Yeah I'm curious if that is a guesstimate? I swear my scale was broke, this was 8.15 on my scale and looks much larger.

Your fish is what an 8 lb bass looks like, big head, broad back.  The first time most people (myself included) see a LMB over 7 lbs up close, it is so shocking that we believe it has got to be over 10 lbs.  For me, it took catching 3 over 7 lbs to get the scale in my head right for a bass like yours.

fishing user avatarJanderson45 reply :

To the original poster- beautiful bass, something to be proud of no doubt!  That said, I’d bet a kidney that it’s well below 10lbs ;).

fishing user avatarTravisVirginiaAngler reply :

Not being a jerk...., but that's not a 10 pound bass. And believe me.. I hate the guys who get on here and crap all over posts, because they are jealous, but unless you're like 7 feet tall with massive hands... that looks no larger than a 7 pound bass. Did you get an official weight? Length? Girth? Nice catch, but 10 pounder? Cmon man.

Scale, no scale, guesstimated, or expertly estimated matters not.  That's an awesome fish and you should definitely be proud.

Whenever I pull in a 4 pounder I still think,  "ITS A 7 POUNDER!!!!!"

I didn't wanna to say anything but I will since everyone else did. I would have to see that thing hanging on a scale at 10.00 to believe it. It looks more like a solid 6 lbs. I remember once in a tournament when I first began tourny fishing I flipped a jig/craw next to a stump buried deep in some lilly pads. One hammered it and I swear I thought it was easily 4-5lbs. I got so excited as most of the time a 4 lb bass will win big bass in our evening club tournaments. I put that thing on the scale before dropping him in the live well - 2.67 lbs LOL. Still a solid fish. I placed in the top 5 that day.

No fish weighs as much as the eye test says it does - IMO.

It looks almost like this bass's identical twin. I was amazed this fish was only 6.5 lb. I thought the scale must be inaccurate.

Nice bass. It looks like a 4.5-5 pound bass that you are long arming very close to the camera lens.

This 6.5 pounder would be well over 7.5 pounds if it had more girth. How long was it? I use to believe that the scale was the final answer but even a scale can be off. I know a guy down here that caught a bass that was barely 23 inches long with a girth under 18 inches yet his scale said +10 pounds. It is safe to say his scale is off big time since a bass with a 23 inch length/sub 18 inch girth is 7-8 pounds at best.

Thank you @Joshua van Wyk. I have been bass fishing for +23 years now and have lost count of the bass I have weighed. A bass has to be at least 25-26 inches long with a 18-19.5 inch girth minimum to weigh 10 pounds based on my experience. The scale can be off both ways where it can underestimate or overestimate the weight of a bass. Lots of people are using scales that are not certified which is why it would be best to always get a length and girth measurement picture.

It definetly shows! That fish is my "official" pb at 4.7 lb 21 inches. I've been bass fishing for most my life but I've only gotten serious about it in the last 2 years. BR  has definetly been a giant help to me.

A 21 inch bass is a very nice bass that any bass fisherman would be happy catching. Bass fishing is hobby that you will learn for a lifetime. Yes BassResource is a awesome forum and I have learned many new techniques from members here.

@soflabasser I tried to quote you, but I kept getting the other person's quote. I have no idea of the length of the 6.5 lb. bass in my pic. But I went home and weighed a 10 lb dumbbell weight with that scale and it was very close. Assuming the 10 lb. weight weighed 10 lbs.

Sounds like the scale you are using was accurate enough to get a good weight of the bass. I would say that bass was at least 23 inches, but it is hard to tell from only looking at 1 picture. Next time you can measure a bass on a bump board and use a flexible tape to get the girth. I agree many people do not understand how heavy 10 pounds really is and your 10 pound weight is a good example. Another good example is a gallon of water which weighs a little over 8 pounds. Which means if the bass does not fell as heavy as a gallon of water it probably is under 8 pounds. With that said any bass over 5 pounds is a very nice catch that any bass fisherman would be happy catching.

Absolutely. In a whole lot of waters (probably most of the country that has bass) a 6 pounder is as big as they get. I have a friend up north that tells me they just don't get much over 4 lbs. there.

It does look more like a 6lb in the picture, but pictures can be misleading. It looks like a very long fish, but doesn't look as fat as most 10+ lb bass I've seen.

The real question is did he weigh it and on an accurate scale....

Earlier this year I caught one I swore was about a 9.5 and a new pb (I typically get a couple over 8 every year, and my pb was is 9lb 4 oz) but my scale only put it at 8.5.  I tried this same experiment with a 10 pound dumbbell to verify the accuracy and it read the weight as only being 8...it's rough knowing I probably caught a pb that was nearing 10 but my scale was off.

Geez, didn't you guys mommas ever tell you if you can't say nothing nice, don't say nothing at all?

Guy caught a nice fish he's excited about, not one he's submitting for a record of some sort.
