Well, I've save most of my per diem money from 2013 and decided to spend a little bit on the finer things.
Just ordered a Dobyns Champ Xtreme 704c and Core 100mg. Its gonna be a jig rod.
I wanted a NRX, but at 239, I had to go for the Dobyns.
Super excited! Can't wait for them to get here! If it is good as they say it is, ... I still have a lot left ovr.
Nice combo. Good luck and congrats

I ordered them both from the same place.
I have 3 Lews Team pro reels and several tournament pros. Now I get a real cpmparsion between the core and the Lews team reel.. I'm pretty sure the Core is gonna be everything guys say it is...
Pretty darn stoked. Wife is tired of me yapping about it

I got the same combo but with the first gen DX704. Surprisingly the CORE 100 Mg holds up pretty well on saltwater surf fishing.

I have the 5 power with the same reel as my pitching rod. The 239 was a killer price too. You will love that set up.
That's great, we all should spent a little on something we want every now and then, I hope you enjoy the set up for a long time. I do kinda wish you would have bought a better rod though, you said you use Powell rods and to me the dobyns is just a Powell Rod with more bling and a bigger price. I guess that's why their are so many different rod company's though, we all feel differently about them and I'm just not a dobyns fan.

Friend, I do not think I was pooping on any ones party. I'm happy he bought what he wants to buy with HIS money that he worked for. Hope he catches a lot of nice fish with it too. Now with that being said if you don't agree that the Dobyn's Rods are just over priced blinged out Powell Rods you are kidding yourself and just because they are, that still does not mean they are not nice rods because they are. I just stated that you are paying a larger price for what is pretty much a blinged out Powell Rod, The thing is, I had forgot that Dobyn's has such a blind bandwagon fan base, so please, excuse me, I'll move along now.

The good thing is, I only bought one. And once I take it out a few times and fish it, I will be able to evaluate it myself.
I wanted to treat myself to a top of the line bottom contact rod, because I spend more time pitching jigs than anything else.
If I do find that it is no greater than a the Endurance 714, that I fish jigs with now, then all I lost is 40 bucks. 714 is now 200... No humongous loss. ...... But I seriously doubt I will find a lot of fault with that rod. I was going to add another 7 foot jig rod to the deck anyway.
And the core reel.... Wow... I mean I have fished Lews reels since their comeback and I am thoroughly impressed,... But it was the Core and I paid a ham sandwhich to get it....so I'm pretty stoked. Not a turn coat or anything, but I'm not stupid either... I know top shelf gear when I see it.

I hope you enjoy it. That reel is flat out awesome, you will love it. The rod is good too, well balanced and good for bottom contact. I am not saying it is bad (the dobyn's bandwagon is tough to deal with) I'm was just saying it is a lot like the Powell line with a higher tag. It is still a top of the line rod.

I never even seen a Powell rod, wish I could test them out where I am. It's hard to find a local shop where I live to even handle a Dobyns rod.
Like you though, I treated myself last year by getting "high end" bottom contact rods and boy am I happy. The difference is quite noticeable!
I think this whole bandwagon thing is ridiculous. If someone hears a ton of good reviews about a brand, of course they are going to try it. It's called having a good product and word-of-mouth marketing.
That guy is giving someone crap about hopping on the Dobyns bandwagon, yet he is all Powell this and Powell that. Sounds like someone is on the "Powell bandwagon" according to his perspective on bandwagons.

No, It was never implied at all but you in your fit of I'm better than you, you sure took it that way. Also just because you have posted on some forum a lot more than some one else does not make you the elite guy you are sounding like you think you are but I know, you catch bigger fish, your boat is faster, your girl is better looking and your dad can beat up my dad...blah, blah, blah. That's a mean little reel! A guy that lives near me has one and I was super impressed. He also has the PX68 and Alphas 105 and man oh man, those reels are so well built. They are light as a feather and I know from first hand that one can cast a weightless trick worm from the back door clear to the back alley with little effort. ( said test was with a 2 power g Loomis rod )
Teal, I've got 2 of the Purple Alphas 103L and an ito 103-Ai. These are fantastic reels. The ito disappears in your hand. Only wish I could afford the others.
nice pick up teal. Just an honest question here I have never used a dobyns rod, what makes them so much more liked than other brands. Is it superior graphite, better balance, better cork, eyes? none of the places around me carry them, so I cant go and play with one either. Hope I didnt jack your thread, just curious about the momentum this company has gained recently...

Oh man, I didn't see it getting much better than the Steez but that PX-R is something else. you're going to love it. I quit taking any spinning gear once I got mine. It will throw light baits a country mile spooled with 8# InvisX Flourocarbon.

