Last week 00mod & I pulled the trigger on a spur of the moment 4 ½ day trip to our favorite Big Bass Lake on the planet, and once again Lake Baccarac Lodge in Mexico did not disappoint.
Our guide Manual (Mexico’s Best), had us on good bass at our very first spot and the action was hot & heavy for our entire trip. Jigs, scroungers and flukes were our go to baits and the super charged Lake Baccarac Bass were in an feeding mood.
Now I’ve heard stories about how there are times on this lake when it’s a bass on every cast but until this trip I’d not experienced it. However during several extended periods of both our morning & afternoon sessions, it was literally a bass on every cast with well over 400 hundred 2-4 lb bass coming to the boat in 4 ½ days of fishing. It was a little nuts, but in a good way.
The last two days of this epic trip, the really big bass that this lake is known for began to feed. Jeff & I both landed several bass between 5 and 7 pounds along with 8, 9 and 10 pound trophies.
A few of my favorite pictures appear below and I’m sure 00 mod will have something to add as well.
I’ve said this before but I’m going to say it again, if you have the opportunity, this place is really special.
I highly recommend it.

Had an absolute blast with my good buddy Andy, and the streak remains. Get this people - EVERY TRIP I HAVE TAKEN DOWN THERE, SOMEBODY IN THE GROUP HAS CAUGHT A 10LB OR BETTER BASS!!!!
Looking forward to next time for sure!
Check out the full moon rising over the mountains!
Nice fish.

Sweet trip guys. And the lucky horseshoe lives.

After a few trips I'm sure you guys have your gear fine tuned. So what are you using?

Just like much of bass fishing each of our approaches is often a little different.
For this trip (as well as the last one) I used 20 lb mono exclusively while 00 mod was making it happen with 17 lb fluorocarbon.
As for baits, we worked our way through a few different presentations. It became readily apparent that the fish really wanted a smaller profile bait. There was a very healthy tilapia spawn just recently and the fry were every where, also several fish coughed up 3 inch shad at the boat. So a Zoom Super Fluke (in white) proved to be an effective imitation. Once mounted on a 3/8 ounce Scrounger head the baits action was just right.
I played around with a magnum fluke which is usually a big bass bait there, but couldn't get bit. And while Jeff was hammering them on the Scrounger / Fluke rig, I also tried a spinnerbait, Deep Crank, Square bill, Some top water, A jig and Senko rig, some wacky rigged stick baits, and a Texas rigged lizard. Most everything got a bass or two, and a jig did account for a few of the better bass, but none of my "experiments" came close to drawing the same kind of attention that the bait Jeff was throwing did. So, I after one morning of changing baits every 30 minutes or so, I fished the remaining 3 days of the trip with basically one bait, The Scrounger. The bass's cooperation made it easy.

Rods: (2) 7' m/f Tidemaster 3 piece (keep inmind these are inshore rods so really like a mh+ and the mh is like a h+)
(1) 7'6'' mh/f Tidemaster 3 piece
(1) 6'9'' loomis escape mh/f 3 piece
Reels: 200 size Shimano
Line: 17/20 lb Flouro for me. Andy and Dwight like 20lb mono
1 reel has 50lb braid for topwater and sometimes gets a 20lb mono leader
Lures: most productive is a 3/8 oz long bill scrounger
1/2 to 1 oz jigs
1/2 to 1 oz spinnerbaits
3/4 and 1 oz rattle baits
selection of shallow to deep cranks
selection of topwater
Plastics: small and large zoom flukes for back of scroungers and "rage rigged"
lizards 6'' and 8''
paddle tail swimbaits
5-7'' senkos
trick worms
That pretty much has the basics covered unless I can think of anything else

It has gone to the extreme, i am over my self to catch bass like that.
This is definitely on the bucket list. Nice pics as usual whenever I see a post from Baccarac
Awesome catching guys! One of these days I hope to make that trip.
Wow, what an awesome trip and thank you for sharing the pics!
Nice fish!! I'm unbelievably jealous, you guys go on a trip like that and here i am in Northern Illinois with hard water. And not even enough ice to get out on!

I just did some laundry and dishes...........up yours!!! (code for "I'm jealous). Looked like a great time.
Nice! I am a little jealous, but I enjoy the stories and pictures. I may never get there so I will just have to enjoy vicariously!
I have a sudden hankering for some cheesy nachos and a weak margarita.
I know you guys are ballsy, but how do you keep from getting " Bass Thumb" like down to the bone!
Does your guide net all of them?

We share the duties with the guide - unless we're throwing treble hook baits then our guide insists on handling those - and I kind of prefer that.
Also I wear "Sun Gloves" - which help quite a bit but they do need to be washed out in the sink back at the lodge each night to remove the Stank.

Nice trip again guys! Like bassr95, I'm up here waiting for ice. Was gonna put a trip to Baccarac in the family grab bag this Christmas but limit was $100.00.
You guys were like hawgs in _ _ _ , catching HAWGS! Wow, nice job!

Buddy just wait until after the first of the year. And we can show off the big fish from Pickwick. I was going to brag about going to the Gulf Coast this weekend for 10 days. But after seeing this its not even going to be fun.

Brag away Pete. Every trip has a reason to brag. Never let the adventures of others deter you from bragging about your own!
Jeff
PS- Don't wait for next year to get out on the TN River......the fish are already biting! (Last Month)

Will be after the first before were home to go. Spending Christmas on the beach. Get home the end of the month, then my wife and I will fish 5 days. She is looking forward to Sauger fishing. But more for the eating of fresh sauger.
And I look forward it also, Nothing as good as Fresh Sauger, get them home clean and have them cooked within 30 minutes of swimming around. Along with my homemade HushPuppies and A blooming Onion.
Also know where that pic was taken. Grew up within 300 yds of that spot.
