Questions about Aventik HVCE Graphite Fly Reel Center Drag System Classic III Graphite Large Arbor Sizes 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 Fly Fishing Reels
Q:
What wt line comes on the 3/4 wt combo?
Answer: I did not purchase the combo just the reel
Q:
What line is on the 7/8
Answer: This is an assumption. Based on years of fishing, guiding, and acquiring gear. 7 weight. Two reasons - 7 weight is generally a more “all around” line. Anything from large trout to steelhead. And, typically the lines they spool on these are the first ones in the size ratings. Hope that helps.
Q:
By default which way does this reel retrieve, right or left handed? There was no manual with it when it arrived.
Answer: Left. Just like all reels ever. Honestly I always switched my spinning reels to right and switch hands to retrieve, but with the fly reel I keep em left, just makes more sense.
Answer: It retrieves left hand out of the box. Mine came with a small card with diagrams to change to right hand retrieve.
Answer: I believe you can use this reel either left or right handed. depands on how you load it.
Q:
How does this reel convert for use between hands? There are no instructions provided in the package.
Answer: Push in clip on side opposite from drag adjustment. Remove center spool. Remove small clip on spindle. Remove and reverse drag clicker and place back on spindle. Replace small metal clip. Replace center spool. Reel can now be repositioned for opposite hand use.
Answer: I’m sure it does. Typically there’s a clip around the drag disc that holds it in place. Remove the clip, flip the disc, and that should change the retrieve side. You can also hunt utube videos for this. Someone may have made one because they figured it out and want to help the rest of us.
Q:
What is in the enclosed package to be used for; little colored things - green, blue and grey? Grey looks important. Very poor instructions.
Answer: The gray ones fit on the spool. I use it to mark what line is on the spool. The smaller blue one I think fit of the end of ur fly line. I have loops in all mine so not 100% sure. Hope that helps
Answer: They are plugs to help you identify the line size and whether it's floating or sinking line. The plugs go in the holes in the reel spool. I decided they were to small for my old eyes to read so I threw them away.
Q:
Can you buy just this reel with line and backing
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: It doesn't look like it. I bought one "naked" and spooled my own line and backing. Most reputable tackle/fly shops will spool it for free if you buy your line and backing from them - it's a nice entry-level reel.
Answer: I bought 2 Aventik reels about 1 year ago. I was not aware that my purchase could possibly include fly line + backing. The company did not offer that option to me when I purchased the reels. Maybe they do now, but I am not aware of it. BTW, for the money, these are very good reels and certainly worth the price.
Answer: Type Combo to check
Q:
Combo loaded?
Answer: If you mean is the backing and fly line installed on the reel, I’d be highly dubious that it was. To be transparent I bought just the reel, rather than the combo setup, and no, neither the backing nor the fly line was installed.
Q:
What items are in the "cassette" selection? Does that include a full reel and 2 spare spools as shown in picture?
Answer: Cassette means empty spool most times
Q:
What is Polymeric material ?
Answer: Plastic.
Q:
What weight of line comes on the 3/4 wt combo? Is there any way to request a 4wt line specifically?
Answer: The one I ordered did not come with line
Q:
Where is this made?
Answer: China.
Q:
What wt line comes on the 3/4 and 5/6 wt reel?
Answer: there is no line.
Q:
Can u get a spare spool for these reels
Answer: I am not certain if you can get a spare spool but I love them and I bot multiple reels so I could swap the spools anyway love the product and great price for them so buy extras
Q:
I received a small bag with some green, blue, grey rubber pieces/plugs, what are they for?
Answer: That is a million dollar question. I disassembled mine to change hands and never noticed anything.. I have caught tiny bream and a 5 lb catfish with it and no problems.. they ended up somewhere in my goodie trays never to be seen again..
Answer: They’re for marking each cassette to know what type of line you have on it.
Answer: They are either for building a handle on a fishing rod or simply packaging cushion?
Q:
what taper is the 7 wt line???
Answer: Weight forward taper.
Q:
How do you change to right hand retrieve? I did not get directions
Answer: When you take off the spool, you’ll see a wire clip on the inside, where it holds down what looks like a plastic disc. Carefully remove the wire clip, and flip the disc underneath it 180 degrees, then reinstall it and the clip. That should do it. There are YouTube videos of this process for reels which use a similar set up. Hope that’s helpful, good luck.
Answer: Flip the clutch bearing 180.
Product reviews of Aventik HVCE Graphite Fly Reel Center Drag System Classic III Graphite Large Arbor Sizes 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 Fly Fishing Reels
Jeff Nelson : Surprisingly well made. Easy to switch LH/RH I use these A LOT, so happy with them I own 3.
