Wisconsin Froggin' And Punchin' & More 2024

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

Spent Friday through Monday up at my summer home with the family. Got out to fish just about everyday with decent success. Weather was in the upper 70's clouds and sunshine for the most part. Had a few storms trickle in on and off Friday/Saturday.  Water temps were uppers 70's and broke into low 80's on Sunday with a lot of sunshine.  I had a lot of blow ups at the good hours for topwater, and I spent the rest of my time punching weed mats with my new Siebert Outdoors tungsten punch skirts. I will write a review in the tackle section of that after this post.  Overall I had a great time with a lot of blow ups on the frog. I think every bass that hit my frog I caught, but I missed a dozen pike or so. They just can't seem to inhale them the same way a bass can. Lost a really nice pike at the boat.  Here are some pictures from the GoPro of a few catches.

Big bass of the weekend. 21" and 4lb 11oz.  Just goes to show you the length and weight difference of the northern bass vs a southern bass. This guy was fun to catch and fought like a beast in the thickest, nastiest slop. You can see how much lily pad and weed growth I have to work with. I love it.

Big pike of the weekend. Just around the 30" mark. Nice fish that smashed my LiveTarget frog.

A few more pictures of other fish.

I have some video footage that I'll try to put together showing some of the catches.

Awesome great shots, love how dark the bass are.

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

Thanks. Dark backs and yellow bellies. The bottom of the lake is pretty much muck and silt through the entire lake and it gets very warm. I've seen water temps in the 90's in the dog days of summer. Almost all the bass in there are colored like that. I actually like when bass have a nice white belly, I think they look prettier. But, I'm not going to get picky on colors when I'm catching them. ;-)

I have not seen many Florida strains of bass in person but they are similar in color, I know this ins't the FL strain but I see similarities..  I always liked the way they look(Dark/yellowish), around here the bass have allot more silver, although its easy to see when they swipe at a bait lol..

In all honesty Dwight....I felt like it was too. I have a Rapala 50lb Digital scale.  I did a test at home with a gallon of water which is supposed to be 8.35lbs. My scale weight had it around 8.5-8.6lbs.  So it's not far off but this fish just felt heavy to me. Plus at 21" you would think it'd bee in the upper 5's to 6. Either way it was a nice healthy bass. It didn't have a thick belly, pretty slender.

Lol I thought the same looks to be in the 5# range, but I would take that fish all day long and on a frog man I need to go fishing..

yes sir those are some dandy's!!...i use the rapala 50# one also and have tested it out on a variety of things and its pretty accurate & consistent, i've been happy with it...some largies just don't weigh up as big as they should, they should always be a pound or 2 heavier :eyebrows:   then i've been surprised the other way were its a smaller fish and it weighs up alot heavier then i would of ever guessed...

x2 about fish weight. You can tell when you see the different fish from different regions say FL and NY

Here is the video I put together. It's a little lengthy and could use some severe editing but my laptop is ancient and it was frustrating enough to put this together.

I have an old Dell from when vista just hit the market. Back then it was lightning fast, today its a joke. Had I taken more time I could have made this a bit better and fixed some errors. I'm going to be getting a new pc for work soon so I'm going big to get a nice editing pc.

I agree having videos is a lot of fun. I like to see the strikes and hooksets. But windows movie maker and Cineform aint going to cut it. I need more power!

Regarding YouTube, I thought you could loop yhe music tracks but couldn't figure it out. Ill look into that more.

Frog if we're ever in the same neck of the woods a slop fest froggin adventure will be a must.

Thanks for watching everyone. Its only the beginning.

The fish was 21" but long and slender. I was surprised at the weight. Thought it was over 5 easy but hey it was a great fight and a beautiful fish. I'll take it any day.

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

So I hit up my lake this past weekend with awful results.  It was by far the biggest let down for a weekend get away of fishing in quite some time for me.  The lake was down about 8-10 inches and the water temp was about 8 degree difference from the last time I was there.  Weed growth and pads were still looking PRIME for swamp donkey catching. I threw the kitchen sink at the fish in the lake with nothing to show for.  I only managed a single bass at around 15 inches and a few short pike.  Nothing at all produced well for me.

The few fish I did nab were from two lures. I threw a Yo-Zuri Sashimi Popper that I got in a MTB last month and a 3/8 oz Siebert Outdoors swim jig in blue gill color. The popper was entertaining because it was like Air Jaws on shark week, with the pike breaching out for it.  One of them got about a good 2-3 feet out of the water. But, they couldn't seem to get a grip on the lure and I missed a lot of them.  The fact that I didn't lose the lure was amazing from how many blow up's I had. And for my luck, my GoPro died as that action started so I didn't even get to humor my self watching the fish explode.  A few more batteries are in order for my b-day this month I think.

The bass I nabbed was on that same popper and it sounded like a paddle smashing the water when it hit. Scared me because I was in such a daze from lack of "action" all weekend.  The few pike I landed where caught on a Siebert Outdoors 3/8 oz swim jig paired with a baby rage craw.  This swim jig goes through milfoil amazingly well. Better than the flip n swim jigs I have from Northstar, which I also like a lot.  Both are great products. Once again, Mike from Siebert gets a 5 star mark from me!

So in short, no videos to post or pictures to share. I might have 1 of that bass I got but I haven't even taken the time to review whats on the camera yet.  When I do i'll post it if its worth while.  I'll chalk this one up as my 1 bad outing for the year. Still beats being at the desk all day....

