Who wants in Novmber! This will be the final competition of this year for who ever will still be hitting the water. I know I won't be able to get out much if at all this month but we might as well still have a thread for November. New comer's are always welcome!
Personally I'm very excited for next year's competitions, hopefully we will get more people to participate and lots of big fish!
Why is it the final comp?

I am assuming some areas will be snowed in soon.

I am sure some will.
Ice fishing is not fishing. Its sitting.drinking.and waiting.

Exactly, ice fishing is not fishing...
We will have snow and ice on our lakes soon enough, but as soon as the our lakes are ice free in the early spring the competitions will resume, can't wait!
You guys obviously know I am not from up North, so I think this question is legit. Do the majority of all of you guys fishing spots freeze over?
Im in!!

last year I was so pumped to go out.. I forgot there was ice on one of the ponds I go to.. So there I was.......... hurled my jig out and all I hear was crack!! I lost my jig. the ice cut my line

Absolutely not lol... way to many trips planned with the bait monkey
It depends on the year some years we are frozen all winter some years not t all. Last year was very mild here so we are due for a long winter. I hope not, I was fishing news years day last year.
Thanks for the replies. I learned something today. Hopefully you guys don't get too bad of winter this year.

Me too then our bass won't be stunted so bad... maybe they'll grow really fat
I am in for the final competition of the year. Probably wont get out too many times this month maybe 5 or 6 times. I am fishing my favorite spot tomorrow though. All the places I fish ice over. There are years when there is almost 48 inches of ice, then there is 2 feet of snow on top of that. Probably will be two weeks around -20 degrees at night like every winter. Ice up on a normal year is early December and then ice out is usually around the second week of April. I am not sure the bass would like to be aid down on the snow or be outside of the water too long. They would literally freeze eyes first then there fins
I do ice fish quite a bit. It isn't just sitting around and drinking beer. You can do that and catch fish, sure. I prefer to actively go and find the fish. The only time I really sit down and wait for fish is breakfast and lunch. You catch more fish if you go and actively look for them as opposed ot sitting around and waiting for them to swim by your bait.

Do you target bass? I know some people do, but trout and perch seem to be targeted the most...
I fish for bass and trout mostly. I get a lot more action going after bass and crappie then trout and cusk. I have had some pretty good days ice fising for bass. They love a nice big frisky 6 inch shiner. I have caught 30 bass in a day up to 6 lbs 8 oz. It is pure craziness when the bite is that good.
WOW!!!

No, actually I am not. I have been born and raised in South Florida, and believe or not I have never seen snow before. I love to learn new things, and I was curious if during the winter all the ponds and lakes froze over in the NE. If so, how far south does this freeze over occur? I apologize if I came off like if I was poking fun of your situation. I know I would be bummed if the tables were turned.

I'm only kidding with you. 99% of the water up here freezes over, and usually from sometime in Dec/Jan thru April. I'm not sure how far south the freeze goes, perhaps somewhere around the DC area?

Thanks Deak, you got me, since I do not interact too much with the NE group, I can't tell who the jokers and the serious ones are yet.
Obvious newbie question...what is the "who wants in" details?
edit: sorry, just read through the "October" and figured it out.
Got to the lake today with high hopes. I was hoping to repeat the last couple weeks success. It was near 50 degrees mostly sunny with calm winds. After fishing the first couple hour with little success I realized everything had changed and that the pattern I was on was no more. The lake had come up 4 feet, the water clarity dropped to 1 foot. It was mostly sunny not overcast like it had been. There was calm winds as opposed to the 5-15 mph winds last weekend. After 4 hours I had caught 1 bass a 18.5 inch 3 lb 12 oz largemouth. I decided to adjust and change up location, lure and tactics. It seemed to be the right choice. IN the last 2.5 hours of fishing I caught 3 largemouth and 2 smallies. The largemouth were 2-10, 2-12, 2-13. The two smallies were 2-11 and a 20 inch smallie at 3 lbs 9 oz. The 3-9 smallmouth was very skinny. The day ended much better then it started. I caught three fish on a crankbait, one on a jig and one on a weightless worm. I think that the next day I will be fishing will be Thursday.
Fish # 1
18.5 inch 3 lb 12 oz Largemouth
Fish # 2
20 inch 3 lb 9 oz Smallmouth
Nice start, Mainebass. I knew yesterday was going to be tougher than people thought. Today, even tougher, but I'm heading out into the eye of the storm with my buddy DeakNH, see if we can't wake up a couple big heads.
I have decided to give it a go as well. Heading to a different pond today. I will be targeting fish in 15-45 feet. Good luck !

