Questions about PENN Fierce II & Fierce III Spinning Fishing Reel (All Models & Sizes)
Q:
What's the difference between 4000 & 4000LL
Answer: The difference is the LL. (Live Liner). The 4000LL reel has a switch that allows live bait to run freely for fishing where the 4000 doesn't.
Q:
What is a good inexpensive penn reel for bass and pike?
Answer: I use my Penn Fierce 3000 and 4000 models on 10-25 pound salmon and steelhead in the Pacific Northwest and they have never failed, these fish go on multiple 20-50 yard runs so I would imagine they would be fine for Pike and Bass.
Answer: This Fierce 3 in size 5000 would be great for pike and bass.
Answer: Penn pursuit 2 or 3. Both are great you won't be disappointed.
Q:
What is the difference between the ll and llc model?
Answer: The only difference is the "C" means it comes in a plastic clam shell package. The one without the "C", comes in a box. I don't care about the packaging, so I got the "C" model because it was $8 cheaper. Same exact reel though.
Answer: Penn mfg. list only two model styles the Fierce2 which is a front drag adjustment and Fierce2LL which is rear drag.I think the C may signify rod and reel combo or it could be a old # or venders ID separation from the mfg.
Q:
I'm looking for a reel for my new 12ft pole used for Potomac and Chesapeake bay strippers . Will this work , and what size braid is compatible?
Answer: Get 8000 and pair it with kastking fortis braid you cant go wrong . I use mines for sturgeon god luck and tight lines .
Q:
what would be the best reel for 8 to 12 pound line for trout fishing?
Answer: I've used this reel with 6lb test line for Rainbows. Works great. Has the ability to go up to 10lb line if needed. I'd have no problem recommending this reel for trout.
Answer: The 3000 Fierce would a great reel But Gould even go the next size down. I use a 3000 for steelhead and it holds about 150yrds of 15lb Spiderwire.
Q:
What does clam mean
Answer: I believe it's the packaging. Like at Walmart the plastic package vs a box
Q:
Can this reel be paired with 10' surfcasting rod for surf fishing
Answer: Yes. I have the 4000 series on a 9’ rod. I’d go with a 6000 on a 10’.
Answer: Absolutely
Q:
does the penn 4000 with gear ratio 6.2 can be used for popping ?
Answer: Oh yes.
Answer: Sure.
Q:
how much drag does thw 1000 put out
Answer: The 1000 fierce 3 has 9# drag because better drag washers
Answer: 7lb max
Q:
Has anyone put the 4000 on a 9 ft rod ?
Answer: I have mine on a 9' med-heavy GX2. I love the spinning action on it.
Answer: This is the setup I use for catching bait in the surf
Answer: Yes. It's a great and smooth reel.
Q:
What is the difference between the 4000, 4000c, 4000ll & 4000llc?
Answer: 4000 and 4000c are just a difference in the packaging. it is a standard spinning reel, same for the LL and LLC but that is a live line reel or some call it a bait feeder that allows the fish to run the spool and you can engage the drag with a tab on the rear of the reel or by turning the handle.
Q:
Does the 4000 work on 125 yards of 65 lb braid?
Answer: You can get pretty close to 100 yards of 65lb braid. The casting aspect will hinder your performance. Traditionally speaking, this reel is made for 20lb braid. If you use it for its intended purposes, then 65lb braid is overkill. The drag itself cant handle the application you are using it for.
Q:
What is the difference between a 4000ll and a 4000llc? i know they are both live liners but what does the c mean.
Answer: From what I understand, it’s the packaging. The C stands for calm pack.
Q:
I have a 9 ft Ugly Stik rod and I plan on doing catfishing plus saltwater, what size would be good?
Answer: Depends on the action of the rod. I have a 4000 on a medium/heavy GX2 nine footer. The rod is actually pretty thin for a nine footer but makes a great light duty surf rod.
Q:
What size reel should I use for 15-30 inch fish in the surf?
