the local bay have been 23 inches or less, but still a fish is a fish. Never get tired of the fight
Quick story on how I got my PB from this bay a few days ago. Not overall PB, just from this bay.
I pull up to my first way-point and the water is glass. This is just screaming for me to throw a topwater. I pitch out a Heddon One Knocker Spook in bone color. First cast and a big pike rolls right next to it, but won't commit. I throw a weightless super fluke as a follow-up bait and he smacks it but doesn't get hooked. I decide that it's time to get serious. If this pike is this aggressive I think I should be able to get him. I throw out an olive X-Rap on a steel leader and jerk it back to me. I start to wonder if he's going to hit it first cast or not. Oh there he is! Just dead-weight on the end. I crank him into the net with little problem. Alright not bad! Came out at 28 inches and 4.25 lbs.
Then last night I wanted to try something new so I went out to the shoreline with a headlamp and netted around 6 sculpin minnows to use as bait for this morning. I threw them out on a 1/8 oz firetiger jighead and almost immediately was met with success. Ended up 4/5 on the jig and sculpins and the one I didn't land snapped me off. Felt good
I caught my 1st and only carp 5.93lbs on May 30th while bass fishing. I was using a lipless crankbait fishing across the top of a submerged brushline when it hit. It slammed the lure pretty hard and dove deep while zigzagging back and forth fought it for a couple of minutes while it pulled my kayak around. i really thought it was going to be my new PB Bass until I got a really good look at it....Guess in the end it's still a PB just the wrong species.
PB Rock Bass. This thing inhaled the jig that I pitched into a laydown.
Big ole Perch I caught while kayaking this Sunday.
First time fishing a Ned rig on straight 20# braided line this weekend as I was too lazy to tie a leader. I felt every tick, bump and nibble. I was getting a lot of bites but came up short on the hooksets. Not at all like a Smallmouth Bass which was what I was targeting. It wasn't until I landed this big guy that I realized it was Perch that were messing around with my rig. Most were small and unable to take the bait in fully to get them hooked.
Absolutely slayed the google-eyes at the City Dump this weekend. Bass, not so much.
Gill's moved off the beds now, but still had a good day to start my grandsons summer vacation, he's primed for the summer now.
Supper over a campfire after hammering out a limit of big O'le gill's has em always want'n to go back to fish camp with grampa,, I love spoil'n em,,,,
St Croix Avid 8' ML/MOD rod, Daiwa RG-AB 2000 spinning reel, 8# Nanofil line, 2.8" Keitech fat paddle tail.
Learning to fly-cast, and this little guy became my first ever fish on the fly. Hit a bluegill popper.
Got more of these in traditional SM areas than ever before!
This lake has a healthy Pike population.
And judging by the 'teeth marks' on the side of this guy (facing me),
At least one mutant pike that tried to EAT this one -
Mental note to self ~ No swimming.

Got a nicely colored rainbow this morning. First rainbow in years. Normally mostly browns in this river, but occasionally it will give up a ‘bow or a brookie.
Went out for a troll on Georgian Bay this morning with the family, slow start, didn’t get fishing till 11:00 and only fished an hour before the heat drove us off the water, but we did alright. My son fought this one in all by himself. 10lbs even on my light rainbow gear, almost spooled him twice! Looks like we’re bbqing salmon for dinner tonight ????????
Toothy creatures. Sauger was 1/2 inch short (I think...) but The walleye was a keeper!
Took a quick morning fishing trip on Father's Day. Smallmouth Bass were gone at my local shore spots but the Bluegill were bedding. I used a Leland Trout Slayer jig dragged onto their beds to get them going. When they picked up the jig to remove it from the bed I set the hook and reeled them in.

