Hi all,
Ever get such a bad bird's nest that you just end up cutting line?
I usually don't have too many problems getting out bird nests but got a bad one with Fluro line. I got so frustrated that I just ended up cutting it. I tried the thumb trick but I already picked at it too much that it didn't do much. Is mono and fluro the same difficulty when it comes to birdnests?
I think anyone who has used baitcasters for very long has had a few on them.

Yep, it happens to the best of us. Snagging something on the back swing is the biggest culprit for me.
Today I hooked a bass and he jumped and spit the hook, when my bait came flying back at me my line made 14 Egyptian Pile Driver knots up and down my rod, I just cut the line and got on with fishing...
I have done it three times this year, which is a first. One was caused by a guy at Gander Mountain putting the line on wrong/loose. The other two are on me. I casting near the bank and snagged a weed behind me and the other was caused by getting the lure snagged on the side of the boat during a cast. Any other backlashes, I can usually dig out with out issue.
More than once...And will probably happen again.
Mike
I fish with braid and about a 6' flouro leader, and I am a patient guy. If I have a severe backlash, I will park the rod and pick up another. When I get home I put the offending reel under a magnifier and slowly remove the backlash. My worst one took me over an hour to remove. One of the great things about braid is that it's almost impossible to damage it while picking out the knots. Now that I have finished patting myself on the back, there was one occasion when I inadvertently threaded my line through the foot of the guide on the tip of the rod, instead of through the eye. I made what was to be a long cast and the knot on the leader hung up in the foot. The line on my reel exploded into the worst backlash I had ever seen. It actually looked like a real bird's nest. I never even considered taking that one home for a rescue. I cut it off the reel.
No, Never.
I did it today.
Pitching a t-rig over and over. ...getting small over runs here and there. Didn't pay attention. Saw a stump out deep and swung for the fences- snap! A small knot caught on a line guide and my lure went one way while my reel just kept going for that 50yd cast!
I picked it for about two minutes and decided the line was too damaged at that point.
Cut it all out and respooled it in about 5 minutes.
It doesn't happen much. ....but once or twice a year is enough to bring a spool of line and a pencil with me in my bag- just in case!
Yup. Twice if I remember correctly. One time I spent probably in the neighborhood of 2 hours digging one out. Wound up at the Chiropractor's cuz my neck was out after being bent over for so long.
about once a month! LOL
Fishing near a friend, my lure hits his rod but the spool keeps going. If I'm not frustrated I'll pick it out in 20 minutes lol
More times than I care to recall. The funniest was when I caught the line of my partner behind me. He was busy tying on a jig, and was licking the line before clinching the knot down. I ended up with a mother birds nest that required my patient wife to undo at home. He ended up with the jig hook through his tongue !!!!!!!!!

Yup. Fishing near someone can cause problems. At home I fish alone. Lately only from shore. I get the occasional overrun, but almost never a backlash unless I catch weeds or something else. Fishing in a 14' square-back canoe with my brother-in-law (which is a 2-week period once a year in Florida) takes me several days to adjust my casting stroke. Plenty of overruns and several small backlashes during the adjustment period.
That only happens to you bunch of unskilled newbies.

Now here's a used car salesman if I ever saw one!
Handed a baitcaster to my nephew to do some drop and drift fishing. I said just push the button and let out line til the spool stops. Easy, right?
Well, he saw me cast and thought, that doesn't look that hard. Had to cut that one out!
It happens while bank fishing a lot. Thankfully I don't bank fish very often anymore. Hitting weeds or a tree limb on the back cast or during the cast is the worst.

Thats usually when it happens, is when im pitching a t-rig, and then i switch and swing for the fences cast without adjusting my reel.
My worst backlashes have occurred while using fluoro. After switching exclusively to braid my backlashes, when they do happen, are not anywhere close to as bad when using straight fluoro.

Hahahahhaha! Yeah. ...right!
Once or twice!! Luckily Ive never backlashed as bad on my freshwater gear, had a few bad ones but none that I couldnt pick out...

Now that´s a very nice professional over run.
Ha thanks.....Yea its my PB to date!
Next time you get one, take your left thumb (right handed) and press down really hard on the line and spool and turn the reel.
Takes care of most 'em, even the bad ones...
Old school basser...
Yes tonight haha
All the time. Next question?
Only when it snags on the backcast. Ugh... Those are the worst. You always feel so stupid and n00bish

Don't lie to me... There was an eagle's egg in there somewhere wasn't there?! Hahaha

That's impressive!
Holy CRAP I had two epic birds nets happen today. Unfortunately I did not bring a spare rod and reel AND I forgot to bring spare line!
I spent about 30 minutes getting the first one out and about 15 on the second one, seriously. I guess it wasn't too bad though, I had to have over 200 casts easy today.
Really sucky part was I had TWO large mouth Bass on the line today, I got both of them almost in and one jumped and spit the bait out. The other rolled over on top of the water and spit the bait out.
I've had this happen a couple times now on a single hook style baits but never on anything with treble hooks. I've literally never lost anything that was on a crankbait with treble hooks in my life. I seem to have bad luck with plastics, spinners, chatters etc and other single hook style baits.
SIGH!
It happens... Many times. But I load flouro to the top and back off the controls way loose. Then when I make a long cast attempt and something goes wrong it can be big trouble.

