I was enjoying this morning on my recliner in my pj's while drinking coffee and bieng on here. I just got a phone call nobody's wants to hear. here's the story:
A few days ago I got done detailing the boat from inside and out, so I figured let's get the motor checked out while my mechanic's slow and it will be cheaper on me. Well I dropped it off yesterday afternoon when the snow slowed down, I left the cover on so it wouldn't get filled with snow. The one thing I asked was that he leaves it in the shop overnight. Apparently he didn't listen. I got a call from him a couple mins ago saying when he pulled in to his shop this morning he noticed my cover had blown off. He went over there to fix it and noticed my fishfinder was missing. So I gotta leave in a min when he gets back.
The thing that gets me the most is I didn't even lock any of the latches because I thought my boat was staying inside, So where's all my tackle and rods if my fishfinder is missing.
The only thing is killing me I should have known better to leave my stuff in it especially unlocked.

:-/
:'(
Talk to you guys in a little.
Thieves suck. Did your mechanic agree to store it inside when you asked him to?
Sorry to hear this. Thieves are lurking everywhere. I take everything out of my boat. I work too hard to have some idiot just walk by and relieve me of it. Hope you get your stuff back.
Keep us posted dude....hope it was "just" the fishfinder.
AJR
QuoteThieves suck. Did your mechanic agree to store it inside when you asked him to?
If he agreed to and didn't put it inside doesn't he have to take responsibility? That sucks man, thats why I always take pretty much anything of value out of my boat since I can't store it in my garage.
Thats what I was wondering too VABasser.
I have this problem with my mechanic and my car. He leaves it outside even though I ask him to put it inside. If anything got stolen or damaged, it would be a battle of insurance and that would suck because he's my friend. ROCK.......AJR........HARDPLACE!! :-[
Hope he's not in that situation!!!
You are definately going to learn something about the guy you left your boat with.
Good luck Joey, hope things are better than your thinking. That sucks man.
I ran into ALOT of scumbags in my 25 years as a cop...and I must agree that the SCUMMIEST is the common thief. They think that what they do is a "minor" crime, but when you think about the affect on the regular guy, it is staggering. Guy saves up big time for a Lowrance unit and a bung hole steals it. The sad thing is...it's probably another fisherman in the area who is a scumbag. Advice to members here:
Make a small, specific mark on your stuff. Make the mark "in plain sight." Rods, reels, boxes, electronics, etc. Nothing big, just make sure it's the SAME mark on all your stuff. Why?? Most of your gear has no serial numbers. If you have to report it to the police, you tell them about the mark. If you find the item say, on someones boat, or mixed in with their gear, you can tell the cop, "That's mine..see that mark? If you show the cop the SAME mark on all your gear, 99% chance you'll get it back, and maybe the S.Bag gets pinched.
How well do you know you're mechanic and his employees?
Was the boat left inside a fenced in compound?
Here's another tip for stuff that can be removed from your boat, write or scratch the words (Do Not Pawn) on them where it can be seen by all. Kind of gaudy, but effective for those who wish to sell stolen stuff for a quick fix.
Well, just got back a little bit ago. Here's how it went, I left this morning and as I jump in my wife's SUV I noticed my fishfinder on the passenger floor. (I must of taken it out yesterday when I left his shop.) To me this a good sign so I relaxed a little on the way. When I got there he had asked me if there was anything else besides my fishfinder was on the boat and I go on and tell him I got the fishfinder in my car. As we were talking I was walking towards the boat because at this point I just wanted to see what was missing. I got in the boat and was looking around. Luckily I locked my
2 tackle storage boxes, my storage lid (where my batteries and fuel tank are.) and my glovebox.
They got all my rods but 3. (they were home)
I got a new self inflating life vest when they went on sale at Cabela's at the end of the season. Never had one before, I always wanted one. I guess I can say now that I had one and like it. ;D
They even took my JJ's Magic >
I didn't have everything in the boat at the time so my 2 back storage boxes were empty (besides my life vest).