This one saved me from the skunk today. Luckily for me I planned ahead and picked up some crawlers yesterday as my day off sadly landed on the 1st clear blue sky day of our next heatwave. Sadly no luck with the bass today.
Guess I should have weighed it and measured it. The hook was stuck in the roof of it's mouth and took longer than anticipated to get out and I wanted to get it back into the water. Figure it was around a pound or so. Never fish for them so I guess it would be a PB of unknown weight.
The river by my house is low, which means the gar are thick. They're fun to fight, so I go target them with rope lures and cut bait. This is an average one about 3'
This crazy channel cat exploded on a piece of cut bluegill as soon as it touched the water, I thought for sure it was going to be a big wiper.
Accidental tiger muskie when I was bass fishing yesterday morning. Smoked a buzz bait in 8 feet of water. I initially thought it was a pike. Measured 33 inches, and released fully alive.
Had some more success on the stream after work this past Friday. Here's a quick snipnet.
I get to the spot where I last caught a brook trout. It's really shallow and I wonder how on earth I caught a fish from here. I pitch out my spinner a few times and nothing hits. Alright time to move a little further downstream.
I round a bend and my eyes light up like it's Christmas.
Right in front of me is about a 25 foot long cleared off stretch of stream that is perfect for casting into and the stream runs tight across an undercut bank with a tree bulging out of the water. It looks like the deeper portion will be at least 4.5-5 feet deep. This should house a couple big brook trout.
I wade into a position where I can cast from and wait for the mud clouds to settle.
After a little bit, I fire off a cast and watch as a big brook trout comes up from under the bank, slaps my spinner and darts back under the bank!
I throw the spinner right back and then something truly remarkable happens. I got it all on GoPro so I'm hoping the footage turns out.
The big brook trout comes up to the spinner and slams it but somehow is barely hooked so he pops off right away and as he pops off he jumps out of the water and lunges for the spinner!
He misses it so I reel it back in and know what cast number three will yield
FISH ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's the brute!!!!
He's going crazy and is barely lip hooked!
I get him in close and flip him onto the bank. Yes! My new Personal Best Brook Trout at 12.5 inches long (at the time haha) Alright!! That undercut turned out to have 5 brook trout stacked under it. Craziness!
I caught my eighth species for the year this weekend. A Fallfish. Fought like a demon on a light action rod.

The first time I caught a fallfish I thought I caught a shiner until I heard it grunt. Dead giveaway right there. Also the fact that there were no shiners in the river I was fishing at.

Those look like they would be awesome flathead bait, like a huge creek chub.

That's wild! I have never seen one in spawning colors, thanks for the pic!
The prettiest little fish we have in Kansas, a male longear sunfish in full blown spawning colors from a little creek.

Took the boat out to one of the local bays to try and get some pike and at first it really was a struggle. After a solid hour and a half of covering all of my waypoints I could only manage a 20-22 inch to follow. Then as I moved along the shoreline of the other side of the bay I started seeing signs of life.
Forage, and plenty of it. Probably 1-2 inches long. Some little perch were darting up and grabbing the minnows. Little perch = big pike close by.
I started working the shoreline that was stacked with bait and out of nowhere something big slams my golden little cleo. It looks like a muskie just at first glance, but turns out to be just one of the biggest pike in the bay! A fat 5 lber.
I slide her back in the water and then get a large pike that charges my olive x-rap back to the boat. I mark the spot and keep fishing around it, working the deeper edge. Takes like 30 minutes, but then I get one to commit. Solid 3.5 lber. Great morning all around.

Caught just 4 LMB on a senko and spent most of the time having fun with the ultralight setup catching dozens of good sized panfish. Was able to paddle my kayak into about 6" of water and zoom in with my little point and shoot camera.
I held an ultra-light rod for the first time yesterday when I was in Cabela's. Dang, that thing is light. I really want to try fishing with one of those sometime. I've heard they make bluegill feel like tarpon. ????

