I am bored, and sick of waiting for ice to melt so I can get on the water. Any of you NYer's want to have a friendly bragging rights lunker contest for the 2013 season? Similar to what J.Francho's buddy Burnie ran last year on NYBass? John knows what I am talking about.
How does it work?
I'm in how's it work
Im in!
All right we got some interest. This is how it goes. Post your biggest bass caught in NY this season, one category for Largemouth, one for smallmouth. Post a picture of you, with the fish on the body of water in NY you caught it in. Give an accurate weight....that means a weight from a decent scale, no guessing "hey this looks like it's about 6bs" LOL. Don't need to go into deep details, just in case you have a secret bait, or sweet spot you want to protect, but the name of the lake will be mandatory as well as a brief report on the days fishing. This will be on the honor system. Enter as many fish as you like, so you can one up another guy, or yourself. But please post it within a day or two of catching it, so at the end there is not a rush of big fish reported at the end of the month/year. We'll start April 1st, end it November 30th. You can jump in and play anytime, or chose not to take part in it if you have not caught a good one that month. At the end of each month, a monthly winner in each category will be declared, we will draw the name of a random participant from each category who is not the winner of that month (but who did enter a fish that month), and that person will send a small prize of his choice (the guy who was drawn's choice, not the winner) valued at about $5..........IE a pack of hooks, or plastics, a crankbait, or any thing bass fishing related, etc..... Once you have been drawn to send a prize, your off the hook for having to send a prize the rest of the year (providing we have enough participants). You can win as many times as you can. At the end of the year, the biggest bass of the year, (one in the sm, one in the lm category) will win a "grand prize" of bass fishing related tackle valued at about $10 each....I will be donating the grand prizes........since this is my idea.LOL The only hard and fast rules are, #1 the fish must be caught in a NY PUBLIC body of water, no hogs out of a private pond. #2 You must post the weight, taken on a scale, with a picture of you on the named NY body of water you caught it on. #3 You must be FROM NY..........sorry out of state visitors. SO that's that, get at and go catch a big one.
Ohh and since I am playing, I am also eligible to be in the drawings for sending the monthly prizes too...and here is how the drawing will work. Once the monthly winner is announced, I will pm all the "losers" and ask for a # between 1- and how ever many players we have enter fish that month, and just draw the numbers out of hat once every one responds with there chosen number.
Count me in. Sounds like fun!
Yup I'm in sounds fun. I'm gonna get my arse kicked if my fishing season goes like my hunting season did lol.
Count me in.
I'm in.

I'm in! sounds fun.
I just got a smallie 3lbs 3 ozs pics later I'm still on the water

Post them in this thread. Sounds like your going to be the early leader in the SM category. I was going to go to Conesus or Honeoye today, but the mega winds talked me out of it. Silver should be ice free by next weekend.
Yeah them winds are killing me I upgraded to a 3.6 smallmouth ill get pictures up tonight or tomorrow morning. I'm headed to a stone quarry now should get some LM.
My friend was also planning to get out on the water but stayed on shore because of the winds. We had gusts in the mid 40s.
Caught in Johnson's creek in Kuckville, NY on a white boohya spinner bait. 3lbs 6oz
April leader in the SM category: clayton86 3lbs 6oz.

I swear to god, that kid keeps texting me slobs while I'm working on my boat, I might do something drastic, lol.
Congrats Clayton - good to see you getting that kayak slimed up.
I love that kayak I might tak it out again tonight to the spot I got the trout and smallies yesterday
It's still going to be a week before I get out. I should have not started this till I was on the water. LMAO.
You shouldn't have let Clayton in. He has some good spots, that will only get better when gets in that kayak!
My good spots I constantly get asked " are there really fish in there?" One spot iv named wal Mary pond is a old quarry right infront of Walmart in Albion no one ever fishes it but its loaded with bass iv caught a few 5s and a bunch of 3 and 4s out of there. The other spot is behind the post office in lyndonville it's about 1' deep for 99% the water you see and all along the school. How ever there is a channel that is maybe 4' wide and 4' deep that snakes threw the big flat and leads you into the woods where it is 12' and loaded with brush and logs along the banks. I don't think iv ever pulled a dink out of that spot even the crappie are huge and iv caught bullhead on swimbaits back there and that spot is right in the center of town I see maybe 3 or 4 other people fish it occasionally.

