Questions about Shimano IX 1000R Front Drag Freshwater Spinning Reel
Q:
Would this be an ultra light reel, and would it hold up being transported in a back pack?
Answer: I would classify the Shimano R1000 as a lightweight reel. Although it will fit on an Ultra Lite rod and you can put 4LB test on it- it's just slightly larger than an UltraLite reel. It is durable and transporting it in a backpack should not pose an issue.
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: It is an ultra light reel. I think it would hold up. It's solidly built.
Answer: It is the lightest one on this reel I love it
Answer: I think it will hold up.Very we'll built reel.
Answer: No way this is ultralite only -- I have used these for last 15-20 years ever since "quikfire" came out -- I use strictly for salmon and steelhead and have landed MANY 15- 25 lb fish and one 47 lbs. I use 8-12 lb line and they are great! I have pictures to prove my fish (doens't really count otherwise as too many fish stories out there!)
Answer: yes
Q:
does it come with line?
Answer: No it doesn’t but it works great with 4 to10 # line
Answer: . It didnt come with line.
Answer: No, like all quality reals of any type, fishing line is not included. Frankly, the question puzzles me: there are so many different types of fishing line, with each type of line to be used under differring fishing demands, that only toy fishing gear would include "line". http://www.wikihow.com/Keep-a-Spinning-Reel-Line-Trouble-Free will help you if you are a just starting out...
Answer: This does not include line.
Answer: It does not come with line. But it is still a great deal!!!
Answer: no, most reels dont so u can put on whatever test you want !
Answer: No it does not
Q:
does this reel have only a rear drag system or does it have both front and rear drag?
Answer: Only rear drag but easy to adjust
Answer: the FX model reels are all rear drag as far as i know ..
Answer: IX series is rear drag only but features the trigger flip
Q:
anyone have this on a 6-1/2' light pole? can I do this?
Answer: I have one on a medium pole -- 6 foot and use 8-10 lb test and spinners thru 3/8oz. I catch lots of salmon and steelhead on it every year for past 25 years. Fished the same stuff and keep buying the shimano reels with quikfire. Love the drag at the bottom of the reel too.
Answer: I have them on 51/2’ to 14’
Answer: Would work well on a 6-1/2 or 7' light rod
Answer: I keep this reel on a collapsable 6 1/2 ft. pole in my car for "unscheduled" fishing stops. I have had absolutely no problems with it. The folding handle makes it easy to keep in my fishing bag. I would definitely recommend it.
Answer: Yes I have my on light pole 10-1/2 carbon fiber and works good
Answer: Yes I have my on light pole 10-1/2 carbon fiber and works good
Answer: Yes, I have used it twice on a 6'6" telescoping pole with 8 lb. line. Caught 3 fish. So far so good. Unscrew top of spool to get new line on. Good luck
Answer: I put mine on a six footer and it works well
Answer: Yes to both questions and it works great.
Answer: Yes, of course
Q:
is this reel braid ready
Answer: I don't know what you mean by braid ready. But they handle braid fine. I run 15lb spiderwire stealth on all 3 of mine with no issues.
Answer: This reel handles braid well as long as you don't over fill the spool and stay within line size suggested.
Answer: Handles braid well if you don't overfill the spool. Stay within line size suggested.
Answer: I don't know the term "braid ready", but you can use braid line if you want...Just don't overload the spool...Hope this helps...
Answer: I use braided spyder wire with excellent results.
Q:
Could I use this reel fit on a size 16 spinning seat for an old eagle claw ultra light rod?
Answer: Hi, it would be perfect on this rod. Hope this helps Thanks
Answer: Yes I have one myself
Q:
Lenght of rod when closed
Answer: Depends on your rod
Q:
Whats its made of ?
Answer: I believe it is graphite...I don't have it here at home, it's in my barn where I keep all my fishing supplies. This reel is my 2nd IX1000. When I compared it to my older one, I like this one better...Seems a little more durable, of slightly better quality...Hope this helps you...
Answer: Not sure . But for the price you can not beat these reels .
Answer: Metal
Answer: Graphite
Answer: Graphite and plastic
Answer: I say it's plastic. It is durable.
Q:
Where was it made
Answer: The reel doesn’t have where it was made . But I have 18 of them they are very good reels that I use all the time. I have several 1000 and 2000s
Answer: China, but been useing number of years, good product.
Q:
Will this reel work on a 5'6" ultra light rod? Or is it to big?
Answer: The reel is not too big. I actually bought this reel for a trip to Yellowstone to use with a 4 piece traveling pole.
Answer: Perfect... absolutely perfect for ultralight rod....
Answer: I have mine on a 5' rod for shooting docks. Worked fine for summer, quickfire trigger started malfunctioning this fall. I still use it just manually open the bail. Slower retrieval than I expected. I'm satisfied for the price.
Answer: Yes it will work.
Answer: Yes, it is the perfect size for that.
Q:
Will it hold up to a 20 lb line and/or fish?
Answer: I use 2lb line on the reel. It may handle 20lb braid. It is much narrower. I'm sure it would handle a 20lb fish as long as you are set up right
Answer: These are great lil reels it will hold a 20# fish if you have quality line and your drag is set properly. 8# line is about max for the xi1000 but shimano does make it in bigger sizes. Xl 2000 and up to about xl4000 would hold 20# line.
Answer: No it is made for 2 lb, 4 lb and 6 lb line.
Answer: No, this is quite light tackle for smaller fish, maybe 10lb fish would be possible
Answer: I believe you will come out better with 2000 or 4000 for that size this is more the ultra series
Answer: No I use it for Crappie
Q:
Would this reel be good for saltwater corbina, shore fishing?
Answer: This model is a light duty spinning reel. It is meant for small game fish like bluegills, crappie, small bass or trout. I don't know how well it would stand up to salt water use. My guess is that since it is a modestly priced reel, the internal parts are not brass or stainless steel which would resist corrosion. I don't know how large corbina are so I can't say if this reel is adequate. I would consider a reel specifically made for saltwater use.
Answer: In my opinion, it is a little light duty for salt water, and these fish... More of a "Brookie" type of reel.. I use mine for Bass, and sunfish ...
Answer: Light reel need to go up to next sizes probably 4000
Answer: I use my reel in fresh water and catch pan fish I can't really speak about salt water sorry. The reel is smooth and the drag is good.
Answer: this is a light dudy reel the drag only go's up to 15lb. so not good for bigger fish.
Q:
Can this reel hold 8 or 10 pound line
Answer: It could........ you just won't get a whole lot of line on the reel.
Answer: Great little reel for the money !! no matter what you jam on it for line
Answer: Hi, 8 lbs would be best. Hope this helps Thanks
Answer: No meybe 5 pound
Answer: I have had 12lbs on mine and worked just fine.
Answer: Yes I have used both for bass
Answer: max 6lb test
Answer: I believe it's up to 7lb.
Answer: yes
Q:
what's the line recovery rate?
Answer: 4 to 1
Q:
Would this reel fit on a little Penfishing rod?
Answer: Yes, you can use it on a 5 or 5 1/2 ft. light action rod. I have mine a 5 ft. Shakespeare Ugly Stick. Make sure that the reel seat has adequate space to accomodate the reel. One of my light action rods did not have enought clearance, so the reel kept slipping off.
Answer: I see not one person responded specifically about a "pen fishing rod" .. I am looking for the same answer.. Did you buy this and did it fit? Or have you found another that fit? I too would like to make the little pen rod more functional with a better real. Any answer would be appreciated. Thanks.
Answer: yes, just the thing for small rods, and fish. love it.
Answer: Yea that's how I have it set up 4 ft ugly stick with 6 lb yes
Answer: yes
Q:
Ron, i received your response to my question. thanks, but i'm interested in the 2000 series only.let me know when you have them in stock.
Answer: The 2000 series work well too
Q:
Would this work for steelhead/brookies?
Answer: Hi, sorry about the delay in getting back to you. This reel is to small for steelhead, It will be perfect for trout and below size. The 2500 series and up for steelhead. Hope this helps Thanks
Answer: It's a neat, inexpensive, little reel that I bought one for my grandson and it will definitely be perfect for Brookies on a small ultralight spinning rod. Steelhead ?? If you're referring to rainbow trout, sure !! Perfect ! ........but if you're referring to the sea run you might need more muscle. Buy one it's no way a waste of money.
Answer: I don't know how you fish for them but I use it on the river for small mouth bass. I love the trigger on it. I have a couple of these I bought in the 80's that are now just wearing out. Might be a little small for a big fish, go with the 2000 series if these fish are big.
Answer: This is a 1000 size ultra lite reel. I'm sure it would but you would be limited by the size of the line you are using.
Answer: Reel was junk mine broke the first day out. Good luck!
Answer: Reel was junk mine broke the first day out. Good luck!
Answer: I have used it for both with great success
Q:
How many yards of14lb would it hold
Answer: Not much on the 1000, this is a pretty small reel. I would guess about 40 yards of 14lb mono. The 4000 on the other hand would probably hold close to 200 yards I bet.
Answer: Hi! I use fire line which has the gauge of 10 lb test but it is 20 lb for salt water bottom fishing...I would guess it holds a hundred feet or more...I love them because they are all plastic and they last many seasons on Cape Cod. Good Luck!!

