Choose The Correct Spinning Reel Size For Your Bait Fishing
| | | |
Where Trout And Panfish Rule: ABF-20b Avenger Baitfeeder spinning reels begin at size 20, perfect for baiting trout and panfish on small ponds, lakes and reservoirs. Cast floating trout baits on slip sinkers, fish live minnows under floats for aggressive crappie, this reel is perfect for 4- to 8-pound test line. | General Freshwater: ABF-30b and ABF-40b Walleye, catfish and bass match well to size 30 and 40 Avenger Baitfeeders. If 8-to-12-pound line is correct for the fishery, these are the proper size reels. The size 40 also crosses over to light inshore applications in saltwater fishing. | When Big Baits Equal Big Fish: ABF-55b and ABF-65b Large live baits and large predatory fish like pike, musky, striped bass and trophy catfish can require a lot of line capacity on spinning reels. The Avenger Baitfeeder spinning reel in sizes 55 and 65 hold plenty of line for trophy freshwater fish and most saltwater species. | Fishing The Open Ocean- ABF-65b and ABF-80b You can't be quite sure what will eat your bait in the ocean. It could be a small dolphin fish, it could be a sailfish. In either case, size 65 and 80 Okuma Baitfeeders are the largest spinning reels in the family, ready for fast-moving fish that sprint towards the horizon. |
Okuma Baitfeeder Technology
Let 'Em Eat
When fishing live baits, chunk baits, worms, insects or dough baits, the best fishing success often comes from allowing fish to secure a solid hold of the bait without feeling the resistance of the fishing rod and gear. This is difficult to accomplish with traditional spinning reels. Okuma Baitfeeding Technology is the ultimate bait fishing solution. Featuring a secondary drag system in the rear of the reel, the Baitfeeder switch completely disengages the primary drag system. With the bail of the reel closed and the line remaining well under control, the Baitfeeder switch allows line to pay out under an adjustable amount of tension. Once the fish has had time to completely eat a bait, a turn of the reel handle disengages the baitfeeder system, re-engages the primary drag system and the fish can be hooked and landed with total control.
Okuma Fishing Tackle, Inspired Fishing
At Okuma Fishing Tackle we deliver more than just fishing gear. We deliver the motivation to hit the water, the energy to maintain focus and the excitement that injects every cast with high expectations. The advanced materials, dynamic design and commitment to longevity contained in each of our fishing reels, fishing rods and rod and reel combos are not simply a means to an end. They're the foundation of a better and more complete fishing experience. Okuma Fishing Tackle is developed inspire your passion for fishing, both on and off the water. Whether you fish for bass, trout, catfish, salmon/steelhead, stripers, tuna or marlin, when the sun rises tomorrow, a new opportunity will be born. Let's make the most of it together.
Benefits of Baitfeeder Technology
- Includes a secondary drag system for bait fishing
- Allows fish to eat baits without feeling resistance
- Maintains exceptional line control in all bait fishing appllications
- Disengages with a turn of the reel handle to re-engage the primary drag system
- Suitable for all fish species from ultra-light trout and panfish to walleyes, catfish, stripers and saltwater species.
product description
For us at Okuma Fishing Tackle, fishing is a life-long adventure. Collectively, of us fish as often, catch as many, or are as consistently successful as we would like, and thankfully so. Fishing is not a destination; it's an endless pursuit that begins long before we ever get to the water. The anticipation of the next opportunity is as valuable as the time spent on the water. At Okuma, we craft the tools for the journey. From entry-level through expert, every rod and reel is constructed not only to execute, but also to excite, energize and exhilarate. From feeling the tap, tap, tap of a drift rig searching its way along the bottom of a steelhead stream, to turning a lifeless lead jig into a fleeing bait-fish in the salt, every cast, crank, bobber down and hookup are the rich details of the journey.

Q:
My son is buying a 7ft salt water rod any recomondions for reel size he should use?
Answer: I think Okuma give you the best bang for your buck. The Okuma Azores Z-90s or Z-80s would be a good choice for a 7" rod. Depends on how much line capacity you want. If your going to use it on salt water, buy a salt water rated reel.
Answer: The ABF-55 or ABF-65 would be a great match for a 7' saltwater rod with a Medium to Heavy action.

