First Gopro Video 2024

fishing user avatar00 mod reply :

Went to Pickwick on Sunday and filmed my trip for the first time using my GoPro.  First ever attempt at making a video as well.  Check it out!

Jeff

fishing user avatarShane J reply :

Cool, man! Glad you got it figured out. Gonna be a lot of fun filming this year. Can't wait to see more! I love this stuff! Nice job.

fishing user avatarHanover_Yakker reply :

Nice job - I'll give you a GoPro setting that may help you remove some of the frame jump/jitters and that is change your video mode to 720p/30fps which I believe is r4 on the display. It does two things - allows you to have a smoother transition during your video captures, and it increases the amount of recording time you have to 2.5 hours. Other than that man it was a good first video. Now you're "hooked"!

Oh yeah, almost forgot. If you can, burn the finished product to a RW/DVD or at least to an external HD. The videos take up massive amounts of space if you store them on the internal HD of your computer.

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

Nice Jeff!

By the way, what GoPro did you get?

fishing user avatar00 mod reply :

Thanks guys.  This is still a huge learning process for me.  I got the Hero2 on clearance for $199.  I will head the advice of everyone, and continue to tinker with it.  Need to get some music on my computer so I don;t have to use one of the 3 stock songs.  LOL.  I jumped in head first.  I have 2 32gb cards and 3 batteries so I can film a lot when on the water.  Slow day that day, with only 2 fish, but if I were on em, it would have run dead the first day.  Only had 1 battery for first trip!

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

Very Cool Jeff ~

There's no stopping you now . . . .

fishing user avatarjhoffman reply :

I know this isnt a go pro. I want to show you guys who might be thinking go pro what the kodak playsport does. Video done in 720p, 60fps... pics are from trail cameras. Planning on doing my entire fishing season this year with this cam. I have so much hunting video on it right now that I need to pull down, I just dont have the time.

I bought this camera refurbished from kodak for $59, its the zx3 version which is said to be slightly better but is getting hard to find.

Wow 00 !!!

Very nice job indeed !!!

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

Sweet! I especially like the late '70's porn groove! Seriously, I need to get one of those, looks like a lot of fun to make your own vids like that!

fishing user avatarsbfishySC reply :

Very cool! Glad you got it working.

fishing user avatar00 mod reply :

I am looking for constructive criticism here.  I understand it is a learning curve, and I like my video, but in no way am I completely satisfied.  I have a long way to go, before a I get to the level I want to be.

So far here is what I have gotten:

-  Too much bs, not enough fishing ( it was a slow day, only 2 bass were landed, so hopefully the next videos will have more catches)

-  Too choppy between frames.

-  Get better music. LOL

-  Get videos onto external storage, so it doesn't slow down my computer

-  Have arrows pointing to the things I am talking about ( dock walk)-- I don't know how to do this yet, but will learn

-  Get closer to the subject, so it doesn't look so far away, and maybe underwater will work. (Pickwick is normally a lot clearer, so that should help with next video)

-  Use the skeleton case when not shooting underwater, so we can talk and be heard, not just have music

Looks good Jeff. I'm glad to see your are gaining experience for when a really big bite comes along. :laugh5:

fishing user avatarRangerphil reply :

Nice job would love to start filming some myself!

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

I think you're on the right track -

Other than technical advice - you should make them the way you like to see them.

I'll tell you that in many circumstances, I think  No Music is OK.

Some of the silly things we say or the strange noises we make are too classic to miss.

All that helps capture the actual Raw feeling of the moment.

How did you know my plans?

Jeff

fishing user avatarNitrofreak reply :

Don't worry so much about everything !!!

All of this stuff will come in due time, your first video was pretty good I really must say !!

When you pick you music, pick something that goes with the theme, like the Roadtrip in Alabama video and the one from Texas, not that there was anything wrong with the music you had chosen, you stated you were just limited to your choices.

It would have been nice to have a little commontary in there instead of titles.

I look forward to seeing more of what you can do in the very near future...I think we may have woken a sleeping giant lol !!!

As said before, congrats and have fun with it, your doing great 00 !!

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Too cool!

I think you did a great job, just need a few more fish.

Maybe this summer when it warms up a little we can invite Kate Upton to ride along.

I think that would improve the video quite a lot.