Q:
has anyone used this for trout fishing with 1.5 or 2 lb test line
Answer: I use my reel for trout fishing and use exclusively 2 lb test on it. Works great and has a very smooth drag.
Answer: Perfect, I've used it with 4lb test line for white bass and trout. Its a great little reel
Answer: I see no reason why it wouldn't work, I actually use 4 # test and it works great
Answer: Yes. It’s easy to use! Have owned several of these!
Answer: no
Q:
How much drag?
Answer: It's adjustable via of the read drag spindle...For me, depending on what pound line I use, I generally adjust it to my own specs. That can be anywhere from very little drag to no drag at all. Generally I will test it on dry land prior to using it to approximate where I think it will feed w/o breaking the line.
Q:
can it be operated on the lefthand and righthand. ie is the handle interchangeable?
Answer: No problem. Yes you can change the retrieve to either right or left hand. Don't hesitate to call us if you have any other questions about price or the product.
Answer: Yes, the handle is interchangeable.
Answer: yes it can be used on either side. for the price really good reel used it fri trout fishing drag smooth, line falls off spool nicely good buy!!!
Answer: Si, es intercambiable y puede ser operado con ambas manos. Excelente carrete para pesca donde no necesites lances muy largos. Yo lo uso todos los días
Answer: Yes you can change which side you want it
Answer: yes sure
Answer: Yes this is possibility
Q:
The reel pictured is rear drag but the description says front drag. Which is it?
Answer: The one I got was rear drag. I asked the seller and they never replied so I took a chance hoping it was rear drag. I gave the seller a 3 star review but this reel got a 5 star review from me.
Answer: The ones I received were rear drag. I actually have two of them and both are rear drag. Very nice light reels...Hope this helps.

