Now, when I say "impress", im speaking in relative terms. I'm looking to get a really cheap combo to use in the salt.
Pflueger Trion series. $40 reels that act like $100 reels. I've got one going on it's fourth season.
Casting or Spinning?
Rainbow BM1000 spinning reel off ebay and its going on its 4th season and just needs a good cleaning. It has never given me any problems while I was out fishing with it and its a cheapo brand out of japan I believe. I paid $24 for it including shipping as I remember and its still around..
QuoteCasting or Spinning?
Looking for casting primarily.
Bass Pro Shops Extreme, A few of my friends really like these. Catch theme on sale at 59$ I'm not overly impressed but I'm kind of a snob. My old one does dependable duty.
As far as casting reels, see sig. I fish almost daily and my PQ's are still like the day I got them. Only thing I've done is regular maintenance on them.
Cheap to you may be different from another person, just remember that. There are people on here that have some ridiculous gear that consider anything less cheap.
I have had really good success with the cabelas prodigy baitcaster. It usually sells for 99.00 but I have picked up a few for as low as 54.00 to 59.00 dollars. They are made by Daiwa. I can't imagine there is a better reel out there for 60 bones.
Citica 200E

Or a shimano FX
Abu Garcia Orra SX
The most inexpensive will be the two Revo S's I bought new for $67.97 each. They are not cheap but were very inexpensive. The other would be the Revo SX for 109.97
Pinnacle Extant HS Metal baitcast.
Pfluger President, spinning.
Several seasons on both of these reels with no decline in feel or performance.
new in box from a retail store...
pinnacle solene. this reel is awesome for the money. ive owned three and to my knowledge the two i gave away are still running strong and the one i have still throws my unweighted plastics with ease.
spinning would be the quantum incyte. its 11bearings or smooth goodness. i have the first one i baught 3 or 4 years ago and it has been in salt water and fresh almost every weekend since... and it still feels like the day i got it. doesnt look like it... but fishes like it. i use that one solely for salt now and have a new one for fresh.
if youre going to to the ebay type route its really hard to beat the quantum accurist pt. you can find them n.i.b. for like 50 bucks. they were 139 brand new in the day. great reel. if i were you id try to find the accurist salt water... pts. its one of the best reels i own period and you can probably find it pretty cheap. i dont know about that one though.. i havent looked.
good luck!
Quantum Iron IR3 from 1990s. $40, still lives.
QuoteQuantum Iron IR3 from 1990s. $40, still lives.
true. i have one of those and am using it for cranking.. lol.. im like the third owner and it feels like new. lol.
Probably a Quantum Accurist. I have picked them up used online for $30, and every once in a while they will go on sale at Cabelas for around $60.
Casting: Cabelas Prodigy or Quantum Accurist PT
Bass Pro Shops Extreme Baitcasting Reel... currently on sale for $60. Very durable, smooth reeling, and great casting. It honestly keeps up everybit with my shimanos and revos, plus you get two or three for the price of one more expensive reel. I was skeptical at first but have found them to be the best bargain by far in the world of reels.
Quantum Exceler or Cabelas Prodigy
QuoteQuantum Exceler or Cabelas Prodigy
I hate to tell you this, but Daiwa makes the Exceler-- not quantum.
Quantum Accurist PT.
Quantum Accurist - good reel for the cost.
I would have to agree with kikstand about the solene I have had one for a while and it has given me no problems with heavy use. I use it primarily in fresh water but it has been in the salt a few times.
Daiwa exceler-$35
Another vote for Daiwa Exceler. One of my favorite reels and most used. I also have a Bionic Plus BPS reel that gets the job done for the money.
This thread needs new life. The reel that I have been the most impressed with lately is the H2O Xpress Mettle reel from Academy Sports. Put some reel grips on mine and they run competition with my Citicas as to which goes for a boat ride. Check them out here.

Six-pin centrifugal braking that resembles the Citica's, 10 bearings, casts a mile with light lures and I've had very minimal backlashes. Quiet and smooth.
Whatever you buy, get one that is a saltwater reel or at least saltwater approved. Not only does the salt environment take it's toll but the strength of ocean fish puts a lot of stress on your equipment.
Will this be used for inshore fishing with artificial or a bait set up. Offshore, pier or beach? What is your target species and how big is the average fish? How long do you want this reel to last?
I would pay more attention to these factors than to name a specific brand. Any cheap reel will be fine for awhile.........
I would suggest keeping an eye on our Flea Market and
picking up a Citica.