But that's pretty much it from what I can tell. My mechanic is pretty good guy, he helps you out when he can and his rates are always good. He does have a fenced in area with camera's so he let me see how they ( 2 of them) jumped the fence and what they did. On tape it was all of about a min. they were in and out. One guy was in the boat the other was a look out. I seen him yanking on my rods to get them out and I think he broke one of them. That hurt >
My mechanic is calling his insurance company about it on Monday and help if he can. But I know I'm screwed because he has a sign hanging up " Not Responsible for lost or stolen items." He's being sympathetic about it though, he didn't even charge me for looking over the boat until we get everything straightened out. I'm going to try and see if my insurance will cover it.
He did agree to store it inside, as he always does to all of my boat's I had there. But he left early and he forgot to tell the other guy to put it back in. So it was a simple mistake that turned into me being screwed.
I USALLY never have anything in the boat, but this time I left in a hurry to beat the snow and I just forgot. I don't know I guess I'll see on Monday.
As of right now though I'm out 11 rods, my vest and my JJ's
Thanks for the support guys, I'll be back on it a little bit. I just wanted to come on here and give an update. I'm going down to go through the boat and cleaning it all back up again. I was so mad when I got home I backed it back in and closed the door.
Sorry man...that sucks!!!
I bought myself an inflatable vest last year. It's not new, but it's yours if you want it. Let me know.
Alan (bassnajr)
That sucks, bro. Hopefully the video is good quality and the cops can identify them.
Check with your homeowners or boat insurance on your loss.

Thanks for the offer Alan I really appreciate it, but I'll get by. Thank you though that's very kind.
I'll find more out Monday, I hope they at least reimburse me for some of the rods. I know I'm not going to get what I paid for them but some money for them would be nice.
The camera's he has isn't all that great, you can see what's going on but it's kinda blurry. (like a cheap baby cam quality)
On a good note, I found my little cooler of JJ's magic. ;D It was in the back livewell. My boat's all wax up again and it's not coming back out until the Road Trip.
Anybody know where I can get good deals on new or used rods and reels? ;D
I'll start looking on the flea market.
Joe, what kinds of rods do you fish with?
I can try and help you out with some stuff.
I just keep saying to myself " it's all my fault I should have known better to leave all my stuff in it."
I was down in the boat again late last night because I couldn't sleep and I was sitting there thinking to myself "What rods and reels are missing" For the life of me I couldn't figure it out. The 3 reels that I have here are my Quantum Accurist and my 2 Shimano Citica's. There all on Shimano rods. What's the rest, I've beating myself up trying to figure it all out.
My advice to you guys is write down all your rods and reels, You never know what's going to happen.
QuoteJoe, what kinds of rods do you fish with?I can try and help you out with some stuff.
Wayne, I mostly fish with MH baitcasters rods.
Although, At this point Wayne anything cheap. ;D
Joe PM me your address.
Man, I'm sorry about that. My stuff is the cheaper stuff that you probably wouldn't want but it gets me by. But, I would be glad to send a donation if that helps. PM me with your address, I'd be glad to help out in any way I can.
Thanks Alan. Pm sent.
It sucks to have someone steal your hard earned money. They will get what they deserve soon enough. I would start checking your local craigslist for scumbags trying to sell it.
Keep your head up high man, tackle can be replaced time and again. Be thankful you do NOT have to stoop to their level to live. If they are that petty than you should feel sorry for them.
joe pm me your address. I have a quantum aviso reel, its brand new in the box.7.1 gear. I dont use it, so its ok
Well I'm waiting to hear the final verdict tomorrow. I talked to my agent today and he said my boat insurance doesn't cover any contents inside the boat. >
But luckily somehow my homeowners might. To me this is the part that doesn't make any sense at all. How can my homeowners cover it but not my boat insurance? ;D
So tomorrow I'm go to down to his office tomorrow and changing my policy.
I'll keep you guys updated.
Dang man, sorry to hear that. I once had 5 rods and reels stolen...one of them being a NEW CALIAS...I understand the feeling.
Hopefully them thieves get CAUGHT!!!
That sucks man! Whenever I take my boat to the mechanic everything comes out before hand!
That sucks big time! >
QuoteThat sucks man! Whenever I take my boat to the mechanic everything comes out before hand!
I always do, but this time I was in a hurry to beat the snowstorm about come in.
bad new man.... atleast you get to spend a day or two with your best friend the bait monkey though!!!