Answer: Rear
Answer: Rear
Q:
I bought the 2000 expecting it to be ultra light! Is the xr1000 the ultra light?
Answer: I also purchased the 2000, it works fine for fresh water fishing. the real only difference from the 1000 to the 2000 is size. So if you are really dead set on an ultra light reel go with the 1000, but its really no difference.
Answer: It's rated for 6-10 lb. line, 10 lb. Line is not ultra light
Answer: absolutely lighter!
Answer: No.
Q:
Will this handel 10 lb test?
Answer: Hi, I would use the IX2000R or the IX4000R. It's better suited ffor 10lb test Hope this helps Thanks

Answer: Yes.

Answer: Prob the same size. It is pretty small but id say not ultralight
Q:
when you stop reeling, how far back does it turn? I'm look for something that stops.
Answer: If i understand the question correctly, be aware that unlike my other reel, this one allows up to one full rotation of backward movement before clicking locked forward, and once that click forward to the next one you still have a rotation worth of play before it clicks again, etc. This doesnt bother me too much when fishing, but it make it hard to stow your hook on the hook keeper when walking around as it might be either too loose to stay on or it might have to bend the rod too much when you pull it one rotation forward.
Answer: Hi, yes this stops quick. Hope this helps Thanks
Q:

Does it come with the rod?
Answer: no just the reel
Answer: No, reel only.
Answer: No, it does not
Answer: No it doesn't.
Q:
Do they have it in 2000
Answer: I bought mine a while back and it is a 2000, I haven't checked lately but the manufacture should have a 2000 available.
Q:
100r good fit for a 7ft rod.
Answer: Yes could be! Depends on type of fishing and rod action?
Answer: No get the 4000. The 4000 is not too big as it sounds

