Questions about Pflueger President Spinning Fishing Reel
Q:
What size is best for fishing trout with 2-4 pound monofilament line?
Answer: I use size 20 spinning reel with a 7'-0" Berkley ultralight rod with 2-6 lb fluorocarbon or monofilament line. Works great for river trout at The Farmington river in northern Connecticut.
Answer: What size reel or line? I'd go at least 10-15 lb line for trout if you're fishing in Florida. And I fish trout with this exact reel and I LOVE IT!
Answer: for freshwater trout, use 2-4lb mono or fluoro on an ultralight
Answer: what pound line
Answer: Have have Pflueger reels in 20-30. I'd agree that if you want to keep your tackle ultralight, get the 25. I use my 20s when I'm going to have to fight through brush to get to the water, or on very small Creeks. They're great reels, the 20s, but they are TINY. Go with a 25 or a 30
Answer: 20 or 25. I prefer the 25.
Q:
Can the line capasity use 60lbs line
Answer: The why to to why someone would want 60 lb braid on an a spinning reel is because some people use spinning reels for bottom fishing. The heavy braid is used not for the fish, but rather the bottom. 60lb braid and 50 or 60 lb mono leaders mean you get some of your rigs and weights back after being hung up on the bottom. Lighter line and you’ll be buying more gear. However, one would be using at least a 4000 and up sized reel for this application.
Answer: why on earth would you even want to put 60lb line on an ultra light reel? Any fish big enough to warrant using that strong of line would just fry the reel.
Answer: Couldn't put much on it I bought mine for strictly for a drop shot reel 10 lb seagur.
Answer: Braid or mono? Braid yes, but get the 40x.
Answer: No
Q:
What is the best rod to match this reel for crappie and bass?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I light rod with a good action 5 to 6.5 feet
Answer: Medium to medium light, fast action.
Answer: I put it on. Sixgill M 7' 1" Cypress
Q:
Whats the best size reel for Steelhead fishing in the river with 9' rod?
Answer: This reel would be suitable for that application. I couldn’t answer whet the “best” reel is as that will vary by angler. What you want is a smooth drag and a configuration you are comfortable with.
Answer: I would say the either the 35 or the 40, I would lean towards the 40
Answer: Medium action
Q:
difference between 30x and 40x?
Answer: The 40x has twice the line capacity.
Answer: Spool size
Q:
can the pflueger president be switched to a right hand crank?
Answer: All the pflueger spinning reels Can be switched to either side. You just unscrew the nut on the opposite side and flip it. Really simple
Answer: yes!
Answer: Yes, it can.
Q:
I have one of these reels. Can i get parts for it?
Answer: Yes
Q:
What. reels. diawa. reels. do. have. that. hold. 50. lb. test. line
Answer: Yes
Q:
Does it come with a second spool?
Answer: No
Q:
I'm buying for a newphew and don't know anything about fishing. I need something that can hold 10-15 lb. test line. Which Pflueger is best for that?
Answer: 35-40x
Q:
is this just left handed return?
Answer: Like the majority of currently manufactured spinning reels this reel can be converted for left or right handed use, simply back the handle off one side & install on the other.
Answer: If you mean, is it possible to switch which side the handle can be attached to, then No. Its interchangeable.
Q:
I cannot convert to left handed because the handle will not screw into the other side. Is there a trick to doing this?
Answer: Its a bit tricky. But installing it clock wise carefully not to cross thread it'll go !! Good luck... p.s. super great reel
Answer: Did you ever figure this out? I have the size 20 and have the same problem. The threads aren't the same on both sides.
Answer: I can think of nothing, except to be sure you are turning in the correct direction.
Q:
Where can I buy a bail and spring pivot ends for a Pflueger Prisident reel # 6730 ?
Answer: Go on the flueger website and email them. They are great at responding back with information. They can ship parts, if they dont have the part anymore, they give you a discount on a similar reel.
Q:
Wich size reel would be good for a 5'6 pole?
Answer: A size 20 or 25. It depends on the casting weight of the rod. However you will get longer casting distance with the 25 as the spool is obviously larger. A 20 will be fine for river fishing but the 25 if you intend to fish lakes from the shore
Q:
Does the handle feel cheap
Answer: No it feels well made
Answer: No, not at all. These are great reels for the money. I have 2.
