Choose The Correct Spinning Reel Size For Your Bait Fishing
| | | |
Where Trout And Panfish Rule: ABF-20b Avenger Baitfeeder spinning reels begin at size 20, perfect for baiting trout and panfish on small ponds, lakes and reservoirs. Cast floating trout baits on slip sinkers, fish live minnows under floats for aggressive crappie, this reel is perfect for 4- to 8-pound test line. | General Freshwater: ABF-30b and ABF-40b Walleye, catfish and bass match well to size 30 and 40 Avenger Baitfeeders. If 8-to-12-pound line is correct for the fishery, these are the proper size reels. The size 40 also crosses over to light inshore applications in saltwater fishing. | When Big Baits Equal Big Fish: ABF-55b and ABF-65b Large live baits and large predatory fish like pike, musky, striped bass and trophy catfish can require a lot of line capacity on spinning reels. The Avenger Baitfeeder spinning reel in sizes 55 and 65 hold plenty of line for trophy freshwater fish and most saltwater species. | Fishing The Open Ocean- ABF-65b and ABF-80b You can't be quite sure what will eat your bait in the ocean. It could be a small dolphin fish, it could be a sailfish. In either case, size 65 and 80 Okuma Baitfeeders are the largest spinning reels in the family, ready for fast-moving fish that sprint towards the horizon. |
Okuma Baitfeeder Technology
Let 'Em Eat
When fishing live baits, chunk baits, worms, insects or dough baits, the best fishing success often comes from allowing fish to secure a solid hold of the bait without feeling the resistance of the fishing rod and gear. This is difficult to accomplish with traditional spinning reels. Okuma Baitfeeding Technology is the ultimate bait fishing solution. Featuring a secondary drag system in the rear of the reel, the Baitfeeder switch completely disengages the primary drag system. With the bail of the reel closed and the line remaining well under control, the Baitfeeder switch allows line to pay out under an adjustable amount of tension. Once the fish has had time to completely eat a bait, a turn of the reel handle disengages the baitfeeder system, re-engages the primary drag system and the fish can be hooked and landed with total control.
Okuma Fishing Tackle, Inspired Fishing
At Okuma Fishing Tackle we deliver more than just fishing gear. We deliver the motivation to hit the water, the energy to maintain focus and the excitement that injects every cast with high expectations. The advanced materials, dynamic design and commitment to longevity contained in each of our fishing reels, fishing rods and rod and reel combos are not simply a means to an end. They're the foundation of a better and more complete fishing experience. Okuma Fishing Tackle is developed inspire your passion for fishing, both on and off the water. Whether you fish for bass, trout, catfish, salmon/steelhead, stripers, tuna or marlin, when the sun rises tomorrow, a new opportunity will be born. Let's make the most of it together.
Benefits of Baitfeeder Technology
- Includes a secondary drag system for bait fishing
- Allows fish to eat baits without feeling resistance
- Maintains exceptional line control in all bait fishing appllications
- Disengages with a turn of the reel handle to re-engage the primary drag system
- Suitable for all fish species from ultra-light trout and panfish to walleyes, catfish, stripers and saltwater species.
product description
Bait feeding spinning reels lend tremendous function to anglers. And this is not just in saltwater fisheries where bait feeding spinning reels allow live baits to swim uninhibited. Use of bait feeders is expanding dramatically in freshwater applications also, in fisheries like trout and catfish, where it’s to the angler’s advantage to ensure fish have a solid hold of baits before setting the hook. The venerable Okuma Avenger ABF spinning reels have undergone numerous upgrades to form and function in this refined and advanced selection. Okuma's bait feeding system allows anglers to disengage their spinning reel spool and allow their bait to run freely. The bait feeding system incorporates a secondary micro-adjustable drag system at the rear of the reel that allows for precise adjustment of the spool for bait control. In order to disengage this system simply turn the handle. The On/Off lever on the rear of the reel will automatically disengage the bait feeding system so you can fight your fish with the main drag system.

