Is it right or left hand?

Answer: I have 2 of these reals and I hold the rod in my left hand and the lever is in my opinion for the right handed in mind because it does have a small bevel on the edge for right hand retrieve,, but I have no problem whatsoever being left handed with this real its definitely worth the price you definitely wont be disappointed

Answer: Neither, it is a semi automatic fly reel. there is only a centered lever used by either hand.

Are the gears plastic or metal

Answer: The gears are metal

Is this semi-automatic or automatic reeel? Semi-automatic each pull on the lever reels in line?

Answer: This is a semi automatic fly . It is NOT an automatic fly reel.

How do you switch the gears to go in opposite direction? The 2 reels I received when you engage lever the fly reel spits line out instead of reeling.

Answer: The Advantik is a semi automatic fly reel. Semi automatic fly reels do not spit line from the spool. each time you squeeze the lever the reel will retrireve fly line. you must strip line from the reel by hand. Take a look at my blog: "The Great Lakes of NYC" for pictures and a review.

Answer: The only way your reals spit it out is that you hand wound the line onto your spool and wound it on the wrong way unspool the line and put the line on the opposite direction

Can you get this in different colors

How do I put line on it or cast ? No directions.

Answer: It is a semi automatic fly reel. the spool can be removed from the reel. the button is on the spool itself. once you remove the spool, attach your backing and fly line as you normally would. if you have never fly fished this reel is not for you. casting can only be done after you have learned to fly fish

is the retrieval done by a spring or by pumping the handle?

Answer: I have done a complete review of this reel in my blog: "The Great Lakes of NYC". you can "google" it. for more information and pictures. This is actually a copy of the Italian semi automatic fly reel : Franco Vivarelli. It does not have a spring. It is like the carbon fiber Franco Vivarelli semi automatic fly reel. The Aventik is a great fly reel. Get it before they raise the price on this excellant semi automatic fly reel. Normally, a reel like this cost about 6 or 7 times more!

Answer: It by pumping the handle which in turn spins the gears inside retrieving the line,,, only on the up strike of the handle , works really nice,, you have to hand feed the line as you pull the handle up if it's a much larger fish though

Answer: It’s a pump motion. I was surprised- I’ve used a spring reel for years and I like this one- it’s light and seems pretty sturdy.

Is the reel a full cage? There reel and spool both are sourounded by metal?

Answer: This is a semi automatic fly reel! actually, it is not an automatic fly reel. There is a release on the spool which allows you to take the spool from the body of the of the reel. once the spool is removed, your backing and fly line can be attached to the spool. I like the fact that this is a semi-auto Fly Reel, and that it comes with two spools, is light weight, made from graphite (easy to maintain) and priced perfectly. Add it all up and sensible price and you have a winner here.

CT06897 : OK semi-automatic fly fishing reel but not a Vivarelli

This is an OK reel. Obviously this is not a Vivarelli, hence the 3 stars. Also, contrary to Vivarelly, the Allen key that is necessary to fine tune the break is not provided. Finally the mechanism is not lubricated. Make sure you do it.