Answer: Not at all, you will love this product!
Q:
is the spool aluminum or graphite?
Answer: The spool is aluminum.
Answer: Its Aluminum. Very nice real also.
Answer: Aluminum
Q:
Does it come preloaded with line
Answer: No. I have three of these, all set up with different line for different types of fishing. There is no way the manufacturer could pre-load their reels and keep anyone happy. The only reels I've ever seen in 69 years of fishing have been the bottom-level junk reels from K-Mart. These aren't that. I'm assuming you are new to fishing.
Answer: No it does not include line.
Answer: No it cames with no fishing line just as shown
Answer: No you have to buy line and load it yourself.
Answer: No. Quality reels do not.
Answer: No it doesn’t
Q:
what model best match for a St. Croix medium fast action rod? I fish mainly for inland walleye.
Answer: Depends on the line rating of your rod. Ie...6-10lb.....10-20lb. Decide what line within that rating you want to run. Then choose the smallest that is rated for the size line you want to run. Keep in mind that a big reel may not be the best choice. To large of a reel will throw off the balance between rod & reel and cause unwanted fatigue if you do a lot of casting. Hope this helps a little
Answer: Depends on the length of the rod and how much and what # test of line you want to use. But, I'd probably go with the 40 or the 35.
Answer: A lot depends on rod length, line type and test, and intended fishing style. One rule of thumb light line = smaller reel, heavy braid = larger reel.
Answer: Unless you use a big braided line, this is perfect.
Answer: This reel here is perfect . You could go down to a P35X but not necessary
Q:
Is the 35x a good option for most florida fresh water fishing with occasional salt fron say a pier if you have the appropriate rod?
Answer: Probably. Check the salt water aspects at Pleuger’s web site.
Q:
7' med/heavy rod would the 40 size be good? Pike...catfish...use.
Answer: Well, you started with the right reel. The President is the most trouble free reels I’ve ever owned. Expect your children and grandchildren to value them as an inheritance.
Answer: 40 Series for Medium Heavy is good match.
Answer: If you fish with a 40 —- you will be ready for whatever Big shows up. You will be happy with the reel
Answer: Personally, I would go up one size.
Answer: That would be Awsome!
Answer: Yes
Q:
does it come with a second spool
Answer: No. Anyway I returned my because it seemed not smooth (spool was moving harsh when reeling ) but I really liked the design and build.
Answer: NO
Q:
I broke my rod to this set how can I just replace the rod?
Answer: I am sure you can. I know I could with mine. I would take it to a Pro shop and have them look at it. I've never broken a rod before, you got me curious about that. Good Luck.
Q:
What's the difference between the 40b and the 40x
Answer: No difference. The letter is for box or plastic container
Answer: One comes in a box the other comes in a bag same reel
Answer: model. Package it comes in.
Q:
Does the reel have instant anti reverse?
Answer: This real has a switch on the bottom of the frame which selects anti-reverse or the drag system. In my experience the anti-reverse works extremely well
Answer: Yes it does. This is a great reel if you're wanting to fish light tackle. I've paried my with the 7' Shakespeare Micro Series Spinning rod and 4# Mr crappie HiVis. Great setup.
Answer: No
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
I wonder if anyone knows what Pflueger gears are made of?
Answer: CHECK WITH THE MANUFACTURER
Q:
Which size would work best for all-purpose use? Crappie, largemouth, channel catfish...
Answer: Size 30 probably would work bet for all-purpose.
Answer: 35
Q:
What should be the max test weight with braided line on this pressp40x reel because I was hoping to use it for catfish and bass?
Answer: I wouldn’t be afraid to use up to 30 lb test. Reel can handle the line. Can the rod you are using handle the reel?
Answer: I put 15lb. braided Spiderwire on mine and it spools and casts beautifully.....hauled in a 9lb. Largemouth with this setup and dang what a fight that was?!?.....the reel is truly everything everyone says it is.......flawless bail response and spins quietly and efficiently.
