My friend did last year. Stepped on treble hook. Went in his heel. Urgent care. Numbed it. Threaded it through. The usual.
Had my first last week. Side of my finger. Had a big crappie. Took the hook out. It flipped around. Pole fell in my kayak and I grabbed the pole but the hook was right there. I just threaded it through until the barb was showing. Clipped. Pulled it out. Little blood. No biggie. Was cold that day so that helped. Cleaned it good with my first aid kit on board. Fished and few more hours. Anyone else have a bad hook experience?
Joe
I never have but I saw a picture of a guy who had a treble hook IN HIS EYE! I could not imagine how I would react the b***h would come oozing out of me real quick lmao
In his eye ball!?!?!?!?
What?????!!!!
Man I would say knock me out and wake me when it's over. Lol
Yea it was in his eye ball saw another guy that had one hooked in his eye lid, imagine if they were on the same boat fishing together lol talk about bad luck
Oh, about 15 years ago, when I was just getting into fishing in high school, I hooked my ear on the cast with a floating Rapala. I was trying to cast it as far as I could, and was loose on my cast. It felt like someone hit me with an oar in the back of my head. Blood running down my head, treble stuck in my upper ear.
Urgent care, docs and nurses fascinated.....quite embarrassing.
I was in my boat and fishing while waiting for a friend to show up. I had a Heddon Torpedo on a rod hooked to one of the guides. The rod was bowed some and I went to take it off and it slipped and the rod straightened suddenly driving the hook into my hand. I tried to push it through but due to the angle I couldn't. Friend showed up and asked me how I was doing. I showed him my predicament. He offered to take me to the hospital, but I said heck no, I'm fishing and proceeded to fish with the lure hanging off my hand.
I got home around midnight and my wife woke up and greeted me. I hid my hand behind my back, then went into the bathroom to see if I could cut it out or what. Nothing doing. So I taped the lure to my hand so it didn't flop around while I slept. Next morning I went to the ER and the doc had it out in a few minutes. He told me I was stupid for waiting so long. He was probably right. He asked me if I wanted the lure back. Heck yeah, at $6 each darn right I wanted it back.
Many years ago prefishing for a Federation tournament on Lake George. 30 miles from the launch. Landed a small 13" whipper snapper smallie on a Rattlin' Rogue. While unhooking it slipped out of my hand and trebles landed in my inner thigh. Luckily the fish came off just as the hook lodged in my leg. Hook was straight in and up to the bend. Had to grab it with needlenose and turn it back outwards and poke it back through the skin. That was no where near the easy task I thought it was going to be. Skin is VERY tough. Realizing how far I was from the launch I knew I had to pop out out no matter what. Finally did, clipped the barb and it came right out.
When i was a kid my dad and i were out fishing and he was trying to be funny and he cast out towards some ducks. Well his casting was a little more accurate than he thought and he hooked on. The duck felt it and started flying away and as you know, there was not braid back then, so the mono was streeeeeeetching and boing, flew right back and caught him right above his eye. I'll never forget looking up and seeing the classic gold with black back rapala floating minnow hanging from his face. I wasn't that old so i wasn't able to help to much but we ended up getting it out and fished the rest of the day.
Never past the barb anyway. Almost went past the barb in my hand tonight while I was changing trailer hooks on one of my buzzbaits.
Many years ago I got a treble in my hand. Tried working it backward, and pushing it through, but it wouldn't budge. I decided to get down to the ER before I really messed something up. They numbed me, and pulled the hook out the way it went in. They had to trim a little flesh around the barb, but it came right out.
Yeah I've been stuck more than once, here is a pic of the last time. 3/4 ounce jig, hook went toward thumb and lodged against the bone, had to come out the way it went in.
not me but my brother when he was 17.. crankbait to the chin lol,,, had to drive himself to the ER cuz my pops refused to take him lol. 4inch crankbait hanggin from the chin, we still kid him on that one.
retiredbosn that is a crazy pic!!! ;-)
Rich, I bet you guys still do give him a hard time. Lol
I have been hooked twice pretty good. Once I got both my thumb and index of the same hand hooked with the same treble hook, on a F7 Rapala. My buddy yanked them out, and it hurt pretty good. Last year, I got hooked pretty good on my thumb, same type of rapala too. That one, required an urgent care visit. Needless to say, I leaving those Rapala's alone for a long while. LOL.
I got hooked once in the back of my calf on a floating Rapala when the rod fell off the spot it was leaning at and the bait caught me on the way down. Pushed it through and clipped the barb.
My dad drug a deep diving crank across the top of my head on the backcast. I had 3 bloody, torn up streaks all the way from the front of my hairline to the top of my head but thankfully the force of his cast ripped it all the way out. That one stung like crazy.
Worse one was in the side of my left index finger. My buddy was fishing with an original Rapala (seems like they hook a lot of people?) when my half grown mutt decided he wanted to try to bite it. Well he caught it out of the air and got the hook in his top lip. I jumped on him because he was pawing at the bait and I didn't want him to get the bait deeper. I got him between my legs and tried to grab his collar but he threw it reverse on me and buried the front hook in the side of my finger. So not only did I have a hook in my finger but it was attached to 50 pounds of panicked dog. He got a couple real solid pulls on it before I tackled him and just laid on top of him. The hook on him was through his top lip so my buddy just clipped it off with the pliers real fast and his ordeal was done. I ended up at the hospital and after a considerable amount of yanking the doctor was able to rip the hook out.
Last year I got a chatterbait in my face just to the side of my mouth. Partner had a bite but missed it and the bait came flying at me. I never knew it was coming. After an ER visit and 6 stitches later I have a scar to remember that day.

