There dosnt seem to be a big CT population on BR. There's a few really good guys over on ct fisherman that ill try and send this way. Thought we could start a thread to pass on some knowledge. Hope the Mass and NY crews chime in as well.
Ill start
I'm from new haven county
Been bass fishing only a year and I'm clearly addicted.
Pumpkin charuste worms worked best last year
Ill let you in on a little no fact. Lake saltonstall in Branford is owned by the power company and they will rent you a 14foot boat with life jackets and a trolling motor for something like 35$. They have stocked walleye and I've personally pulled a few 4lbs LMB outta there. Plus the trout get huge over by the flat Rock wall straight out from the dock. I'd check the website to find the days and hrs. I know there open all day sat and sun. But only a couple other days during the week.
Danbury CT, here. Lived in the area for about 4 years. I'm originally from Lexington MA, and I find myself up there a lot during the year visiting friends / family. If you'd like to meet up sometime this spring, bmac, i'd be up for that.
I'm relatively new myself, but like you i'm completely hooked. (no pun intended).
Live on long island, but fish all over ct. Candlewood, Lillinonah, Twin, Bantam, Zoar, Ct River. You get the point. Great state for bass fishing.
Sounds good RF. Hit me up sometime. I was shocked to learn how good the bass fishing is in CT. Ive never fiahed the CT River any recommendations on a good spot. Hows Indian wells state park area. I have a family friend who lives on the water right by the park. Thanks guys
The Ct River is a very good fishery, but it depends on the tides on the lower sections. It takes some getting used to. Coves with grass and pads and main river grass have always worked for me.
Another CT guy here. I used to get out at Indian Well a lot when I had my boat, but not much the past year or so. I have pulled a handful of 4+ lbers out of there, but wouldn't really consider it to be a very good fishery compared to other places in the state. Mostly went there due to convenience. I'm curious what you guys think of East Twin? I was hoping to get out there this spring, but don't know much about it at all. I have heard people say that it has potential due to the trout population. Any thoughts?
I'm in central connecticut and fish club tournaments across the state.
When is everyone hoping to hit open water by?
Brian
Mid-late March is usually my goal. I prefer ice to be out for a few weeks. All depends on the weather of course.
Im hoping to be out 1st week of March. Celebrate my bday in style.
Brian
As soon as the ice breaks and i'm not shivering outside, i'll be there.
Anybody going to the CT fishing and hunting show? Hartf. Convention Center Feb 14,15,16.
hello from beacon falls (new haven county) and your right we need to represent for connecticut the south represents so lets let them know we have some sticks out here too. so i fish mainly from shore except when i fish tournaments as a co and ive fished almost every inch of this state from big lakes to small unknown ponds and reservoirs which are my favorites because ive caught my biggest bass all alone in these beautiful little spots. i just wanted to chime in and represent for our state. biggest largie 8.2lbs and biggest smallie about 3 1/2 thanks and good luck this year fellas.
as for what dink asked the very second the water turns soft ill be throwing my line in. COME ON SPRING!!!!!! I GOT THE ITCH
sorry its bmac i was looking at your forum level
Just joined site from Shelton. Been lurking for a bit but you made me finally join.
I fish from shore. No boat unfortunately.
Couple of nice small ponds I fish when ice melts. Last year was March 9th so keeping fingers crossed.
I'm also a big trout guy so can't wait for April 19th.
Just moved to Shelton in July so looking for more small ponds to fish in the area
Checking in from S.E. Connecticut.
Looks like my early March prediction won't come true lol
By the way mbac31, thanks for starting this thread. Didn't realize there were so many of us up here.
Waiting for ice out. Even if it's just to throw some top waters and spinners for Pickerel.
Todd
huskybass, are you still out there somewhere? Would like to join you for a trip on our favorite smallie water in MA in 2014!
I'm from central CT and mostly fish small ponds around here (Batterson Park, Spring Pond, Farmington Reservoir). I spend most of my fishing budget heading to Lake Champlain every chance I can, but the stuff around here is pretty good too.
I didn't know that about the power company at Saltonstall. Do you know about how many boats they have? Can you call ahead? It would be quite the hike to get there and be out of luck.
I'd guess they have around 25 boats with trolling motors. They always have plenty boats without and if you bring your own trolling mortor ypu can get the boat for 10$. I probably went 20+ times this year mostly on saturdays and I always got a boat and motor. It mightve helped I was always there within a half hr of opening. There nice guys that work there so a phone call might help save you a motor.
Awesome to see all the CT guys. Glad the thread is liked. Maybe we can get a CT BR outing on Candle Wood sometime this year.