Nope, I got out today. But I didn't bass fish. I went for crappie and bluegill. Good decision, they were biting.
A little birdy told me someone stuck a monster.....
Another "monster" as JF put it thanks for that kayak by the way lol.
4lbs 12oz on a spinner bait same spot as the first one right down to the same stump.
5-1 is the kayak's best smallie. 6-8 is it's best largie. Bar is set.
Challenge accepted only a few ozs off today ad would have beat it
Alright Clayton your still in the lead for April in the SM category, now with a 4-12.
Curious how does this work if I'm the only one to enter a fish?
On 4/12/2013 at 9:40 PM, clayton86 said:Curious how does this work if I'm the only one to enter a fish?
LOL I just thought of this today. You win the month, and no one else enters a fish in that category ...........then I guess you get a pat on the back, and bragging rights for the month. Actually I have to think about a way around this, we have a little while to go before your safe yet. Lot of April left, and a 4-12 is good, but.....you never know.
If that 4-12 holds for the month, I'll pitch in a sweet prize. It's the kind of guy I am. lol

There is a lot of April left I plan on getting a bigger one anyways got to break Johns 5-1 mark in the kayak. Tuesday most likely.
Ok, I'll take what's sure to be a short lived lead in the April LM category with a 4lb 7oz fish caught on a jerkbait on Honeoye lake 4-13-13. And let this be a free lesson on bottom of the barrel photo taking, but after losing 6 phones over the side in the last two years, and ruining two more from taking pictures in the rain, you'll have to cut me some slack with numb hands in freezing cold, wind driven rain, and semi-rough water. LOL
This will be the "official" leader board post for both category's.
April Smallmouth:
#1 Clayton86: 4lbs 12oz. 4-9-13
#2 Clayton86: 3lbs 6oz. 4-7-13

Nice fish WW2Farmer. I was on Honeoye yesterday, too, but only in my 'yak. PIcked up a few, but the biggest was only 1.5, so I didn't bother posting.

Thanks, believe it or not, that is my PB for Honeoye. I have 6+'s from both Conesus and Silver, but Honeoye has always been dink city for me.
Oh, I believe it. I doubt I've ever been over 3.5 there. But, it usually is good for a bunch, and I rarely get skunked there.
Well I was happy to not have disaster ensue, like the last two times I was there. Catching fish was a bonus. That lake owed me one after the before mentioned "disasters". One was in a season ending fall tournament where wnybassman and I brought a whopping 5 fish, 5.5 lb limit to the scales, and that wasn't even the disaster. Backing the trailer in to pull the boat out at the end of the day I cut it too close to the dock and dinged the fender on Noels trailer, could have been worse............could have been mine. LMAO. Then the next time, the first time the boat was to see water in the spring I dropped it in, and could barely get above idle speed. Talk about a long ride home. Turns out it was just a gummy carb. problem, the next day at home it fired up and ran like a champ after getting some fresh gas, and a dose of seafoam run through it.
I just heard from a birdie some one else stuck a pig also

Well in that case I'll take another temporary lead in the largemouth category, bumping my 4-7, with a 4-14. Caught 4-16-13, on Silver Lake on a crankbait.
Ya edged him out bout 2 ozs lol I got the pics earlier but he hasn't posted yet.
Dang it!!!!!!!
Oh well, here's the pics from today:
I didn't get the last pic of the craw in its mouth but I knew when I seen the jika rig earlier that a bama craw was on it
Wasn't really that big a fish, maybe 18-19". Fat, fat, fat, though.
On 4/17/2013 at 9:24 AM, J Francho said:Wasn't really that big a fish, maybe 18-19". Fat, fat, fat, though.
Or as I like to call them the WNY subspecies of LMB. I have caught 20" fish around here that weigh 6lbs. I think it's a trait of bluegill and craw eating fish that don't move more than a 100 yards all year, and when they do feed, they open there mouth and food swims in.
This is definitely a blue gill fed bass. That's all that's in this water, besides bass and crappie.
Release shot:
I'm gonna search for some green fish tomorrow if I can find some non muddy non flooded water.
Wow, some nice brown and green fish already guys, well done...seems I am late to the party.
Hoping to put one on the board this weekend. My county doesnt allow any bass fishing until the 3rd Sat of June, so I am making a trip to a remote Adirondack lake in a different county farther to the Southeast where its legal to C&R. Ice has been out for about a week and a half...water is gonna be real cold, but I am thinking tubes, baby rage craws, hard/soft jerkbaits, and dropshot to start... Supposed to be 80 up there on Friday, so I hope it warms the water some and gets the bass moving around. Would I be crazy to throw a spinnerbait this early?
QuoteWould I be crazy to throw a spinnerbait this early?
Nope. Or a chatterbait. A guy at the pond I was fishing was tossing both, and caught. Water temps couldn't have been more than high 40s.
All mine have came in a white booyah spinner with gold willow blades water temps were 41*
You told me they all came on pink senkos????
Haha well see tonight my "spot" is back to normal water flow a little stained but it's not the nesquick chocolate milk I was fishing in Monday.

