Nope I’m sure they are there if we can get the occasional 8 lb bass in Wisconsin I’m sure that Ohio has its fair share of 10s. I’m sure no one is going to say where but I’m sure there there.

Well not just those that live here, but those that have at least been here and know the fisheries. If you’ve never been to Ohio how would you know what’s here and where?

Start throwing big baits I throw big swimbaits here in Wisconsin. Sure my buddies catch more fish but I catch significant bigger fish sometimes I won’t get a bite for a week or two but I get the big fish to show them self. Give it a try but have patience and stick with it.

Get yourself a big glide bait you don’t have to spend a fortune a S waver 200 will draw the fish in don't plan on catching them all but you will get some heart breaking follows.
The Ohio state record largemouth bass is 13.13 pounds and was caught in the year 1976. This means there have been documented catches of bass 10 pounds or bigger in Ohio. Very few people are going to tell you where they catch big bass so the best thing you can do is put your time on the water and use techniques known for catching big bass if your goal is to catch more big bass.

Yea, there are a few double digits lurking here in private farm ponds for sure and there are a lot of them. Some people catch 5 pounders and take them home to their private ponds and feed the heck out of them for years.
The biggest Smallmouth ever caught in Lake Erie was close at 9.5 lbs.

You are welcome. Do research and find where people have caught 8 pound or bigger largemouth bass in Ohio and write these places down in a notebook. Research what lures they use to catch these fish, when they caught these big bass, and other important information. Fishing for big bass is like hunting where you have to put in more work compared to catching small-regular sized bass which are much easier to catch. For example I usually have to fish for several days to just to catch 1 bass over 8 pounds and usually only 1 day to catch a bunch of small-medium sized bass.

I’ve got permission to dabble a couple up there, which part of Ohio you talking? Where I’ve been there’s an entire town of about 100 people, most of them my future in laws and all their relatives. Seems like a good strategy there would be offering to help out with some farm chores in exchange for fishing privileges. The VFW would be a good place to network, because it’s the only place!

I live in Florida but have caught bass in several states and have caught most of the black bass species that have been identified as of this moment. What helps me the most is to research the type of fish I want to catch, learn what techniques are best for the place I plan on fishing in, and put in the time needed. I usually catch the fish I am after in my fishing vacations and it is because I do lots of research before going fishing. Another thing you can do is find someone in your area who is good at catching big bass and you fish with them.

I've heard this said many times, and not just up North. First guy who told me that was in Texas about 1982-ish. All these years I've wondered one thing: what the heck do you feed a LMB? I know what you feed catfish, but bass aren't scavengers. What do you feed bass? Koi? Shiners? Do you go out and seine something, and how often? Do you stock normal forage fish yearly?
And how do you know that they're healthy?

What he said! I think Kent is a much bigger place than where I frequent in Ohio so you probably have plenty of options to run into landowners. The VFW is a hangout for vets and their guests, and also the only place to find people to talk to for a few miles in any direction where my fiancé is from. Her whole family was in the service so I’ve had the pleasure to listen to some stories in there (several of which involved big farm pond bass and pictures!)

Absolutely there are 10s there. Not sure about fishable numbers but some for sure.I'm with the guys suggesting getting permission to fish private ponds...that said tho I've caught several 7 to 8.5lb fish from small public waters here in Iowa...never a 10 but there are some around.Probably 8 of my biggest 10 bass in almost 20 years of fishing have been in the last 5 or 6 years...not from the same body of water and there has been no magic bait. One thing id say has been key for me is fish when other people wont...probably 4 or 5 of those 8 biggest have been in very early spring or very late fall when they "wont" bite...many days I get 1 bite but I'll tolerate crap weather and a long fishless period for a stud..just saying even if it's cold or overcast and windy or rainy or all of the above keep your head down and drag a jig or slow roll a spinnerbait and hold on cuz it can happen.

Randy VanDam Kevin’s brother caught the Ohio state record smallmouth at 9.5 lbs. I saw a 9 lb plus caught a few years back near Conneaut Ohio Lake Erie waters. So it stands to reason there are a few 10 lb largemouth bass still swimming in Ohio waters.

