OK, it's time to start planning for the next outing. The consensus was that we hit Mashpee/Wakeby on the Cape. It has both largemouth and smallmouth bass. I must confess, this pond has not been kind to me. I've tried it a few times and worked hard to catch a few mediocre fish, though I did catch a decent rainbow on a dropshot rig.
But, it is a nice pond with plenty of structure and in places, vegetation. Not huge, but maybe a tad larger than Whitehall. Nice ramp and parking facility.
Here's the deal. Before Labor Day, we'd have to get there earlier on a Saturday or Sunday than we did at Whitehall. It's a popular place, but large enough to accomodate the pleasure boaters, skiers and fishermen.
Who's interested? Time for your input.
I'm all for trying that lake but my only concern is how busy it will be on the cape this time of year, mostly non fishers too...but the location does work for everybody. Either way I'm there no matter how early.
I am definitely in once again and August is a fairly easy month for me to fit it in to. I also have no problem with an earlier start.
Well I hate to bring common sense into this but the way it looks to me is that after Labor Day the pressure may be off the watersports and the smallmouth may be starting their fall feeding. Maybe someone can check the tournament schedule first.
I should be able to make it most any time though.
More people...more boaters please. Anyone...anyone...
Hey photographer...can you make it this time?
i go back to school to start RA training on august 17th so i wont be able to make this one. =/
from the mass.gov site. and I have a camera I can bring

You better go...it's my turn to fish with you.

Sign me up. Teach me the ways of the force.....
or just how to be a better fisherman...either way..
Or the ways of the Heron...
On 7/28/2011 at 2:42 AM, tate said:The Heron is fishing with me ... he has technique like no other.....doesn't even use a dang lure.
Says a lot about Grundle's personality also...haha!
I have a pretty open week next week (August 01-thru-06) anyone else available for getting a lure or two wet? I can do anytime and any place.
Actually I MAY be able to do something the 6th. Let me know, if anything maybe if gramps is down, let me take another swing at Whitetail. But I am down for anything.
Also, I can NOT do anything the weekend AFTER labor day. The Saturday, it is out company's golf outing.
I would like to join a 'get together' at Mashpee-Wakeby if it happens. I am just a little leery of that place between Memorial and Labor. If it does happen I would be happy to supply some grub.
You would be a welcome addition...
Please keep an eye on the post...

Can we start the date selection process...then we can see who can make it...
How about Saturday Sept. 17...anyone...anyone...anyone...
That's good for me.
Seems a ways away, wouldn't mind doing something before then
I cannot figure out Mashpee/Wakeby. It has not been kind to me. The other day I caught my first decent fish from that pond in at least a half dozen ventures at fishing it. I did lose another nice bass, and what I assume was a good pickerel. Never saw it, but it pulled really hard, then the typical "tick" of the line parting when severed by the toothy critters.
I did learn a few things, thanks to Gramps, and anticipate better days on M/W. Would be nice to have a boater or two join us. I can/will bring my canoe with trolling motor, batteries, and fish finder if needed. It has comfortable, padded swivel seats with backs. Plenty roomy for two with gear and coolers. You'll need to plan on bringing your own pfds.
Wanna do something earlier in August? Fine by me. Pick a time and place. I'd opt for Great Herring, but parking would be impossible on any weekend before Labor Day.
May be going to Wallum tomorrow, and Tate really likes it, so that's an option. Plus, it has smallies which some have yet to catch. Wallum looks good on the map. Lots of structure with a maximum depth of 78 feet.
What about the Nip in Bridgewater? I've heard through the grapevine the fishing's been getting better there. Good ramp and parking, right off 495, and doesn't usually get crazy jammed with boaters.
This has nothing to do with the fact its a mile from my house bwahahah
anyone doing anything this Sat that i can tag along with? Let me know
p.s. Jones your anaconda landed me a fish last weekend. thanks
Nippennicket? Not for me thank you. I tried it a couple of years ago from my canoe. Didn't even get a nibble. Plus, most of the pond is three feet deep or less, hardly suited for bass boats. I wouldn't run mine in there.
I went all over the pond, from north to south and east to west. It may have just been a poor day, but it turned me off.
Lake Sabbatia would be a better alternative, though someone said the place is a mess. Not sure how they meant it. I know it has a lot of coontail and other vegetation, but I've caught fish the three times I tried it, and that was in my paddling canoe.