When I hired a guide some years back to take me on my first ice fishing trip this is what I thought ice-fishing would be. He had a nice little hut out on the lake, and at first it was great......learned about augers, tip-ups, etc. But then we sat in the hut. He hauled out some Allen's and Fireball whiskey and after 20 min called his family....out they came on their snowmobiles.....brought a firepit and more Allen's. Every now and then they'd notice the flags and would howl and fall and crawl over to haul a fish out. I left early and nobody noticed

Hey, let us know how you did !
I'm not "in" just yet. I need to make some sort of ruler box first but thought i'd give my update form today. It was a cold, cold windy morning with wind straight out of the north blowing hard. Air started at 33, water was still 51 though. I got 18 and my little brother caught 12. Mostly on the jerkbait and a few on a pbj jig. Most came on a point with deep water close by.
I had (4) 3 to 3.5's and the rest were 1-2 pounders. We fished from 6am to 10:30.
Here's one with a full belly....
nice, i will be back out on wed morning, then sat, my other addiction of hockey has been taking up most of my mornings. Just back from a week of playing in an old timers tourney in montreal.
Very nice smokinal. Sounds like you had a great day. the water looks pretty calm where you were. When I got to the lake I wanted to fish there were 2-3 foot white caps. They weren't just white caps they were rollers.. the wind was blowing 15-25 mph. the wind chill was in the low 20's. I stuck around the boat launch for about an hour. After that I decided it just wasn't a good idea to take my 10.5 foot boat out there in those conditions. I think I will be getting out this Thursday.
I'll try jumping in.
19 3/4" Smallie
19" Largie
Whoa! That smallie is the prettiest fish I've seen in a long time! Nice job, man!
Nice smallie man!!

Caught on a 2" XRap Rapala. I wish I got a better pic with the lure. Thx!
I went our fishing this morning with high hopes. A warm overcast light rainy day in November. Seemed like the perfect combination to catch some late season bass. It was a warm 50 degrees when I got to the lake. The water temp was 44-45 degrees, light rain with winds out of the south around 5-10 mph. I motored over to y first spot with my electric. On my first cast of the day I hooked into a real nice bass. After a decent fight I slid it into the net. It was a lunker largemouth at 22.25 inches 7 lbs 6 oz. After fishing the spot for several minutes and trying several different lures I moved onto the next spot. Caught another bass there about 2.5 lbs. Fished there awhile then moved on. Got to the next spot where I quickly landed a 18.25 inch 3 lb 3 oz largemouth. It was so skinny it was it looked sick. Every time I moved to a new spot I would catch a bass. I then moved to one of my favorite spots where I caught a 8 lber two weeks ago. First cast I hook into a monster. It was real heavy and felt like a stump that was head shaking. After a couple moments it got off. Hooked just pulled out. I know it was a lunker but you cant catch them all I guess. Several casts later I switched up lures and then hooked into a monster bass. It pulled my boat left then right and wouldn't come up off bottom. I was chasing it a bit with the trolling motor. I got it to the surface and couldn't believe what I saw. It was a giant. After some tense moments I got it into the net. It seemed to barely fit. It was the biggest bass I had ever seen or caught for that matter. It measured 23.5 inches long and 19.5 inches around. I weighed it several times. Biggest bass I have ever caught at 9 lbs 1 oz. I took some photos, a video and grabbed a couple scales for aging and let her go. When the day was over I had landed 5 largemouth and 1 smallmouth. I didn't catch a single fish after the front passed through at 1 o'clock.
First bass of the day
22.25 inches 7 lbs 6 oz
18.25 inches 3 lbs 3 oz
23.5 inches long 19.5 in girth 9 lbs 1 oz
Here's a video I took of it.
WOW I thought the 7lbs 6oz was going to be the pig! When I catch a 7 I am going to be pumped, you and Shane catch these 7.5lbs bass all the time!! I was not expecting to see a 9 pounder!!!
Very nice! That's what I'm talkin' about! What was on the back of that jig?
Congrats on your new PB Mainer!! Sounds like a heck of a morning! And thanks for sharing the video with us.
FAKE!!!!!!!!
Just kidding man, way to go. Was sort of excited to think it was from the "water supply" pond... oh well.
19 1/4"
Nice job!
Got out for a little over 2 hours today. 30 MPH winds made conditions tough. Only caught two but one of them was the biggest fish I have landed in two months.

Don't know what this competition is all about but here is my 22 inch smallie I caught nov.6 at the Susquehanna river. It's also my personal best. Hit a few other hogs that day.

Nate, this is a friendly comp in which we take a picture of measured fish and keep the five largest fish of the month. The comp originated in the Southeast thread. Jitterbug stepped up and started one here for the Northeast. It's been a blast and some great catches have come out of it. Check last month for MaineBass' amazing 5 fish for a total of just over 113"!
Hope to see you join in if not this month but when it starts again next year. Congrats on the PB! Is that over 7lbs? I hope to fish the Susquehanna next year. I"ll be happy with a smallie half that size.
I wish I knew the exact weight my scale batteries were dead witch sucks. But at least I threw him on the rule. It's amazing how wide and tall the smallies get. Pictures never put things into real life perspective. I'll keel this competition in mind for my future catches.