Answer: I have 30lb Fireline Crystal on mine and it works great with a 9' rod medium heavy action. Works pretty good a 7 1/2' baitcaster also. Hope this helps...
Q:
What is the best reel for 4’8”rod for under fifty bollars?
Answer: This one.
Q:
What is different between 20x and 20b
Answer: The letters refer to the type of packaging the reel comes in-- the 20x comes in a plastic clamshell type packaging, while the 20b comes in a cardboard box-- they're the same product regardless of which you order.
Answer: The boxing... otherwise they're the same..
Q:
Best size for drop shot rig going after largemouth?
Answer: 30
Q:
What is the difference between model pressb20b vs pressb20x? Thanks
Answer: Seems the X comes in a box and the B comes in a blister pack (Plastic)
Q:
I have the pflueger patriarch in size 25 which is about size 1000 daiwa spool diameter. what is the diameter of the size 20 president? thanks.
Answer: Go to Pflueger's site for the answer
Q:
Can i buy the bail wire for aPlueger President C30
Answer: if he's talking about the one on the reel i would check with the manufacturer.
Answer: Go on the pflueger website, you can shop for specific pieces. Or email them
Q:
What size would you recommend for fishing back waters/creeks for smallmouth as a finesse rig?
Answer: Size 30 should handle smallmouth just fine.
Answer: I like my sp30x , great for ponds, rivers, and smaller venues. Great reel!
Q:
Max drag ?
Answer: From the Pflueger web site the max drag is:
Answer: Per the Pflueger website,
Answer: Not sure on your question. Drag very smooth, no problems fishing walleye and large pike
Answer: Depends on size:
Answer: It will haul in a 10 pound largemouth that don’t want to be hauled in......smile....
Q:
What is difference in box and standard packaging?
Answer: I'm not positive but I think standard packaging might mean the reel is encased in a hard clear plastic container, You know the ones that are so difficult to cut and extract the item within. Have bought several Presidents and have recieved them either in the traditional cardboard box or in the plastic. hope this helps!
Answer: One comes in a cardboard box the other in a plastic cover. The reel is the same in both.
Q:
Is 30 pound braided line too heavy for this reel?
Answer: It would work okay depending on how much line you want otherwise you should get a reel made for 30 lb. Line.
Answer: Yes
Q:
will this reel be okay if dumped in the water?
Answer: I suggest you spray it down with Reel Magic or WD-40 and lubricate the internal parts occasionally if your reel gets wet a lot, but dumped in water once, your reel is fine.
Answer: There is no IP rating for this reel. Therefore you must expect water got into the reel. I suggest taking your reel in for repair.
Answer: Of course it will......if you dumped it in the ocean, you would need to thoroughly rinse it in fresh water afterwards....
Answer: Likely so; however I would still clean and re-lubricate, especially if dunked in salt water.
Q:
What size reel would you match to a 6" Light action rod for pan fish? a 20x or 25x?
Answer: The 20x is the smallest, I'd go w the 25, because it will hold more line and it's slightly larger. I have two 30s on medium action rods. I think you'll like either one you get.
Answer: For a light power rod, I’d got 30, the 20 and 25 are more for Ultralight.
Q:
Which would be best for a 4'6" ugly stick fishing trout in PA?
Answer: Size 20 or 30. These reels run small compared to other manufacturers. Double check the manufacturer website for specific line weight and capacity.
Q:
If i need a replacement part how would i go about that? the reel handle must have fallen off while walking back to my vehicle and i'm at a loss now.
Answer: Contact Pflueger with a model number and tell them what you need. Better yet check their Internet site.
Answer: I would contact the seller. I'm sure your not the first. I'm sure they are a solid company. Good Luck
Answer: Pflueger sells parts directly. Go to their web site and get their customer service number and give them a call.
Q:
Can i use in saltwater
Answer: Sure, use for lighter saltwater fish varieties, and rinse well with fresh water when finished...
Answer: I believe so.
Q:
where is it made?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: The reels are made in Akron Ohio. They have been making their real since 1881. Very high quality at a very reasonable price great great real.
Answer: Well which is it? USA or China?
Answer: From what I understand they USED to be made in the USA. They were made in Ohio for decades but that is no longer the case. They are made in China and now owned by a Chinese holding company called Pure Fishing. They own Pflueger, Penn, Shakespeare and a few other companies.
