Whats up everyone just made my account and posting for the first time!! First off some info on myself i have only been bass fishing for about 2 years at the most and started off farm pond fishing with a friend! Before that i would maybe bluegill and catfish once a year if that and never really got into it. I got introduced to bass fishing and ive been literally hooked ever since and over the passed year its become even more of an addiction so i finally bought my first boat, a 14 foot jon boat and decided i was gonna start off small lake bass fishing and so far it has gone good! I started off fishing lakes around the champaign area goin to homer lake first before i even had a trolley motor and i literally paddled around the whole afternoon but probably the best day we've had so far weight wise with my buddy catching a 3 pounder and another right over a pound then i caught a solid 2 pounder with a healthy belly and 3 pretty small bass!! So here goes my main topic im getting tired of fishing homer even though its a beautiful lake and i really suggest trying it because ive heard people pulling out 4 and 5 pounders quite a bit! So im looking for new smaller lakes or even some homer lake pointers would be awesome because all i have is a 55lb thrust trolley motor and a battery i got for free which is shot and only last about 3 hours or so but it works until i get a new one! Ive been researching kickapoo and would really like to know more about it because it seems like from what ive read theres decent bass and would also like to know what other possibilities i have within an hour or so from champaign! Ive fished Homer, river bend rock quarry, walnut point, and lake of the woods which lake of the woods idt i ever caught a bass at! So please any suggestions would be really appreciated so thank you for your time!!
Especially this time of year, westside access on clinton. Seperated off the main lake abd would be a good fit for your boat-no wake area.... Shallow and lacks much of any structure but holds good numbers with a big one every once in a while. I go there about once a year when the wind is blowing too hard but I committed to fishing that day, and comittwd to clinton.
Lots of good fish should move in soon and the shad are
almost too plentiful. Bwell and possibly a few others may have some other options for you as well.
Homer is one of those lakes where its hit or miss, if you catch it on a good day and you will have fun. The east shoreline that leads into the damns has a very steep drop off that holds fish. Drag a jig or deep diving crank you and you might pull something good out.
River Bend in Mahomet is nice and the fishing is good. From the ramp go straight across and there is a shallow flat that always holds fish. If that isn't working look around for blow ups, the fish there are always schooling and once you find the school throw a senko in there and you will catch bass after bass. The north end is also very good. Windy days make it very tough because its so open, and in a john boat it can get scary, also make sure your trolling motor battery is FULLY charged because you will be on it a lot.
Lake of the woods I wouldn't even bother lol,
Check out those small lakes in Kickapoo like you said, Clear Lake, Hidden Pond, Deep Pond ect...
Also Emiquon near Havana is AMAZING, but you definitely need a new battery and a good anchor if its windy because its a flooded field that is wide open.

Awesome i will have to def check that out!! I was wondering if there would be small spots on these bigger lakes where you can get away with a jon boat l i just want sure so thank you very much i will have to give it a try!!

Ya homer is hit and miss for sure i will have to try a jig and some crank baits i just got a whole bunch of new stuff jigs and cranks to try out!! River bend i feel like there are good bass there i just have only fished there once and caught 3 but one jumped off right by the boat! What do you mean exactly by blow ups? and i will have to try straight out from the launch all i did was fish the shore line next to boat ramp then headed to the back part! Im extremely interested in checking out the kickapoo area and have heard great things about long pond or lake whatever its name is.i will have to look into Emiquon also thanks so much!!
i also have no electronics lol im ruffing it for now just making it work trying to locate with my eyes and what i think is a good spot lol
You will see bass blowing up on shad on the surface of the water, shad will be jumping our of the water trying to get away from the bass. Find the jumping shad and you will find the bass.

Oh okay gotcha i seen a lot of shad when i was there jumping around and also jumping from my bait im pretty sure it was def cool and seems like a good spot to fish! Thank you for the help!! Have you been to anything around the kickapoo area?
also, go here and look up what you will be fishing prior to and it may help a bit since you are lacking electronics for the time being.