Questions about Okuma Avenger Baitfeeder ABF-40b Graphite Spinning Reel- ABF-40b
Q:
is the 65b a good catfish reel
Answer: Yes it is I have a 65 in the ABF and in that series the drag is the same in the 65 as the 90 @ 22lb. For me at least i think the big concern comes in matching it size to the rod paying attention to the angle to first guide on the pole. I have been using my Okuma ABF 65 for going on 10 years and while i dont fish as often as i would like i have upgraded the pole i use with this reel three times. If this model is as good it can be used for trophy fish.
Answer: Sure would be. I prefer to use casting reels for catfish, the 65 would be a good size to use for a spinning reel.
Answer: I think it would be if you are catching big catfish. Really big.
Answer: We have caught mahi, wahoo, amberjack, and 50" plus barracuda plus on a 65. If you're in the hunt for a state record, it's a solid choice. If you're catching 10-20 pound cats, you could downsize and easily handle them.
Answer: With a med. action 6'6" rod it word great!
Q:
Line capacity
Answer: First, these reels have been very good. We have the 30, 40 and the 55. We do mostly back bay fishing with braided line so we load about 50 yards of mono first then the rest of the spool is 15 to 20 lb. braided line. Approximately 150 yards which is plenty for the type of saltwater fishing we do. The spool handles it easily. Good luck fishing.
Answer: varies with mono or braided - line test# and or dia.
Q:
Is it possible to switch out the giant knob grip for something a little less obese?
Answer: The knob is riveted on and cannot be changed. You would need to change the complete handle assembly.
Answer: Sorry, I have one model smaller which had a regular knob. I suspect you could use the smaller size handle on the 40 if you wanted to but you would probably have to pay for it. I like the reel very much.
Answer: Not that i know of but i haven't looked. Ive gotten used to it. The older version has the smaller handle though so maybe you find those.
Q:
Trae bobina adicional?
Answer: no
Answer: No viene con bobina adicional.
Q:
the one i just got seems to have a sharp edge around the top rim of the spool. is that normal or did this spool miss a polishing step?
Answer: There shouldn't be a sharp edge. I would suggest sending it back to the retailer for an exchange.
Answer: It's not normal
Answer: the one i just got don't have any sharp around the top rim of the spool, if your have it, is some anomalous because it can break the line
Answer: not normal,should be smooth
Answer: I have a few of the size 30's and they are all smooth.
Answer: your welcome, i hope It has been useful
Q:
Would the abf-40 or 40b be appropriate for salmon fishing?
Answer: That depends on the rod type and length you use, type of line and your skill level. The manufacturer recommends the 55b or 65b for large freshwater fish, which would probably include salmon. So if you're an experienced salmon fisherman, using a noodle rod and high-quality line, you could probably use the 40b. Otherwise, you might want to use the more hefty reels.
Answer: The 40 size would be ideal for salmon fishing. If you are using thicker mono, i would suggest going up to a 55 for more line capacity.
Answer: I think Okuma reels are OK. I own 2 and have not had problems with them on ocean fish. But I would avoid their rods as I have had problems with them and Okuma's customer service and warranty are horrible.
Answer: I have caught a 29" lingcod on #10 lb test, and halibut up to 25.7lb on #10 lb test. And a 76 lb sturgeon on 40lb.
Answer: yes,i have caught 25 lb rockfish on mine and held up well, for the money these reels cant be beat
Q:
A good rod to pair it with this reel?
Answer: I use it on a med. action 6`6" fiberglass rod (ugly stick) made for 8-12 lb. test line, for bait fishing for smallmouth bass.
Answer: depends on what u r comfortable with [action and length wise]
Answer: Shakespeare Ugly Stix 6'6" or 7' medium action.
Q:
is the handle reversable?
Answer: yes
Q:
what is the line capacity on this abf-40b?? I didn't see it listed anywhere. Thanks!
Answer: The ABF-40b holds YDS/ LBS - 325/8 , 230/10 , 205/12
Answer: Blow up the picture it shows line capacity
Answer: I just fill the reel to full capacity, I never pay any attention to footage. I can tell you this they are an EXCELLANT reel, I have several in different sizes, love them.
Answer: 205 yards of 12 lb. test mono. I put 300 yards of 10 lb. test Power Pro.
Answer: I have about 220 yards of 30lb braided on each of mine.
Answer: 8lb-325yds
Answer: 205yrd of 12lb mono
Q:
the one i just got seems to have a sharp edge around the top rim of the spool. is that normal or did this spool miss a polishing step?