For years I have used an Okuma SST 6'6" ultra - light with a small Plueger 20 size reel. Not an expensive rod (I think about $49 at DSG), but have landed most everything with it - trout, bass, northerns, pickerel and of course all types of panfish. I usually use just 4 or 6# test floro or mono line. For panfish, I use a 1/16 oz. VMC moon eye jig along with a curly tail grub; the one pictured was a Strike King 2" grub Tuxedo Black/Chartreuse. Using that size bait keeps the real little panfish off and allows for just hooking the larger ones, as well as interesting a larger species if it's in the area and feeding.
Yes, you are correct - it does make catching the smaller ones a lot more fun.
You should consider getting an ultralight set up; it is especially good when the bass aren't hitting and you just want to not be frustrated and have fun. When the bass are shut down; I have caught several dozen panfish and have been surprised along the way by pickerel, pike and bass.
Edit: I ran into John, who is a super nice guy and great to meet in person (see below) last week and showed him what I was using. Also, I will add this tip: to make the jig easier to use - (this also applies to the TRD jig head as well) - take your needle nose pliers and squeeze down the metal bait keeper that is sticking out below the jig head. Squeeze this down so it is flush/parallel with the hook shaft. This will help to not tear up your plastic, so will make it last longer and will still be enough to keep the plastic attached well to the hook.

I actually got to hold this setup in person, after running into Rich at the launch last Friday afternoon. It's crisp, light as a feather. Thinking I might get back into some UL fishing for days when it's tough for bass.

Yeah, I'm about to buy a ML Dobyns Fury for finesse fishing, so I probably won't get an UL yet, but I want to get one sometime. Imagine hooking a good sized bass on one of those things. ????
Fished my pond this evening just before a big storm front moved in. Caught two nice catfish that were harvested for the fry pan. First was a channel cat around 18", then a few minutes later I got this nice fat boy. I had to measure it cause it might be my PB catfish. Pretty sure it's one of our old blue cats we thought had died out/been fished out. It hit that hotdog so hard it slid all the way up my 10 lb. fluorocarbon leader and got stuck onto the swivel (my exact set up is a secret, sorry). It ran 4-5 times across my pond, doing it's darndest to spool my spinning reel. I love the sound of my reel drag screaming, I know you can all relate to that! In the end I wore it down, netted it, and pulled it onto the bank in victory. 22" (although it moved before I took the pic and it's head went up farther, so it was a little over 22") and easily 3.5 lbs.

That's a channel cat for sure. Blues have a straight anal fin, channels are rounded like your fish. It is a nice channel cat though
Got one of the bigger and harder catches out of the way for my multispecies kayak challenge yesterday. I sat and stillfished corn and crawlers for 3 hours and caught nothing but channel cats. As I was moving to my next spot I decided to let the wind push me down a shallow flat and look for cruisers. First one I saw I made a perfect cast with a tiny #8 gamakatsu octopus hook with a few corn kernels and it was all over them. Had to drop anchor and fight it as I was getting pushed to some trees and I sure didn't want to lose it. Was hoping for a little bigger one, but I'm banking on a lot of guys not even messing with fishing for them in the competition.
Ah yeah you're right I overlooked the fin. Ones we had before were flat in the back, remember that now. The coloring on it threw me off. Normally mine have spots and a flatter head. This one was a little oddly colored and shaped. Then again I also have albinos in the pond too, so big gene pool there flying around.

There's actually at least 1 lake in Kansas with hybrid blue/channels, but I don't think they're naturally occurring. The coloration and potbelly is more that of a blue than a channel. It would be nearly impossible to tell without genetic testing if it was a hybrid though.

Interesting. Its very possible I could have some hybrids. Pond has held catfish for over 40 years. Can't see it in the picture but thos cat had a lot of red on the fins. I've never seen that before on my cats. I have no idea what caused that.
Hit the stream early yesterday morning for some Independence Day brookies. The area I was fishing was mustly just mud and clay with hardly any riffles so was surprised to do quite well. Panther martin struck gold at one spot with a nice 12.5 incher coming from this open muddy stretch.
Caught a 100 pounder my new pb

Little after work creek fishing. That Yo-Zuri Snap Bean catches everything (almost caught a bullhead with it this morning even). The little Longear were spawning and super aggressive. They don't get much prettier than this.