It was a rough weekend in Wisconsin.  Spent about 5 hours on the water Sunday battling the jet ski's and pontoons.  Managed 2 bass with the largest being 18".  The girlfriend caught a crappie and a gnarly 30"+ 6.25lb bowfin.  That was our excitement for the day.  Hopefully next time your up the weather behaves.

I'll see if I can get a pic up after work.  It almost took my jaw-grips when it did the crocodile deathroll coming out of the net.  I need a gopro like you guys to get vids of this stuff.Image2.gif

To be honest the weather was great despite a small cold front that was passing through. But it wasn't even much of a front, temps where high 70's still. It was just an "off" weekend.  Usually I can manage a limit or so but this was brutal.  Well, better luck to you and me both next time! That bowfin sounded like a nice surprise. I have never caught one before.

fishing user avatar5dollarsplash reply :

We were on a new lake, so there was the learning curve too.  Usually we can both limit, but a bowfin like that is as big as 3 17" bass up here lol.  Pound's divided by fish = alright day.

Not on Green but not very far. I haven't got over to green lake this year. I'll try for smallies in the fall there I think. I went to puckaway 3 weeks ago. Caught fish there but nothing to brag on.

I apparently do not.....the boat has only seen 2 fish caught all season on it, and one was by a 5 yr old that wasn't really paying attention.  The other was a very tiny perch by me....and the t-rig I had out for 4 hrs from shore today in 3 different spots produced bites but no hooksets.

Ah, that's what I remember reading.  Haven't been to either myself, my Dad's PB for smallies was on Little Green Lake, somewhere over 4 lb.  He had it stuffed.

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

Got out to a local lake today for about 2 hours to try out some swimbaits I've been gathering. Lake was super pressured with a lot of bucket fisherman. I started with a Got Em Coach gill in red ear. Had a follow on that pretty early but no takers. After about 30 min I switched to a Bettencourt dying gill (thanks to speedbead). I love the action of this bait and it will be killer up north. Did not convince any IL bass today though. I was fishing boulder areas with scattered weeds.I had to take a 15 min timeout for mother nature to drain her blatter.

From there I switched to a 4.5" hudd weedles shad. I found some thicker weed mats to toss into. I saw a pike or a ski roll on it but no commitment. It was probably upper 20's. Nothing huge.

Right before I was going to leave I stopped at a really matted area and hooked up finally. 15" bass but it was great to finally get out and wet a line. Headed up north in a couple weeks. Hope to have a better report then.

Looks like i'm not heading up until the last weekend of September. There is always something going on with the families, hard to make time for just me.  I will do my best to land some slobs and have a video worthy of posting. Until then, your youtube and BR reports will haunt me....

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

Finally got around to slicing up what video I had of last weekend even worthy of posting.  The air temp was 65-75 all weekend, with water temps in the mid 60's.  The weeds in my lake had recessed dramatically since I was up last.  Water was gin clear so conditions were really tough.  I tried everything and only managed a few fish most of which were dinks. I got to try out the Spittin Wa frog which I commented on a thread in the tackle forum.  It's a nice frog and great in the open water or sparse vegetation. I don't like it in thick veg as it flipped too much or got hung up under pads, it's not nearly as good as a Koppers or alike.  The pike in the low res clip came off the Spittin Wa.  The bass came off the Koppers.  The last smaller pike I got was on a Siebert Outdoors swimjig in bluegill color with a hard candy Rage Craw trailer. The rest of the dinks I caught on the weekend were on various other lures.

Saturday morning last weekend was opening season for duck hunting   :mad5: .  There were 3 sets of hunters out on the portion of the lake I fish more than 75% of the time so I didn't get to hit those areas really hard.  I probably would have had more fish had I been able to fish there.  There were quite a bit of shots being fired mostly in the morning.  Weather was really windy for the most part and a storm rolled in Saturday from 4pm to the early morning.  Sundays conditions were calm bright bluebird skies.  Every where on the lake I could see pretty much straight to the bottom.  It was very tough overall but still better than a day in the office.  Normally wouldn't bother posting results like this but I wanted to try out the new GoPro software.  Here's a clip and a few pics.  ***I accidentally dumped the high res file on the bigger pike shown. I'm an idiot. ***

Thanks Griz. Haven't quite gotten out as much as I intended to this year. Had a couple horrible outings too.  Hard water is approaching fast for us northerners so i'll probably only be out 1 or 2 more times before I have to winterize the boat and hang it up for the season.

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

Small report from mid October.  Not much to report as it seems the bass up and left to go to Florida for the winter?  :Idontknow:   I threw the kitchen sink at them and the only thing getting any attention was a Manns Minus -1 crank worked over the top of weeds and a Hudd Grass Minnow which was claimed by the pike gods. You'll see that bit in the last 5 seconds of the video.  Had a few follows on the Manns from bass but nothing of great size.  I probably wouldn't have even bothered with this video but I was bored so I did it anyway.

I had a few other dinks in the mix.  Overall a really tough weekend and not a good fall bite I was hoping for.  Oh well, that's fishing.

Conditions: Winds from the Northwest 10-20mph through the weekend. Rain drizzle on and off. Air temps low 50's in day, upper 30's at night producing frost.  Water temp was around 52 consistently.