Those are the worst backlashes I have ever gotten. Fishing the remote jungle lakes and ponds that hold big fish can get rough with the casting sometimes. Trying to finagle my way in there and make a cast is not always easy. You might catch a piece of tall grass or clip a leaf on a nearby tree and its all over from there. I have also clipped the seats in jon boats before and those are also pretty gnarly I will just stop my spool with my thumb as soon as it happens and its usually nothing to get out. Rarely do I ever have to pick any thing out. Usually it might be a couple loops and i can pull my reel towards me right before my bait hits the water and it will pull out those couple little loops so your good to go as soon as the lure lands.
I did actually cut out a spool for the first time ever about a week ago though. We were having a contest on who could throw a S-Waver 200 the farthest and I was getting fast and loose with it and caught a mean helicopter. I could of pulled it out but it was CXX and the memory had gotten so bad I planned to respool that day anyways.
FYI If it is ever so bad you actually have to pick at it like with braid or something. Save your self the trouble and cut your lure off and pull it out from underneath.
Also the thumb trick blows and I am sure it is pretty terrible to do to your reel all the time. Just pull some loops and not super hard so it kinks or tightens down on you if its wrong. Probably 30 seconds tops and your ready to rock.

Ok so maybe I retract that statement about the thumb thing and just pulling loops. I have no idea what can fix that or even how that happens. Did you fall asleep or something while casting? Clearly there are some people on here who are on a whole other level and are much better backlashers then I will ever hope to be.
If people are getting backlashes like that somewhat often then I wish you the best of luck and you should starting buying those half mile spools of line. lol
To answer your question in a word...."yes."

lol, it was actually an osprey egg but the same difference....

Hahaha, that was surf casting 10oz + bait and I forgot to set my brakes, as in no brake at all... took about .2 seconds to blow up and snapped 80lb shock leader in the process. Took about 2hrs of cutting to get it out.
If you've ever tried distance surf casting you will have seen some beauties... I carry a razor blade in the tackle box and spare line in the truck....
Is this a trick question?
Uh, yea.... Not often, but often enough...
The worst I ever had was with a Penn 210M. We were throwing 4" suckers one evening and all was well. Right up until my sucker came off at the beginning of the forward cast. What a mess! I was never so happy to get a birdsnest out. I didn't think a mess like that was even possible.
Like this?

I snagged my brother's cheek on the back swing but had no bird nest. Maybe I'm pretty good.
Yeah I've done a it "few times"

It´s like the Flood, a virulent infection with no known cure.
Oh so many times -
When I first started using a baitcaster I had cheap fluoro on it and had to cut it out. Since I switched to braid I've always been able to pick them out. One time I had a pretty bad one casting out a pop r and much to my suprise while I was in the middle of picking it out a largemouth jumped clear out of the water and engulfed the pop r like a great white shark attacks a seal. It was a thing of beauty. It took me a few minutes to pick backlash out and in the meantime this bass is swimming all over the place. That was my most memorable backlash.
It's happened to the best of us. Its pretty frustrating. I use braid on my baitcasters now, so it is a lot easier to deal with a nest IMO. No need to worry about pulling too hard and kinking the flouro/mono making it weaker.
Braid it up!
Only when I've snagged something behind me and try to cast forward.
I'm with Long Mike. Braid is much easier -- in my experience -- to pick out, given that it doesn't damage like mono, FC, or copoly. I have had to cut out some of the other line, but don't believe I've ever had to cut out braid. Now I only use braid for mainline on all my reels, spinning/casting, and leaders for each (don't do straight braid).
I use mono, and all of my backlashes have been pretty easy to pick out.
Only one time ever, did I have to cut it all out and start fresh. And that, was an extenuating circumstance. Trying to cast my bait between two trees, with the closest one only about 4 yards out. Reached back, and flung that bait out there, and it quickly crashed right into that closer tree. In the time that I had watched it smack the tree, and fall to the ground....my reel was saying, "wwhhhiizzzzzzzzzzzzzzz."
pfft.
Just wrapped it up and went home.
I did this the other night with my new Tatula. First cast. Coming from the Curado I's braking system to MagForce Z was a rude awakening. Swallowed my pride and upped the braking force til I get used to it, as I ruined nearly a whole spool of Yo Zuri with one cast lol.

Only
There´s nothing to brag about "easy to pick" backlashes, on the contrary, that only means that you don´t know how to prefessionaly overrun a reel, that´s sad.
When you get distracted by that dumb looking bird mid-cast…

Now that´s what I´m talking about, excellent job !
Have not had many, to the point where they need to be cut out, but I have had a few like that!
Clipped a tree branch while shore fishing a couple of weeks ago. First one in a long time. What really ticked me off was I did not have a back up rig with me. Had to go home and get one.

That´s why always carry spare spools, s*t happens ya know.
I've had my share and then some. The worst was when trolling for stripers with a Storm Big Mac. I had the rod in a rod holder, the lure snagged on the bottom and when I reached for the rod, I inadvertently hit the free spool button.
By far, the biggest mess I've ever made of a reel.

Thanks Raul. It's been a long road to the top but I'm finally so good that I can actually professionally overrun just about any reel you put in my hands. I guess all that hard work and dedication really pays off.