Answer: China for sure I'm afraid. Source: I looked at the bottom of the box. Nevertheless, it's a good reel at a good price.
Answer: Definitely China. All Pflueger reels are made in China.
Answer: The company and manufacturing is located in Spirit Lake Iowa!!! I've been there!
Q:
Will mono carbon lines work on this size reel?
Answer: I tried both, and both lines work well on this reel
Answer: Not sure but would think so
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes it will
Q:
Whats the difference between the 20x and the 20b
Answer: I don't know the difference between an x and a b, but the 20 is a light reel for an ultralight rod. I always use president real seem to be the best all around real with Pfluger. I use a 20 president for my ultra light rod, you can't go wrong!
Answer: One comes in a box and the other in a blister pack.
Q:
Is this a rear or front drag ? Is the casting smooth
Answer: Rear drag. Very smooth cast.
Answer: Front drag, the casting is smooth.
Answer: I haven’t got to use mine yet, so not sure about the casting. Can’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be smooth since it is a spinning reel. I’m not sure what you mean by front or rear drag. But I believe the drag tension is set by adjusting the tri ledge button on the front.
Answer: Front drag. Casting depends more on line selection, how much is spooled, the length of the rod, and the guides on the rod you select but the reel is very smooth. One of the best values in spinning reels out there.
Answer: Front drag......casting is very, very smooth.......bail engages with authority and I consider it the perfect pond buddy.....w 15lb. Spiderwire on it, it hauls out everything in there!
Answer: Front drag. Casting is excellent. But I have to tell you, I own several and one I’ve had for over 10 years. It’s had a ton of use and admittedly, neglect, but still works as good as the day it was new...hence, the reason it’s maintenance has been neglected. I have a ‘latest greatest’ reel that cost me considerably more. It’s not nearly as good as my Presidential reels.
Q:
Is a 35x a good match with a 7ft medium rod or to big
Answer: That will be a good size, but the bigger question will be what size line will you be using. The 35x will hold a good amount of 10lb or 8lb mono or 30lb braid, but if you're going to be using 6lb mono, it'll hold more than you'll ever need
Answer: I am not sure about that match up. I’m hooking it up with a 6ft graphite Ugly Stick. I hope to try it out next week. But I don’t see why you couldn’t use it with a 7 ft medium rod, personally.
Q:
This reel work good with braided line? Or monofilament? Or both?
Answer: I out monofilament line on it. It is a great casting reel
Answer: Yes you can use any line with it. It is braid ready. It has rubber grips to hold braid in place. One of the best reels ever made $1 for $1
Answer: both
Q:
Is the Pflueger President 25x an ultralight if so how does it compare to shimano Syncopate
Answer: I wouldn’t call this reel and ultralight.
Q:
Where is it manufactured?
Answer: I don’t know but it’s the only real I buy because it’s the best reels I have ever owned and it’s very high-quality you get what you pay for
Product reviews of Pflueger President Spinning Fishing Reel
W. Bunyan : smooth all around
I didn’t really _need_ this, but I got it on sale and don’t regret it one bit! I should have grabbed one more for my lady while it was on sale! The bail is snappy, and it reels so smooth.
Sara S. : Worth every penny
Awesome product! Cast and reel is so smooth. Such a good reel all around for the price of it compared to other high end $200+ reels. Totally satisfied with purchase.
Amanda Barrera Ferguson : Great reel for the money
Came in today and I immediately spooled with 10lb test braided power pro and headed out. With a 1/4 jighead and a soft plastic berkley gulp, I could cast for miles! And the action is super smooth. For the price I couldn’t be happier.
Sara S. : Worth every penny
Awesome product! Cast and reel is so smooth. Such a good reel all around for the price of it compared to other high end $200+ reels. Totally satisfied with purchase.
B. H. : Pflueger President Spinning Fishing Reel was a total hit!!
Surprised my husband with this reel for Christmas. He was so excited and impressed that I picked it out! He's already fished with it and says the reel is great.
Steve Watson : Good quality and great price point = high value for the money.
Very good "basic" spinning reel - especially if you aren't looking for "high speed".
