I'm looking at the rods, they have new berkley shock and regular for 39.99
falcon bucoo micro guide rods, skeet, kvd microguide tours, vendettas, daiwa jupiters, and other falcon inshore rods on the shelf
Nice being able to buy a decent rod at 3am lol
Must be nice, the best rods our walmarts carry are the berkley shocks lol.
They also have abu pro and silver Max combos as of recent
Walmart had those for a while, check their website, they do have big inventory to choose from but stocking stores is subject to sales
We recently just got an upgrade as descibed. I am excited.

The website always had good inventory but the store not so much. I saw kvd frogs the other day so maybe they will carry more tackle
Yeah my local wal-mart has stepped it up too, good to see that, they seem to be getting some better tackle as well.
The reason they stepped it up is because they fired the French Guy that they brought on several years ago to revamp the store design. He's the one who got rid of so many tackle and craft/fabric departments in many stores. Well last year Wal-Mart finally realized that their bottom line had been heavily damaged by this Guy so they canned him and hired some "Good Ol Boy" from Alabama. Things should slowly start to look better at Wally World.
My local WM has been a joke tackle and rod/reel wise, so this would be a great change. I don't have a local tackle shop (BPS is 90 minutes away), so it would be great to be able to pick up some decent gear there in a pinch. I did see that they actually had a pack of authentic Senkos the other day... it had one peg mixed in with about 20 Yum pegs on the wall but it's a start. No rods over 39.99 yet.
Are you up in sac also? I noticed yesterday they got some decent stuff in. Also looks like they are going to start carrying senkos instead of flash.
My 2 local Wal-Marts have squat for fishing tackle. Nothing ever goes on sale unless a rod gets damaged. They had 2 Lightnings and one Cherrywood for sale 2 years ago. Only one rod wasn't damaged so I got a Lightning for $17.
I hope my stores start carrying a little better gear. Also hope they have a sale on fishing gear once in awhile.
Fishing depts in Delray and Boynton have shrunk to nothing.
my wal mart has shimano citica's, curado's, pflueger president spinning reels, Skeet reese reels, adrent reels, Falcon rods, berkely lightin shock rods, skeet reese rods, KVD rods, and abu garcia rods.
Their tackle is also starting to get better.
Looks like a better deal that bps to me at the moment.
My wal-mart has Pflueger President reels for 59.99. Made me pretty excited!

We're sandwiched between Cabela's, 2 Bass Pro Shops, and a Roger's Sporting Goods, along with 3 Dicks Sporting Goods all within 30 minutes of here. I can't really blame the local wally worlds for not even trying to carry anything but the basics in the sporting goods department.
kinda the same way around here, gander mtn is 20mins one and dicks is 20mins the other way
same scenario, DSG is less than 1 mile away, gander and sports authority are near by also. I like the extra optionsOn 1/28/2012 at 9:14 AM, Senkoman12 said:kinda the same way around here, gander mtn is 2omins one and dicks is 20mins the other way
Looks like I need to go help the wife with her walmart shopping next time. . I'm such a good husband.

Thanks for the info.
One of the guys I fish with on occasion is a former store manager for Walmart, at present a store manager for Lowe's, he told me it's up to the individual manager on what each Walmart stocks. Maybe the policy has been modified, but see things getting worse not better in my area.
added the pic I took to the 1st post

Unforuately true...... Since i started buying out all the grubs @ mine....they are stocking em' like crazy to keep up with it. They stock up what sells here. What doesn't sell goes "on sale" and never gets restocked again.
Stopped at the one local store tonight. No change.
man i really hope the wal marts in my area step it up, theyre ok but nothin like the ones some of you guys are describing.
Dude there is no way I could see any of the Walmarts in the Chicago area doing this. Every fishing dept. I have seen is in the back, completely unsupervised and every rod on the rack is always damaged in one way or another. I think people just go through the aisle and f*%& up the rods for fun.
Would be cool though because I always end up w/ walmart store credit from returning things.

I wanna move to where this guy lives!
d**n!! I wish my walmarts were like that! the best things mine have are these really old Quantum bait-casting rods, nothing over 20$ When ever i go out to get quality fishing stuff i go to dsg, which is a good 30 min ride from my house but i have a sports athourty pretty close with some decent tackle!