light line is key, nothing heavier than 4lb, 2 is best for me. Kind of scary throwing a $6 bait on 2lb line though.
Nice channel cat that got in the way yesterday. Thought at first it was a walleye when I initially saw the light colored flash in the water - lol. Absolutely ate a jigging spoon. Could barely reach the hooks with the long nose pliers.
Can't handle the summer humidity, heat and lack of breeze lately. Even my sunset bassing visits to local ponds have now become sweaty and buggy affairs rewarded with merely a dink or two. My daughter and son-in-law convinced me to join them on a local drift boat for an evening trip offshore. You pay $45 pp and includes tackle, sardines for bait, and a mate to help. It ended up being a blast. When the kingfish bite was on it was mayhem. I caught the first fish, a monster kingfish, and ended up winning the pool. This king yielded enough superb sashimi for 30 people.
Couple kittys from today
The flatheads wanted to be bass Friday. 6XD, Z-Craw, and YoMomma. Just babies but they were fun.
Been awhile since I caught one of these guys. Didn't miss the smelly slimy mess at all. It was fun to catch though. The water was as calm as glass and I was able to see him shoot up from the depths to slam my Strike King Red Eye Shad crankbait. He was as long as my arm and weighed in at almost a pound and a half.
The pike fishing here has been fairly easy for the most part. It's just hiking to the fishing spots that can be the challenging part. Explored a small lake from the shoreline and found some success casting across some of the back bays. Nailed a 25 inch right away on the X-Rap in olive green. Worked my way to the next bay and got crushed by this fat 29 incher.
Few days later I went back to my frog spot at around 7 PM and realized how special of a spot it really is. I think I've figured it out. So basically the river flows through the area but it reaches a spot where it widens quite a bit. Off to the side on one of the wide areas is a flat full of lilly pads that is on a ledge right next to a deep portion of the river. I've fished it in broad daylight and just never have had success on it. But fish it from 7-9 PM and hold on! When the evening comes and the day cools off, the pike must come from the deeper water and sit in the lilly pads. Anywho I got to the spot and in an additional two days straight of fishing it on top of when I went the first time, I got something crazy like 25 pike blowups on the frog! Insane! My landing percentage was crappy as I only got three to shore but was heck of a lot of fun. The first night I got these two big girls and the second night was just a 22 inch dink. The first one went 30.5 inches and the 2nd one went 29 inches. I kid you not I was packing up and starting to leave the area when I decided to pitch out one more final cast and that's when the 29 inch smoked the pad crasher. Love the fishing here, just wish there'd be more trout/salmon. Oh also a crap ton of reindeer running around.

Reindeer? You live in the UP right?
Super aggressive Redbreast Sunfish took a swipe at my Whopper Plopper 90
If I am incorrect in my identification that this is a Redbreast Sunfish please let me know. They are one of the more colorful fish I catch out of the Hudson.
That actually looks like a long ear sunfish.

Taking a gap year in Finland at the moment working at a National Park Research Station. Up near the Arctic Circle and 4 miles from the Russian Border! See probably on average 10-15 reindeer a day, but have seen as many as 30. The only downside is that they leave behind turd minefields haha. Just have to watch where you step. This sign is posted at my work.

They're impossible to take a good picture of by yourself it seems like unless you set a camera up with a timer, which is tough in a kayak
Had a guide trip Friday, mostly for bass and wipers, but the youngest of the 3 generations of men had never caught many catfish and none much larger than a pound and was really interested in catching one when I mentioned how easily we could catch them. When dad and grandpa were ready to go I asked for 5 minutes to get the boy his catfish, I don't think we used half that time. Bass fishing for catfish with a chunk of gizzard shad, weightless with a 1/0 kahle hook, it never touched bottom and it took off and hit the end of the line so hard I'm pretty sure it hooked itself. He wasn't ready to go after that.
I planned to torture myself with Dropshot rig on a pockets of weed today. Got there a little late 6:45AM and saw a whole bunch of water boiling. I took a closer look and carp everywhere roaming around shallow and deep. I walked to my usual spot, 2nd cast felt a bite, set hook and line started screaming out of my reel. I said to myself "oh **** carp hit me again" and this area is weed everywhere. I let him pull the line but try to get him to stay on surface as mush as possible, finally got him in with another carp swimming around him very close to my feet. I moved after that since I don't plan to fight with crap in those weedy area and I know for sure carp will hit my lure again. This was on Zman zinkerz anyway.
At 2nd spot I got nothing and still saw some carp boiling up, I think those greenie water bugs laying egg or something?
Got a free offshore fishing trip from my job.
It was the second least productive day Ive had offshore fishing but it was still fun. One of my co-workers ( the one next to me ) was seasick all day and never put a line in the water so my day was great compared to his.
Nice mixed bag today from a local reservoir. Besides a dozen green fish, I found a big school of white bass willing to eat along with a bonus walleye. Sat on that group for about an hour and caught a bunch before resuming my chase for bass.
Biggest fish to ever come into my boat, although I didn’t catch it
Tried for some salmon on Georgian Bay this morning, didn’t stay out too long due to the ridiculous heat and not a bit of wind, but my son did manage one nice fat laker about 10lbs or so.