Friend you have no idea how much I want to hear the answer to this one. I've been told it is the balance and how great they fish, you would think they were sent to earth from Heaven but the sad truth is far from that. This is all IMO and I'm not trying to P!$$ any one off again (Don't get angry for me telling my opinion) but truthfully they were just like a Powell Max, with a little more balance and a whole lot of bling. I have no idea why people are so crazy over them. I tried the DX744 and just sat in my boat scatching my head and thinking to myself, I don't get it. It is NOT those Kigan guides, not better graphite, ok you got me on the balance, that it does have. TackleTour did a review on the Dobyn's 735C and they gave it a 7.9 and people were mad that they didn't rate it a 10. I mean give me a break, a 7.9 was a fair score imo, well ok, maybe a little to high but any way, I need to stop, I'm sure someone is getting angry again. Reading all of this I can see that you would think I am saying the Rod's are bad, I swear I'm not, they are good rods and better than a lot of rods out there. What I'm trying to say is they do not deserve the "Holy COW, God must have made them" Following.
EDIT........True story, this is why I said the bandwagon thing. I have seen people start a thread on buying a rod and name a few other than dobyn's, then the thread fills up with people screaming buy dobyns when that was not even mentioned, then when they are ask why do they like the Dobyns rods, the answer is "Well, I don't have a dobyn's, I just read on the internet they were the best" This happens over and over on almost all fishing forum's.
At least your senseless rants are entertaining.
Thanks I'm glad you enjoy them, anything to help out and at least your rants added something that would help us all understand your view on why they are so great.

I'm not sure if there is a question or what in whatever that meant but I don't recall myself ranting on anything. If you have a specific question(at least I think you do per the last line in your post?), I will glady answer it.
OK, We seem to have gotten off on the wrong foot here so let me try this one last time, while leaving out the part where we both try to get in the last smart reply.
My "rant" was an answer to a question, which was the one that I Quoted, It was not a rant but since you feel angry you took it as a rant and instead of being the bigger man and over looking that I stayed par for the corse, which in truth added nothing to this thread. Thank you.

I'm not entirely sure how I'm angry. Perhaps you could point that one out...
I never once said anything about you not being a dobyns fan boy....
You didn't ask me anything about the rods.
Anytime anybody has ever had a question pertaining to the dobyns line up, I always try to give some sort of a detailed answer. PMs often get answered more in depth since the questions are usually more specific.
Again, if you have a question i or others will gladly answer it.
Anyway, im sure this thread has run its course. Enjoy your stuff Teal.
Good lord, I see this so much in threads about Dobyn's, I do not need to ask you a question about a dobyn's rod. I know everything I need to know about them. Someone else ask the question and I answered with my opinion, instead of adding your opinion for THEM you choose to take a jab. This is the same way most of the answers to that question always go from others. At least you did not say "Well, my uncle said they were the best".

Well, Mr. hootie, it has not been shut down because I did nothing wrong, I have been nothing but respectful. Never not once have I wanted you to see it my way. I stated my own opinion and you and the others took it wrong and wanted to force your opinion onto me. I find it crazy that you would even say something along the line of people must agree with me, that is so really crazy, It is EXACTLY how it has come across from you and some of the others, I and others must agree with you or you will not stop. This is a fishing forum, I have as much right to voice my thoughts as you do and it seems if I do not agree with you then you will not drop it at all. Maybe bandwagons gets started because the product is good and develops a following. I am not a pro staffer but have all dobyns rods and recommend them to others. This is coming from some who has owned St Croix, Quantum, zillion, Steez, Powell, E21, Cumara, Crucial and on and on.
Why do follow the bandwagon? Because the rods are versatile, have excellent tapers, customer service, reliability, and sensitivity. Furthermore, you know they listen to the anglers because they are always expending their lineups unlike many other companies. The champion and extreme lineup have seen something like 12 new models this year in order to better fill the needs of people who wanted them.
Are there rods that are more sensitive? I'm sure the nrx and higher end loomis/Megabass are more so and they also have their "bandwagon" riders as well. Should they not voice their opinion as well? What about the duckett following? What about St Croix?
Why didn't you say something about his choice of a Shimano Core? I mean isn't the shimano bandwagon just rolling on? Oh wait, shimano had a rep for solid reels and has quite a following.
To promote one product doesn't have to disparage another and just because many people like a product doesn't mean it's bandwagon, it's a group of loyal customers who are trying to recommend something to a fellow forum member.
Back on topic. Congrats on the purchase. The 734 is one of the most versatile rods in the lineup and can do abit of everything from spinnerbaits to super spooks to jigs. The core is a great reel of which the only modification I made on mine was a hawgtech handle since it was longer. Oh wait, I'm in the hawgtech bandwagon I guess for suggesting them.

I did say something about the reel on page 2, it is awesome. People just took this to another level. The bandwagon comment was explained a little but I guess that was my fault because none of you had any idea what exactly I meant by that.
Thanks for the post and your views on the rod Grantman83
Thank you. Forgot to mention
The reason people where upset with the score on Tackletour was based off of a few legitimate complaints.
First, the rod lost points for being labelled a MH when it is clearly an XH. The reason people where upset is because the champion 735 is a MH under the Flipping rod system of powers and tapers. Tackle Tour did not know this and deducted points because of their mistake. A medium heavy power flipping rod is much more powerful than a regular medium heavy, say the dx703 or a medium heavy cranking rod such as the 705cb. All medium heavy, but different designations. Same thing with crankbait rods etc.
Also, points for were deducted for the guides LOOKING upside down, not actually being so.
The price was seen as a negative, but Valley Sports can give a great deal, thereby lowering the cost and consequently "raising" the score.
Lastly, it lost points for not having a rod sleeve which only comes with a high end, select few rods.
Take those negatives which a many feel unfairly scored the rod lower, and you can see that the rod was a better than the rating given it.
*end scene*
Combo arrived yesterday. Did some pitching out in the yard today with it and I can say I am very impressed.