Ive never been to Kent but it appears to be a fairly populated area with lots of water. The pond suggestions are coming from people because the odds are better for a 10 lber there. It’s possible in the public waters but less likely. We are just trying to give you suggestions on how to gain access to big bass. In a larger town/city you don’t have to get invited to a VFW, there should be all kinds of places and people to talk fishing with and potentially gain access to a lunker spot. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that, you’ve just got to fish the public water hard and hope for some good luck. A 10 lb bass from public water in Ohio could be hard to come by, I would try Erie if that was my goal.

I would agree
Not sure about Ohio but up here with your neighbor Michigan, our natural resources agency puts out an annual report with the tournament data since we are required by law to report such things. Along with a bunch of other data, they list the top ten biggest fish weighed and where they were caught. If Ohio has something like that then it would help narrow your search at least.
Kansas produces 10lb largemouth nearly every year and it's not much further south.

Get to my age and you realize that's an exercise in futility. I do think that with your concern for being considerate you'd be well received.
When I lived in the midwest farm ponds were the ticket to bass over 5lbs. Take a day and drive around and visit with folks. Be straight forward and honest - I would send a Christmas card to folks who let me fish.
Nobody gives permission to fish their ponds around here, too big of a liability.
I believe there are some double digit bass to be had in Ohio, and most likely in the strip ponds down in the AEP Recreation area near McConnelsville. I personally have caught one pushing 7 pounds down there and know a guy that caught one close to 9 pounds a week after I caught mine. You just have to work for the big bass down there, and a lot of guys are not willing to do so.
I live in North east Ohio and fish pretty much all over the Eastern part of the state. I can say without a doubt theirs some 10s in Ohio

I don't know all the specifics, but I imagine some of them just go and catch bluegill and other baitfish from other places and bring them back to their pond, even though I'm pretty sure it's illegal, but so is transferring the bass to begin with.

Transferring fish to private waters with the permission of the owner is legal. Transferring fish to public waters is illegal

I appreciate you saying I'm a good guy...not sure how true it is but I appreciate it nonetheless. I was just trying to help you focus on the fun of learning the process of targeting big bass. Big is relative as guys on this site have caught fish twice the size of my PB. I'm just trying to figure out the biggest fish in my local systems and if I run across a 10+ doing so that's even better.

Some very nice fishing in this area.
I never caught anything larger than a 7.
I did catch a 5 fish limit for over 30 lbs though, I had them weighed at the bait shop next to LaDue reservoir
I have also caught several 6's from Mogadore, Portage Lakes, Nimisilla, LaDue, Lake Rockwell and Deer Creek
The Kent Bass team now runs the electric motor only league out of LaDue.
Rory Franks jr is on the KSU team and his dad used to be the tourney director at Ladue.

How’d you fish Rockwell? I’ve been fishing Mogadore a little but I’ve never got anything over 4. Have any secret spots you wanna share lol? As for ladue I’ve caught some nice smallies but no lmb. I live like 15 from Ladue so maybe I should put some more time on the water there. Any advice for me? You seem like you know your stuff
I had to sneak into Rockwell and that was early 90's. I'd put the canoe in up river in a development. Then work my way down. They had a fence that went across but it was smashed up and you could get through.
I have since heard that they reinforced the barrier that blocked access from this way.
There used to be a guy named Mark that ran a baitshop out of his garage on lake rockwell too.
He had some impressive pics of fish caught there.
As soon as the ice breaks fish the breakwall on the 422 bridge.
Not sure if they even let guys walk down there to fish anymore?
This is when guys will catch 5lb+ walleyes. Wait too long and they scatter.
As far as Bass go- the lake has 3 sections North of 422(top), between 44 and 422(middle) and west of 44(bottom).
In the early part of the year I'd fish as far back as I could in the bottom part of the lake.
There is a defined channel that cuts thru there and bass will spawn in the shallower areas.
If you see a piece of wood, flip something to it.
As the year gets later and bass move out, I move deeper and fish the humps/islands in the middle and the top section.
I'll mark some places on the map.
The humps will show themselves later in the summer as the weeds grow to the top.
You can rotate between the humps and at some part of the day the fish will be on/near them.
sometimes they move right to the top, other times they will be hanging off to one side and I have found quite a few times they will be 20-30 feet off of the bottom of the hump in the deepest water.
There is a sunken bridge out from the boat launch, its a money spot when they are on it.
At the dam there is a channel that the original creek followed, there are some stumps that are on the bottom if you can find these, they can be a gold mine.
Red circles represent areas where there are humps that come to within 5 feet or so of the surface
Good luck, still my favorite lake to fish.
I have not fished there in several years and most of my experience was from the 90's - 2008ish
Good luck!!