Flathead on a crankbait yesterday. My by catch game is taking off. RIP to my Bomber Square A in brown/chartreuse that I caught the cat with. Fell victim to a cast net someone got snagged and left behind. Pretty sure that color is discontinued and I can only find in store at Walmart but it catches fish so time to hunt for more.

I'll apologized in advance for burning your retina but this juvenile Musky is The First One I've caught here. The lake used to have a quite a population back in the day. Recently (a few years ago) DNR began a re-stocking program.
Looks like it's working ! This specimen was fat, very healthy and quite a surprise when it rocketed 3 feet in the air next to the boat. Seems a few years from now I may have a legitimate Musky lake very close by - I'm a fan.

Left the green fish alone and went after crappie with a good friend on Thursday. Kids back in school and a weekday made the lake pretty enjoyable. Catching just over 300 crappie didn't hurt anything, either. They were grouped up pretty good though as you can tell in the second picture.

First eye I've caught in quite a while this year, on a Duo Rozante 77 jerkbait in 5' of water mixed in with a bunch of smallies.
spent the morning dragging a baby brush hog around weed edges on a local City lake.
caught several largemouth, then this pig hammered the brush hog.

24 inches long 7lb. 4oz.

Friends and I had great fun loading the boat with these speckled trout near Titusville a couple of weeks ago. All were over 15". Later, we loaded our stomachs with yummy pan fried trout filets!
It’s been a tough fluke season for me in NJ. I’ve been catching tons of shorts and some have been painfully close. It was nice to unexpectedly run into some bluefish and stripers first thing in the morning but I could not manage a fluke for the dinner table once again. Awesome day on the water nonetheless.
Spent the afternoon chasing crappie yesterday...caught 'em pretty good.
My buddy Steve invite me to do some river fishing today and we did pretty good. Between the two of us we caught about 60 white crappie and 3 small stripers.

Top fish looks like a white perch?
Thought I caught a rock, would have rather it been a rock.
It is a perch. I have no idea why I put crappie. I'm not a fish expert.

Me neither, and I've never seen a white perch in person, but I've always heard they look like a small white bass without the stripes.
they are a fun little fish to catch. they don't bite hard but put up a pretty good fight.

Probably not, this was at Melvern, you guys were on Milford. They do love a jerkbait at Milford though, all but one of these were on a Nishiki 78 pointer.
Our end of the year tournament is on Milford next month, wouldn't mind getting into a few of them then.
Another toothy critter, same lake and same bait as the last one. @gardnerjigman was so fish hungry I was afraid I might see him gnawing on it in the back of the boat like a giant raccoon at some point in the day. Thankfully it made it all the way home before consumption.
Poor fella never had a chance.

Didn't end up fishing at all out there, not even with my buddy in Hampton Lake. Wife's grandfather got diagnosed with cancer so we spent as much time with him as possible.
Haven't caught a fish from my pond all summer (not that I've tried hard, but still). Was filling my deer feeder and setting my stand up so I made a few cast with a little plopper and actually had 3 bites but of course this was the only one that hooked up.
I made my last trips on the kayak for fluke this past weekend. The season closes on Sept 22nd and I won’t be able to get out on the yak for one last shot at them because of work. A lot of shorts and a couple more fish which were close but swam off to live another day. Also, some sea robins mixed in. A school of 3-5 bluefish made the day more noteworthy. Went through a couple bags of pink zoom flukes and broke off atleast half a dozen jigs. Nonstop action at one spot, which we left after our arms couldn’t take anymore lol. Goodbye to summer, and hello fall! I’m ready for stripers and Tog.
I thought I posted this weeks ago, but I guess not;
My new PB snakehead at 5.98lbs, which I am just going to call 6lbs from now on. @Junger was nice enough to take me out on his boat again and I got it on a frog cast to up next to a beaver lodge. It was a crazy soft hit, I think Junger noticed it before I did, the frog was just there one moment, gone the next.