still out of comission as of right now. title issues....
Gramps date works for me and I would be up for something in the meanwhile.
I have had the distinguished pleasure of being completely out fished by two fine gentlemen this week and I would like to thank you Gramps and Rhino for two great days out on the water. I enjoyed the fishing and learned plenty, including adding about 8-10ft to my baitcasting distance (thank you Gramps)
Unfortunately, I only have one picture from the two days but I think it speaks for itself.
This Saturday if anyone wants to do something let me know
So what got accomplished while I was gone? Where are we going and when? C'mon guys. Oh by the way if any ladies care to join the festivities.....

See...now we're gettin' someplace...Sept 17 Mashpee Wakeby is also my vote.
17th @ Mashpee Wakeby sounds good to me!
OK for me.
What's up? I know it's about four weeks away, but it's time to start planning. Who's in? Who's not? Who's on the fence?
As of right now, my fishing partner and I are in and will help supply some grub. The only thing that would stop me is if I'm offered overtime from work. I can't turn down money.
I'll come play again if someone has an open seat
I have a seat. Can fish three in a pinch if necessary. And, I can bring my canoe with trolling motor and depthfinder. Fishes two comfortably.
I'm in. Same deal as last time if theres a seat. If someone who is not a boater wants to go I will give up my spot to them because I am such a nice guy. As for grub, i will DEF be bringing some. Possibly my signature marinated steak tips.
I'm out, but good luck on the 17th. Post some pics so I know how much fun I missed out on
Grundle if you're packin' steak tips then I would be honored if you rode with me.

I will be there. Already experimenting with my marinade. Trying to combine honey with crushed red pepper, and some other spices. So far i have gotten rave reviews. You think brown sugar cinnamon BBQ marinade caramelizes good when grilled? You obv never have had honey. I was so pleased.
I am still in, sorry been away and real busy. Haven't had time in front of the computer to post. Let me know what I should bring other than my "non-skunk" karma.
That sounds good Tate I know right where that is. 5:45 I'll be there. Do you have a spare vest? I don't have one.
Anybody need me to bring anything else? I don't want to show up empty handed so maybe some pasta salad and some chips or whatever?
I'll be there whenever told, early is fine. Its far from me so already planned on waking up at 4 anyway
630-7 is cool with me
How about it Diablos...are you fishing or working...if you are coming...are you bringing someone or do you need a non-boater...
7am...

OK guys, time for a final check to confirm who's coming. I know Gramp, Tate and I will be there. There's a possibility we might all meet at the Park and Ride lot at exit 2 on route 25. The exit is a 1 and 3/4 miles (approx) past exit 1, which is the junction of 195 and 495.
Let's hear from everyone so we are all on the same page.
Gramps and I went there yesterday. Had a good day. Not big numbers, but a few notable fish. Two smallmouths in the vicinity of four pounds, two largemouth, about the same, and four pickerel that easily topped three pounds. There were other respectable fish caught as well, but nothing to brag about. A few largemouths and smallmouths in the neighborhood of two pounds. A nice neighborhood to be sure, but not a gated community with an owners' association.
They were caught on wacky rigged worms on weighted hooks, crankbaits, and a bait that we'll share with you on Saturday. Be sure to bring a rod that you are comfortable casting a bait that might weigh 1/8th ounce including hook. Gramps, Tate and I each have enough to share with whoever fishes in any of our boats. And Diablos, if you show up we can set you up as well.
No point in publishing the rig on here since you could get the hooks, but not the baits in time for the get together.