Answer: A 4000 with a med to meet by rod or 5000 with medhvy to heavy rod. I prefer the 5000. Enjoy the surf
Answer: For surf fishing no smaller than a 6000
Answer: 5000 and 30 lb braid 7'MH tiger rod
Answer: I have a FRC4000 and FRC5000 and have caught up to 26 inch trevally and bonefish with no problems! Reels held up fine!
Answer: 6000 / 8000 size
Answer: I use a 6000 on a 10 ft penn prevail , handles about anything in the surf
Answer: 6000 or 6500 should work good.
Q:
What is the difference between the 8000c and the 8000llc?
Answer: Llc = live line clamshell/plastic case. I have 2 of the 8000 c their one tuff reel you whont regret it.
Answer: I have the same question. No answer. I've attempted to contact Penn CS with no help. I've decided to go with a Shimano. If Penn doesn't answer, and whoever is selling this reel can't be bothered, they don't deserve our custom. Good luck.
Answer: 8000c is like a regular open face reel. The LLC is the Live Line reel. If your familiar with a bait cast real it's like that. You can set the reel to let the fish run with the line and then stop it by either reeling it in or flipping the live line switch.
Q:
I want to use it in the surf with light and heavy lures at the same time and sometimes cutbait in rough surf. What would be the best size?
Answer: Reel size depends more on the rod and line you're using than lure weight. Try to match the line rating of the reel with that of the rod. For any salt water fishing, bigger CAPACITY is better, as long as you're using the recommended line weight. (475yds of 50# braid on the 8000 is better than 335 yds on the 6000, especially if a shark decides to take home your bait).
Q:
Se puede usar en agua salada
Answer: Sí lo puedes usar en agua salada. Aunque es diseñado para usarse en agua salada se recomienda lavarlo con agua fresca cada vez que lo uses en agua salada.
Q:
How many yards of 50lb braid will the 6000ll hold?
Q:
What size do u recommend for a 8 foot rod
Answer: Depends on what you're going for. I have a 6000ll on an 8 ft rod for pier fishing.
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I use fierce 5000 for 2.7m that is little longer then 8ft. I dont know what u wana fishing with that but i use my for every fish in river from 0.5kg to 20kg. But 5000 is to big and i think 4000 is a better choice if u wana fishing same like me
Answer: What type of fish species are you going after? The 4000 should be good enough it holds up to 30 lbs of braid.
Answer: 4000 equals 13lb max out drag, 5000 is 20lb .. think about it.
Q:
Are you supposed to take that piece of rubber off the middle of the spool when lining your spool or do u put the line right over the rubber??
Answer: Leave it on and put your line right over.
Answer: Is there ready for braid lines ,you wont need a monofilament back .
Answer: No. It is there to help tie a non slip knot.

Is this 10 bearing reel?
Answer: no it is 4+1 bearing reel
Answer: No! There are 5 bearings.
Q:
Is the 4000ll model the one that has live liner?

Q:
Does this reel have the "clicker" sound when the line reels out?
Q:
5000 lime capacity
Answer: You will need a bigger reel like the PENN Squal 5000
Q:
Can you use a 4 pound line for trout fishing on the 1000 real

Q:
What model reel will spool 15lb mono?I want to put it on my 6'6" ugly stick
Answer: gotta go with the 4000, i have 2 on 6'6" mh rods 12 lb test line.

Q:
Will the handle of my penn slammer (5500) fit this reel? penn fierce ii(6000ll) ?
Q:
Is this equal in size to the Penn 440?
Answer: Youtube has a great video to check out. I am not sure I think I know what your asking but a 2500 to me is a like a small bass reel. I bought it for lures and fresh water.
Q:
Penn fierce 8000 cost
Answer: $110 for anything over 5000. I have one in size 8000. I had originally purchased two but I quickly exchanged one for a Battle 3.
Answer: I would buy a battle instead. I stay away from the fierce.
Q:
Is it a live liner
Answer: The LL stands for live line
Answer: If it says ll at the end it is.
Answer: Yes LL is
Q:
This is a baitrunner
Answer: The reel size with “LL” at the end indicates it’s a Live Liner which is the baitrunner you’re feature you are referring to.
Answer: Not sure what the question is but I use this reel to cast number 5 and 6 spinners. 30lb test line with 60lb leader for king salmon from the shore in fresh water. I like it.