LOL, thanks! This particular inlet has been loaded with bait the past few weeks, so the fish are definitely in an aggressive, feeding mood. If only my whole summer was this action-packed.
Caught these amongst some black bass schooling on minnows . It was a light bite that You had to set immediately on
spent the day bass fishing at a local power plant lake. caught 5 bass in the 1 to 3 lb range.
these 2 fish were the highlight of the day. caught both on a shakyhead.
1 was 11.5 lbs. the other was 9.25 lbs.
while not the target species, I never complain about hooking a large flathead.
Walleye with some bacon wrapped around it.
It's that wonderful time of year when the water is cooling, the shad are moving shallow, and every fish in the lake is following them. Never know what the next cast might be. I had good variety this weekend. There was also several drum that are not pictured.

Sadly, harder than anything else I hooked all day, excepting one smallie that threw the hook when I reached for the net. At least I landed the clam ????
I caught this footlong Yellow Perch and the slightly smaller one last weekend. I landed one with a simple worm, bobber, and double split shot rig. It was hard to bring in. The fish wasn't aggressive—it just keep nibbling at the bottom of the worm, moving the bobber ever so slowly. I managed to tease it with the right reeling motion, set the hook, and brought the prize home. The other I caught while trolling with a Rebel Crickhopper crankbait.
Let's hear it for New York State's Fisheries!
Few by-products again from a spinnerbait
Our poor confused catfish are trying really hard to be bass right now.
Took my neighbor out for a fish this morning. We managed about 20 bass, no real big ones, but did get into a few decent pike. Water temps are just about right to find some big ones here now, today it was 55 deg.
Heres a couple of the neighbors better fish he got, none of the ones I got were worthy of a pic.

Fall fishing at the canal and it was a great multi-species day. I was fishing with a light action Kastking Calamus rod paired with a Lew's Mach II size 100 reel. All these fish were caught with Berkley Atomic Tubes in Grasshopper color.
Redbreast Sunfish
Fallfish
Rock Bass
Thought this sauger was a catfish in the dark
Regret not taking a picture, but hooked into what appeared to be the top section of an aged 3 piece rod. Had a ripstop snagged in the top eye and 10 ft of line attached that was removed before being released to a trashcan.
Was holding in about 10ft of water and took a maxscent creature hawg.
Someone had a bad day.
Took to Marsh Creek PA the other day to get on some LMB's. Was throwing out my Mega Bass Pop Max and this monster took it. Was on my kayak so it was a real crazy few minutes fighting her and trying to get her in my net. I knew how easily bendable the poppers trebles were so the whole time I was saying to myself that shes going to pop off at any moment. She was pulling so hard that my kayak was all over the place. Finally somehow I managed her to swim into the net.
A couple of guys boated by and it turns out they and their club members have been stocking pure bred muskies in the area for the last 10 years and told me that this was in the 50" range and very close to 10 years old.
Nice fish, GREAT pic!
spent 3 hours chasing Largemouths and only caught 5 dinks. pulled into a rocky cove and saw a bunch of commotion in the shallows. Threw a squarebill near shore and immediately hooked a white bass. switched over to a ratl trap and caught white bass non stop for nearly 2 hours. they were all in 1-2 foot of water.
I lost count after 100, but got bit nearly every cast. spent just as much time unhooking fish as I did fishing.
They were all in the 1 to 2 lb range, except for the first pic. It was 18.5 inches long and weighed just shy of 3 pounds. pretty sure it was a wiper.

Got to get out for a lil while today. Cool and damp. Caught a couple green fish too. Nothing big just checking to see if they are where they should be this time of year.