A little blue birdie told me, a jay. I'll bet there will be some monster greenies before we get any big  brownies.

fishing user avatarHanover_Yakker reply :

One last note on GoPros and sound recordings, the mic is very sensitive. That being the case, the waterproof housing actually mutes the mic and makes your commentary muffled. The non-waterproof housing cures part of that but then you are exposing your GP to the elements like rain or other water damage from fish, co-anglers, etc. and you are more succeptable to increased ambient noises you cannot control like wind, things in the boat banging or anglers shuffling about. You'll notice that none of my videos have any ambient noise or commentary, simply because ambient noises are everywhere for me when I fish out of a kayak. Not to mention that the GP is literally only inches from the water, so even the slightest wave chop or movement is amplified.

Keep playing around with it, and it will improve each time. If you watch the first of my videos from early in 2012 to the last one I did back in early December - the difference in quality and production is leaps and bounds ahead. Keep at it!!!

fishing user avatar00 mod reply :

So what is the secret? I have both waterproof housing/ and skeleton backdoor, as well as skeleton housing. How do I eliminate the ambiant/ other noises I dont want?

I dont know how Kent missed it either???

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

Jeff, if you plan to do above water plus underwater catch n release shots, you'll need to keep the full water proof housing on. If you plan to just shoot videos with commentary then use the waterproof housing with the skeleton door. They also have "The Frame" which houses your GoPro completely unprotected but allowing best sound capture. I would only recommend that if you're doing instructional videos similar to what Gene does. Even at that, the waterproof housing + skeleton door will work.

Another tip....if you do a lot of underwater shooting or dipping of the camera. Put rainx on your housing lens. It'll bead off nicely and you don't got to worry about water interfering with your above water shots.

fishing user avatarDoubled Over reply :

Not sure if this was already mentioned or if you already knew this, but there is a program that GoPro made called "GoPro CineForm Studio". You can find it on GoPro's website for download, and it is also completely free. In this program you can put effects on your video, adjust the frame rate, put your video in very nice slow motion, etc. I played around with it a bit and it got the slow motion playing smooth as butter. It is a pretty simple program to use but there is a tutorial on it as well. Just a little tip in case anyone is interested.

By the way, nice video!

fishing user avatarjhoffman reply :

If you want to do above and below with one cam this is where the kodak shines as its waterproof out of the box, no need for a case. HOWEVER, dont take it below 10ft.

If that go pro is truely waterproof in its case at any depth I would be taking it and attaching it to a rope or 80lb braid. Drop it down in some of my fishing holes and see exactly what it looks like down there.

fishing user avatarBrian Needham reply :

I love watching fishing videos!.......especially of pickwick, since there are so few out there.

very nice jeff

fishing user avatarBroke bass fisherman reply :

You could always add commentary in post. The make a wide array of USB microphones (ranging from inexpensive to unobtainable) that just plug into your computer allowing you to record your commentary and then lay it in once you edit down your video.

fishing user avatarClackerBuzz reply :

awesome first vid Jeff!  just sub'd and looking forward to seeing lots more of ur adventures.

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

Looks pretty good to me. My first gopro video was when I strapped it to my 2 year old and set him loose at the playground. Made you seasick watching it but it was a pretty cool perspective to say the least.

fishing user avatarBig-O reply :

Good stuff is all that I can say... Oh and when you learn all about it, I'll need you to show me how to use mine, I've had it for 2 years and it's still in the BOX ;)

Invite me down and I will show you what I know now. And then every year I can give you a "refresher" on what I have learned since then!!!!

Jeff

fishing user avatarShane J reply :

Big O, I'm bringing mine down, so lets get yours all charged up, too, and we'll have a couple different angles to record and play around with. Just make sure you get the biggest SD card available!

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

Buy a few batteries too. One doesn't last a day on the water.especially for the amount of mules you guys catch.

fishing user avatarShane J reply :

Good advice. I still need to get me another one. I will in the next week or two.

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

And make sure it is a class 10 card too

fishing user avatarShane J reply :

Exactly, Flyfisher. About how many hours will one of those cards hold? Somebody here suggested filming in 720 30fps, so assuming that's what I'm using, can I just let that sucker go for 10 hours?

I have a 32G and i think i can get around 4 hours give or take on mine.  One suggestion i would make is to start and stop the camera periodically.  Otherwise you will be wathcing a whole lot of blank footage to get to the good stuff.  I usually turn mine on and off between areas that i am working so as i am going through the videos it will be easier to determine when i caught some fish.

I am still figuring out all the nuances of using one but it has been fun so far.

Here is my first fishing attempt where i actually had some action....

fishing user avatar00 mod reply :

Good video flyfisher, but try and get a mount for your yak or something.  The head mount was too "blair witchy" for me!  4 casts in a row is ridiculous!  Nice catching!