For the start of the year should I fish below 44?

Red circles represent areas where there are humps that come to within 5 feet or so of the surface
Good luck, still my favorite lake to fish.
I have not fished there in several years and most of my experience was from the 90's - 2008ish
Good luck!!
Have you had any luck with smallies?
The top section of the lake is where I have caught all my smallies.
I got into a school of them early in the year in that top right hand side about 100 yards from the dam
I caught about 10 that were over 3 and the biggest was a little over 5
We went back the next week and still caught a few but not like the magic I stumbled on the week before
Other than that my smallmouth catches were 1 here and 1 there.
I like fishing below 44 in the spring as that is where I have seen the biggest fish caught
I would fish the middle section quite a bit leading up to summer
After June or so I'd just cycle between those humps that get weeds on them
At different times of the day, the bass would pull up on them and would be feeding pretty good
so it was a timing deal

What were you typically throwing when you were fishing for smallies and lmb under 44?

I never caught anything larger than a 7.
I did catch a 5 fish limit for over 30 lbs though, I had them weighed at the bait shop next to LaDue reservoir
I have also caught several 6's from Mogadore, Portage Lakes, Nimisilla, LaDue, Lake Rockwell and Deer Creek
The Kent Bass team now runs the electric motor only league out of LaDue.
Rory Franks jr is on the KSU team and his dad used to be the tourney director at Ladue.

Do you focus on the east finger when it comes to mogadore?
I threw cranks or flipped something at cover
I fished a DT 7 a bunch, I think they stopped making it but any crank will do as long as its bouncing off the bottom
I flipped a lot of creature baits and crawfish type trailers at that time
As it moved toward summer I tossed a carolina rig with a lizard on it
(a couple guys that used to always win at LaDue always tossed the carolina rig and they would slowly reel it in, so i mimicked them with success. The typical drag and wait was not as successful)

Why don’t you fish ladue anymore?

I wouldn't rely much on what you see in the tube.

Obviously
I watched the video against my better judgement. You could tell the cops had no clue what they were talking about. If I had to guess, some one seen him taking big bluegills from a public body of water and knew where he was going to put them. They got butt hurt then called and made a complaint against him.
Now back on topic

I moved to TN around 2008
I love that I dont have to put the boat away in the winter
Although I fish Chickamauga half a dozen times a year, LaDue is still my favorite lake
Up by the dam you can fish deep and target smallmouth
West of 44 fills in with weeds and lily pads and you can flip/punch to get to the largemouth buried deep in the cover
In the middle section you can fish the channel swings and the flats directly adjacent to them. There is a mix of weeds and wood. Fishing the causeway or the 422 bridge was almost always productive.
The lake had what seemed like millions of white perch in it
Bass chomped on those things and got big
every panfisherman would complain to no end about them also my dad because he always threw finesse type baits

I didn’t know ladue was so great. I’m really excited for spring now.

I just did. That’s a cool story. On a 6’ rod too...must have been a crazy fight

My point is 2 LMB over 10 lbs in the last 40 years means the odds are very small another DD bas will be caught in the foreseeable future.
If your goal is a DD bass plan a trip to where your odds are good.