Slightly turbid. The local Trout Unlimited's work shoring up the banks with large boulders and planting trees to keep erosion at bay means mostly clear water year round. They do great work. Real problem is the leafs. Everywhere the water slowed or made an eddy tons of leafs piled up and I couldn't get my spinner through without snagging a couple. All in all I was happy to catch the 2 I did enjoy reliving some of my youth.
Sometimes you wish you had a pool skimmer out there.......

Caught a dinner for my wife on my crappies pole. Too bad I only brought with me just that set up. A nice fun fight with UL rod, but gotta find better hook for these Tiny Fluke.
Multispecies day Friday. Also had a walleye, some wiper, and some drum that weren't photographed.
When I launched the boat this morning, air temp was 32 and water temp was 41.
I was not expecting a lot of action.
surprisingly I manged to catch a couple dozen 1 to 2 pound bass on a Jerkbait, a dropshot, and ned rig.
Bass were not the only thing biting today. these three chunks gave my ned rig rod a workout.

I saved a couple this summer for my neighbor. He said they taste like redfish. I had to clean the live well afterwards. They leave a pretty strong stink.
I thought bass fishing is hard, it even d**n harder fishing for crappies. I have to fish super slow and the bite is super soft just one super tiny tab and it is gone. As of now I only fish double rig(dropshot) to learn how to feel the bite. I wish spring is coming soon and I might even skip pre-spawn bass this year. Anyway today only caught two from shore, still small not slabs.

Good looking fish. I have always heard they don’t fight well but I can remember 2 or 3 that fought me like the devil. One was this summer trolling , surface temp was 82 and a 20” walleye slammed a crank and fought like a 5 lb smallmouth
The panfish bite has been pretty decent lately, the current is raging so any slower water has fish all in it . Water temp 53-56

20"+ is where they start to put some weight on and get some muscle. I just enjoy their signature fight that tells you its a walleye. They stay down deep and somehow pump the rod, definitely no long runs like a pike or aerial display like a bass.

We catch a lot of them out of the Kansas River and Missouri river, both are very muddy and polluted. They do tend to be picky about what they eat, until they decide to eat.
Too cold to fool with launching a boat after work, got one bank fishing. Much better than watching espn from 4:30-6
Went out for catfish/crappies drifting for a few hours since my wife demanded me some catfish for next weekend-get together. The water is so muddy from the rain we got a few days back and a lot of floating debris. I managed to catch two good size catfish 4-5 lbs with my special bacon recipe but NADA for crappies.

They make great flathead bait at that size. I've even caught walleye on them bottom fishing them live for flathead.
One little pike in 6 hours of fishing...

I usually try to go on a few Tog headboat trips in the winter time to scratch the fishing itch. Managed to catch a couple keepers last time out. It has been a pretty picky bite this season. I’ve seen reports of lots of double digit fish but the numbers seem to be trending down this season. Hopefully that’s just due to the funky weather we’ve had this winter.

On my last guide trip, my client caught a channel cat on a Strike King KVD 300 jerkbait that was only about twice as long as the jerkbait. They're way more predatory than most people think.
Caught a catfish with a hair jig that I tied this week. I did have a live shad on the back of it though! Haha. We got several other cats just like that bobber fishing the shad around Marina's . The water was 20+ ft deep and the catfish were biting 4-5 ft under the surface

They definitely are. They have extremely well tuned senses that are geared for predatory actions. I've caught them on crankbaits before, but this was the first jerk-style bait I've caught one on. It was a lot of fun actually.
Had a couple hours free this morning, decided to do some drywall demolition down at my family’s lake house (hopefully my forever home). Took some casts off the dock and got 4 crappie! Even got one with a bobber, which is sometimes impossible for me. I had to try it because after I got the first 3 I just kept losing hooks in brush
Finally somewhat success, I know now why some of you like fishing for crappies. Today decided to try for crappies again after a month long of laying down crappie’s pole.
I brought just one lure with me, roadrunner 1/8oz with baby shad, since I don’t plan to stay very long. A frist few cast I tried fan casting, reel fast and fish between water column. Until I tried to slow down and hug the bottom by letting the roadrunner sink to bottom every few cranks. Got a small tab, didn’t even think I got a fish until started reeling in. Finally a 12” crappie on the line. I tried to duplicate how I caught the first one and cast to same area. It is a little difficult since my reel is 7.2 gear ratio but I made it. I caught total 5-6 crappies with in 10 mins until the last one got my #10lb braid between rock and broke off (of course he felt bigger than other not sure if it was bass or crappie).
Now what do I do fish for bass or crappies, very difficult decision to make.