Bought a couple these (size 25) for kayak and canoe fishing in local lakes and rivers for light action rods. PERFECT. Smooth drag systems - caught an 7lb largemouth and 3lb smallmouth on 6lb test (25 series on 6ft light action rod) fishing from a kayak. Definitely exciting, as both smashed topwater baits, but never worrisome about breaking off. Long casts are effortless, even with smaller lures and spinners.
Alexander Ward : PRESSP20X: Ultra Light Weight, smooth action, drag is not great
I got the PRESSP20X. It is an excellent ultra-light reel (barely over 6oz!) for trout. I can carry it around wading a river or stream all day, casting constantly with no problems. The fit and finish is great and I've never had any problems with it. The bail handle is a bit small but you get used to it. It's smooth casting and has a healthy click when the bail is flipped. The drag maxes out around 6lbs so this is not for catching monster 30" fish but the light weight, smooth action, and ease of use, for me at least, make up for that if you're going for smaller creek fish. Especially if you plan to carry it around all day on foot. I've dunked it in the river many times and its had no issues with the water, fish slime, or little bits of weeds that I get caught in. I can't recommend this more if you want a super light reel for creek fishing for small-midsized trout.
Mike : Nice Reel
I've only had this reel for a short time and love it. Looks and feels well made so I'm hoping it will last me a long while.
jim manning : Best reel for the money!
I fish 250 days a year , own 20 plus reels. Mostly Shimano's but the Pflueger president is as well built and just as smooth as the high end reels. My only criticism of the Pflueger President is, I wish it had a higher retrieve ratio. My fishing buddies all own this model and we all agree it is the best buy for the money.
Noah Rapoza : It is a badly built reel
What a horrible reel I have been fishing for a long time the first day I used it it was amazing I caught two bass and it seemed to have proved its money's worth the third time I went out to go use it the gears started grinding so bad and it just went downhill from there over and over again this real jammed stopped working parts came loose after tightening this is a horrible reel I will never buy a pflueger product again this is absolutely horrible I knew I should have gone Penn or just about anyone else I would not recommend this reel I would not recommend it to anyone
Jake : Sad story, solid results
Wife bought it for me for my birthday. This is the best reel I ever owned....until I dropped it to the bottom of a lake day 1 of using it in my kayak. Only caught one smallie on it before that tragic event. I went swimming for it with an optimistic mindset, but failure was imminent. So I ordered another one that same day and have grown fond of the replacement
Pete le Pecheur : Quality and price
Even with the delivery cost of the reels from the US of A to here in France Pflueger reels are head and shoulders above other reels available in shops or bought over the internet for a simular price or more. The only improvement would be if an extra spool could be an option. Whether river or lake fishing these reels do the job no ands, ifs or buts.
Dan Sergeant : Smoothness
A great little reel for a great price. I purchased the President for fishing steelhead,Perfect !
Teryll : Very nice
Got my 3000 model Thursday put line on and went straight on a 3 day trout trip.i own the 3500 also. I felt the 3000 was perfect size for rainbows the 3500 little big for the rainbow. Hope this helps i put some miles on that reel no issues. Probably would be good idea to lubricate.
Brian From MN : Defective Reel -- VERY Disappointed
So many have told me how good this reel is. When I got it, I loved it -- smooth and light. Then I developed a problem where the braided line I used got caught in the bail -- making the retrieve very rough; where the line feeds through the bail there's two pieces that come together, and the line gets caught there. Amazon does not allow return after 30 days, so back to Pflueger (at my cost) it goes for a warranty repair. If I can get this corrected at minimal cost and like the replacement product, then I'll update this review with my thoughts. As of right now I'm VERY disappointed and can't recommend this reel.
Adam figueroa : Fishing reel
Reel is very sensitive, I took it apart and everything fell out very easily. Was recommended it from a "bass pro" and wish I did a little more time researching a better casting reel
MarkM : Works beautifully, it's my second one.
I got one from Bass Pro for father's day this year and have fished it a lot. I really like it, so much that I bought this one, and now I have two. It was the same price everywhere I looked, but Amazon had same day delivery, which meant I didn't need to spend time driving.