Answer: No it does not have the bait runner feature.
Q:
I bought the penn 3000 pairing with a 9ft heavy medium surf rod for perch. is it ok ????
Answer: I can’t comment on the perch aspect but I have mine on a 9 ft rod and it works well. I’ve used it from the surf, pier, and off boats <3 miles offshore. It will be capable
Answer: It’s a good reel.. I beat mine up pretty well this summer and it still works. I think your be fine...
Q:
Do the back drag on the Penn Fierce 6000ll spinning reel turn because mines don't.
Answer: Are you saying that the drag doesn't work if you pull on the line? If you're talking about the live liner second drag on the back you should be able to tighten or loosen the second drag if not return it for one that works properly it's a great real
Answer: Are you saying that the drag doesn't work if you pull on the line?
Answer: That sucks man I'm sorry u had that problem mine works perfectly may contact Penn I'm sure they would get it figured out good luck
Q:
Best reel to buy, 5000 or 6000 matched with a 12' meduim heavy airwave rod for surf fishing - pompany blues, whiting?
Answer: Not sure about the 5000 but the 6000 will probably hold more line.i would use it to surf cast. You could probably use the 5000 just as well for what you are fishing for however the 6000 with 12ft rod should be a good combo should a 6ft shark hit the bait.
Answer: Both will look silly on a rod that size and work similarly with it. Look into the 7-8000 models
Answer: 6000
Q:
Witch one would be best for big catfish?
Answer: I use a 6000 for big cobia & drum never let me down

Answer: 6000 or 6500 should work good.
Q:
Do I have to use mono backing with 8000ll if I use braid?
Answer: Nope, Mono backing is used because its a lot less expensive than braid. Also most people never reach that backing in most cases.
Answer: Penn Spinning reels have a rubber ring on the spool that will hold tight your braid and keep it from slipping. However the line capacity of these reels will take a lot of braid. Some people opt to use a cheaper fatter mono to take up some of the space on the spool so they don't waste all that money on hundreds of yards of braid that will never be used unless a fish spools you. Don't be a fool, don't get spooled.
Answer: The reel comes "braid ready" which as far as i can tell refers to a rubber ring built into the spool that prevents the line from slipping around the spool. So unless you want to limit the amount of braid you'll have to spool on I'd say you don't have to worry about using a mono backer
Q:

Product reviews of PENN Fierce II & Fierce III Spinning Fishing Reel (All Models & Sizes)
Kindle Customer : Does its job
I lined the reel with 20lb braid and used it heavily this spring to catch stripers and bluefish. It performed flawlessly. Some of the larger bluefish tested the drag which responded smoothly. I carefully cleaned it after each day's fishing since it is not as rugged a reel as more expensive Penns, and I want to help it endure the rigors of sand and salt.
Jeremy : Drag burned up on first trip.
I ordered this reel in 8500 size and paired it with a 12' surf rod to shark fish. It appeared to be well made with many aluminum, as opposed to plastic, parts. I landed several 2' sharks the first 3 days and it performed ok. Of course, my bass reels would have too with sharks that size. On the 4th day I began hooking into sharks in the 6' range. The second or third big one I hooked burned the drag up. Upon inspection, I found melted plastic under the drag knob.
I understand these are big, strong fish who pull line at dozens of yds/sec. Maybe I expected too much of an $80 reel.
Fortunately, I was within Amazon's 30 day return window and the promptly refunded the money. My first instinct was to jump up to Penn's Spinfisher V for $130. After reading many reviews of Penn's higher end reels burning up on the second or third use, I will be going with another brand. It looks like Penn's famous quality has gone down hill dramatically since moving production to China.
Mr. Brown : they work great and with a quick wash ive experienced no salt ...
After using the 2000, 4000, and 8000 sizes of this reel ive got no complaints! they work great and with a quick wash ive experienced no salt water related problems to them.
W Rhine : Great reel!
Bought the 3000 to use on the kayak fishing the flats. I own a 6000 also for pier fishing and both have been great reels. I have a couple of the battle II reels and the fierce II is just as good.