This is exaclty what I wanted to hear, thanks guys. Will report back this weekend!
Well, I caught 2 smallies this afternoon, hooked and lost a 3rd before I paddled in to go to lunch. Water temps ~34 to 38 degrees. An old timer told me the ice has been out for about a week on this lake, and I came up here to do some trout fishing originally, but caught these guys instead. Both fish in textbook locations, staged far off gravel shoals/humps in ~20 FOW. Knowing the lake helped today.
Both fish taken with a dropshot. ~6" of space between hook and weight. #4 spinshot, 3/16 oz tungsten DS weight.
First fish on a 5" Bento Minnow in dace. Just a little guy...but he thumped it...then proceeded to give up pretty quickly.
2nd on a 4" Robo Worm Scuplin in ayu. ~17" or so? No scale, and not really a contender anyhow, just thought I'd share.
Good job. Nice smallies.
Hopefully I have a fish to add to the list by Saturday!
Definitely have confidence with a ChatterBait in 40 degree temp, I only seem to catch them when I'm ripping it fast with a slight pause; works for ponds at least.
Two 5lbers today to raise the bar, first was a 5-2, second was a 5-11. Both caught today, 4-28-13, on Silver Lake Times running out for april boys, and so far this is a two horse race. Clayton86 for SMB, and little old me for LMB.
The 5-2 just...............because. LOL
Good job! I'm probably done for a little bit I was chasing trout all weekend and going back to work full time I'm not gonna get out as much plus spring turkey
Nice fishy!
Nice fish. Sad to say that mine doesn't fit into any category, but I'm sure I had the biggest "catch" yesterday. Since I go around 210, I'm off the charts compared to all these "dinks" you guys are posting.
Hooked myself pulling a decent LM bass off on Honeoye Lake in my kayak. I pulled it into the yak with me and while I was reaching for the pliers, it thrashed and speared me.
A couple of friendly guys in a boat near me tried to help me out with the pull the hook out trick. That didn't work, and I ended up having to get it cut out. The real problem was that I had to paddle back to the launch, load my gear into the car and the yak on top, and drive about 45 minutes to get to an urgent care place to get the job done -- there was nothing in the vicinity. Surprisingly little pain, even when the two good samaritans were trying to jerk it out.
OUCH!!!

Yikes!!!! That sucks. If my recent history is any guide, I just had a trip ruined last week by a pike bite on my thumb that needed a trip to the ER for attention, then the next time out after that I spanked them. Your due.

I certainly hope you're right! I'm finally going to have my boat out this weekend and I'm looking forward to having a bit more room to work.
OK we have winners for the month of April. Clayton86 with a 4-12 in the SM category, and ww2farmer(aka me) with a 5-11 in the LMB category. Both fish........obviously............are also, so far, our leaders for the year in each. The monthly leader board is wiped clean for today. Good luck