Sorry to hear about the theft! Thiefs drive me crazy! Make sure you speak to your boat insurance company and have them add some protection for tackle. I have $5000 of coverage for tackle on my policy from Progressive, it would not be enough to replace all the gear if my boat sank with all of it on board, but it would be enough to get me back fishing quickly.
I had my insurance set up before where everything was covered ( For Tournaments). I have my Camp, Boat and Quad all on the same policy. When I bought my new quad I took the old one off the policy and added the new one. The policy was more expensive so I changed some things around to get it cheaper. I didn't know she messed with my boat package I thought she messed around with just the quad package.
That sucks. Sorry to hear about that.
d**n, that sucks bro... hope your gear is still there. Luckily we're in a hobby where the vast majority of thieves are not going to take your fishing gear. Hopefully they just grabbed the electronics. (still sucks) But I don't think most thieves would get excited by crankbaits and soft plastics, ya know? Let's hope for the best.
nevermind, just read your post... sorry to hear man.
I just got off the phone with insurance company. They didn't even lube me up before they screwed me. They only gave me $1000 bucks for 11 rods and reels and a Life vest. Bad part is I have a $500 deductable, so that leaves me $500 to get all new stuff. I know I had way more than a thousand dollars in rods and stuff but that's all they will give. >
Here's my rant- I pay all of this insurance for the past 5 years and for what? They just take your money and run anyway. They don't want to help you at all, they just want to collect your money and say sorry for your luck better luck next time.
I'm ticked off now.

That's tough but that's the world of insurance.
Don't know the fine print on your policy but policies differ. Some are replacement value ( proof of receipt required) and others are compensation for used equipment, at least that is the way it works for HO policies. The less cost of the plan the more the deductible.
Insurance...an un-nessecary evil!!
You only find out how much "they" suck until you need them. My advice.....hit the Flea Market here with the money they gave you and have at it!!!!!
I am Alan, I also got Speedbead and dick helping me out.
I also wanted to say thanks here on the board to:
Bassnajr- Alan, thank you so much for the Life vest. I will wear it.
Firefightin15- Brian, thanks so much for the reel. I get to see you in a few months so we can do some fishing together. ;D
Volfan60- Thanks so much for the reel also. I'm still going to try and get you to go to Pickwick this year.
You guys the way I see it, I'm in debt to you so if there's anything you guys EVER need let me know.
Wow, I am absolutely thrilled to see how people on this site truly care about the other members. I just make me feel really good seeing friends helping each other out when they need it the most. I'm proud to be apart of this great, well, "family?"
Simplejoe like everybody else I'm sorry to hear your having to go threw this. As a kid growing up we had two house fires where I lost just about everything. I'm still not over loosing my Upper Deck King Griffy Jr rookie card. I hope in some small way the generosity on this board helps renew your belief in humanity, because I'm sure you feel violated at the moment. Try not to let it get you down and start planning your purchases out. Remember there are a ton of great deals on the flea market!
Simp, Thanks for the support bro. I'm trying to spend this $500 carefully and not dig into the Roadtrip money too much. I start back on tounaments in May so I need to start getting rods. I've been in the flea market lurking around to see what I can find and there some rods in there I wanna buy, just waiting for the check to come.
it takes all kinds even idiots to make the world turn, sorry to hear, is your insurance going to come throw for you Opps missed were you said how much your getting, are they sending some lubricate with your check, cause that isn't right
Sbking
sorry for your loss man. i cant even imagine it.
not to make light of the situation... but its seems to me the real theives here are the insurance companies. you were alot more hurt by THEIR greed than those of the crackheads that stole your gear.
its a d**n shame.
Sorry for your lose. This just happend to a guy in my club. He was actually storing it inside some kind of shrink wrap tent in a storage facility. He would check on the boat 3x a week. One day he went to do his check, someone slit the side of the tent and cleaned him totally out. I think he is working with his ins co on replacements.
I usually take everything out winter anyway to clean it, go though it all and straighten it all up, then put it all on shelves. This year I swept out the boat, looked at the tackle to get a count for what I needed and put it all back, figured I had all winter to do it. I did clean most of my reels, so whoever has them they're all greased up and ready. >