The thing I like most about this reel is it doesn't have the design flaw that several Abu Garcias and Mitchell 300s had. I fish with a light braid and the other reels would occasionally wrap the line around the drag screw causing knots in the line. That was frustrating. This Pflueger has never done that.
It's designed to allow braid to be tied directly to the spool, but it doesn't hold as much line as my reels that I've replaced did. I truly doubt this will be an issue.
MD : Casts smooth as a baby’s butt
Decided to get this reel based on recommendations and reputation. So far so good. Casts very smooth. Seems to be well made. Only time will tell how long it lasts.
mr_flea_88 : Great reel
I love this reel. It's so smooth. Is recommend this to anyone
Matt : Great Reel!
I'm a novice fisherman, so don't read too much into my experiences. The Zebco on my starter pole works well enough for the price range, but when I received a heavier-duty pole this past Christmas, I wanted to add a solid reel. Let me tell you this Pflueger works flawlessly! I'm getting farther casts, the action is silky smooth all-around and all the features on the reel feel very sturdy. Completely pleased with this purchase.
Donald J. : They just have a solid, and very smooth feel...
Very smooth! The drag works extremely well, and casting is easy with this reel. It feels like I could hook on to anything
without having to be concerned. I now have three different sizes of this reel, and have 4, 6, and 8 lb test mono. I use the
8 from the boat, but cast with the 4 + 6. I love all three, because they work!!
Jake B : Smooth casting
I am a pflueger fan boy, but I will try to give this an objective review. I purchased a size 20 for bobber fishing specifically. It feels good in the hand, and seems to be well made as are my other pflueger reels. I have a 4 pound line on it and it casts very smoothly. Bail opens and closes without fail. The only thing that is different on this one vs my other pflueger reels (granted all other are the president XT different sizes) is that when you open spin the spool it only rotates 1.5 to 2 times. My other reels rotate close to 10 lines. I lubricated this reel as I do all my others and that didn't change the behavior. It is really not a big deal, but something I wanted to mention. I landed a 13" 1.25 crappie using the reel earlier this year.
LWWInMN : Back to Pflueger quality...I hope!
I have been a loyal "Pflueger guy" for most of my life but was disappointed a number of years ago with a couple of baitcasting reels. That said, I had taken a hard look at Shimano and a couple of other brands after deciding that I needed another open-faced reel. I used it this past week for the first time and the reel performed well. The drag worked fine (I only tested it with one larger fish, however) as did the bail and retrieve mechanisms. It's unfair to ask for a durability rating but I gave it a "hopeful 5."
Paula Owen : Awesome reel
Bought this to go with a light weight pole for trout fishing. Works like a charm. Easy to install on the pole. Highly recommend.

Kindle Customer : Perfect!
This reel was for my fiancee, and he's so excited about it! Works beautifully and is exactly what he wanted!
Amazon Customer : Pflueger does not stand behind their products
I am reluctant to speak poorly of Pflueger products. Over the years I have been happy with the Pflueger products I have purchased. However, I recently purchased a couple of Pflueger President reels for an upcoming fishing trip with my son. One of them arrived without the handle. Generally, with other companies these occasional problems are quickly solved. However, after three hours of phone time, a frustrating conversation with an overworked customer service rep (who originally told me I had to re-buy the missing handle) and three emails documenting the the problem and trying to get a replacement, I have heard NOTHING from Pflueger nor received a handle or any communications.
I had planned on purchasing additional spools but with our trip days away and no handle I doubt I will buy Pflueger products ever again.
Listen, I get it. Mistakes happen. That’s what customer service is for. However, if you have a good product but poor customer service, it significantly diminishes the quality of the product because it communicates that the company doesn’t stand behind its product.
I suspect Ernest Pflueger would be disappointed with his company’s commitment to profits over quality. Even their Corporate tag about “dependability and attention to detail” and “pride in craftsmanship” rings hollow and stands in stark contrast to the reality of the product they sent which simply “can’t perform” without a handle

Allan : Smooth, compact and a good looking reel too!