Them were my sentiments exactly when I read the post.
I hope you didn't get kicked out. Taking photos in Walmart usually results in you getting the boot.
i stopped in a wal mart yesterday in the closest "big" town. they had all the stuff already mentioned. they had the clunn cranks and the strike king tg weights about $1 or more cheaper than everywhere i've seen them online.
i haven't checked my local wal mart yet but i don't really expect them to step it up.
They salute me in this store.I take pics all the time lol. I shoot video in there at times. Never had problemsOn 1/30/2012 at 11:29 AM, Packard said:I hope you didn't get kicked out. Taking photos in Walmart usually results in you getting the boot.
ive seen walmarts tackle slowly improve over the years. so has their reel selection. i havent seen any of the local ones upgrade rods though.
my local one also never has sales. the other two that are further away but i pass on the way to work always have sales though, so i check them out on occasion. found a bunch of Red Eye Shads for 2.50 one time, and also some select rapalas were on sale for 2.50.
i actually think they have a better selection of hooks and sinkers than BPS
I saw my Walmart got KVDs, SK jigs, falcon rods, etc in too. Bout time they got in some decent stuff!
SOS, unfortunately
They added a bunch of reels. Caenans, victory spinning and casting, orra spinning reels, penns. Looks like more to come
I am going to have to check the wally worlds out near me.Thanks for sharing the info!
Nothing cool at my Walmart. A couple years ago they got rid of all their decent stuff so I scored some ABU C3s for $35 and a Revo S for $75. They still carry the BCX turds though.
Stopped in wally world for some coolant and checked out the fishing dept really quick. pleasantly surprised to see falcon bucoo micro guides in 4 different models. nice, hopefully more to come
I think I hit the motherload with m y Wally world.. I've been slowly seeing improvements with better rods etc.. Well after a couple of weeks of not lookin I went back in they have vengeance and vendetta rods, skeet w&m cranking rods , Kvd cranking rods , bucco casting rods, Daiwa Jupiter rods, rc square bills, zman elastec plastics, tight line plastics, sk tungsten weights , suffix 832 lines and other misc goodies. All that only 3 mins from my house. I'm gonna be a poor man with lots of tackle
yeah i talk to the sporting goods guy at mine and he told me they are doing a total revamp of there store i am in upstate new york
i hit the south sacramento and the west sacramento stores and i'm seeing the kvd tour rods, the skeet reese sticks and the falcon bucoos. however, the prices are full retail and no cheaper than anywhere else so i don't see the point [scratches head].

so you can get that worm rod and get milk and eggs in the same place

I wouldn't buy a $100+ rod at WM. Just think of how many slack-jawed mouth breathers have messed with it, tapped the tip (and the blank) on the shelves, rubbed the tip on the floor, etc to test the sensitivity, and how many times it has fallen out of the crappy racks they keep them in.
Thanks, but I'll pass.
The local walmart has started stocking the Vendettas, KVD and Skeet Rods, also shimano reels, I'm glad for the change. The closest BPS is a 2 1/2 hour drive one way, the local tackle shop doesn't carry anything decent either. So I'm hoping the selection in the baits will improve also.

this is somewhat true about the way the store their rods. you grab one off the shelf and 10 fall down on top of you with it. I would advise anyone that buys one just to give it a quick inspection. check the tips, guides, and reel seat. my brother in law was buying a rod and reel one time to pair up from walmart. it was an abu cardinal 104 and a rhino rod, standing in line with him to pay for it i realized the tip on the rod was all bent out of shape and went and found a good one on the rack.

Walmart has a great return policy....just sayin.
I'm sure they do, but I'd rather not have to find out first hand.
I guess my situation may be a bit different than some of the other members here since I have BPS, DSG, and Academy within 20 minutes of the house. Unless WM is selling them at a substantial discount (and they're not), I have no reason to buy my rods there.
It seems Walmarts in more popular bass fishing areas have better quality equipment.
In the northeast(Mass), the best bass rod they sell may be a $29 Ugly Stik
I was in Walmart today to buy a new vacuum cleaner and remembered this thread so I figured I would check out te crappy fishing section. I was shocked!! They have Vengeance and vendetta rods, some Daiwa rods and the KVD rods that go for $140. I saw Skeet reels and a Shimano Caenan. However, the bait selection was crap as usual. Hopefully they will continue to improve their selection.
Cliff
Our WalMart has also started carying new plastics, rods, terminal tackle, etc. BUT I hate the fact that they DO NOT carry EWG hooks in ANY brand anymore! That kind of grinds my gears. And the store is only 5 minutes from my house.. I have to order online or drive to Dicks Sporting goods 35 minutes away or Bass Pro and hour away haha. Anyone else seeing this?
The local Walmart here is getting better stuff too. So far they have Falcon Bucoo rods, KVD rods, and the manager said while I was looking at them, to come back in a few weeks, the entire fishing section is getting restocked with new and higher end stuff.

The same thing out here in So Cali.
Mine recently added quite a bit of new tackle in addition to all the new rods, saw some Yamamoto Senkos, a bunch of SK crankbaits including some XS series and KVD 2.5s and 1.0s, they had some Rick Clunn Cranks and XCalibers too, lots of new spinnerbaits as well, War Eagles and some of the delux SK models. There was even more that I've forgotten, I was impressed.
Im glad to see it. For the most part the local Dick's stocks up once or twice at the beginning of the season and by fathers day fishing is done. The local pro stores only carry selections of specialty items and the pricing is nuts. They are great for what is "hot here and now" but again pricing is Rough. I hope Walmart gets back to the way they used to be. I like the mom and pops stores, But someone need to have the basics cheap.