I would definitely be willing to get in on that. Unfortunately, I'm a non boater these days though.
Just moved to West Haven from Stratford. What's up everyone.
Who up here is in CBN? And any of you interested in the new NEBA/CBN trail?

One of these years I need to join. That team trail looks like a lot of fun.

Not familiar with it. Fill us in.
Ken from Stratford, CT. Can’t wait to hit the water! If I’m not practicing for a tournament I prefer to hit candlewood. You just can’t beat it. I’m a member of BIO Bass and we are affiliated with the TBF. If anyone is ever interested in fishing a club tournament as a guest just let me know. It is very laid back and fun.
Hey Ken I might take you up on that one day. Did anyone else here that classic runner up Paul Mueller is from Southbury? Way to go Paul!
On 2/24/2014 at 1:25 PM, bmac31 said:Not familiar with it. Fill us in.
www.ctbass.com theres a handful of clubs in the state in CBN. Paul who came in second last night in the classic is from here too. On the website theres a list of people to contact if any of you guys have questions, contact Sylvia. She heads the Nation. Hopefully if some of you guys are interested she can sneak you guys into our club or another for this year. All dues combined are around $130/year plus your $25/year Bassmaster membership. Our club has 6 club tournaments each year. Some clubs may have more. Each club has 1 meeting a month, some clubs mandatory some not. I prefer to attend all of them. CBN state tournaments are optional. I highly recommend everyone here to get involved. More people the better.
---------------------
As far as NEBA, they are doing a combined trail this year with CBN. Its a team trail, 6 tournaments.
Hello my fellow ct bassers. I hope to be out there too soon I hope. Maybe an early spring?
The big chill is on, maybe a northeastern by Monday?

Yea, this winter has been exceptionally bad. I need a dose of global warming! Todd
I'm not welcome on one of the ct fisherman sites. One tonrnie guy said we only have up to 7# lb bass here. I posted My PB is 10# so far I lost bigger and seen bigger. I guess I insulted his ego. Soon after his buddies were catching between 9 to 11# bass. There here if we fish it right.
I fish 24/7 from when the bass are moving till I get burned out. I'm up at 3:30am and fish till 8 or 9am. When the bass move from the shoreline to there haunts and cover at about 9am. By my third month I'm burned out. Unless the misses wants to go to Maine on vacation.
The very first time I used senko's that following weekend she wanted to go away. The senko bite was hot that week. Bummer.
But it was ok. I mainly fish from shore at the smaller places.
I get to hammer one spot or gun and run to another close spot.
There's a lot of great fishing in ct still. There's not that many bass fisherman like us here.
Checking in.....Why--Obviously not for you BMac.. I read your post...First week of March for your birthday? We're getting snow again!!! Hopefully within the next few weeks though. I've gotta try these new setups!
PS: Looking for some nice new little spots--anyone from CT> Just somewhere to walk to. Oxoboxo was a homerun last year!

A guy can dream. Can he not?. This is insane.
Just signed up, I'm from Southeast Ct. fished all the lakes around here, Patchaug, billings, beach pond, Amos and Such. Looking to branch out to other lakes this year. Tried lillinonah but came up empty and almost got hit by a sea plane. Hope to see you guys on the lake.
Cheers

WELCOME! Do you usually fish from a boat or the bank?
Boat , just a little 14 ft sea nymph. But its comfy
How is Patchaug? I read some good things on it on some site. I've never ventured out that way though other than to gamble.
57° fellas.

Its pretty good. during the summer its a zoo full of jet ski's , spring is nice only ever caught some LB but im told there are some really nice pikes in there somewhere. Lots of shallow spots so be careful.
I'm doing it with no boat fishing the small ponds or man made dams that we're used for water power at one time.
This year I'm going to spread out to lake lillionah, lake zoar, the housatonic river near Kent, and some special unfished swamps. There's great northern pike in the upper housatonic.
The trick is to fish them at 3:30am when it's very, very quiet.
Just beaware of the bears and mountainlions.
We do have double digit bass in ct. So let's get to it.

