Hello fellas,
New to site here (nice place BTW) although been bass fishing for 25 years now. I caught the LMB below in a private lake in Georgia on a plastic worm but didn't have a scale with me or a measuring tape. I stand 6' 1" and as you can see I'm doing my best to hold it parallel to my body for scale and NOT extended out towards the camera. By measuring from the middle of my collarbone to the top of my thigh, I figure she was approx. 24" long. Can you guys help me out and venture a guess as to what you think she weighs?
On a side note, I caught this beauty on Father's Day in front of my two kids and I did release her.

That rule was put in for the spammers.
I would guess between 4 and 5 pounds.
i would say 3-4 but what do i know..nice bass none the less tho

Huh?
3lbs is a stretch.

Is that really your guess or are you being sarcastic to the guess of 4-5 lbs being too light?
2.5 - 3 lbs
Most 5 lb largemouth bass have a mouth that an average size man can fit his fist into, seriously.
8-)
id go 3lbs or a little over.
it looks very thick and healthy, i'd say 5lbs.

And me being 6' 1" 205 lbs I'm above average and trust me when I say that my fist could easily fit into this bass' mouth. Note that I'm holding the fish parallel to the front of my body; not at arm's length towards the camera.
BTW How heavy were those fish in your avatar?
The fat one is the hardest fighting freshwater fish I have ever caught, she weighed in just over 7 lbs. The other fish was caught about an hour and a half later. She was nearly 4" longer but only weighed one more pound. That is my PB and was caught, January 2005 below Pickwick Dam on the Tennessee River.

Photos, because of the way lenses work, distort the image -much more than you might realize. It's really hard to judge a fish by a photo. I'd agree with others on the ballpark size of that fish.
Carry at least a measuring tape with you.
Here's a table that offers weights for length for average condition bass. Each half inch can make a big difference, especially with larger bass.

While I know that physical size doesn't always translate into weight, I'm finding it hard to believe you think my fish is 3lbs or under and the two you're holding are somehow twice as heavy yet are not as big lengthwise. I realize you probably weighed those two bass (they are beautiful BTW) so I believe you but think you're erring on the light side with this one.
Mental Note: don't stand next to roadwarrior at the urinals

Now that's kind of what I was expecting. This fish is approx 24" in length and may be off by 1/2 inch at most. It isn't what I would call fat but it IS healthy. Went out last night and bought a scale and measuring tape for the tackle box.
Thanks
Good call, the scale will turn out to be a great investment.
Eddie Munster,
It was not my intention to insult you. The question was "How much does it weigh?"
A suggestion I have made on several occasions is this:
If someone posts a picture and states a weight that they weighed on a scale, that's it and comments should be "congratulations" or just move on. This is not a BassResource.com rule, but simple courtesy.
On the other hand, if someone asks "How much does it weigh?" then GAME ON!
I realize pictures can be misleading, making fish bigger than they are or in many cases, smaller.
So, having seen a few fish and pictures over the years, my guess is less than others, but that doesn't make it right!

No offense taken bud. 8-)
Trust me when I say (and it's seems likely that most men would feel this way) I had my mind made up before I made the post and was just feeling out the community. 25+ years of LMB fishing and that scale Paul Robert's was kind enough to post has been my rule of thumb. 12" = 1 pound 16" = 2 pounds etc......
I will say I'd trade my LMB in for a SMB (they are SMB aren't they?) half the size of the ones you got there. Fight would be twice as good IMO.
Cheers.
Cheers!
id say around 4.5lbs from the pic. scales dont always work. i caught a 21.5 incher that was 7lbs. dont have too much faith in the "calculations" only a sclae and a measuring tape ;D
3.9lbs. Part of it's tail is missing, otherwise she would of went 4lbs.

;D
It is there if you look closely; the fish flared the top of it's tail to the left side of it's body.
I have caught 2 lbr's that look like this fish. Maybe it is 2.5 lbs

lol 24" and 2.5 lbs............please allow me to introduce the first LMB Calvin Klein model. It eats a ton of shad but throws it up about 20 minutes later.
So.......how much does the fish in your avatar weigh?
here is it is. the length from my foot to knee is about 24". this bass weighed in at 2.7lbs or 2lbs 11oz.
No disrespect intended but that fish is no where near 24" nor as big as mine. Again, I am not offended by people's guesses cause they really are entertaining. ;D

Agreed. As I said I'm 6'1" tall and from the sole of my foot to the top of my knee is 20.5 inches and unless Gannoli is 6' 5" his lower leg isn't 24" either.
i am amending my earlier 3lb guess, and putting this fish at just over 15oz's. 2lbs 1oz were lost on style points, as you failed to capitalize on the #1 rule of fish and pictures: FORESHORTENING. the effect is there for you. use it.

lmao....well played sir.
Judging from the pictures I've seen on the site so far, I'm beginning to see that I did indeed err by not doing so. Guess it's just assumed all people do it so it does affect people's estimation when someone actually post a picture with something to scale it next to. Mine may be one of the only ones here without 'foreshortening'. Oh well, I'll know better next time.
y'all keep this up PLEASE. it's much more entertaining than anything on tv so far today.
seriously, i'm not gonna register a guess, but nice fish eddie regardless of what it weighed. good catch man.
A little over 3 I would guess. Go buy a scale! Its the best investment I have made this year.
4lbs no more
I would say 3.5-4.5 Definitely not the 8lbs the chart says it was. I thought I was catching massive fish until I bought a scale. That scale put me back in my place. ;D
What do you think your fish weighed?
I am 6' 3" 185. I will post a 4lb 3 oz fish for you to compare to.