Answer: To remove the spool tighten the drag and unscrew the spool in the direction of the arrow marked "spool removal".
Answer: You may have to tighten the drag all the way down, then just unscrew the spool
Answer: I think you turn the rear drag counter clock wise or just hold it and unscrew the spool several turns counter clockwise. The guy at Dick's sporting goods helped me when I purchased line for him to spool new line.
Answer: Hold the handle and spin the spool left 5 to 6 times and it comes right off
Answer: It is threaded on. Turn counter clockwise while holding the bail.
Answer: You unscrew it at the top.

The picture is rear drag? shimano ix 1000r front drag freshwater spinning reel
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: the IX 1000R shimano is rear drag. i have one on my ultra light. love it. easy to cast.
Answer: The Shimano 1000r is a rear drag reel.
Answer: It has rear drag. I like it more because when you have a fish on, the rear drag makes it easier to adjust as needed while fighting the fish.
Answer: Yes, that picture is of a "rear drag" fishing reel.
Answer: Its rear drag. The verbiage is incorrect.
Answer: The drag is on the back of the reel
Answer: Yes it is I use it for crappie fishing it works well for me because of the weight
Q:
Is this reel rear or front drag?
Answer: Rear drag
Answer: Rear drag.
Q:
How is the anti-reverse on this guy?
Answer: Anti-reverse is not "infinite", meaning it will spin back until the quickfire trigger is dead top where your finger is. Some people do not like this and complain that it is a flaw. It is not a flaw, it is a necessary design so the quickfire trigger always ends at top. I got used to it very quickly and like them very much.
Answer: It works well. It's my favorite trout reel.
Answer: Honestly just don't get it I bought it and it's HORRIBLE
Q:

Product reviews of Shimano IX 1000R Front Drag Freshwater Spinning Reel
Gustavo L. : Money well spent
Great for light fishing
Mike : As expected
As expected
Gustavo L. : Money well spent
Great for light fishing
C. Voisin : I'm on the fence
I was actually pretty pleased with this reel when I opened the box. It was surprisingly smooth with a responsive drag for being so cheap. Installed it on a 7' light action rod with 8lb fluorocarbon, intending to fish for crappie with small crank baits. Well, on the first hook set, I got a small 1 lb bass and the anti reverse broke. In its defense, I did set the hook with a little authority, and the drag wasn't exactly loose, BUT, this is not my only cheap spinner that I use for light fishing. I have several other brands in the same price point that have been working flawlessly for several years with similar and regular abuse. I honestly dont feel ripped off in the least, because I should have been gentler, but I doubt I'll buy another one. If you get it, just be gentle and mind your drag settings.
Miko : Great fishing reel
I am new at fishing and this is my first reel purchase. When I got to mount it, it did not fit properly as I have a pole from another manufacturer. This reel has a slim base for mounting, and I had to add double sided tape as shims and tied it down with rope along with the locking nut of the pole. Now the reel is nice and tight on the pole. I had two to three tangling issue when I got to use it for fishing, but the fact that you can reverse the reeling made it easier for me to fix the problem. There is a loose tab on the reel close to where the line is being guided to the rim and I have no idea what it is for. It is the reason for my tangling problems and I may have to remove it. Other reels do not have this loose tab. Overall I am satisfied though. My friends got their fishing gears at the blue megastore and they had more problem than I did.
Teacher : Awesome reel
Have used this reel for many years. When I found it on Amazon so inexpensive I bought 2
JK : Five Stars
great little inexpensive reel. Perfect for crappie and panfish.
Amazon Customer : looks and works great
smooth mechanism.....love it
Jimmy : Great
I've had really good luck with these reels. Will buy again when needed.
RWF : Ok for the price
I is ok, but I prefer the 2000 much better. The spool ratchet tightens up better on the 2000 and doesn't do that with the 1000 as well. But in all a decent ultralight reel. I use these reel on my telescopic rods.
Mickey : Nice reel but....
Like the reel. However the ad is misleading. Only one picture shows the reel and the other three are pictures of a rod which leads one to believe a rod is included. Not. Not the first time I’ve been mislead. Guess I should have read a little better.
luvingthepnw : shimano - please keep making quick fire reels!
my old shimano reels are still going strong - just needed some new rigs for the kayak - new ones are perfect!
G. Davis : spinning reel
Great value! Happy with the overall working.
Don : bought it for the rear drag
I use this reel with my ultra light 5'6" shimano rod with p-line co-polymer 4lb test line. Its not as light as others that I have, but it is the one I use the most. I let my young daughter use it when we are both out fishing and she catches trout all the time with it. I love having the rear drag system and wish more reels would use it. It's a nice affordable reel, and has lasted me several years. Biggest trout caught in my area have been hatchery triploids and they ranged between 14-17". Usual lake rainbow trout catches here are around 8-12". Has an extra tab to help with casting that other reels normally don't have. It doesn't have a bunch of ball bearings like other reels advertise, but it performs great either way for the trout I catch with it.
thermoplasticman : great reel for the price
It is a basic spin cast reel that provides reliable service. It's not going to compare to a $200 one, but it doesn't even cost $20, and it reels in fish. It has a relatively smooth drag for the price. The only thing that I don't like is that it may take almost a full revolution to catch. Again, for the price you won't get this kind of quality from anyone but Shimano.
Mike Bean : it is cheap
but I have had other cheap reels that are much better. the trigger unit is very poor and the reel is to tall for one handed grip the take up is very rough and in fact noisy.
drfugawe : Just a Super Well Built Fun Reel
I really like this little, well built baby - you can feel the precision and quality it is built with as you use it - For the money, it's hard to beat.
Michael Blackburn : Best reel on the market!
My dad had one just like this one and been searching for on for a while. So glad I found it and you can not beat the price!
Andrew : This reel is worth way more than it costs
I'm not a serious angler, but this reel is head and shoulders above most of the other reels at this price point. I've never enjoyed the luxury of a $100 plus reel, but I have suffered through a variety of other budget reels. This is smooth, easy to adjust, ambidextrous, well balanced and generally well built for fresh water applications. This reel punches well above its price point. I've bought two now and have been very pleased with the quality of both.
Reader25 : I wished I had smaller increments to better position the line and bubble prior to casting
Worked well, no issues. There are only two increments at which it will lock when you have the reverse spin turned off, I wished I had smaller increments to better position the line and bubble prior to casting.
Max : Good reel, no frills. 15+years of use
Bought my second one of these in 15years,not because the original has any problems, but because I built my Dad a rod and wanted him to have a reliable reel for light fishing that was dependable. My old reel has caught thousands of trout over the years and I've never even relubed it. Drag isn't the smoothest, reeling isn't either...but it works, and keeps on working.
Juan Carlos : but i can say that the material looks good, I have the doubt that if the reel ...
Need to test the reel, but i can say that the material looks good, I have the doubt that if the reel is really for saltwater fishing
JPC : My Go-To Reels for Light Tackle Fishing
Excellent reels for the money. Hold up well in fresh or salt water with minumal maintenance. The bail trigger/line pickup is unique to this series of reels, and greatly reduces hand fatigue while increasing casting speed. I have been fishing with these Shimano reels for nearly 20 years and they are still my go-to favorites for light tackle fishing!!
lowground : Incredible reel for $12.99
Bought first IX1000R last year as a inexpensive reel to try on a 10 foot crappie pole but wound up using on 5.5 foot graphite rod as I like this better than reel it replaced which cost several times more. So this one goes back on the 10’ crappie pole for now. I fish mostly slow retrieve jigs with 6# line on the first one and jig plus live bait on 10 footers. Have only had the first one for a season but have seen no change in performance so far -smoother than it should be for the price. Likely be getting a few more of these for my poles.
Sheri Brown : What happened Shimano?
The drag stopped working correctly on the first fish, it was clicking like it should now it just pulls like with no noise. Reel still works and is worth the money but im dissapointed in shimano for being so cheap. I love their gear and this is my first time being unsatisfied by their product.
The guy who bought this : Awesome ultra light reel
Awesome ultra light reel. I put this on an ultra light pole I got on clearance and have a great perch rig for under $20. I used 6lbs. Sea Guard Red Label fluorocarbon and it casts great. I have plans on buying this reel in a larger models for other poles
Amazon Customer : Good real, good price
I bought this real for a very short (Emmrod) pole. I wish I had gotten the smaller size (and used lighter line), but that was my fault. But is does seem to be physically larger than some other reals I have, that have larger spools. The real works well, no complaints on its operation and functions.
stan webb : Quality product
As far as I'm concerned, Shimano's thousand series reels are some of the best spinning reels ever. Have used 1000, 2000, and 4000 series for years. Smooth and reliable.
Sheri Brown : What happened Shimano?