I've bought 3 of these reels, probably going to buy 2 more. I fly fish most of the year, sometimes 5-6 times a week after work. These reels, for the money, are a steal. I spool up different lines and just leave them on the whole reel instead of more fragile spare spools. These are light, smooth, rugged and inexpensive. Obviously they are not master works of art that some snobby fly fishers love to swing in your face (like a rollex) but I fly fish because of love, not to impress anyone. I buy the 7/8 wt and use them on 3wt to 10wt rods.
Speaking of awesome deals, treat yourself to a Fenwick AETOS 3wt 10" rod. $189 and kidding aside, worth much, much more, honestly just a phenomenal rod. It rides in my truck and has caught hundreds of fish without a hiccup. I fish, a lot, I don't care if my set ups impress anyone but me, and I want other people to get equipment that won't imprison them in debt but works just as well as the stuff that would.
LouD : Fly Fishing Reel
Good solid product for the money.
DownwindSalmon : Great reel for the money!!
Love the lower cost & the option to get spare spools. Super easy to change spools. Need to pick up a couple more for different line size now. I did pick up a 2nd reel. Love these!!
SJ : Plastic broke & non-existent drag.
I guess I should have expected something like this with a plastic reel. It broke where it attaches to the reel seat. One use and done! Maybe they should start sending a roll of duct tape when you buy this reel. Also the drag system does not work. It’s the same wether you back the drag screw all the way off or crank it down as hard as you want. Absolutely no difference, it just free spools out with a click. There is no “value for money” when it won’t function at all. Just a waste.
Eric : A decent, low cost option that works
Like many others, I'm operating on budget and was looking for a reel that was a decent, low cost option that works for my purposes and I think I've found it in the 3/4 wt Aventik reel. I've been fly fishing for years now and a sensible rule is that unless you are planning to take on fish that have a good chance of actually getting into your backing and testing your drag, the reel is there to hold and manage your fly line. I've matched this Aventik with a very nice 4 wt rod and loaded it with some higher end fly line and now it almost makes me think I've finally learned how to cast! Yes, it's a so called "plastic" reel but it doesn't feel like it. It feels solid and operates very smoothly while looking nice enough. The spool is easy to remove and has a deep "v" that holds plenty of backing and I agree with others that at this price, don't worry about extra spools, just get another reel. If there is a downside it's that the knob to adjust the drag is BIG and makes this reel a bit thick (3 of 5 stars). Overall, if is necessary for you to be more "strategic" with your fly fishing $$$, give the Aventik Z a try and put the savings into a good rod and/or quality fly line and you'll be good to go!

Cant beat it for the money. Well worth it
ANDREY : А

Gintas : Not good at all
First time used.after fish hook up broke with in seconds.i would not buy this again.
HerbC : Better than Expected
This reel has a good, solid, quality feel - nothing loose or ill-fitting. It reels in smoothly, and the drag is easy to adjust and holds well. It looks really nice, too. Spent the day fishing with it and was very pleased. For the price, I don't think this can be beat - so I bought a second one (in another size). I'm not an everyday fisherman, but I fish frequently enough to believe this will be an excellent purchase.
Dkahl : Smoooothnesssss
Cant beat it for the money. Well worth it
Jackie Young : Works Great
Good quality!
JeepsterCommando : Excellent value-
Great little fly reel for the money- wider body with a “V” groove concave arbor holds more line than other 3/4s with a large arbor.
Ricky Owens : Love it
Well built reel
Gabe : Good for the money!
Good for the money! Guy at the fishing store that I had it lined at was surprised at the price! Thought it would be more.
Awp : Very nice, very inexpensive
Just received this reel set. Have not used it/fished with it yet. Surprisingly well built and solid feel. Drag seems smooth and strong. Only concern I have is the plastic reel seat…time will tell if it will break. That said, $32 for a 5/6 reel, two extra spools, and a very nice bag for everything…worth a try!
Also…bought the 7/8 combo with the chest pack…same comments on well-made reel but it also came with backing, a decent 7wt WF line, a 3x leader, nippers, and a great chest pack. It isn’t a Fishpond, but the whole combination was a bargain! The pack is very nice and has a flip-down slotted foam fly pocket in front.
Again…my only concern is the plastic reel seat. If it doesn’t break, this is the best deal out there. If it breaks…I’m not out much and still have the rest of the stuff!
Kindle Customer : Nice reel
Nice reel
Mark Flo : Nice reel
I was recently given the Aventik Z Fly Reel Center Drag System Classic III to review. After an easy switch to right hand retrieve I install the backing and fly Line. I have been using the reel in the salt water fish in Long beach and have been very happy with its performance. Smooth drag and drag setting. I always wash my reel after use in salt water.