And now at 35 bones, it 's a no brainer deal.

copy that, before mine flew off the boat in 30 ft of water, i considered it the best within my arsenal

I've been eyeballing that one. I take it you like it?

It's a smooth, reliable reel that's been around for quite a while now.

FWIW, it's also known as the Procaster 6+1. A quick Google search will turn up a ton of info.

Agreed, hands down. Had one for years and it's doing well! Of the newer models at retail, the Daiwa Exceler would get my vote.
Quantum Bill Dance Select Baitcasting Combo... I know it's not JUST a reel, but for $49.99 (mine was $60 when I bought it) it's the best rod AND reel I have used. Perfect for all around use and it can take a beating.
Here's my $.02 worth about the Procaster,

Buy them up while you still can
How about the Abu C3 4600? $80 and lasts forever. Nothing but the fashion police says a casting reel has to be low profile.

i have one to got it for free and it needed a littlw work but all i did was oil and grease it up and its fine for slop fishi ng and swimbaits
would it be out of line if i said used Daiwa Fuego?

...and today TW dropped the price on the Daiwa Procaster to $29.99
BPS Carbonlite. SO nice to fish with for 120

Holy Inflation Buster Batman!!
That did it for me.....I'm in for two....maybe three.

Think about this, I fish with TDZs, Pixies, Alphas, Chronarchs n 'such I think it 's a great reel, it was a great 70 dollars reel, at $30 is a no brainer deal.
Pflueger President
Shimano Sedona
The BPS Pro Qualifier in baitcast, and the Pflueger President spinning reels are really good, inexpensive choices IMO.
Daiwa Strikeforce. They don't suck.
At $89.99 the Shimano Caenan CAE100 destined to become a legend
At $99.99 the Shimano Cardiff CDF100A is already a legend
QuoteThis one:And now at 35 bones, it 's a no brainer deal.
holy poop.
that is the first baitcaster i ever bought and it is still my t-rig reel. it is flawless. i never even THINK of worrying about that reel. i got mine for 70 bucks or so.... i think imma get a few more at 30!!! OMG!!!
Might have to give one of those Cabelas Prodigy reels a try.

Thanks for the review, I might pick up one of these as a spare for when a buddy who wants to come fishing with me.
I got a Daiwa Samurai spinning combo at Dick's a while ago, the reel has quite a bit of the features that their higher priced reels do. It its quite quite smooth and comes without any line on it, leaving it open for you to put what you want on it. I've been really impressed with it and it's completely worth the $25.00 I spent on it.

I love this one. 5'6" rod, light power. Spooled up with 6lb mono, this was an absolute blast during the spring and early summer. I got my PB (6.5lbs) and a 5+ bass on this.
Finally the bale of the reel came apart after almost daily usage over 3 months, and I retired the old warrior.
It was worth a helluva lot more than the 20$ I paid for it, and way more than it's retail price of 40$. Now-a-days they are on sale at my local Dick's for 15$ or so I think.

I got mine in the 6'6" medium with the 2500 series reel, i've had it since june and it's still like the day I bought it, I have been maintaing it though, seems to be working. 8-)
for my spinning set-up i have an Abu Garcia cardinal 102 reel . i bought it for 28 bucks and it has suprised me for being such a smooth strong reel . i had bought it for trout fishing but realized it was a better reel than i thought when purchasing it . i have now been using it as my main spinning set-up and bought a cheapo Diawa spinning reel for trout .

I have that same reel - bought it at Dick's this year as a combo paired with a Berkley Cherrywood rod for around $40. I don't have any experience with more expensive models or brands, but I really like this setup.

My Shimano Spirex 2500FG amazes me with its smoothness. It's a great all around reel and fantastic for crankbaits on my All Star American Classic 6'6" M/MF.
bps pro qualifier
Pfleuger Templar from Wal Mart. Smooth and casts very well.
I think we are talking spinning reels, cheapest and best imo is a toss up between abu cardinal 100 series, less than $35 smooth and durable, and pflueger trion.
The Abu 170 series for saltwater about 50 bux is decent buy, but Pflueger Medalist is imo is the best value in saltwater out there, my medalist compares to my soron, quantum cabo, stradic fi and fin-nor in every aspect except a bit heavier but at a fraction of the price. This one is a winner.
Another vote for the Pflueger Trion. It performs as good as or better than my higher end reels. It is also one of my favorites. I have had it for several years and do alot of kayak fishing. It is constantly getting dunked in the drink and keeps on ticking.