Crappies are great. Never hurts to have them as a backup in case the bass bite is slow, or you just feel like doing something different for a change. Nice job.
@JustJames nice combo (Roadrunner and Baby Shad) you might not meet a deadlier crappie lure than that my friend. Keep the reports coming!
We had heavy rain all day yesterday so I decided to fish underneath the boat slip. I set out some rods with nightcrawlers and tossed a crappie jig around. I caught a small drum with the worms and a bigger one with the jig, go figure. I also lost several fish on the bigger set rods, bait and wait is trickier than I remember . Bluegill and crappie nowhere to be found

Time for a catch and cook!
Had a warm day with 46 degree high temp. Got the boat out about after work about 5 pm, fished til 6:15 when it was pretty cold and dark. Slow ride back to the launch in the cold darkness at 5 mph haha. We got countless white bass, some were even chasing shad on top
Been so busy this fall/winter I really haven’t fished. Dumped my ice shack out the other day, and got to use it last night. Slower than I expected, but got this chubby little salmon to cook up. 1st fish of 2019, 11pm right off the bottom in 10’ water. Targeting rainbows and burbot. Very pleasant surprise as these aren’t nearly as common in this lake and I’ve never seen one at night.
Had a little more drywall
to tear out and look at some toilet parts at the lake house. Why not put out some set lines??? Got a snow cat

You are correct sir. It was loaded with eggs, now it's vacuum sealed and frozen! Everything was hitting a rattle trap on the fall, even the drum
Striped bass drum and white bass, water temp 48 muddy and flooded. 63,000 cfs
Not quite sure how this works, if it's grandnephew or great-nephew but anyway he's my niece's son Rivers Vallier.
To put the picture in perspective Rivers is 6' tall!
That's a fish!
Ventured out to Sebago Lake yesterday afternoon for some laker fishing. Got a couple little guys.
Someone’s stoked on her first laker ever!;
I caught my smallest laker ever;????♂️
We are encouraged to to keep the small ones in this lake because of overpopulation.
I think what I captured is a good icthyology lesson. White bass on top hybrid on bottom

Sweet fish buddy.
First time ever targeting lake trout. Had a blast even though the fishing was pretty slow. Caught my first ever laker on a ned rig and the second one hit a keitech barely bounced on the bottom. 5 fish stringer between the 2 of us. It was pretty cold and a little windy on the water but I had to get out and fish. Spring is taking too long to get here lol.
Biggest rainbow I ever caught....3.17 pounds!!!
For those who have never seen one, the "Oh So Elusive...GOLDEN TROUT!"
My new PB pond catfish, caught about a week and a half ago. Strangely, caught on a small piece of shrimp! Kept, since it was a male. Right at 24.5 on the tape measure but it was closer to 25 when I actually got it to way still enough to not mess up measurements.
Has been a slow year for those "other" fish, not Friday. First cast of the day, shook my Ned rig about 3 times before a Goo thumped it. Caught 1 on a jig and one on a jerkbait too. Also had a first with a carp that actually ate my jerkbait, took off with it on the pause and was hooked inside the mouth. Had visions of state record smallmouth for a minute.
Some bluegill I have caught this year. I have had several caught about the size of those. In fact, I got about 18 bluegill yesterday up around 8-8.5 inches.

Wow I've never seen one of those!
Well the whole "slow year for other fish", has officially gone out the window after this week. Caught a ton of white bass and some huge drum I didn't take pictures of too. Everyone was released safely back to the lake.

You nailed it, the toothy ones are all saugeye except the bottom one which is a regular walleye.
