Sup guys!
So yesterday was my bday and between the wife and my mom have some cash specifically for fishing
I've been using a Scorpion 1001XT but the 6:1 is driving me nuts I've had violent strikes but by the time I reel down to set the hook the fish already spit it. Not often but it's happened. So I've been determined to get the fastest reel I can get. I'll be pitching and random short roll casts so line capacity is least of my concerns.
I've been dead set on the metanium XG. But now I'm seeing this Zillion in 9:1 looks like the IPT on the Daiwa is almost 4inches more with a full spool. But here's a drawback the one I would buy is mag sealed and to my knowledge only Daiwa can service it but I contacted Daiwa of America and they said won't service the JDM models. Same thing with Shimano but I can work on my own Shimanos.
Am I better off just sticking with the Met? I would over time eventually buy a Zillion to try it out.
It's going on a 7'1" MH/XF *** and 12# Sniper or Assassin will be the line.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
There is a metanium 101XG that just showed up in the fishing flea market for sale at a great price
Find a used tdz type r+, throw in the 7:1 gear upgrade, catbontex and bocas. Enjoy.
Don't lower the rod tip and reel down. Keep the rod in a strike ready position, reel and swing quickly.
Tatula R 100XS 8:1 works for me for this application.
Take a look at Oldschool Horizontal Jigging thread on this site.

Daiwa is supposed to be bringing out an SV103 soon. Old zillion body, SV spool and I think 7.9 gears. Should be absolutely perfect.

Completely understand your reasoning.
For another option, JLS has left hand Exsence DC's for $240ish. I have one on one of my jig rods and love it, 8:1 and DC braking on the Chronarch D frame/body. Metanium XG would never be a bad choice though .

100% agree with this.
I use a Metanium XG

I was looking at that actually. DVT kinda steered me away from the DC braking.

What is wrong with the DC breaking system?
Sounds like your are trying to justify buying another reel
Back in the day (90s) jig fishing could be done with a 5:1 reel. They keep getting faster and faster and faster.

I've worked on several DC Calais that were bone dry and beginning to seize with a light tan costing on everything. I've talked with other techs that have seen the same thing. Shimano was of no help when I talked to them. Probably just didn't reach the right person but non the less it's a mystery still.
I have two football jig rods, a flippin rod, and a finesse jig rod. I use a Met XG and Chronarch HG on my football jig rods, a Curado HG on my flippin rod, and a Chronarch on my finesse jig rod. A Curado HG pics up plenty of line IMO, but if you have the budget to get the Met XG then you should get it. It is a pure pleasure to fish.
idk lol the amount of fishing i do is insane 3-4 practice days a week plus 40-50 tourneys so I think it was an abuse thing. On 11/7/2015 at 2:51 AM, kickerfish1 said:What is wrong with the DC breaking system?

Well there ya have it lol
Hmmm. So be it. Perhaps the reel was used in salt or it wasn't taken care of. I have never heard of that issue but yet again I dont own a Calais DC.
Purchase what you want but I know I will be adding a second Exscence DC and a Met XG.

Is this issue specific to the DC Calais reels or Shimano's DC systems in general? Should I be expecting the same issue on my Scorpion DC down the road at some point?

I would personally wait until the SV 103 comes out but who knows when that will be. The TWS Zillion can be had for under $200. If I needed a reel quickly, especially in a 9.1, I would go that route.
Just pulled the trigger order Met XG from JLS. Stupid PayPal ended up using the wrong conversion rate so I ended up paying $9.xx more than what I was supposed to. Called them and they gave me 5 different answers. Smfh anyhow $282.27 still want to get that zillion though lol
the JDM model is in the $230 range, is mag sealed and US version is not. You're right, I didn't realize the US version wasn't mag sealed. The JDM reels have a little more style too.
The Met XG should be a sweet reel!
I can't wait! 2 more Omens and a Tat HD then my next purchase hopefully in Spring will be a Triton or Ranger. On 11/7/2015 at 8:17 AM, Jrob78 said:You're right, I didn't realize the US version wasn't mag sealed. The JDM reels have a little more style too.

Had a Triton now in a Skeeter. Can't beat a Skeeter IMO!
I have a Metanium XG on my jig rod(7'1 H Zodias) and I love it
I was dead set on a Skeeter until I was in one on Champlain. Locally any lake in the area it can handle no prob but big water it seems the other 2 handle better. My buddy has a 21 TRX and my FX 20 handles rough water better IMO but to each their own. And yes they are all good lol you really can't go wrong no matter what you buy. If I had the money I would trade mine in for a FX 21 LE but I don't have 68K lol

Really? Was my birthday too!
I ordered an Ambassadeur 4600c3 (used, in good condition; they don't make this one any longer). It's going on a 6'6 M/F Daiwa for slightly lighter lures.
My heavy jig reel is a modified 5500c3.
Happy birthday!

I'm approaching becoming an old fart. I remember when 5 to 1 reels were considered "high speed". 5 to 1 reels aren't so easy to find now. Anyway, I currently use Curado and Chronarch 50's to jig fish with. They are 6 something to one, 6.4 to one I think. Anyway, if I miss a fish, I'm thinking operator error and not blaming the reel for not being fast enough. That being said, I don't have any experience with the reels you are talking about.
Get one of the OG Zillions. Since the new ones came out, there seem to be quite a few deals to be had on the older ones. My OG Zillion SHLA matched w/ Zillion 7' MH/F is a pretty sweet jig combo as far as I'm concerned.