Yea, there are some very big pike. WAY to crowded in the summer. Many better options without the crowds. Great spot off season though.
Yeah that one jack a$$ with the Yellow Sea plane is a $6)?477&$(@$!(>€ he almost hit us once and another time landed right where we were casting. He thinks he owns the lake.
On lillinonah there's a double dog leg near the dam. I was logging near it and watched two big pike ambushing anything in the path. I tried to hit it from zoar but stupid me it's in lilly above the dam. I hope to fish the pads near the Bridgewater boat ramp.On 3/9/2014 at 8:22 PM, 03sp500 said:Just signed up, I'm from Southeast Ct. fished all the lakes around here, Patchaug, billings, beach pond, Amos and Such. Zoar is full of bass along the winding SOUTHBURY,CT road. A split shot rigged black rubber worm from a boat or from shore will keep you busy.
Took a ride to nearby haunts and the ice is still on with no end in sight. One tough winter for sure. I wonder if we had another winter kill.
The deer are here looking for food every few days now.
My buddy Brian and I went to Hanover Pond in Meriden on Monday afternoon because there's no ice. We just wanted to try out some new reel combos. It was freakin' cold...and by cold, the excess water was freezing to the eyes on the rod. I'm praying for some warmer weather in a couple of weeks.....
50's all next week, guys. A few days of rain, but that'll help get rid of a lot of the ice too..... We're almost there!

I liked Hanover. Seemed like a Nice little bank fishing spot. Lots of shoreline. good when you don't have time to take out the boat. I'm assuming you can toss the yak in there but I'm not sure.
Brian
Here's what I dug up on Hanover Pond...
HANOVER POND, Meriden (70 acres)
Town operated boat launch. <---so we can Yak

Steerage speed means " bare steerage way" the slowest speed that you can still be able to steer the boat. Keeps wake down. Todd
I think I been to Hanover once. Does that have that handicap walkout for fishing?
Had 24 Turkey's in the field today. There gobbles woke me up at noon. Another new spinning reel arrived today. I think I'll be trout fishing more this year. Bass fishing seems a long way off yet.
On 3/29/2014 at 9:55 AM, bigbill said:I think I been to Hanover once. Does that have that handicap walkout for fishing?
I don't think it does.
Gonna run over and take a stab at my local farm pond before the rain. I'll let you guys know how I make out.
Brian
I need to go to lake zoar more. I was thinking about going to Batam for great northern pike too.
I need to look for a boat soon. Something light I can launch were no boat ramps are. I have some hot spots were no motors are allowed.
Got out sat and Sunday for a couple he's each. Hit up a little flood controlled lake in town. It's always been good to me but I got nothing the last two days. Didn't even see any signs of life. I tossed a jerk/Senko/jig/tube and slow rolled a spinner.
Brian
Same, on sat and sunday.......Got a few hard bites, and reeled in a couple Pickerel. I blame myself for the missed hooksets... But yea, still need to take it SUPER SLOW...
Picking up of late. Got out last couple days. Did well tossing the jerk bait. Mostly pickerel but that's better then nothing. Crappie and sunny also active. Bass were small. Felt good to get back out there.
Where do you wanna go tomorrow morning? 8 Am Brian? No trout ponds!
Ok another check in from southeast CT, got into bass and kayak fishing last year and I was quickly addicted to both. I'm a catch and release kinda guy because nobody but me likes to eat fish in my family. I average at least one outing a week and have been trying different lakes/ponds. So far this year I've been to Glasgo Pond, Mansfield Hollow Pond and Green Fall Pond(yesterday). The biggest I've gotten so far were a couple of 2 pound bass, a medium sized chain pickerel and a nice sized calico in Glasgo.....but as long as I'm getting fish in the yak I'm a happy camper.
Did pretty good at Saltonstall this weekend. Alewife were schooling all along the dock side back late Friday afternoon. Got several fish from 2-3lbs on a swimbait and a few on a 3/4 lipless crank. I got lucky when a school just popped up right next to me.
Today I got a couple over 4lbs on a football jig close to the bank around brush piles.
Still need to officially break 5 pounds. Hoping I can pick off a big female before the spawn goes into full effect.