After reading all the positive reviews on this reel, ordered it Monday recieved it today, Wednesday. Spooled it up with 6lb. line and ready to go for his weekend. It is smooth, feels solid and it looks great! I've got a few other Pflueger reels and the quality of this PRESSP25X is right up there with the "big" dollar reels at half the cost. Ordering another one tonight! Great reel!
Christopher W. Koffend : One of the best moderate priced reels
I have been using Pflueger President reels (of various models and versions) for close to 20 years. They've all held up well for me, required very little to no maintenance (other than keeping them clean and not left outside continuously exposed to the weather). At their LIST PRICE they are a bargain for what you get - a reliable, reasonable weighted reel, that perform well and does so consistently.
Obviously, at their price, they are NOT the best spinning reel one can buy. My Shimano Stratic's and Shimano Vanfords are certainly superior reels - but also cost three times as much! Whether they perform three times better than the Pfluege President model - the answer is a resounding NO, not three times better or even two times better.
For somebody just getting into fishing but who wants a reliable, decent quality reel that is going to last and not disappoint, I can recommend these most highly.
My only complaint with the reels is that they used to come with a spare spool - which was great as it allowed one to have 2 spools with different line on each, for fast and easy change-outs. My recommendation to Pflueger is to market spare spools (or of course, better yet to include a spare one in the box).
Secondly, I would like to see Pflueger indicate on the reel the size reel that it is, in an easy to see and visible location. Since I have multiples of these reels in many different sizes, this would be very helpful. Especially for fishing trips when rods/reels are broken down for transport - it helps to avoid putting the wrong sized reel onto a rod - only to realize this after getting on the water. Because the reels themselves, physically are not too different in physical size (at least at the 3000 and below size levels), this would be very helpful and appreciated (I am assuming by others as well).
But to end this, YES, I highly recommend these reels. They punch way above their LIST price point. If you find them on sale, by them in multiples!
Elijiah : Revised review.
Can’t give it a 4 because they messed up on my first order but the second box came in and after months of waiting finally have the gift I will give my dad so excited. Regardless, it’s a good product when I used my friends reel which is the same one so hopefully this one works just as well. Thank you for a good potential product,
Evan K : Disappointed
After seeing all the positive reviews about this reel both online and in person, I decided to pick one up about a week ago. I ordered the 20 size for trout and didn’t realize just how small it was. This reel is TINY. Despite the size of the reel I fit 250 yards of 2lb flouro on it. I fished this reel hard for 4 days. Hundreds of fish caught, and I noticed something wasn’t right. I treat my gear well, and take good care of everything. But the line twist on this reel was insane. I spooled it correctly, like I do for the tackle shop, and it spun up even with a swivel attached to my line. On top of that, the reel became stiff after a few days and began knocking. Never had a reel knock like that, and I’ve owned my fair share of reels. Very disappointed in the pflueger president
Robert : Good value, solid construction
This is a solidly made spinning reel. Solid bale spring and metal construction makes me feel better. I wouldn't say it is light weight but it does cast well and feel nice in the hand.
Greg V : Not the quality of my previous Pflueger
I purchased this late last season and wound it with braided line a few weeks ago. The reel is noisy and not smooth. I purchased a similar unit at a local store and it worked without fail.

Paula Owen : Awesome reel
Bought this to go with a light weight pole for trout fishing. Works like a charm. Easy to install on the pole. Highly recommend.
Wayne : The handle was inoperable when received. it would not ...
The handle was inoperable when received. it would not go into the reel body fully and could not be removed to switch sides. The usual foam inserts inside the box are missing. I think this was a returned item that got sent to me. Thanks a lot,it's headed back. This also much heavier than my same-size Okuma reels.
Barry Nielsen : Broken
Package was received damaged and reel stem was broken. Returned it, very disappointed.
Pumpkin Head : Amazing fishing reel
Purchased the pressp35x model. Amazing reel!! Been using it for just over a month now. Buttery smooth out of the box. And STILL buttery smooth now. Totally recommend this reel!
@Golfergirl : This reel is sweet
I love this thing. Typically i’m a daiwa guy but I needed something for my jaw jacker rods and I saw a couple people recommended this guy so I figured why nog. This reel is a great value for the price. 10 bearings - you can’t beat it. Drag system is nice - Love the sound it makes. Feels good, runs smooth and looks great. No complaints here. It’ll get the job done.