Its has been feeling like winter lately out my way. Daytime high temps below freezing and snow the past 4 mornings... not done for the year yet though. I think I will be able to get out fishing at least a couple more times before everything freezes up. How many guys are still out fishing ?

I got out for an hour and a half last week and threw crankabits, jigs, spinnerbaits and some weighted soft plastics in 10-20 feet of water. Only bite I had was a 2 pound 2 ounce largemouth up against shore in 8 inches of water when I was getting out of the canoe. They had me stumped, but I plan to give it atleast 1 more try before the lakes are iced over.
Heading out Friday, then probably next week when Shane VanDam gets back from fantasy week.
How did you guys do last week ?

You guys should join our competition next year... Here is an example from the month of Sept. where the rules are described... http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/124375-who-wants-in-september/
It's a lot of fun, a prize isn't necessarily given to the winner each month, but people can volunteer to provide a prize if they'd like... Shane J provided a prize one month and I provided the one for last month...

Nice fish deak
Going to be cold this tomorrow morning. Might have to break some ice to get to open water. I am going for it though. I am alos making a road trip to Maine on Sunday. Hopefully I will be able to run into one or two fish. Any one else braving the elements to get out this weekend ?
Mainebass and I broke ~200 feet of ice and a trolling motor pin but we got out there!

I kept joking that we're a freaking Russian ice breaker on national geographic!

I see what you did there
Well yesterday was an interesting day to say the least. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. When we arrived at the launch there was a lot of ice built up where we had to access the lake. I could stand just off shore on the ice and not break through. After breaking enough ice to get the boat in we then had to break through ice that was over an inch thick for about 200 feet until we got to open water. We broke a trolling motor pin in the process. I was able to come up with another one after a quick trip back to my place. After much delay we motored across the lake to the spot we wanted to fish. The water temp on the northern end of the main lake was 44 degrees. The fishing was slow but I managed to fish on a jig. We decided to move up into the upper pond. That ended up being a bad decision. That section of the lake was 38 degrees and a large section of it was frozen. Yet another time consuming mistake. So after that we motored back to where the water temp was warmer. We had little time left to fish. Then the prop to the trolling motor came off... It was time to paddle. We paddled up to where a road came close to lake. We had to go across private property to get the road to load the boat. Getting the boat through the thicket really sucked and someone went down really really hard face first in the mud (webertime). It was such a failure of a day. I have never had so much go wrong in one day. Lot of ice, trolling motor pin busted, lost props, and I only caught two fish...
Here is the path we made through the ice.
Not to be defeated I decided to go back out fishing the next day after I found another prop. Unfortunately webertime could not go. The weather was great 50 degrees sunny with no wind. I didn't have to worry about breaking ice today, we did that yesterday. I motored up the lake to the same spot I caught two fish yesterday. I focused my time on that area for most of the day. I caught 3 fish pretty quickly on a jig. I had a badd follow my jig all the way to the boat. I stopped reeling and let it free fall to bottom. The follower slammed it before it hit bottom. It was my largest bass of the day. A largemouth at 19.75 inches. It was very very skinny and weighed in at 3 lbs 6 oz.
19.75 inches 3 lbs 6 oz
The jig bite slowed as the day went on. I started fishing a weightless worm. I was fishing 15-30 feet so patience was important. If there was any wind doing this would have been near impossible weightless. I ended up catching 7 more bass on the weightless worm. The biggest were 2 lbs 10 oz, 2 lbs 9 oz, and 2 lbs 8oz. I called it a day about 2:30-3:00. The sun was setting behind the mountain and the wind was picking up. For a mid November day when a good portion of the lake covered in ice it was a good day of fishing. I caught 10 largemouth and 1 pickerel on the day. It was my last day of the year fishing Vermont. The season ends at the end of the month. I will be getting out a couple more times in Maine. I am making a day trip there tomorrow.
The 19.75 incher culls out my smallest bass a 18.35 incher. I think my biggest 5 for the month are 23.5, 22.5, 20,19.75 and 18.5 for a total of 104 inches.
Correction. A total of 104.25 inches.
Sniper got me good, jaw still hurts.
The post I made here was deleted due to the website being down. I wrote up a detailed report of my last day out fishing in the fishing reports section. My friend and I had a great day fishing. I was able to cull out my smallest fish a18.5 incher with a 20.5 incher that weighed in at exactly 5 lbs. That brings the total for the month to 106.25 inches
And there you have it, my friends. And what were you catching the fish on there, buddy?
I was catching those fish on a jig with a pretty amazing trailer. Seemed like the trailer made all the difference. Shane you every heard of rage trail ? I was using a rage craw as a trailer.
Haha. Yeah, buddy! My one and only trailer! I promise, you will see your fish getting bigger! No joke!
I don't know Shane... Not sure how much bigger can they get around here....
You'll be the one to find out.
Is anyone still getting out on the water ?
Me n Deaknh03 went out for a couple hours yesterday. He got 1, I got none. I plan on focusing on the rivers to get me through the winter.