I haven't but a buddy of mine has. The lakes/ponds are really really clear, and hard to catch fish. A better place to go would be Lake Mingo.

gotcha i also read that your part of the champaign bass club i was suppose to go to the meeting for september but i was out of town and never got a call from anyone and dont have the guys number! Ive been wanting to eventually try some tourneys if i can either find someone to go with or a club to get me out on the lake and see how i can do!
Right now the club is hurting, we have more non boaters than boaters and some tourneys people cant fish because there is no seat for them. I'm not sure if they will take in any non boaters or not but I will ask for you.
Its a HUGE difference going from small ponds/lakes to these bigger ones, you really have to open your mind and try new things.
ya thats why i wanna experience and learn from it all i think it would be a pretty cool experience! You guys are coming up on the last tournament arent you?
We fished it last weekend at Shelbyville. Now we are waiting on our classic at Rend Lake.
Who did you talk to in our club?
oh i thought you guys were doing smithland pool! I cant even remember his name he called me when i was out fishing and said he would email me and call me closer to the time of the meeting and never heard back from him and i was super busy with work and out of town when the meeting happened!
Got ya, but you have his number though? I would give him a call and see what he says...
nope i forgot which number was his i messaged the fb page and didnt get nothing back so idk i might just keep doing my small lake fishing and try next year or find someone to get me out on a big lake lol
It takes awhile for whoever made the FB page to allow people to join lol. If you give me a description of the person I could probably tell you who it was.
i cant even remember it was over the phone and i think his name might have started with a D but cant rememeber for sure a couple members live in my town and one i have known for quite a while! I could always leave a message on the website again i guess but idk if there is much point sense you guys are probably almost done for the year right?!?!
Im thinking its probably Dan Roney
i go to school here. the ponds are ok nothing special. clinton has beem crappy too.

From what I hear its one section of the lake that is doing well. Being that there is a tournament coming up / happened that one spot is beat to crap. It just sounds like it is fishing small. I havent had the best of luck on clinton, where do you fish it. Feel free to pm I want to figure this lake out.
Central Illinois, while not exactly a bass fishing desert, does have its limitations. I've fished many ponds at Kickapoo with limited success. The ponds are deep and clear and not very fertile so their carrying capacity is limited. You can catch a fair number of dinks, though, if that is worth your while. Lake Mingo has some decent bass though it, too, is hit or miss. If you like to wade, the middle fork river has smallmouth and rock bass. I've never tried the south fork but it, too, has fish. I will fish Dawson lake (near Le Roy) sometimes but the last time I was there it was so crowded I couldn't believe it. There are some pretty good lakes but many are over an hour away. I've heard other people swear by Clinton but clearly they must be better fishermen than me because I hate that lake. I have a couple of neighborhood retention ponds I fish but one they seem to be doing their best to ruin it with chemicals.

Ya the way it sounds lake mingo is the only one worth checking out in the kickapoo area! Is the bass fishing good at dawson? Ive never even tried to fish for smallmouth honestly i would love to just havent ever tried it. I have exremely solid ponds around me i just get bored throwing out whatever and catching bass i kind of like the challenges a lake brings to the table its much more rewarding when you actually catch fish lol. I went to walnut point today and had absolutely no luck there for the 2nd time now just one baby bass and the time before i got 3 baby bass we got so bored my buddy started throwing out a bobber and wax worm for bluegill and never even got a hit it was a horrible day on the water lol those are always saddening!!

I only fish about half the lake- the cold end and never going further north east then party/houseboat cove.
Typically I just do several runs of about 15-20 areas and can figure it out from there.
There are days when it fishes small, but I don't know that there are any other lakes finishing with bigger bags in IL this year.
I live about 10minutes from Dawson, and only fish it early spring maybe once or twice.
Gets very crowded and quite frankly the quality is not good for bass either. I usually fish for walleye or crappie when I go there out of boredom.
8-10 years ago, that was actually a pretty good bass lake.

The only other lake ive seen big bags come out of is sangchris. The only bad thing about clinton is so much of the lake is cut off.Like the back of houseboat cove.

The back of that cove is actually open now- I have not fished it at all, but it is fishable.
Now the underwater dikes cutoff by the power plant...still mad I cant fish there any longer.

I've never been to Walnut Point but I have, unfortunately, experienced fishing like you described. Summer and, especially, late summer can be hard!
Hmmm...I'm trying to think of other lakes I've fished in the local area. Weldon Springs-early spring trip-couldn't catch a cold, A pond in Sibley (not to be confused with Sidney)-Not a very scenic pond but caught a few decent bass, Heritage lake on the old Chanute AFB grounds-pretty good in spring, not so good in summer. I've never been to Lake Vermillion (in or near Danville) so I won't provide comment.
Some lakes that are worth a drive if you have the time and/or gas money: Sanchris, Mill Creek, Kankakee River-has walleye, smallmouth, etc. Evergreen Lake (near Bloomington) (has sauger, bass, muskie, white bass, crappie)-but also requires a boat fee if you are out-of-district (which champaign is). There is another lake I'd share but I'd want to know what kind of fisherman you are first. Newton Lake is famous for big bass. Personally, somewhat ashamedly, in the three times I've been there, i didn't do that great.
Dawson Lake has walleye which is a bit of an exotic species for around here. (Well, Clinton has walleye too but you know how I feel about that lake-(bwell has heard me rage about that lake on many occassions). Dawson is not great for bass though, apparently, there are a few small tourney's on it each year. Given it's size, I am surprised it is fished as hard as it is. Perhaps it's because, while it has a no-wake restriction, boats are not limited to certain horsewpower motors and anyone can put on there.

