As the topic states what's your fav rod for 250 or over. Let's stay in reason and not say a megabass destroyer phrase 3 or something.
Over 250, but not too far over huh?
How about 250 to 400?
St Croix legend elite mhf. My jig stick!
Price based off of retail pricing or what you can find on sale or used?
For me it would be the Orochi XX EMTF if we are talking full retail price
For me it would be the notinthislifetime-MH-Fast.
Toxic Custom Rods JWD Series
Legend Tournament and Legend Elite
I like my Megabass destroyer but in your price range Id try one of the Megabass xx rods. I have the Perfect Pitch and its a nice stick.
dont own one but if i spend that much itll probably be a custom

Anything G LOOMIS!

I have two....St Croix Legend Extreme 6'8" m/XF spinning (recoil guides version). Amazing soft plastics rod, love fishing weightless senkos on it. Second would be the Megabass Orochi XX, and while I just got it I think it's the Diablo Spec R, it just has that "it" factor and its apparent already it will serve a lot of purposes very well.
But in that price range I would highly recommend St Croix Legend Elite or Extreme rods if you like more conservative/traditional domestic sticks. If you like are interested in something different with that JDM look and really versatile performance I highly recommend the Orochi XX.
Don't know, cant afford one.....

Sure wish I was able to post something here
Mike
Sage XP or the sage LM bass II
for conventional rods i have no clue as i haven't fished anything that expensive lol
Dobyns DX 746.
Loomis GLX BCR874 I love this rod, on a cheaper note, I think the *** heavy/fast has a similar stiffer tip, which reminds me of the glx and I like that rigidity over a softer tip...
St Croix Elite
G Loomis GLX, NRX
St Croix legend Extreme
Loomis NRX
I own Legend Tournaments which are my favorite for right around 250.
My favorite would have to be a St. Croix Legend Xtreme in that category.
St Croix LTB is the only rod I own in that range. It's a great rod.
St Croix Legend Xtreme 7'1" MHXF
G Loomis MBR842C GLX

My favorite, too. Mine is matched with a Core 50Mg and Tatsu #15.
This is my dedicated rod for swim jigs and soft swimbaits.
G. Loomis GLX line, pretty much any of them.
Thus far is my dx742c. I'm on the prowl for an nrx though, so we'll see if that changes in the future.
Loomis Edge 705-1 Mag Bass. Brian.
The two best rod's I own over $250 are a Megabass Orochi xx EMTF and a Kistler Z-Bone 7'3" Medium Heavy. They are both fantastic rod's but the Z-Bone is a good bit more sensitive, it just doesn't look as good. The Megabass is no slouch though, it is a very fine rod.
For over $250 you really can't go wrong with Megabass, Kistler, St. Croix or G.Loomis. I would stay as far away from dobyn's as I could, I have never thought the DX was any where close to worth what it cost. IMO, that is a $200 to maybe $250 rod at best and you are not getting $350 worth of rod. I know a lot of people like them and feel they are great though so this is only my opinion on them but when you can buy a Z-Bone for $358 it really makes the DX look bad.
My Mega Bass X4 72 Destruction.
Read your last line. Scratch the Mega Bass suggestion. I got nothing.
Loomis NRX 901S.
Didn't pay in this price range though

Arv, I have no doubt, you will have that NRX......soon..... "Here bait monkey",...."here bait monkey."

I'm with the guy who can't afford one. However, at that price I would be thinking about a custom rod.
It will be mine. Oh yes. It will be mine.On 2/28/2015 at 8:41 PM, *Hootie said:Arv, I have no doubt, you will have that NRX......soon..... "Here bait monkey",...."here bait monkey."

Arv, let us know how the nrx compares. I've been struggling with the monkey over an 893/853. I have a dx 743 and x7 extreme mission currently and I'm wondering if I'm missing anything not having the legendary nrx.

Will do. I'll probably post something on the thread I made asking for advice. I haven't used a ton of rods, and usually have to sell to buy new gear so I'll have to add that caveat, but I'll certainly throw my 2 cents into the wide world of opinions once I get some time to use it.
I'm surprised not many people mentioned the megabass xx

I will definitely recommend the xx
Dobyns DX 744- most versatile rod I own
Custom is a good way to go above $250. Mike @ DVT does nice work and he's a lot of help if you're new to the process.
What is it about the rods in this price range that make them preferred over the $100-199 rods?
Weight, balance, components, craftsmanship and sensitivity.
X2. Up to $400 you might be able to find better than the xx, but at the $300 price range there's nothing else like it.On 3/2/2015 at 5:40 AM, masterbass said:I will definitely recommend the xx
Actually more people on this thread have recommended the xx than almost any other rod, except maybe the glx/Nrx which isn't really in the $250-$400 price range unless you catch em on sale.On 3/2/2015 at 5:34 AM, fisherrw said:I'm surprised not many people mentioned the megabass xx
Dobyn's Champ Ext 734 Most versatile rod I have. Spooks, Crackers, blades, chatterbugs, hollow bellies, plastics. I think the price tag makes me think she's even that much prettier. I bought it when people were having trouble with the G1s. Now the saavy series is a great bang/buck option, but oh my, they don't belong in this thread!