Looks like I will be bringing my ultra light, wal-mart Shakespeare for the win! jk, it sucks, but still works. Actually I tossed a very small/light popper with my new rig about 50 yards yesterday, maybe i could just use that. Either way.
I will be where ever needed me to be/whenever i need to be there. Literally someone can tell me "Grundle: Be at this location at this time"
Also, Jones, I know you might have secured a ride but do you legit want me to just pick you up at your house or closer to home? Abington is not far from your house and if need be I could just pick you up. If its not a big deal meeting Tate, then no worries, just thought Id throw it out there.
Sorry guys I will not be able to attend. I was really looking forward to this. I work at a saltwater fishing tackle shop and got asked to open up Saturday. The usual guy who opens on Saturdays is a high school football coach and his game got moved from Friday to Saturday because of the EEE threat.
Working at a fishing tackle shop and actually fishing don't always seem to go together.

Bummer. I was looking forward to meeting you. We may have one more before the season comes to an end. Maybe the middle of October. I could be talked into a year end get together at someplace, like say, Webster Lake, also known as Lake Chargoggmaunchaugagoggchaubungungamaugg
I'm in for the "park and ride" about 6:15. if you want a ride...be there.
I'll bring water, Coke, Sprite, Sunkist Orange soda iced in a cooler. Plenty to go around. I'll be at the park n ride at or before the appointed hour.
Gramps, if I don't think of it, remind me on Saturday about the twistlocks. I have them in the boat.
I'm making a batch of brownies right now...see you all at the park&ride...
tate...what time are you leaving?
Rhino...I looked everywhere for those twist-locks and nobody admits to selling them. Who makes them?
I don't want to do anything at 5:00 in the morning...but I'll be there.

OK guys, be prepared for tomorrows weather. Mid forties around six with temps gradually warming to the low 60s. Northeasterly winds around 8 mph are forecast for tomorrow. Wear layers to stay comfortable.
For me that means a tee shirt, long sleeved turtleneck jersey and a sweat shirt. Better off to err on the warm side. Getting chilly is more uncomfortable than getting a bit too warm, for me anyway.
Looking forward to seeing all tomorrow.
Here's the hourly Mashpee forecast beginning a 8 a.m. Saturday.

I don't know about you guys but I have been having great luck with top water lately. Pop-r's, SPRO frogs, and a nice Strike King buzzbait that is HUGE but i caught a tiny baby bass the other day and could not stop laughing.
I also took Rhino and Gramps advice and went over to Dicks in Brockton and picked up a Senko pack, some limited edition Green Pumpkin Magic I think its called? I liked it because i don't really see gold and silver flakes too often on those. Also picked up some G hooks for wacky and texas rigged. So far over the past two days I have pulled 6 bass, which is fantastic number for the area I was fishing on the Senkos alone, not including 4 more with top water. Hoping I could carry this hot streak into Saturday, but, probably not.
I will say Fall fishing is my favorite hands down.
Good luck out there guys...be sure to post some pics!
See ya at Home Depot tate 5:10am

I'll bring a camera this time. See you tomorrow
I guess I'll go first...We had great weather...an almost perfect turn out...the fish showed up...the food was excellent(great job as usual guys)...a good time was had by all. If GrundleLove can figure out how to download the pics, you might see a couple of fish. He's trying(no easy task).

Sorry about taking my time with the pics. Here are some:
Think its the Delaware rig...could be the Wisconsin rig....or the double uni super twist Montana rig..
Nice pics guys.
I had fun. It was great fishing with Tate, thanks for toting me around buddy. Next time I think you should leave the net at home! Good food and you couldn't have asked for better weather. (well maybe a tad less wind)
But man have I been sick as a dog the past 2 days. Coughing, stuffed up, runny nose, headache you name it. Somebody's got some explaining to do!!
Til next time fellas
PS UKBumpkin we missed you out there and couldn't track you down. Hope everything is alright buddy

I used hand sanitizer before we ate, should of offered to others. I always get skeezed out after touching fish then eating food. I know nothing would probably happen but still never hurts...maybe you got some fish disease. Gills are next...get ready..
Geez...fishin' with tate never made me sick...Great job on the pics Grundle...and to put your minds at ease about the lure...that will hence forth be known as "grundling".