I am also about 10 minutes from Evergreen and have been there once this year- fishing also used to be great here but anymore is pretty awful. It does lack numbers, but also has some giant bass as well as muskie in there. I have a pass on my boat every year and if someone wants to be out there just let me know!
I think you should share that lake you did not mention....
As far as dawson goes, that is exactly why it is always so busy- most of it is crappie fishing, but with the lake so small it just gets beat up no matter what.

ya im interested in what lake hes talking about!! wow lol this has really helped me out haha. I just moved to champaign from CA and ive been strictly going to homer and sometimes clinton. Btw does anybody know if there are public ponds here? I will have to disagree on Homer being a hit and miss though haha i havent been skunked yet just last week i pulled out a 7.1lber on a pit boss i may try to get a picture up of her later.

Did you catch and release? and also i know of some really good private ponds but a couple i have to be with whoever fishes them but one has an excellent quality and quantity of healthy bass its fun to fish if you wanna go out and catch a lot for fun its almost to the point of needing a few taking out! Id love to slam a big bass at homer ive only gotten a couple 2 lbers and my buddy got a solid 3 lber from there cant wait to slam something over 5 hopefully

Oh yeah i released her i have never kept one haha. But yeah ive gotten a 7 and one 6 on a swimbait about about a month ago. The big ones always hang around the North Pennisula and the boat launch are to the left of the Pennisula.

Thanks. By Pennisula I am talking about when you pull into the park you take the first right and go straight then you can go straight or take a right again. Going straight would take you to a boat launch (You can see the "right" side from here which is the north penninsula.) You will know if you are in the right spot because there should be a dock with a table to the right. If you were to take the right before you even turn there is a blue sign in white letters saying North Penninsula. Btw you cant launch a boat from here it is sort of like a place for families and such but there is many LARGE bass there. Just look for grass and brush piles and either bounce a jig off a brush pile or rip it through the grass and it will kill them. Hope this helps.

theres a couple public ponds i forgot to answer to this one! There is one on windsor road where windsor and niel meet head east and its right after the under pass on the south side which would be the right side of the road but i have never fished it! that is public and then there is another one called colbert park that ive seen bass pulled out of or at least pics and i think they have a lot of crappie there but im not 100% sure on that! Theres also another one in north champaign but idk much about it at all lol
There are several but I don't know how good they are because I haven't fished them.
Like Dougie said there is one on Windsor on the south corner of Windsor and 1st street.
There is also another one on Brandley across the street from the soccer fields at Parkland (just west of Mattis ave.). If you keep going North on Mattis till you hit Olympian Dr. take a left at the light, there is a undeveloped subdivision that has several ponds on it.
There is also Mattis Lake, its off of Prospect on Devonshire Dr.

I have looked at the pond in the Yankee Ridge subdivision and it looked pretty well the only problem is there is tons of no tresspasing signs there and i have no idea who to ask permission to fish it. The only pond i have really found was Crystal "Lake" but all the fish there are tiny and besides it is not the safest spot to be in haha
I fished it once but not for very long with no luck...

So I went to the one off on windsor road today. Just to make sure they are two little ponds next to some apartments and what i think is a bank right? I saw a larger pond on the way there but it looked like it was private. When i went to these two little ponds i saw 2 bass but i could not get a bite for the life of me so i was wondering what do you guys use there because i tried everuthing from plastics, squarebills, rattletraps, everytpe of jig, and spinnerbaits without luck.
Hm... not sure where you were lol. The one off Windsor is on the corner of Windsor and 1st street to your south. It's a single pond that has parking off of 1st street.
Generally if you can see the bass they can see you and they wont bite. The best thing to do is fish another spot for about 30 minutes and then come back about 20 yards from where you saw them and cast to the spot, make sure they dont see you.