Huckleberry : These are just simply the best
3000 vs 4000, the 3000 is just 1/4 inch smaller than the 4000. Both would be perfect for bass, walleye. I would go 4000 for channels, and pike. The 3000 will go 6 lb at 230yd, 8lb185,the 4000 starts at 8 lb285 yds . Both super excellent reels! I have many. I'm using the 4000 for 5 inch swimbaits 3000 for 1/2 ounce jig heads. I measured the reels the 4000 from top of spool to bottom of reel is 5 inches long, the 3000 is 4 3/4 inch. The 3000 is top in photo, 4000 is bottom.
gustavooh : sent broken piece in my first buy
sent broken piece in my first buy
William R Fowler : Great reel - Greater Price!
I'm a relatively new fisherman, but this is my second Pfiueger - both operate nicely and have impressed my "Fishing Coaches"
Dan Widdicombe : The perfect reel
For the price these reels can not be matched! I have high end diawa, Shimano but I prefer the pflueger president So Much I have accumulated 14 of them smooth so strong so light. Every time I buy a reel I engrave the month and year of purchase and My go to smallmouth reel when I’m wade fishing the small rivers in north central Illinois is a 20 sized reel pair on an ugly stick elite 5’ ultra light bought in April of 2008! Never been taken apart just oiled every spring and the thing is still flawless I’m not easy on my reels either I view them as a tool to catch fish and I use them as such can’t imagine how many tons of fish it’s cranked in and how many hundreds of thousands of miles of line it’s reeled in and cast out over the years they are simply the best bang for your buck you won’t regret this purchase
Justin S : This Reel Rocks!
I've used so many different brand and model of reel over the years that I can't even remember them all...but I will definitely remember this Pfleuger! It's action is smooth and consistent, and it's been dead-reliable. Paired with an Ultra-Lite 6' UglyStik and 4lb test, it's a trout catching machine.
Kyle Downey : Okay reel. Good price
Update: 4/9/19 3 stars
So I have been using this reel a lot, but it has become very temperamental. Especially in the last few months. About 3 months ago, the reel locked up on me. I was unable to reel in the forward direction, but backwards is fine. I let the reel sit for a week and tried to use it again. It reeled perfectly smooth again. The reel worked fine for another month, but then the same thing happened. I let it sit, for a week and now it reels perfectly fine. This reel is very temperamental but very very smooth when it does work.
Initial review: 5 stars
Super smooth casting and reeling. I had an issue setting it up initially where the handle kept loosening.
Gerrall White : Great Product
This spinning reel is absolutely great. I am passing this judgment on a 40+ year user of many spinning reels. In fact, even for a novice, this reel (with some fun practice) will become anyone's favorite and most reliable for its functions and performance.
Steven M Fetterman : My first Pflueger
This is my first time buying one of these reels as i have always been an Okuma guy... And although i still love Okuma Reels, i can definately see the draw for the President Reels as they seen to be very high quality. This fall will be it's true test as it's meant to be my reel for fishing King Salmon on the Salmon River - If it can handle that, it can handle anything !
James S. Middleton : Gears grinding.......
What a great reel. Way more than expected at its price point. Way better than Soug.... what's its name and Psicifun cheap stuff.
7/6/2018. Dropped some stars. I have three of these. Returning one because the gears are grinding. Feels like the oscillating gear. Towards the back of the reel is where I feel the grinding.
August 2018. Another one and the gears/bearing isn't right. Not grinding. Not smooth either. Can feel something isn't right when you crank it slowly. Catches but that's not it either.
I took the one doing this apart. Figured I'd clean it and relube it. Its like the previous lube/grease had dried in places? Blue grit that wasn't paint. Not flakes of metal like from the housing. I could squish it between my fingers with some pressure. Small like grains of sand but not sand. Was scattered about inside the reel and getting in between gears. The bearings are semi sealed so didn't seem to be down inside the bearings. I could feel the roughness when I reeled slowly however. Cleaned, relubed. Back together. Smooth again. I bet the one I sent back was the same thing as it felt exactly like this one. I expect more from a reel at this price point and reputation.