Answer: not normal,should be smooth
Answer: I have a few of the size 30's and they are all smooth.
Answer: your welcome, i hope It has been useful
Q:
What is the difference between this reel and the Ceymar?
Answer: They are built off the same platform. The main difference other than cosmetics is the bearing count and the line roller.
Answer: Mainly price. The avenger has 7 ball-bearing and is an excellent reel for price. I have never used the ceymar. I have used the trio and found then to be about the same.
Answer: This one has a baitfeeder option that is an adjustable 2nd drag that comes in vere handy...I have looked at the ceymars but never purchased because they didn't
Q:

Q:
Is this reel a baitfeeder, We currently ordered this reel and the one that came was not the one that was pictured?
Answer: The reel shown is a baitfeeder reel. The Avenger baitfeeder models start with ABF.... The standard Avenger spinning reel would be the AV-40B
Answer: It sure looks like mine. I have an ABF 80. When you engage the ABF the reel spins freely and when struck just pull on it and Wham!!! What is different about the one you got?
Q:
Would this reel be appropriate for a 12 ft surf rod?
Answer: The ABF-40b would be a bit small for a 12 ft. surf rod unless you are using light braid. You will want more line capacity to increase your casting distance and your chances of landing a big fish. I would suggest at least a 65 size reel.
Answer: I whink the 80 would be best
Answer: Maybe the next series up
Q:
Wonder which reel i should go with? is the 55 about the right size for catfishing? generally catch 10-20s but occasionally we find some 25ish.
Answer: I have a abf-40b with 50 lbs spiderwire catching 30-48lbs stripers... my reel works pretty good for me...
Answer: I have a abf-40b with 50 lbs spiderwire catching 30-48lbs stripers... my reel works pretty good for me...
Answer: The 55 will definitely handle a25 plus cat. It's a really strong reel. I would advise a smaller size if you use it for other species .Makes it more fun.
Answer: 65 is massive wish I went with the 55 and I'm chasing striper on the same range
Q:
Guys do you have problems with a rear drag system? Like a broken lever or the system not being disengaged and shift to the front drag automatically?
Answer: could just be a fluke, I own several of these up to the 90, lots of use on my 60 and 80, live bait and pitching plugs here in New England and have never had a problem. Okuma is a good company give them a call.
Answer: I have three of these and used them for Striper's for two seasons and they have worked very well.
Q:
How is it that for 1 reel it’s $54.00 and for the two pack it’s $224.00?
Answer: I have no idea I would think that is a mistake!
Q:
Is the 40b good for walleye dead sticking with 12 pound fire line?
Answer: The 40B is a good size but with 12 lb fire line, you will get more line capacity than needed. You can probably go to a 20 or 30 size and still have plenty of capacity with braided line that thin.
Answer: I am a saltwater fisherman, so I don't catch walleye. I have caught Snook and Redfish up to 10 pounds. I even caught a Bonnethead Shark that was 36" long.
Answer: I would stick with the 30b. Thats more than enough. Great reels
Answer: Yea it should do the trick
Answer: Yes I really enjoy mine they have been working flawlessly
Q:
What is the foot material of the reel? metal or plastic?
Answer: the reel foot is made of graphite as is the rest of the reel body .
Answer: metal. great reel.
Answer: It is metal.
Q:
Hiya, does the 40-b have the hydro-block sealed drag?? The old version did on the metal spools but the graphite spools didn't.. Thx!!
Answer: The aluminum spools have a rubber seal on the drag stack.
Answer: Yes, it has the hydro-block sealed drag.
Q:
I looking for 6000 size. Do you have?
Answer: A Diawa BG 4000 is a better choice for in shore fishing ????
Q:
can you spool 40 braid on this?
Answer: you can use 30-50lb braid on this reel. The heavier the braid the less line capacity you will have.
Answer: If u mean 40lb braided line yes. I spooled 50lb braided dia. equivalent to 12lb mono
Answer: Yes. However I would caution that the bait runner is not durable on this reel
Answer: Yes...just need a bit of mono backing...
Q:
What size is comparable to a 4000 in other reels. Thanks
Answer: The 40b or 55b.