Same here in Franklin, things are looking up.. for now....
Just checked my WM here in eastern Iowa (Davenport) and they are clearing out quite a few cheaper rods on sale right now along with some lures and softbaits ...I am hoping it is to make room for some nicer quality gear and tackle.

Could you say which walmart this is in NY? Hoping its one by me!!
I guess I'm going to have to check out wal-mart. I've never been to fond of their selections. Maybe they'll change my mind!!
I stoped by my local Wally world yesterday for the first time in 2 months and all I can say is wow. They have falcon rods all the Abu rods exept the Villan line. Abu max baitcasters and the orra baitcaster and spinner. They also have a bunch of the quantiums I didn't stop and look to in depth the wife was hounding me " you can't fish for another year why you looking" I don't know if I could buy rods from there cuz punk kids or maybe the employees idk throw basketballs and such in the racks banging up the guides on the rods. It is nice to see em step it up they started carrying owner hooks as well in the fall but seeing Abu,falcon, and quantum was quite a surprise.

Just wanted to follow up on this one. I'm in Davenport and they definitely did end up upgrading the selection at the West Davenport store. I haven't been in the Elmore location but I assume it's the same way. Vendettas, Vengeance, KVD rods, etc. They had a lot of stuff that wasn't there just a few months ago.
Mine still blows when it comes to fishing tackle, rods and reels are crap and selection of softplastics are pretty lame. Although, they did have Trokar hooks, and viscous fluorocarbon. The nearest tackle shop to me though is a hardware store. Best reel they got is a revo s. Rods are ugly sticks. They are getting a better selection of lures and am happy to see that. My area is mainly walleye and pike/muskie fishing. So seeing some bass tackle makes me really happy.

I've stopped going in our WM, it started to look like a K-Mart. I'd rather order on-line and save the two hour R/T to PBS. Our local tackle shop is rip-off city.....

I live like 2 minutes from W. Kimberly Walmart...selection is so much better, just picked up some KVD square billed cranks the other day.
I posted earlier about mine. Was there again last night. Still have squat. Especially when it comes to rods and reels. I did pick up a couple Rapala DT-6 crankbaits at half price and a few other items on sale such as the only Strike King jig left, a few Gamakatsu hooks and 3/16 oz. Strike King Spinnerbaits. Wish I had gotten there when they first put this stuff on sale. Many items were already sold out. Normally nothing is on sale at this store (in the fishing line).
I went to my local WM recently, they now have tungsten weights, Abu Garcia and Falcon rods, and an increased quantity and quality of reels and lures. It's too bad I don't need any more rods and reels at this point, or I'd have a shopping spree.
the wallmart we have here carries abu garcia, i bought the vengence pole from wallmart i just couldnt pass up the offer they had
I just noticed today mine is also carrying kayaks and bassraider boats. The kayaks are only $180 I didn't see price on the raider.
OK, you made me do it....
While I was out today, I stopped into our WM. I must say it was cleaner, I didn't have to step over anything; but I did see items laying in a few isles. I didn't see any noticeable change in the fishing area. So, for me, on a 1 - 10 scale I'll give it a 3.
Farm and Fleet currently has Shad Raps at $4.99.
My local Walmart in Wichita really steeped it up. It multiplied their tackle by at least 4, their rods and reels too.
The one near me expaned their selection of rods, reels and baits. Not great but much better. I don't think anybody mentioned it but the reason Walmart dumped their tackle sections was one of the corporated officers was knee-padding Lewinsky style for a certain animal rights org. When he got the boot, they decided to bring back outdoor sports.
went to the west sacramento walmart a couple of days ago...they had luckycraft pointers!!! still, they weren't any cheaper than anywhere else so i'd still rather buy from a board sponsor.
Just bought a KVD crankin Rod at my local WM....
Everytime I go back they have more NEW items, I stop by the fishing department every visit now!
I just like to go in there and look to see what they have. Occasionally I buy a bait or two. Sometimes more than that. I do like the Ugly Stiks they have, and I am glad to see them moving in the direction of better tackle and equipment (again). They have a Pflueger President combo that I think would be nice. For $80, how would you beat it?? I think it would make a pretty fair cranking rod for people who like spinning gear since the rod feels so limber.
I worked there in the 90's and early 2000's. In the 90's, they had a downright decent selection of reels and other stuff. By the time I quit in 2002 it had fallen way down, and in recent years it's just dried up completely. They don't even have a glass case anymore with the nicer reels inside of it. But it looks like they might be making a comeback now. Still not anywhere near as nice as it was once, but better than last year for sure.