LMAO!
8.5:1 or 9.1:1 is 36-40.3" per handle turn!
I use a Calcutta with a 5.8:1 or 28" per handle turn & I never have more than 1 possible 2 handle turns of slack.
Handling big water has more to do with the operator than the boat!

Allow me to reiterate. When I work a jig my Rod is 99% of the time at 12 o'clock. If I feel something I crank down to 3-4 o'clock then cross its eyes. One thing I think people don't take into consideration is the reel I've been using which yes it's a 6:1 but it's also a US 50 size. If I'm half way down on line from a long cast 1 handle turn might only be 12" of line so getting down to 3-4 o'clock is like 5-6 turns before the line is taught. This reel I'm literally re-spooling weekly, after xx amount of reties break offs etc IPT is greatly reduced rather quickly. So in my case the faster the reel the better for me. State tourney trail, 2 clubs, few dozen opens, plus numerous practice days on the water, year in year out the jig has been my bread and butter.
Really!
If a reel my Calcutta is a 5.8:1 & 28" of line per turn of the handle.
You think that is measured at full spool or empty?
And I seriously doubt you fish more days a year than I do!

Most measurements depend on drag setting and empty or full spool hence the Calcutta is rated such as 23-28 23 empty spool 28 full spool.
Idk if I've fished more than you a year but I've definitely cashed more checks than you

So ya don't think it has anything to do with the circumference of the spool and the gear ratio?
I highly doubt ya cashed more checks!
Nice try though
Double post. Please delete.
I just received my 4600c3. It had 5.3:1 gears in it, so I upped it to 6.3:1 for 31.2ipt (actual, measured, full spool).
My other two main reels still run 26ipt, including my jig rod. Though I may up my frog rod, I like my jig rod where it's at.
I've enjoyed this thread. There are so many fishing styles that are different than mine, and I have learned to adopt elements of each.
Nobody can tell another what fishing style will work best for him, but open sharing of info makes every person who willing to experiment just a little bit better.
Josh
Paying a 100% more for a high end baiting reel to save 1/2 oz and have bearings on anything that turns doesn't make the reel more functional for bass fishing. I could cast over 50 yards with my Langley Lure Cast 60 years ago, you rarely need to cast over 40 yards when bass fishing. Gear ratio's and IPT are only meaningful when the spool diameter is also factored in. The reels drive train needs to be smooth and provide torque to overcome lure retreive resistance, have a good clutch (drag) to prevent line breakage. The reel doesn't crank in the bass, the rod fights the bass, the reel keeps the rod loaded and recovers line as the fish gets closer to you.
If you hold the rod tip upright near 12 o'clock while working a jig as the normal position, feel a strike and lower the rod tip down you just missed a bass unless the fish still has the jig in it's mouth and hasn't spit it out. Holding the rod tip upright also creates additional slack line and a lose of contact with the jig. Controlled slack is the essential element in jig fishing, master that to improve your success.
Catt has proven his jig fishing skills and is correct, it's the angler not the equipment that makes the difference.
How do you think we managed to catch thousands of big bass using jigs with the tackle we had 40 years ago, the bass haven't changed!
Tom
There's something to be said for old tackle. New too, but old as well.
The faster IPT of the new reels provide better feedback to the reel handle through the line to let me know when all slack is gone.
On the other hand, the old reels with dog and ratchet stops let me know, through the reel handle, when something actively hits the lure.
I would like to build one reel, anyway, without the anti-reverse bearing, using a dog and ratchet instead, but with fast gears.
Anyway, since they both have their uses, I'll keep using both old and new together.
Problem with this thread? Nobody's wrong!
Josh

Gotta be honest I don't like how it palms at all. My stupid short fingers. It looked like it would palm like the E series Chronarchs. Can't wait to fish it either way.

This handle is crazy long. I was under the assumption the longer one in Japan was equal to the standard size here. I was way off lol

Sounds like we have similar techniques. Difference is, I've never bass fished at night. Probably should try it. I've always joined friends for catfishing at night.
That looks like a really nice reel. Not sure about the brakes -- will watch for the answer on that as I'm curious, too.

5lb smallies at night, incredible! It's so much fun. Hate bats flying around though.

Yeah idk how I feel about the top section where I normally rest my index finger. It's feels like a 90 degree angle like the Tats. Plus it's farther up. I can palm them fine on standard reel seats but not on the *** reel seat my pinky ends up above the trigger, no Bueno. Stupid fingers are short.... It feels good on my Dobyns.. idk the standard Fuji seat? Really awkward on the Irod skeletal seat. Pack bay minima I think. Going out Sunday gonna try both shallow 3/8oz jigs on a point and then heave out some 1/2-3/4oz footballs to some 20-30ft structure. See if I can get a bite going. May throw a spinnerbait too. That will give me a good idea on how I feel about the handle before I decide to switch it out.
LOL!! How bout an old school beastmaster?! Wasnt that a 2 speed reel? Pair it up to an old school shimano bullwhip rod while your at it!!!