Ouch!!!
I had a customer hook me so bad that it took an hour with a fillet knife to bore a hole in my finger to get to the point. It would have been an easy removal had I not had 4x hooks. I had nothing in the boat strong enough to cut the hook.

Captain Shane get a pair of knipex bolt cutters.

I was throwing a jerkbait, hook a 3lbs largemouth... Sit down in my canoe, fish slips out of my hands and the jerkbait goes straight into my leg with the fish flopping around like crazy!!!
That ended my fishing day, I was more disappointed about that than my leg...
Thanks for the tip Dwight. I just ordered the cutters.
Only by A-Jay.
I ordered those cutters per Dwight's suggestion and they are "the ticket"!

When I was younger, a Hula Popper in the inside of my wrist. I was trying to be cute and flip it up over the moss along the bank. Grandpa drove it through with needle nose pliers and cut the barb off. Bactine and a band aid. We carry heavy cutters in the boat for this purpose. Almost got it this year when a crankbait fish decided he needed to flop when I went to lip him and get him out of the net. Two of the hooks went as far as you can go without going past the barb. Too close.
I went to Tx in May to visit a friend. I hit him in the back of the head with a 2.5 on a fully loaded cast. Buried 2/3 trebles in his head through his buff. 1 went through past the barb and the other I had to pop through. Ruined 2 pairs of pliers trying to cut them. Finally the 3rd pair from the tool kit worked. It hit so hard it broke the bill in 1/2 and cut his head a bit.
I got hooked behind the ear on that hard patch of skull. Luckily it wasn't in too deep.
Man! Some crazy stories here. Glad we can all relate in some fashion. Funny how some people posted they still fished until the day was done,,,,,, then went to the ER. ;-)

Been fishing bout 48 years and got myself this past April for the first time.
A Lucky Craft Pointer with brand spanking new Owner ST- 36 size 4 trebs got me in the index finger. It was near dark and freezing cold when I lipped a bass and he did a double pump slam into my finger. The problem was, my fingers were numb from the cold so when I realized he got me it was already past the barb.
Drove 10 miles to an Urgent care. They had one of those fancy bolt/wire cutters they were trying to use. The Dr. was a young 30 something women and she had a heck of a time cutting off that Owner treble.
Now I know why I've always been a big Owner Hook guy! No one's going to tell me they've straightened out an ST36 treble, that's for sure.
My 3 year old son decided to drop his Spiderman kiddie pole while I was tying on a hook for him... Ouch right in the side of my finger. The good thing was it was only a small #6 hook.
Personally, I haven't been hooked anytime note worthy enough to make a story out of it. BUT, I was present for 2 pretty good "hookings."
First, in highschool, a bunch of us were at a graduation party at a large pond. I was fishing and started to draw a small crowd when I caught a fish. Some one else brought a rod out and started casting and the crowd kept getting bigger out on this small dock. Fortunately, it wasn't me that didn't think it was necessary to pay attention to who was around while casting and accidentally hooked one of our friends in the back of the head with a treble hook. I think his mom wound up taking him to the ER to get it taken out.
Second, my brother is almost strictly a fly-fisherman. One year in the Sierra's we dropped him and his float tube off at a lake while we went hiking. When we came back he was already out of the water with a fuzzy black thing hangin off the side of his neck. Apparently, on his back cast he misjudged where his fly was heading and stuck himself. Thankfully those hooks are tiny so it didn't go past the skin, but it did make it tough to push the hook through and cut the barb off.
Ouch! I have been lucky thus far but I'm sure my time is coming. Of my "almost", all have involved those dumb little dinks which are too small for you to get a good hold of (from the mouth, anyway), and they invariably shake like crazy).
I've hooked myself one time and it was back when I was 16 years old. I went to a local river to do some salmon fishing during their fall migration. I was throwing a Canadian Wiggler plug into the deeper pools and I managed to hook a fish on my first cast. I didnt have a net with me and I beached the fish on the bank, maybe a 12 pounder. When I went to grab the hook (no pliers), the fish thrashed and put the hook right into my palm and continued to thrash. Eventually the hook ripped free and it was messy. Being 16, I patched it up and kept fishing haha. I still have a 2.5 inch long scar on my palm from that day. Sometimes I feel like I should have left and got stitches, sometimes though, I enjoy the battle wounds.
If you fish long enough, and often enough it is going to happen. I have done it several times and almost always with treble hooks. Usually a lure gets hung up and I try to rip it out. It flies back at me and imbeds somewhere in my body right to the bend in the hook. I have worn a deep diving crankbait and a #9 rapala stick bait to the emergency room one month apart. I tried the sting a pull method and had no luck. If you fish a lot it is going to happen.
one time fishing with a friend he snagged a plastic bag on the bottom of the lake with a square bill. After pulling for a while it finally came out and when it did it flew right into my leg and the back treble buried all the way in. had to go to the doctors and get it numbed and it eventually came out the way it went in. kept the bait and fished with it the next weekend.