S. Donald : Perfect for my pier fishing needs
I have purchased two of these reels in the 6000 size. The one purchased from Amazon was about $20 cheaper than the one purchased at WalMart. Both are spooled with braided line, one 50# and the other 65#, and both required no mono for backing due to the rubber band on the spool for braid. I chose the Fierce II over the Pursuit because of the metal body. If you have ever tried to land a 20+ pound fish when the reel has broken off of the reel seat because of an inferior material used to make the body, you understand. Will always shop Penn first, as they state their reels are for saltwater use.
Richard S. : The best reels out there at the best price point.
These Penn Fierce reels have held up better than many of my more expensive spinning reels. I own several Fierce reels that are 5 years old, and they still work great, and I fish them regularly. They require very little maintenance, and as far as I can tell are virtually indestructible. I wish I could say that about my Pfluger reels which cost twice as much.
I also own Penn Battle reels, which are about twice the price of a Fierce model. They are great reel as well, but when fighting a big fish, I can't tell you any significant difference. That's why I don't think there is any reason to spend more money on any other brand or model of reel. They work perfectly, and they are built like a tank. You won't be replacing these bad boys very often.
I own Penn Fierce 5000, 6000, model reels, and I got the Fierce 8000 to attach to an 8' Heavy action rod for reef and open water jigging off the Atlantic coast of Florida.
The reel case is well sealed, with a removable handle for maintenance. The spool is drilled out to make the newer models lighter, and the Bail wire is nice and thick with little or no flex (an improvement over the older Fierce models). The drag is easily accessible and adjustable with the top dial. The drag is very strong and can be adjusted mid-fight with ease.
Love these reels, and I won't ever buy another brand, as long as they make them.
M. Rute : Penn smooth!
A very smooth and solid built reel. Smooth retrieval. There is so many junk reels buy many name brand companies. Penn delivery’s quality.
Matt : Good saltwater safe reel for the price.
Really solid saltwater capable reel for the price range. They're a little heavier than some reels in the range, but seem to hold up really well. I've got 3 different sizes and all of them work well. I rinse all my gear after fishing in salt and that's kept them in good shape.
Brett Suriner : Great reel.
When I was looking for a new reel I was going to go with Pflueger or give Kastking a try until I saw this. I got it for my panfish rig and will look to this if I built another UL/L rod setup. Very happy with it, smooth, light and casts well. Plus it takes just the right amount of line so when I need to replace it I just grab a 125y pack of 8lb braid and just put the whole thing on and it leaves you with room for 5 yards if you want to use some leader. I would buy again and recommend this for anyone looking for a light or UL setup.
Heli : Serviceable reel
Not a bad reel for the price. It was a gift and it’s been working well.
jonathan mckinney : Works great. Not as good as other reels in this ...
It’s meh . Works great . Not as good as other reels in this price range . The live liner “bait feeder “ is amazing . Reason I give it 4/5 . It just feels odd in the hands . Possibly personal preference but the bail hits my hand when I’m reeling it . Better reels out there for the same price .
Lance : I'm Buying Another One
The Live Lure is a nice feature and reeling is nice and smooth after long casting at the surf. And always, I love Amazon prime, customer service, price & fast shipping.
Larry K. : AWESOME REEL
PENN Fierce ll Spinning Live Liner reel is one of the best reels I have ever owned! I spooled it with PowerPro 40# Moss Green Braided line. The Bass don't have a chance with this combination! Put a fluorocarbon leader on the PowerPro, and you have an excellent Walleye rig! Also love the live liner ability using with live bait on slip bobber. With a 6-2-1 Gear Ratio, of 33" per turn, is great! The 2500LL is the perfect size for Bass, and Walleye!
Joseph Batten : Great Real
Use it for Striper fishing around bridges. It casts great and is super smooth.
jch : Capable
Capable but clumsy feeling compared to others in this price range. Was my favorite. Not bad
Nick Santiago : Amazing reel!
Penn reels are the best! The price is even better!
Heli : Serviceable reel
Not a bad reel for the price. It was a gift and it’s been working well.
Jerry K. : Penn is in my opinion the best, they support their products for years after expected ...