QuoteDon't need to go into deep details, just in case you have a secret bait, or sweet spot you want to protect, but the name of the lake will be mandatory as well as a brief report on the days fishing.
I'm not asking people to tell their secret waters, even though the rules say "mandatory" so I'd suggest changing the rules or ending the contest or telling people if they they don't want to reveal the water, then don't post an entry.
I understand that it will not count without an "official" weight, but I got my PB smallie at Conesus today. I got it on the south end on an xrap in about 5 feet of water. Here's the very anoying part. I went to DSG this week to pick up a new scale. It seemed to work at home. Out on the water, however, nothing. It wouldn't even turn on. After pulling this pig in, I can't tell you how frustrating that was. Anyway, my fish ruler still worked, and it went a lttle longer than 20". I looked at several online length to weight calculations. a 20" smallmouth is somewhere between 4-5 lbs. As I said, easily my PB. Though I fish a fair number of decent SMB waters, my prior PB probably ran a measly 1.5. I just seem to have better luck with LMB. Surface water temp. at the south end was just 50. I caught another, almost as large on the north end and the surface water temp was 60. I guess that south wind was really pushing the warm water.
Anyway, here's the fish
Nice smallie. Having had lots of Conesus smallmouth in my boat, and knowing how thick and filled out they are I would say that's a 4+ lber all day long, probably pushing 5.
I'll throw up the first largemouth for May. It won't take much to beat it, but at least I can be in the lead for a brief moment. lol Silver Lake on a frog.
Congratulations McGuirk and WNY on great fish.
QuoteI just seem to have better luck with LMB.
You're hardly alone. SMB are not as widely distributed as LMB and not as available in the shallow, weedy waters that so many bass anglers like to prowl. I do think they might be a tad easier to catch if you locate them, as they seem very pugnacious. But I haven't caught a smallie in a while, being one of those shallow water prowlers.
I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast...............but I like hot butter on my breakfast toast. I got one for each category. SMB 4-0 even, Silver Lake on a senko, LMB 5-0 even also Silver Lake on a frog.
And the scale shots.............LMB
http://s1057.photobucket.com/user/ww2farmer/media/IMG_20130505_120330.jpg.html and the SMB scale shot.............I am an idiot who don't knows how to resize to fit. I am also on the verge of dis-qualifying myself for horrendous picture taking. Let's hope some one knocks those gems out of the top spot.
Well, I got you beat with a SM, if only by a little. Picked this guy up on the south end of Conesus. Pretty much in the exact same spot as yesterday. I was smart enough to got to DSG last night and exchange the scales, so at least I have a weight tonight. This guy measured a hair over 19 inches and the scale bounced around a bit, but when I took the picture it was on 4.14. (Makes me think that the one that was slightly over 20 inches really may have been a 5 lber). Again, on a jerk bait, in about 5 ft of water. There were smallies cruising all over that flat. I watched this one hit the bait. There were two bass eyeballing the bait at the same time. This one hit. The other one was much bigger...
And the weight:
Nice one!! You are now in the lead for SM.
Nice work guys! I only managed to grenade my motor this weekend.
Uh oh. Why does that not sound good? Do you still have the aluminum?
Turns out its just my own stupidity. Sticky flair arm in the gas tank, so I thought I had more gas than I did, and ran out. Lol.

Running out of gas would certainly explain a sudden loss of power
Hey man, cut "The Kill Switch Kid" some slack!
I actually had the whole thing torn apart, looking at the cylinders. Couldn't find anything wrong. Went to pump up the ball, and try during her up, nothing but air. What a maroon. A relieved maroon, that is.
This one should last more than a few hours.....................I hope. lol Good day on Silver today, caught on a frog.
Great fish. You seem to do better on that lake than its reputation.
DANG! Look at the belly on that Silver pig!

It is the lead.......I didn't crack the 5lb mark tonight. In fact I have gone two trips without a 5lber, so I am due. LOL
Nice fish, Noel!
Got 20 minutes in at lunch today. 7 bites, 7 fish, best five went around 19 lbs. anchored by a 5-7 kicker. Not as big as Noel's. No pics since it was pouring rain, though if I bettered the top fish, I would have figured out a way not to kill my phone, lol. All came on YUM Dingers, any color worked, wacky, skipped along the shoreline, about 3' back.
20 minutes, 7 fish with best 5 at 19 lbs? Yikes!
Makes up for the past week of tight lipped non action.
I can't buy one over 12" lately all my big fish spots and lures are just producing stupid rock bass frog = rock bass, 3/4 siebert Big O jig = rock bass, Bama rig = 2 rock bass lol I give up they are everywhere.
This one won't last long either I bet.
Today on Silver Lake with a dropshot.
That's no slouch!