Q:
The heading says abf 55 but the picture shows the abf 40 so which one is it ?
Answer: The picture is just for reference. It should be an ABF-55 as the listing states.
Q:
is this china made?
Answer: Nope. Great reel, and great investment
Answer: I believe it is, yes. Still a great reel though.
Answer: Yes. What isn't?
Q:
Do these reels have an audible bait clicker?
Answer: Yes, There an audible bait clicker when the baitfeeder is on.
Answer: I was a little disappointed in the volume of the clicker but the performance of the reel makes up for it
Answer: Yes. When the live bait switch is engaged and a fish takes the bait it will click as the line goes out.
Q:
Does anyone know the real line capacity for the 40b? what is on the actual package? it may differ from the okuma web site specs.
Answer: I always use less than it says so that it won't spin off the top of the reel, but it will hold what the website says. It's a smooth and strong reel. I own two of them. I use braid with about two feet of mono leader. Hope this helps.
Q:
What’s the full line capacity? like 20 and 30lb braid. is this reel smaller or bigger than a penn battle 2 5000
Answer: The ABF-55b will hold over 375 of 30 lb braid. The 55b is a little bigger and has more line capacity than the Battle 5000

Answer: I have mine on 7'6'' Catch the Fever medium action rods. I don't know about surf fishing, we don't have much surf in Missouri.
Q:
Is this a ABF 500? 1000? 4000? 6000? 8000?
Answer: The listing shows the reel is an ABF-55b . The New generation has the new numbering which is 500 , 1000 , 4000 etc....
Answer: it is a 55 which is bigger than a 5000 but smaller than a 6000 hope this helps
Answer: Abf55
Q:
Would this work with 20lb mono or flouro?
Answer: It will work with 20lb mono but you will get less line capacity and your casting distance will be affected. I would suggest the 65B for 20lb mono line or stronger.
Answer: i have mine loaded with 35lb Braid. if it holds that, i can tell you that it handles that very well, you should be able to use 20lb
Answer: Yes. I use 20lb big game on mine. Perfect for this reel
Answer: Mono or braid.
Q:
Is this the ABF 500 model?
Answer: The ABF-500 is from the newest generation of the AVenger baitfeeder reels. The model listed is much bigger than the ABF-500 model. The ABF-500 model is an ultra light reel usually used for trout , bluegrill and sunfish.
Answer: yes it is, i own 2

Will the 55b handle 50+ lb flathead?
Answer: Yes. As long as the drag is set right, you should have no issues.
Answer: Yes you'll be fine, but if you want to be on the safe side get one size larger.
Answer: Yes
Product reviews of OKUMA FISHING TACKLE ABF55b Avenger ABF B Series Baitfeeder Reels, Multicolor, One Size

Joseph E Heckert : great reel
Great reel. I use this reel for catfishing and the baitfeeder switch is the best. I also have the ABF65B on another rod. Highly recommended both.

Patricia A Beardsley : Four Stars

My go to fishing reel for catching big flat heads????
Christopher E. Azevedo : Great value
Hands down bestvtrld fo the money. Great quality. Sealed bearings, strong drag, own 7 of these in various sizes.
Michelle L Kottmann : Bait clicker !
Great reel love the bait clicking feature! The Handel is really nice as well!
Christopher E. Azevedo : Great value
Hands down bestvtrld fo the money. Great quality. Sealed bearings, strong drag, own 7 of these in various sizes.
Amazon Customer : Millionare grade reel at everyman's price
This reel is smoother than silk on the water. I spooled it with 17lb Viscious flurocarbon line and on my first time out with it caught 25 channel cats. The baitrunner made it easier to tell that I was getting a serious strike. I coupled this reel with a Rippin Lips medium heavy action rod. If you are looking for a new reel, don't spend $40 on cheap Wal-Mart, Academy, or big box store blue light specials, spend the extra 20 bucks on this reel. You won't regret it.
Mike M. : Good buy
Great really for the money. Super smooth.
Ben : This reel is smooth, best spinning reel I've used
Took it out for the first time and caught a 15lbs stripe bass. The baitfeeder function works perfectly. I couldn't believe how smooth this reel is, it didn't have any problems pulling in the striper even with long drags it handled it with ease. I like the quality of this reel so much that I bought another for my SST rod.
T. Scott Wellman : Great Reel
I bought this reel to take on a surf fishing trip to Hatteras. I put the reel on a 12' Okuma surf road and loaded it with PowerPro 30 lb. The reel was smooth and had no issues with several slot reds, 5lb blue, large skate, and other fish. I liked it so much I've picked up another one for my next trip.
Bryant : Great reel.
My husband loves it.
meband2000 : Great Reels
These are great spinning reels even at twice the price. I have these mounted up on 8' medium action Ugly Stik Big Water rods spooled with Stren 15 Lb. test catfish mono. I use them for channel catfishing on the MDC ponds around Missouri. They have met my expections and exceeded them. The drags are smooth and perform well. I would definitely recommend these looking for a great medium priced reel. I took one star away because this reel does not have a clicker when in the bait feeder mode. The older models of this reel does have the clicker.
Patricia A Beardsley : Four Stars
great gift
Anthony Holland : Will Continue to Buy These Reels
I have owned Okuma Avenger reels for many years and put them to good use.

Good reel seems sturdy enough. In this size category this reel is a good value.
Amazon Customer : You cannot beat an Okuma reel.
I have owned an Okuma reel before and that was the best reel I have ever had. I am sure that this reel will live up to the same standard.
Sergiu : Great reel for the price! Outstanding quality!
Great budget reel! Caught a few fish over 20lbs and did great with this reel! Nice and smooth drag! I will eventually but one more!