Ive had this reel out fishing in the the Chesapeake Bay, from shore, dockside and boat. This reel out performs on every aspect. I would buy again and again, Penn is in my opinion the best, they support their products for years after expected lifetime. Looking forward to catching some more stripers and blue fish soon.

jacob davis : Great reel. I've got the 2500
Great reel. I've got the 2500, 4000, and the 6000ll. 15lb braid on the 2500, 40lb braid on the 4000, and 65lb braid on the 6000. I especially like the 6000ll for pier fishing, works great with circle hooks. Penn makes great reels in all price points.
Joel Sutter : Doesn't meet my expectations for Penn
I have been a big fan of Penn reels for the most part. I had a Penn Sargus 2000 for probably 7 years though high school and part of college. The only problem I had was the bail spring, which finally was bad enough this summer I needed a new reel. For context, I live in the midwest and mostly fish for bass, but I go to florida at least once a year to visit family and do some inshore fishing. My Sargus was great. It handled anything from bass to big snook very well considering the size of the reel. Everything was still working smoothly other than the bail/bail spring.
When I purchased the Penn Fierce II, I was expecting similar performance. My main issue with this reel is that it isn't smooth. If I have a heavier lure on, I can feel the reel click multiple times when the spool reaches the top of its rotation. The reel has had this issue since I purchased it. I wanted to give it a chance to self-adjust, but it has not worked itself out. I haven't noticed this issue when fighting fish, but crankbaits and other lures with some resistance induce this clicking noise.
This reel does not seem to live up to my expectations of a Penn reel. I realize this is on the cheaper end for Penn, but having poor gear alignment (or whatever this issue is) was really disappointing. It doesn't affect my fishing too much, but I'm worried the problem will become worse.
Bruce Kendall : Weight good.
Looks like a quality reel. River has been to high to try it out.
muckamuck : reel jams after 2 years saltwater use
I admit I treat my reels poorly after saltwater, I rinse them off with freshwater and put them away. With my penn level winds this rinse works fine year after year, but the fierce 11 5000 spin caster is more delicate reel and now jams after 2 years. I guess I expected better gears.
Jeremy H. : My opinion for what it matters.
Alright, so, for starters, i have two of these reels. So this will be a two birds, one stone review.
For the 1000 model, oh, the love. Smooth cast, tiny plunk, easy retrieve, and the fish action, hands down phenomenal for the price. My ultralite set up was not complete until this guy was added.
For the 2500, the love is shared! For channel cats, to steelhead, i expected far less than what I got. A reel I will not leave home without no matter if I'm headed to a day at the beach and salt water treasures, or to the lake, for a cast and a nap.
A hands down sucess.
Edit: 6/17/17
Had to pick up another.
Ultralite fishers, the 1000 model, and a 7" ultralight Shakespeare gx2 is a blast, and I highly recommend it.
Kevin St.Onge : Just what I wanted
Awesome reel. Very sturdy. Nice thick bail wire. Good gear ratio. Matched it with an ugly stick elite and have caught many bass on that combo.
Danny Blunt : Great reel
I’ve tried pfluger , shimano, Diawa , abu Garcia and a ton of other reels, this is my favorite by far for the price. It’s a bit heavy, but personally I like that. When a reel is extremely light it’s usually not as smooth as a something heavier because the bearings don’t have any weight to throw around , atleast when it comes to this price range and trout and bass sized reels. I’ve had three pens fierce 2s for about 6 years, they all work perfect.
Amazonhappy : Great reel
Great reels. I’m very happy with this brand. For the money they can’t be beat.

Love these reels, and I won't ever buy another brand, as long as they make them.
amy lavadour : Get the right size. 4000 is fine for a steelhead/ salmon rod
It’s an excellent reel. I use the 3000/ 4000 for steelhead and salmon. It can hold quite a bit of line. It is very smooth and slick and is very strong. Easy to reel in fish or spinners with the nice rubber grip and the sturdy handle. It is very s a very sturdy reel. It does weigh a lot, but that doesn’t matter because it is made with high quality metal and plastic. It is very good for its price.