lucabrasy : Great Quality
Excellent reel. great quality.
J. T. : Good Beginner Reel
Great little real for the price. I like the rear drag because it’s easy to reach. The quick trigger mechanism that puts the line and bail right at your finger tip is slick, but probably unnecessary for most. The only thing I dislike is the low gear ratio. It’s very slow. But for the price, it’s a solid little reel.
Dean : Quality Product.
I wn several of these. A basic fishing reel thatvstands above other brands.
Mickey : Nice reel but....
Like the reel. However the ad is misleading. Only one picture shows the reel and the other three are pictures of a rod which leads one to believe a rod is included. Not. Not the first time I’ve been mislead. Guess I should have read a little better.
Mike : I really like the unique Quikfire casting mechanism
This is a light weight reel that is great for trout fishing. The Quikfire casting feature is perfect for casting lure repeatedly and rapidly.
I have several other Shimano reel like this one and they all last years of use.
Persnickety Client : Works Wonderful.
Nothing beats the smooth shimano feel. I did not have much faith the reel would last but has survived days of catching 4 and 5 lb bass without issue. For the price it is a great product and I highly recommend it to anyone as a replacement or for a new rig. I replaced my w-mart broken reels and have never looked back.

Ron . : Ok reel.
Reverse stop sometime doesn’t work.
DonRicardo : Great reel. Is my to go crappie reel
Can't beat it. It's a great reel and it's not just the price. It performs well. I don't think there is a better feel under the $25 than this one
Russell F. : Good reel for price
Reel functions well. Drag is fairly smooth. More plasticy than I expected, but it feels sturdy, it's good quality fiber reinforced. I fished 4 hours with it so far and no issues.
Power Tool Marine : Can't wait to try it....
If it's anything like my other Shimano gear, I will be very happy. Perfect Ultralight size and the price is unbeatable.
C. monroe : Love this reel
My favorite real, been using it for over twenty years.
Dean : Quality Product.

Bailey Oliver : so far so good....
Fast shipping. So far so good. Haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it seems sturdy and easy to put line on it. Will update once I use it.
Mike Bean : it is cheap
but I have had other cheap reels that are much better. the trigger unit is very poor and the reel is to tall for one handed grip the take up is very rough and in fact noisy.
James A. Barker : Nice reel
Have 3 of these for trout fishing they work great
Ramon Ortloff : works as expected
I needed a reel that works as a small winch, bridge fishing needs a reel that will pull fish from the water up to the bridge, with a 4 to 1 ratio, this reel works well for that
Rick Garlington : Shimano IX 1000R spin reel
Well packed and arrived on time. I am still getting used to the "trigger" lever and the fact that the reel isn't locked up except at top dead center. Not a deal buster, just different. The rear drag is nice, reel is easy to clean and lube. 110 yards of 6LB Trilene XL line and the spool is full, as advertised. Light weight. Very nice on my ultralight spin rod.
drfugawe : Just a Super Well Built Fun Reel
I really like this little, well built baby - you can feel the precision and quality it is built with as you use it - For the money, it's hard to beat.
thermoplasticman : great reel for the price
It is a basic spin cast reel that provides reliable service. It's not going to compare to a $200 one, but it doesn't even cost $20, and it reels in fish. It has a relatively smooth drag for the price. The only thing that I don't like is that it may take almost a full revolution to catch. Again, for the price you won't get this kind of quality from anyone but Shimano.
Michael Blackburn : Best reel on the market!
My dad had one just like this one and been searching for on for a while. So glad I found it and you can not beat the price!
you can compare the product price from Costco, wayfair, bestbuy, lowes, target, homedepot, Walmart, ebay, amazon to find the best price for you