This inshore reel exceeded my expectations. It was extremely smooth in both casting and retrieving. Would definitely purchase again. amazon as always was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
christopher laut : wow
All i have to say is i will be buying more" OKUMA" reels from now on way better then shitmano
Amazon Customer : Junk... after catching just one 8lb carp ...
Junk... after catching just one 8lb carp the baitrunner feature stopped working and almost pulled my rod into the water. Now when flip the switch it does nothing, I guess you could still use it as a normal spinning reel but it's much heavier than my other reels and i definitely wouldn't trust the reliability of this reel
Rich Stine : A little bigger than I thought.
Smooth
Dim : Seems durable and quality
Very fast delivery, just three days. Tomorrow will test for fish finder rig
Arnold Davis : Gift
It was a gift
Tilbillygirl : Good feel.
Hubby, here. I like the reel. The features all work as intended. Including the bait feeder switch, which I has its own excellent drag control. Aluminum spool, great line capacity. And classy looking, to go with my salmon spinning rod.
Rick C. Annis : Nice and affordable reel
Great reel for live bait or shore fishing when you’re not close to it. No more sharks dragging my rods into the ocean anymore
Ernestine Horgan : okuma reel
excellent
Mike M. : Good buy
Great really for the money. Super smooth.
T. Scott Wellman : Great Reel

Not quite as sturdy as expected but works great would have wished I got the larger more durable one but ok product not as good as the last model tho
Jane Couchman : Five Stars
quality product just like my other okuma tackle
adam : Nice
Bought 2 of these, one for stripers in mass and a 30 for salmon in NH both rock solid.
3cells : can't be beat for the price!
I'm a Florida saltwater fishomaniac, I'm out on the water at least once or twice a week, in all kinds of weather, for multiple species, Redfish, seatrout, black drum, pompano, bluefish, sheephead, spanish mackerel, snook, cobia, jack crevalle, snapper, Etc.With occasional dances with shark & tarpon. I've had a couple of these for nearly 5 years, and recently got 2 more for guests. Nice smooth action, great bait feeder function, I do wish the ratchet function was a lot louder for wave & surf use. You should get multi packs of line bearings, (uxcell SMR85ZZ Stainless Steel Ball Bearing 5x8x2.5mm Shielded MR85ZZ Bearings 5pcs ) as salt water kills them if you don't keep them lubed. But over all, a surprisingly well made and versatile reel for a great price. The bigger sizes are beefier if you want to throw down with monsters regularly, and you'll get lot's of miles out of these if you clean, strip down and re-lube every season or after immersion in salt water. Tight lines!!
Tilbillygirl : Good feel.
Hubby, here. I like the reel. The features all work as intended. Including the bait feeder switch, which I has its own excellent drag control. Aluminum spool, great line capacity. And classy looking, to go with my salmon spinning rod.
richard p lim : It's Not Bad...
I bought this reel due to all the reviews on Youtube and on Amazon. This reel seemed to be the 2nd pick out of 10 when it came to baitrunners. Before, I had bought the Sharky IIIs by KastKing, which are on the top 10 list, just usually around 6 or 7 on the list. I really recommend the Sharky IIIs as they are pretty durable and cheap. The Okuma was fairly within my budget at around $50, not like the Shimano baitrunner, which was close to the $100 range. I like the smooth drag, and the way the bail clicks when you open it. I haven't really caught a decent fish on this yet, but the retrieve is smooth. The ONLY problem that I have with this reel is that the "baitrunner" rear drag is comparitively soft to the front drag. You can barely hear it. Front drag, nice loud clicks when line is peeling off. The Sharky III kinda has it right in that dept. Nice loud clicks on the rear drag, and decent clicks on the front.
Bryant : Great reel.
My husband loves it.
mike : Awesome reel!
Great reel for saltwater fishing. Got this one to replace my 10 year old okuma bait feeder. Light weight and can cast all day with it.
Dennis : Five Stars
Great reel for use fishing for just about anything fresh water!????
Bryant : Great reel.
My husband loves it.
Mcwallyfish : Excellent reel
I have never on an Okuma reel before, (My mistake) . This reel is an great match for my 12 ft Beef-Steak Daiwa rod ,,,, spooled with 20 LB RUNCL mono line it makes a great bank river rod or lake rod when You need to distance cast.......... has drag power ..... I don't use the bait feeder mech. very often ,,,,, but works well when I do...... the reason for this is I use line alarm indicators on all of my spinning rods. For the price, you can't beat these reels and I usually only buy Daiwa equipment !
Sergiu : Great reel for the price! Outstanding quality!
Great budget reel! Caught a few fish over 20lbs and did great with this reel! Nice and smooth drag! I will eventually but one more!
Keith B : Great little reel, especially for the money.
This inshore reel exceeded my expectations. It was extremely smooth in both casting and retrieving. Would definitely purchase again. amazon as always was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