Therris9 : Works great
I’m no expert, but this reel works perfectly. I do not understand why one would want to pay more for something that just winds up fly line
Bryce Job : Perfect Panfish Reel
Perfect priced reel for all of my 2-4 wt panfish rods.

Hugh Strawn : Excellent reel.....
An EXCELLENT reel for the price.
John U. : Nice reel for the money
Recently recievced the reel but haven't had a chance to use it fly fishing reel
Amazon Customer : Nice reel for cost - bought for Salt Water
I fish Salt water infrequently. This reel held up to a week of surf fishing with no sign of corrosion - Rinsed in fresh water after every use.
Therris9 : Works great
I’m no expert, but this reel works perfectly. I do not understand why one would want to pay more for something that just winds up fly line
Glenn : Great value
Price is great. The bag is smaller than I thought it would be but is a good size. 4 stars only because i wish i could buy a spare spool.
carole d. : Satisfied with purchase
Light weight, smooth action, good value. I think it will work great whenI get to use it.
Ethan Haws : Absolute Garbage
Broke within the first minute of holding the thing. No line even on it. Tried to switch the retrieve and THE ENTIRE DRAG SYSTEM POPPED OUT. Not provoked even in the slightest bit and all of the reel's guts spilled out. This thing is made out of the cheapest feeling plastic you can imagine and isn't worth a dime. Stay away from this reel and get something made out of ANYTHING higher quality. Just put these 20-some-odd dollars towards something worth your investment.
Shane Boer : It's a nice
It's a billion times better than anything in the pre 90s
Daniel J. Richter : Great reel. Can't believe what I paid.
Sturdy caught 150lbs. Of red salmon with it.
Amazon Customer : Can’t change the retrieve
Can’t change the retrieve
Tyler Knight : Cheap quality, average cast , decent value.
So you actually get the reel with cassette and two bonus cassettes if you buy the cassette option. Not bad value for money . However this reel cannot cast very far , if you’re looking to only cast your line short distances it can get the job done, I also like being able to quickly take off cassette and add a different one , but overall the cast is slow average and the material is cheap plastic, not aluminum.
LouD : Fly Fishing Reel
Good solid product for the money.
Mark Osburn : Great value
This is a good reel for the money
ilene pyles : This reel has a bearing rather than the bushing design in all other fly reels I have owned.
due to the bearing, it is far smoother than any other, and the drag system has a much better range from no drag to very significant if you need it. It is all one piece design besides the spool meaning there are no screws to back out and lose...... for the price it is an incredible value, in my opinion.

Pete in NY : excellent reel, great price
I have not used this reel yet so I can't attest 100 percent to its performance. But this is a very solid, well made reel at an incredibly low price. You can see it in the details and workmanship, The tolerances are as good and often better as you'll find on most low ($50) to mid-price ($150) reels. I bought the 5/6 for swinging trout flies It easily too 75 yards of backing, 80 feet of mono shooting line, and a skagit #4 shooting head .... I'm pumped!
Andrew Consoli : Read before you purchase any reels
I have been fly fishing for about 10 years and let me tell you straight up you do not need to spend a ton of money for nice equipment. This reel is great . It is well built .. very solid .. and works fantastic !
Snowbound : What's not to like?
I originally purchased one of these as a "friends and family" reel for when I'm taking novices flyfishing - just ordered another one for me. Lightweight, decent drag, tough plastic construction (I hate people dinging up my machined aluminum reels) and for 10"-22" trout, what more do you need?
I have a lot of reels as it's much less complicated to change reels than to change spoils - even assuming everything matches.
All in all, a heck of a bargain for $18!
Jeff C : High quality at low prices.
I have been following Aventik products for a long time now. With having well over 50 years experience in fly fishing I was not sure of the quality of the reel compared with it's very low cost of $16.99 , however, I'm really getting tired of paying for over priced so called quality products. I must say I'm very HAPPY with it's light weight, large arbor, smooth disc drag and overall construction. Highly recommended for beginners and experienced fly fisherman/woman. I will be buying the 3/4 and use their WF5F fly line as I like using small reels.
The reel is outfitted with Aventik 30lb backing $7.00, WF5F $8.99 and my personal Loop to Loop connection. Very happy with the quality and performance of Aventik products.
David S. : High quality fly rod reel at an affordable price.
Absolutely love the drag on this reel. I use it to catch bass, bluegills and myan chiclids here in South Florida lakes and canals. A high-quality reel at a very affordable price. Even if you have an expensive fly reel, it would make good sense to buy one of these as a back up if I was traveling.
SJ : Plastic broke & non-existent drag.