Answer: 20 = 2000, 30 = 3000, etc.... So, 40.
Q:
Need parts for my reel
Answer: Check with a good tackle shop that does reel repairs.
Answer: You would need to contact Okuma
Q:
Is there a "lock and unlock" switch for the anti-reverse? thanks
Answer: Josh, There is a lock and unlock control right below and in front of the spool.
Answer: Yes there is. I love this reel for use with my down riggers.
Q:
Does anyone know the max drag lbs on the ABF40?
Answer: 13lbs max drag.
Answer: Sorry that's a ruff question to answer. If you are concerned about the drag just get a bigger and better reel..hope this helps
Product reviews of Okuma Avenger Baitfeeder ABF-40b Graphite Spinning Reel- ABF-40b
Hilly : Cheap on the inside.
The washers in the base of the crank are plastic and they broke by shearing the first time I caught a fish over 5 pounds. For the same price you can buy a sturdier reel.

Genx lancer : If you have the money buy it
Pros: Great reel for the price I've had it for about a month and it has caught tons of big carp. The baitrunner feature is loud and easy to engage. The reel is super smooth
Cons: does not come with an extra spool and handle is feels big at first but you get used to it
Joel R. : Great bait reel for the money!
I wanted a budget reel that I could use for fishing bait, occasionally. I had the original shimano bait runner as a kid so I knew how helpful a bait feeder system can be.
This reel is so impressive at this price point and does exactly what it's advertised to do. I've hooker and caught several 10-20lb fish on 4000 model. As you can see in the photo, I am fishing mangroves so I need to stop these fish. This reel delivers on doing that when paired with a medium action rod.
The Avenger does everything well, but nothing great. It's not the smoothest reel you'll pick up, but more than sufficient. You could probably throw artificials with it if you needed to do so. Although obviously that isn't a what this reel is made to do.
If you're looking for an affordable bait reel, you can't go wrong here. I don't bait fish too much, but when I do I have a competent and dependable setup that is more than capable of handling anything I've hooked.

Just a good all around reel throw some lures with it and fished for catfish with it good reel
Big Al from Florida. : Avengers are the best Okuma reel for the money.
I use these reels for fishing off bridges for Sheepshead and Mangrove Snappers. This way you set the ABF and not worry about losing the rods over the bridge.
Cheap shopper : which is spooled with approximately 200-225 yards of quality 30LB mono like (P-Line brand)
Ordered the largest model (8000) I believe, it works incredibly well for fishing, mainly use it for saltwater fishing on the S.F. Bay and Delta. I caught nearly a four-foot leopard shark with this reel, which is spooled with approximately 200-225 yards of quality 30LB mono like (P-Line brand).
PROS: seems robust, smooth action, effortless casting and has the bait runner feature. Retrieves line nicely, spools easily, the 8000 model (the big dog) has huge line capacity. The reel its self looks really nice and has a good balanced feel on my rod (details below). Pricing is really good, especially given the features and robust construction (nearly all metal, no plastic junk)
CONS: The first one I purchased was defective; when adjusting the bait runner knob, it virtually fell apart. Upon receipt of second reel, the bait runner feature was difficult to adjust (tension setting). I wish the adjustment had a better audible 'click' for these adjustments. The drag setting was similar as well, however after a few casts, I figured out the adjustments and tolerances. For heavier mono (30lb+) it could cast a little better, I am going to replace with 20lb diameter / 60b test 'power pro' line soon.
SETUP: I have the reel mounted on my largest saltwater rod; a ten foot Shakespeare "Ugly stik" rated for 25-50lb test, spooled with P-line mono 30LB test. This combo feels well balanced, was able to easily manage landing nearly a 4 foot shark (second fish I ever caught with this equipment combo). Overall, aside from the difficulty in determining how-to adjust the various settings, it is a killer reel and I like it.
Rivermano : You won’t be disappointed
Working great!
Xana : Good
Good
Lonnie M. : A great reel
A great reel. I will order more for sure.
Patrick Paez : Great reel, four years in still going strong
I have the ABF 30B series and have been using it for a little over four years. This no issues to report, basic maintenance and care are enough to insure longevity of this reel. I did NOTreceive this product at a discounted rate for this review.