Ok thanks for clearing that up............dang, I thought it was 4-14, I could have had it beat twice since then. Oh well. LOL I will adjust.
Hit Silver again today to enjoy the refreshing summer breeze, and landed a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge upgrade for myself chunkin' and windin'. lol
Nice!!! Love the color and markings on that one I haven't got one this year that wasn't kinda pale and grayish. I really need to get out to silver soon probably next weekend since I have drill all this weekend.
Well not even close to the large mouth this month but my biggest of the season so far iv been slacking in the large mouth department. It was 3-5ozs go ahead ad add it so my name an be put in to donate a lure to this months winner.
Well............wnybassman wins the month of may for BOTH LMB and SMB. Way to go!!! He is also in the lead for yearly LMB so far beating my april winning 5-11 with his 5-13. clayton86 still has the yearly SMB lead. I will have a coin flip between myself and clayton86 for his LMB prize, and myself and rmcguirk for his SMB prize.
June leaderboard:
SMB:
#1 ww2farmer 3lbs 12oz. 6-6-13
#2
#3
LMB
#1 ww2farmer 4lbs 12oz. 6-7-13
#2 ww2farmer 4lbs 9oz. 6-2-13
#3
I'll start June off with an upgradable (I hope) 4lb 9oz. LMB. Caught on Silver Lake , 6-2-13 on a jig
Nice fish. So far, I'm a big suckfest when it comes to fishing.
I haven't even gone in a while besides with the kids which means no fishing for me but its ok when I'm with the kids. I'm hoping tomorrow ill get out.
Might as well get the June SMB started with a small one. 3lbs 12oz. Caught on Silver Lake on a senko.
Nice if I get rained out tomorrow I'm hitting silver in the kayak.
I'll bump the LMB up to 4-12 with this one I caught on Silver Lake today, on a senko
Do you work lol

Uh-Oh
I know what happened to the last guy that asked that question.
Lol I know he works I think farmers have it harder then us roofers do in the rain.
Well, either June was terrible for you guys, or no one wants to play anymore. Heck, I didn't even have to enter my big ones to win the month for LM.
I only got out 3 times the whole month my biggest largemouth was maybe 2lbs
June was busy here, between too much work and my younger son's high school graduation. I still fished a fair amount, but it's been dink city for me, and not much volume, either. I don't know if I'm just bad or that the weather is playing havoc with the bass getting settled down after the spawn, but my "luck" has really stunk. I'm looking forward to a lot of fishing over the next several days, rain or shine, and I hope to get things turned around.
Wow we must have all forgot or just had a lousy year. I know I had a lousy year fishing
On 12/12/2013 at 8:27 PM, clayton86 said:Wow we must have all forgot or just had a lousy year. I know I had a lousy year fishing
Seemed like people stopped playing along..........I had a great year, but I didn't want to keep rubbing it in. LOL
Quote
I know I had a lousy year fishing
You're not alone in that department. My year was lousier than lousy.
I started strong then bombed to catching minnows.....seriously fingerling bass
Awful year here too. Between working too much, getting kids off to college, some boat issues, and the only type of weather that keeps me off the water (high wind), I didn't fish nearly as much as I wanted. And, when i did go, it was tough fishing for me. I don't know if I was trying too many things, or what, but after spring was done, I don't think I put together a decent day all season. A few fish here or there, but no great numbers and few picture worthy bass. Got a few nice pike and my first tiger, but that's not what I was chasing.
What's the old saying? Better luck next year.
I'm not sure how to classify this year, other than it was a learning experience. I spent a great deal of time alternately blanking and hitting the mother lode, trying to figure out what happened to the Lake O. smallmouth. It was rewarding, and I caught some fish, both size and numbers. Still wondering where the dinks are, though. That scares me a little. A great deal of this effort happened with many other fisherman collaborating, and sharing info. Many thanks to the guys that took my calls/texts/PMs - they know who they are, lol. While we may not have completely broken the south shore open, we have a good starting point for locating summer fish.
Too bad I don't have a scale.
Is this gonna happen again this year