Glad you had luck at Saltonsall. I got shut out there a few weeks ago and haven't gone back. The other guys I was with didn't do so well either. We fished the whole shoreline down the lake on the boat. On the other hand, Twin Lakes have been popping!
Hit up Saltonstall today (saturday). Got there about 615am and Headed left from the dock and fished the shallows and the first drop off. Ground 8 I got into a nice 2.5 - 3lb LMB on a 4 inch lite blue swim bait. He hit it right off the weed line and dove hard. I was using my 15 year old Shimano bc (basically a winch) on a nice med/heavy rod and it was a chore getting her in. She kept diving under the boat. About a half hr later I hooked in the same area what I believed to be a 3+ lb LMB but I lost her next to the boat. Around 11 I got into a 2lber in two feet of water. Got my last one around noon also in very shallow water. All my fish came on a 4in lite blue paddle tail swim bait on one of those hooks with the sliding weight.

No prob. Good luck
From Vernon, CT so far i have had lots of luck at Coventry lake, Mansfield Hollow and a number of small no name ponds. The Bolton lakes were hot earlier in the year but now well into summer are almost dead, the chemicals they dumped in didnt help either.
Umm living in Webster there was an overwhelming temptation to fish Little Pond... so I did and caught maybe 20 fish in 3 hours but they were possibly the same 12" fish....Hmmm
Anyone gotten out this year yet? All open water here in New Haven County.
I've beat the bank a few times and had a couple tugs but nothing else. Sure felt good to have the rod in my hand.
Wonder how iced up East and West Twin up in Salisbury are.

I think it's to revive this thread! I'm from Danbury area and went out a couple of times with no luck. I've mostly been using a chatterbait and jerkbait but either moving too fast or using the wrong color. I work up by Salisbury and every body of water has melted between there and Danbury (haven't checked the last two days though).
I'm from Central CT and haven't been out yet this year. Probably be end of March before I am. Can't wait for temps to warm a bit and start the spring bite.
I fish any open water I can find, year-round. During the coldest months, I fish for striped bass in the lower Housatonic River. Yesterday, a buddy and I caught three dozen with a 30-inch keeper:
I'll be out of town for a while and really hope that I don't miss the yellow perch spawn or the anadromous white perch spawn in the Connecticut River.

Awesome day PECo! Hope you get back in time for the perch spawn.
I'm planning on getting down to the Housy the next nice day. probably have to go from the shore. I just got a 14ft tin with a 7.5 merc and a bow mount trolling motor, but it won't be ready to launch till opening day. I spent all today organizing my gear trying not to think about the snow. I'm about a 1/3 done. Bait monkey problems, lol.
Brian
Anyone else get out for trout opening day? Caught a bunch of stocker rainbows and a nice brown, met a nice guy and his son that was unbelievably helpful with a measuring tape and showing me how to bleed them. First time in 20 years I've not caught and released but 2 of the rainbows looked too tasty. So if that guy is reading this, thank you again so much. Can't wait to hit the river again tomorrow. Bass aren't biting so far but it felt so great having something on the line.
Hey guys , I'm up in CT for a few days at my sisters.. anywhere local where the bass may be biting? I'm in colchester

There's a few options near you that could produce. Lake Heyward is a decent spot, no gas motors but has a good smallie population. Moodus Reservoir is another decent lake, I fished lower Moodus the day after opening day without too much luck but I usually do pretty well there. Lake Williams in Lebanon has a pretty good shore fishing area if you don't have a boat. Just a few thoughts.
Can you fish Heyward without like a lake permit?
On 4/24/2017 at 11:09 PM, EdsBar said:Can you fish Heyward without like a lake permit?
Yes, to the best of my knowledge it is not private and does not require a permit. I've launched and fished it numerous times over the past few years. Don't know if it's the same for shore fishing but I've had friends who have ice fished there with no problems.

