I have a Shakespeare Ugly Stik Catfish rod - 7 feet long, medium heavy model (15/30) lb line. What size reel will work best for my rod?

Answer: I would go with the 6000. This is certainly not a finesse situation, even a 4000 is suited for bass fishing, you want the sturdiest reel you can get. i have caught 6 or 7 pound blue cats by accident with a 4000, and I know if you get to 20-30 pound fish you'll want more reel than that.

I also caught a 19 pound Flathead catfish with my 6000. Just make sure you check the screw that holds the interchangeable handle each time you fish!!!

Within standard PowerPro braid 30lb is equal to 12lb mono.

This is my second one. The review is on the first one I bought 2 years ago. I use 15 lb brad on it. Leave your line level 1/16 to 3/32 inch from completely full. It casts very well, the drag is even and smooth. I have caught northern pike to 42 inch and flat head cat fish to 18 lbs and the reel has preformed flawlessly. The brad is so limp you need to watch to make sure it doesn’t lay across the spool face when engaging the bail on retrieve. This does not happen if you use mono. I have owned a lot of spinning reels, and think I would spend 4 times the money for a better working reel. When I first got the reel I thought the handle folding mechanisms looked a bit week, but it has given me no problem, and is a very conveanent.

I'm by no means an experienced fisherman. I bought this real with a light weight rod to do some occasional trout fishing. It has a nice, light action, casts well and spools well. But, and I don't know what that's called but, when you turn the loop over to cast and then cast, I'm used to just starting to spool and the metal loop just springs back and you can spool the line back in. In other words I'm not used to having to manually reset the metal loop after every time I cast. With this reel you have to manually reset the metal loop before you spool the line back in. I find that very annoying. Maybe there is a benefit to it, but I don't see it. Other than that, it feels good, spools well and looks good too. Just not used to this type of casting.

I am writing this because my son dunked it in salt water a few weeks ago. 2 days later it was pretty well locked up. So when I got home, a week later, I opened up a crack, sprayed wd40 and added some reel lube and its like itnever happened. For the price, I'd get another.

I find product ratings can be a bit challenging some times... are you rating on value (what you get versus what you paid) or should they be based purely on quality regardless of price. I find it hard to give this a 5-star rating as it's smooth but despite the fact I've taken it down and given it a good lube it doesn't fly truly free with a good crank. That being said, for the price? Hard to beat. Could be 5-star? It sure seems solid but the real reel test is time... and that is something this reel doesn't yet have enough of.

it was a great real until closer inspection the bailing arm was all bent to hell, and the handle was stripped so it wouldn’t attach to the pole correctly. We didn’t find this all out until the night before our big fishing trip. The reel handle fell off right into the lake and sank. The way the reel was placed in the box hid the fact that the bail arm was terribly bent...

Despite all the salt and sand exposure, this reel lasts through multiple seasons of regular use. (with a good rinse and dry after each use) For about the cost of a dozen blood worms, this reel is a great value.

Love that the reel is extremely light weight - the perfect travel reel. It does well for bass or inshore fishing here in texas. This is the third or fourth one that I've owned.

Their customer service is also awesome. My reel starting acting up a bit about a year in and they sent me a replacement, no questions asked. Amazing.

It is actually the biggest bang for the buck, as far as a small spinning reel goes. I’m very impressed at how well this fishing reel works, for the amount of money I paid. Even if it lasted only six months it would more than pay for itself, based on the construction and quality of this real, I’m pretty sure it will last a lot longer than that.

Opened the box but never fished with it. Upon inspection noticed that the reel felt a bit stiff and not nearly as smooth as I would have expected. The anti reverse is not instant. There is considerable, noticable travel in the reel when you crank the handle forwards and back. There are other reels on the market at this price point with much better quality. I'd suggest either Piscifun or Kastking for a budget reel in the $20 - $30 price range. If you can afford $50 for a reel, you can get a name brand reel from Shimano, Diawa, Pfluger, and probably all the other companies with even better components and technologies.

Great reel for the price. Using it for sea fishing only. I've bought the 3000 and 6000. Sizes seem smaller than other brands. Posted pics to show you size comparisons. Recommend 1000-3000 for bass and smaller fish. 4000-6000 for bigger fish. Diawa 2000 next to the 3000. 6000 between a Diawa 2500 and 5000

Giving its value for its price, I consider it as a very good purchase. At the end of the day you can't beat $20 for a fishing reel. Quality is good but I don't think durability is the best. I bought two and was very pleased at the quality for the price. Unfortunately the screw which holds the handle in place fell out of one of them and into the water. How something with so many threads could get so loose is a mystery to me. Maybe some left-handed relative reversed the handle once?