Amazon Customer : Great reel
I wasn’t always a Penn fan till I got this real. Quality of the reel is great and couldn’t be happier.
John Z. : I have several
I have 6 total 3, 8000. 2, 6000, 1, 4000 and I have never had any probalems with any of them. I do alot of salt water fishing and all have lasted about 3 years so far
The Admiral JT : Went to Padre island a couple of weeks ago, ...
Went to Padre island a couple of weeks ago, my buddies kid used my Fierce 1000 standing in the surf all day. He must have caught 50 or 60 whiting. There's no telling how many times he got splashed by waves and soaked the reel. When I got it home opened it up to clean it out and regrease it, it looked brand new inside. No sign of water getting in.
A Orange : Solid
Solid choice if you get a combo or get it on sale, I prefer these over the battle.
Tyler : Penn quality
Great reels for the surf, strong drag, very durable reels take the abuse and keep doing what u need
Heli : Serviceable reel
Not a bad reel for the price. It was a gift and it’s been working well.
Rob in VA : perfect for ultralight rigs
I picked up the Penn Fierce II 1000 size primarily as a kayak reel for freshwater. This Penn spools well, is lightweight and smooth. Gears are tight; no back-movement at all. So far, I'm very impressed with the manufacturing! Effortless operation. The 1000 is a good size for Crappie, which is currently the catch. I have several Penn reels; this is the smallest (and cutest!). I'd suggest only a thin braid on this reel, so you can get more line on the spool.
E. Roan : Great reels!
For the money this reel has been perfect; I’ve landed a couple inshore saltwater fish that were about 20lbs with plenty of control over the battle.
The drag works great and is easily adjustable on the fly.
The only negative I have is that out of the box one of them spooled the line unevenly. They come with some little washers to insert which fixes this however you don’t know it’s wrong until after you spool the line and see it.
These are my first Penn reels and I’m very pleased.
The Carson's : Did WORK on a 27lb trinity river blue cat
Had this for over a year now and have caught some big fish with it. The live liver system works GREAT. Hands down best reel for the money in my opinion. Paired it with the Penn prevail rod. Solid!
Heli : Serviceable reel
Not a bad reel for the price. It was a gift and it’s been working well.

JJ : Man this is a great little reel
Man this is a great little reel. I paired it with a 4 piece Daiwa travel rod, which I'm shocked to say I absolutely love as well (not a fan of mass produced rods). I'll update this review if/when I ever have any issues, but it'll be a while as this little reel is going to be a two trip per year reel. Very smooth, spool has rubber strip for braid, really good balance.
Edward L. : extremely good value
I paid about $60 for the fierce2 3,000. this is a lot of quality for that price range.
I have it on a 7"ugly stik medhvy with powerpro 25lb line. I use this combo to throw big frogs, chatterbaits and heavy jigs for bass. This setup is also great for red drum, seatrout and such. i've pulled in 7lb fish with out much of a fight. this combo isn't for anyone with noodle arms, but it holds up to bouncing around in the truck, and generally being abused. Ive got these reels in 3, 4, 5 and 6k series. once i get some in 2,000 for my medium light rods, i will have all penn fierce 2's. some of them i've used heavily for 2 years now, WITHOUT cleaning or rinsing them. ZERO problems.
Joseph Batten : Great Real
Use it for Striper fishing around bridges. It casts great and is super smooth.
Eren : I love this reel.
I am in love with this reel. It is great especially for the price v.s the competitors... I have been purchasing other brands lately because they tend to make their reels lighter but the reel really is great. It is lightweight too. I have it currently on my Tsunami rod and it works like a charm. No issues with big striped bass at all.
Chris Cunningham : My 6000 is a beast
I bought a 6000 series for general purpose surf fishing and I love it!
muckamuck : reel jams after 2 years saltwater use
I admit I treat my reels poorly after saltwater, I rinse them off with freshwater and put them away. With my penn level winds this rinse works fine year after year, but the fierce 11 5000 spin caster is more delicate reel and now jams after 2 years. I guess I expected better gears.
D.L. : Five Stars
Caught a bunch of striped bass with these reels, works well for my needs.