I hear ya! I have a few but got them only on great deals. When I compare some of the $150-$175ers that I buy now, to some of the $225+ ers from say the 90's I think we get way more rod now for the price. I recently fished my finesse rod that was THE rod to have back in 95' (at $225) . In a head to head comparison with a mediocre Phenix M1 ($175), the M1 was better in all factors. Just my opinion, and my budget.
It will be the legend xtreme every time.

I forsee your dobyns in the flea market
Dobyns Champion Extreme or Dobyns Champion lines. I don't have a single specific rod I like best. When spending that amount of money I want the rod to do a specific job and do it as well as possible. I'm not happy fishing with something "that works" for that price. I'm not going to fish a frog on my most expensive, sensitive under-powered rod in the line, that's just plain stupid. I couldn't care less what a rod looks like, or if it feels "dead" whatever in the heck that is supposed to mean. I want to be able to feel a bite, hook a fish, and land it without worrying about breaking a rod. I seem to be able to do that with my rods without any issues. That is what I care about it and I keep it simple. There are a lot of good rods out there and I think some of them are sorely overpriced. The $100-$200 price-range is getting pounded right now and is by far the most popular with the best value. I know Dobyns isn't the hot new rod anymore and it will fade in popularity, but there is a reason they have a loyal following and people might be a little surprised about who is not on staff that they think is.

It'll actually be some Cumaras and an ***, haha. Keep your eyes open!
Any of the Shimano Cumaras. Right at that price range. I personally love the grips and it feels great fishing the whole day.
I guess I don't understand the question. If there's no top $$$ limit per the OP...why not just ask what the absolute best rod on the market is? It's probably not, but if it's less than $250...the people who buy boutique rods for the sake of having the most expensive rod (not the best rod) won't acknowledge it anyways because you'd feel like a tool spending $800 on a rod that won't catch fish better than a $150 rod.
(BTW, an $800 rod won't catch fish better than a $150 rod, hehehe)
So I guess the OP should say "What's the best rod on the planet?"

My guess is that OP is looking for input on purchasing a rod in the $250+ range but doesn't want to spend Megabass X7 money. You may have missed it where he added the $400 cap, which is unfortunately just short of X4 money.
Also, no reason to stir the pot. If you don't like expensive rods, don't buy them.

I agree. It may be true that a $100 rod will catch fish the same as an $800 rod, but IMHO you'll enjoy fishing more with the expensive rod. And isn't that the point of bass fishing? Enjoyment?
Great.... The most expensive stick I've bought to date is an Abu Villain, one of my favorites. After reading this thread I've got 'the monkey' whispering Dobyns, Loomis, And St. Croix ....
Anyone have any monkey repellant?

Don't expect a performance upgrade going from a Villain to a top end rod.

The only bait monkey repellant I've ever seen was my Wife and she is d**n good at it too. If not for her our house could be made out of fishing rods by now.
My wife looks at the bank statement and knows immediately I've been buying more fishing "crap" by seeing the Japaneese names on the transaction. On 3/6/2015 at 3:29 PM, SenkoGuru said:The only bait monkey repellant I've ever seen was my Wife and she is d**n good at it too. I've also thought of building a log cabbin out of rod tubes.

No reason to spend more than $250 IMO to be completely honest.
13 *** Black. Honestly I love my NRX but it's not that much better than the Envys. Recoils, ultra light blanks, crisp as a brand new $100 bill and more sensitive than a 15yo girl... And you could buy two Envys and still have money left over when compared to the NRX. Honestly with how versatile the tips/blanks/backbone is in every *** Black model I've tried, you seriously cannot go wrong. Try to find all the features and advantages in the *** elsewhere and you'll seriously either be buying a full custom or a top of the line $500 rack rod. IMO they are a serious bargain for what they're being sold for. I'm honestly waiting for them to jump up by like a hundred bucks or more one of these seasons.
I have been wrestling with getting a 7'1" MLXF *** spinning rod for some time... I don't think I'll be able to hold out much longer once they're back in stock.