Is that the 4lb 3 oz fish you think my fish weighs less than? :-?
I'm guessing my fish is a SOLID 3 inches longer and just as thick looking. No offense bud; that fish you posted is about 19-20 inches long and yeah about 4 lbs AND smaller than the fish I posted.
What do I think my fish weighs? I guess I'm taking into account that the photo is to scale so fish is actually 23+ inches (not held out to the camera to appear bigger) and venturing a guess on some of the lunkers posted here that are of equal size or smaller, 6+ pounds.
Keep em coming; this really is entertaining. 8-)

Yes it is. Like mentioned before, its really hard to tell by a picture. You also have to take into account that I am holding mine behind me not in front of me. You really aren't even in the picture with yours. I have no clue how long my fish is, I don't feel the need to measure mine. Just like humans, length doesn't determine ones weight.
I know for an absolute fact my fish is 4lbs 3ozs. I posted it to show our fish look very similar. (To me I guess..?) I agree yours may be a little longer, but 2lbs more mght be a stretch.
With that said, theres no doubt its a nice fish. I'm not trying to take anything away from your catch, I'm just being straitforward. I'd expect you to do the same for me!
This is just my honest opinion, afterall, you asked...
Quote3.9lbs. Part of it's tail is missing, otherwise she would of went 4lbs.
Having the full picture would get you a better weight approximation. Having you as a "control" to compare against helps.
On that note, I'm with T-Rig, maybe a hair under 4.
3.75-4lbs.
The bigger point is that as long as it went back in the water, she could easily be 5-5.5 the next time you see her
"Just like humans, length doesn't determine weight. " --I'm stealing that
A couple 3.5-4lbrs to compare to:
Judging from Eddies pic I am going to say 4.75. Its a nice fish. Eddie keeps saying 24inches. Well thats just a guess and I disagree with that. regaurdless of how tall Eddie is and how far he is NOT sticking it out there is always the tell tale hand. I would guess that fish at around 19-21 inches and close to 5lbs but a little under. Now becuase there is only one pic and its at an odd angle, and it is cropped so you cant see the fish compared to Eddie I could be off by 1/2lb either way.
Also when ever a fish is not weighed it is almost always smaller then the angler thinks it is. First off by not having a scale that means that the fisherman does not weigh his fish regularly. So he is bound to be off. When he or she gets a good fish they are way off in there guess. The bigger the fish the more they are off. Just recently a member posted a pic of a "12" lb bass. then he used the exact same pic and the caption read 10lbs. He also mentioned in a different post he needed to buy a scale. The fish was only 7-8lbs but nobody jumped on him. I think most of the guys here are easy going and let it slide. If you want people to guess then be preparred to hear what you dont want to hear. If you buy a scale then be preparred to face reality. If you want to avoid all of it then just post a pic of the nice bass you caught without saying how much you think it weighed or how long you think it was.
I just caugh twin 6lbers. One was 6 exactly and the other was 6.1. I guessed them both at 6lbs. However earlier this year I had my best year catching many bass over 8lbs and quite a few over 10. In the beginning I was off by at least a pound but after I caught a few and weighed them I got pretty good at it.
My advise to everybody is go buy 2 scales. A good digi one and a cheap spring one. That way when you think the digi is lying to you you can check it agint the spring on and see it wasnt.
Warning, you might not like what the scale tells you.
Guys. Theres no way to tell for sure unless you have the fish measured or weighed officially. There are so many factors such as how the picture is taken and the size of the person holding the fish....
Here are some fish I have caught!
This is a Koi I caught last year. It was 11 LBS 5 OZ.
In the picture it looks about 7 LBS I think. I am holding the fish close to me and I am pretty far away from the camera.
Here is a Largemouth Bass I caught the other day. It was 4LBS 7 OZ. Several anglers on here said it looked bigger than that. One guy said it looked to be about 6 LBS. Thing is I am standing very close to the camera in this pic AND I am holding the fish out.
Also I am a lot thinner in the Bass Pic. I have ben going to the gym and have lost 25 lbs between the two pics. I am not as big myself in the second picture.
There are a lot of factors with cameras and stuff you know...
Anyway nice bass I would guess high 3 LB range to low 4 LB range. Your holding it VERY close to you.
Well, I reposted the uncropped picture since to give you guys a look at my mug as well as the bass in question to address the scale issue.
Mattlures disagrees with my measuring and I respect his opinion; I measured myself from right about the center of my collarbones (just below in fact) and down to the tops of my thighs or at bottom of groin. This is where the fish scales to and that comes out to be just under 24". So the measurement might be off an inch at most and is most certainly NOT a guess. In regard to the tell tale hand; I do have big hands for my size; not banana hands but there above average. You can tell that my hand would EASILY fit into this girl's mouth.
I thank all of you for posting and guessing.
No, thank you for posting! Next time use your new scale and weigh it before you put it on here, then let us guess. I like threads like this, keep them coming!

Roger that.........just gotta catch another one. 8-)
I'm a little late on this, but I'd say either side of four pounds.
Actualy Eddie after looking at the non cropped pic the fish does look a little longer. I still dont think its 24 but 21-22 is quite believable. I would have to add about a lb to my first estimate. I dont think its 6 but it might be. It Just looks a little to thin. Heck your not even an ugly guy you should have posted it that way to begin with ;D
No way that fish is under 4lbs.

Awww..........
Actually I cropped it because I was unsure of how big a picture we were allowed to post.
The fish was probably still depleted after spawning and not yet back up to it's 'fighting weight'. Thanks for reviewing it though.

OK. But this one I caught today was missing part of it's tail and it did weigh 3.9lbs. (I hate self portraits).
I'd say the original picture on the first post of this thread weighed somewhere between 3 1/2 and 4 1/2lbs. I'd just go ahead and call it 4lbs even. She's definately not a 5lber but at the same time she's bigger than a 3