Well since you posted this I've been out 2x on a private lake in Guilford. The first outing I caught 2 small ones. Last Sunday caught 3 LMBs in the 1-2 lb range on a gold husky jerk. The Osprey were catching more and watched one holding a bass in its talons swoop down over us in an obvious taunt.
I was able to get out on a local lake the Sunday after opening day. Managed 2 bites but no fish, also ended up with a lower unit problem. Boat is now in the shop for the second week, not sure when it'll be ready. Hopefully I'll be out in early May.
Caught a bunch of 1-2 lb LMBs today, but this Crappie caught by my buddy stole the show. Guilford lakes.
Good to see a few of us CT guys getting out. Let's keep this rolling, anyone get out and have any luck recently? Still waiting on boat lower unit repair, going on a month now or I'd be posting myself.
I haven't been out yet in CT in a while, but hoping maybe to hit up Eastern Connecticut tonight/tomorrow weather permitting. I can't wait to get my kayak into Pattagansett.
Caught a 3.62 lb LMB yesterday, along with 12 in the 1-2 lb range on a small pond fishing for 6 hours from my canoeyak. Private pond.
Hit Scoville Reservoir last Tuesday in Wolcott and caught a bunch of dinks, 2 rock bass, 2 perch and 2 pickerel.
It was a good week. Everything was on crank baits and spider grub jigs.
The last fish I caught yesterday had an encounter with an Osprey that took a chunk out of her back.
Nice fish Burr! Looks like it's going to warm up this week which will be nice.
I went to Pattagansett on Saturday from about 8-11. I had my kayak in, the skies were grey, water was pretty calm. I couldn't get a bite for the life of me. I threw everything from Senkos to the Whopper Plopper. The only hit I had was a pickerel on a Husky Jerk Bait. My buddy and I are supposed to go out today--we were thinking somewhere like Billings, or should we stick with a small pond where the water might be warmer?
My parents live up there, so I go up intermittently to fish. Ice fishing as well! Lots of perch around the Tolland area, and some nice LMB.
Finally got out Monday on my buddies 12 foot jon boat as my boat is now on week 7 in the shop. Hit a smaller pond near his house. Fished from about 7-11 and each picked up half a dozen or so largemouth with a bunch of pickeral. Biggest largie was 4lbs 2oz that my buddy caught. Relatively steady action all morning. Felt good to finally catch a bass.
7 weeks and a new lower unit later, I got my boat back last night. I can't wait to get out on the water again and hit some spots I haven't fished in a number of years. More reports to come!
I've been fishing a lot, lately, but also traveling and not fishing a lot, too. I post a lot of reports on a local Connecticut fishing forum. Today, I'm stuck in Newark, New Jersey, but here's my report from Monday:
QuoteI'm going to be out of town for a while, so I had to go fishing one more time before I left. I figured that I'd paddle my local pond for just a little while, but things didn't quite work out that way. When I launched my kayak at 10:15 am, the sky was totally overcast and there was a light north breeze. The air temperature was in the low 60s. Despite the glare on the water, I could see that the water was clear down at least a couple of feet. The water temperature was 67 degrees in the south bay when I launched, but hit 68 degrees on the north bay later in the day.
Although my intention was to eventually throw a Zoom Horny Toad over the shallow spawning flat in the northwest corner of the pond, as usual, I started by throwing a wacky-rigged Green Pumpkin/Red Flake five-inch Senko. I got a bite on only my second or third cast and boated a small keeper largemouth bass that weighed one pound, 13 ounces:
During the first hour, I boated six keepers ranging from one pound, six ounces, to one pound, 13 ounces. The fish weren't tight to shore or cover. Like yesterday, when I fished Congamond, they appeared to be roaming around the outside weedline. My guess is that the largemouth bass are still in pre-spawn mode and will probably be on beds soon.
At the end of the first hour, I had to cut off a good chunk of my newly spooled fluorocarbon line, due to a snag caused by line twist. One day, I'll have to learn how to cast without helicoptering my lures so much.
I paddled up the east shore to the northeast corner and across the north shore toward the northwest corner. By the time I got there, I had caught a total of nine largemouth bass keepers, but still up to only one pound, 13 ounces. As planned, I switched to a Bullfrog Zoom Horny Toad and soon got a good bite. I paused for a couple of seconds, reeled in the slack and set the hook HARD. I could tell that the fish was over two pounds by how hard it pulled. It swam under the front of my kayak and banged against it. As it headed back behind me, the Horny Toad popped out of its mouth! NOOOO! I couldn't believe it! When I took a close look at the Horny Toad, I saw that the hook was still buried in the plastic. Arghhh!!!!
I tossed the Horny Toad for only a few more minutes, before switching back to the Senko and heading for deeper water. As I paddled around the north island, I caught a sunny before setting the hook on a better fish. A MUCH better fish! I finally broke the two pound mark with a four pound, 11 ouncer:
In the end, my short paddle took 5-1/4 hours. I caught 14 largemouth bass, of which 13 were keepers, although only two were over two pounds. In addition to the four pounder, I caught one that was two pounds, seven ounces. My five fish bag would have been about 12 pounds, nine ounces. Now, I wish that I didn't have to go out of town.
Nice outing PECo! Strangely enough I was in Newark yesterday for work as well. I plan to hit Coventry lake tomorrow as I have my boat back and am taking a day off. I'll follow with a report.
