Hey I was wondering If there are any fishing clubs/fisherman in the NYC/ LI area??

I live in Nassau County and was looking for others who fished our local waters, too. :( Anyone else here?

I've only done Twin Lakes, Wantagh Mill Pond, the two ponds near Hempstead Lake and Hempstead Lake. I badly want to try Forge Pond, though.

fishing user avatarLast_Cast reply :

Any luck on those lakes? Never had any.

I've met a few guys in each of those ponds/lakes (except Forge Pond) who said they've caught 2-4 lbs. largemouth. I haven't caught one myself yet since the times I went there I didn't know what to expect (too new to this) and was unprepared with my limited gear.

As for Forge Pond, I've seen videos and heard talk about it being the best on the island. I don't have a boat myself, though, and all those guys were on boats.

Update: Just to update this post, I've read that Hempstead Lake was ruined by some anglers a few years ago. :(

fishing user avatarSeanzky reply :

What a disappointing day. Only small fish bit, which I didn't even care about catching, and one frog. A big frog actually tried to eat my frog lure... twice.

the one in my profile picture was caught in Suffolk. A buddy of mine caught a nice 3.5-4lber as well

Depends where. I kind of fish spontaneously, never planned.

fishing user avatarLast_Cast reply :

wherever you guys want, doesnt matter to me

fishing user avatarWeld's Largemouth reply :

I don't have any consistent spots. The frog fish I showed you above is from a small private pond. I don't have a boat so when I can I fish from shore blydenburgh and millers pond with very little luck. I fish millers sometimes from kayak with a little more luck but overall the bass fishing here on LI is challenging. The challenging part is having spots to fish. Most ponds are overfished and not well maintained at all in Suffolk County. It's a shame.

fishing user avatarSeanzky reply :

Any experience in Ronkonkoma? I'm going to check it out tomorrow.

Yeah, the fishing isnt maintained. Def. a shame..You would think it'd be the opposite.

fishing user avatarSeanzky reply :

No luck for me either. Everyone who were fishing were either on kayak or small boat/dinghy. But I keep reading everywhere it's a very challenging lake with not a lot of fish. I almost bought one of these, just to try that lake again: http://www.sundolphin.com/sportsman/

Ronkonkoma is possibly one of the worst spots on the island to bass fish.

Forge Pond is full of weeds and almost impossible to fish. There are good spots on the island, but you have to spend time to find them. It also helps to have a small jon boat or kayak.

I found out the hard way with Ronkonkoma. The banks are so polluted. As for Forge, I haven't tried it yet. I'm seriously considering a boat (electric), though.

Before moving to florida 11 years ago I fished all over Suffolk county.

I agree that forge pond can, or rather was a pretty good pond by L.I. standards.

I say was only because I haven't fished in nigh on 15 years.

But I have caught big bass in there.  I won 2 contests with 7 lb class LM's.

You do need a boat of some kind.  all the popular bass baits work,  one of the biggies was caught on a bush hog spinnerbait and the other on a Johnson silver minnow with pork rind.  both are excellent in the weeds

good luck

There are hardly any spots on the island.. Upstate has loads of lakes all over the place, it's just a far drive.

Yeah. I know. I was thinking of just Google mapping and going to random lakes not so popular

Here's my advice, if you want bass the further east you go in Suffolk the better the bassing.

Free Tip: If your in Nassau county go to Freeport reservoir.

fishing user avatarWeld's Largemouth reply :

Bass are starting to soawn but not laying eggs. No bites at all. Impossible to catch when they are running all over and searching for mates. Saw tons of bass but they were so skiddish. Lots of bass making beds.

Freeport reservoir is nearly impossible to get into. Bummer.

I got out for my first trip this year on Sunday from 930 till 400

Fished a public lake in eastern Suffolk.

Water temp was 52 at start and 56 when I left. No sign of any spawning activity where I was.

I did manage to land 17 bass with 3 others coming unbuttoned at boatside.

Most were around 1 lb with a few good ones in the mix.

The largest bass came on a jig/craw - 4 lb 14 oz.

Most came on a shallow crank.

Heres the 4.14

Nice outing! I'll have to make a trip out east sometimes. All the ponds have different spawning times it seems. This one pond I was at this past weekend, the bass were forming their beds and fish were swimming around skittishly everywhere. None were interested in any lures. Will try that spot again in a few weeks for post spawn.

it was ok, we got rained out on the 4th. i went fishing yesterday and only managed one small largemouth on a frog. I went to the same place today i caught a small one on a frog. an even smaller one on a rage craw punching a slop mat and a decent one on a black/blue chatterbait casting along lay downs and logs

fishing user avatarNYBasser reply :

Had decent Largemouth and Smallmouth fishing upstate. Probably had about close to 40 fish, most of which were around the 1-2 lb range. Largest fish of the day was probably a 3.5lb - 4lb Smallie on a crank. Also fished a local pond on LI. Did okay with the Largies and ended up with around 10, biggest being probably 3lbs. Caught them flipping brush piles.
