I am looking to purchase one of the abu garcia reels but i need to know which ones offer low gear ratio in the 5 range?

Answer: You could rig this reel in a broomstick and it will perform perfectly fine, I suggest spool it with #20-#30 braid and use a leader. It’s a great reel!

Answer: I had a recurring problem with this reel where the side plate would come off while using it. The button to release the side plate can easily go to the off position. This happened twice to me both times the plate fell overboard. I have had to order the side plate both times. I have glued the button in place. I do not recommend this reel.

Answer: I have pulled in steelhead on mine using 20# braid and cranks. The reel performed admirably

Answer: I would advise that you use braided fishing line. Not string

Answer: That would depend on what type of fishing you are going to do. Top water I would suggest 12 to 15lb mono. If you will be fishing the lilly pads I suggest a 20 to 30lb braid. If you are fishing crank baits or drop shoot a 12 to 20lb floro will work nicely. If you are going all around with this and you will be fishing heavy cover while doing all then just go with a braided line. Hope this helps

Answer: I'm not sure how to take this question since there is no context to it. Attached to a rod? Separate? It's extremely light weight and, as a low profile, small. So it would be easy to stuff in a large tackle box to have as a spare or to switch out in changing situations. Some days when the bass are not biting, I switch it up for crappie but I have 2 separate poles/reels. I suppose you could take it along and just swap the reels out? Is that what you mean?

Answer: I use mine at least 1-2 times a week for light inshore fishing in SoCal and I haven’t had any problems with it yet. It has fallen in ocean water a few times. I took it apart and cleaned it. It still works great. I rinse it with fresh water after every use and service it myself every 2-3 months. I’ve had it for about a year now.

How much weight can this handle and how many ball bearings does it have?

Answer: I am not sure what the weight limitations are, but i have caught some fairly big fish on mine. I boated a 40 pound cat fish with my revo no problem. I catch 5 pound bass on a regular basis. This reel has never let me down. depending on the reel they have 7 to 11 bearings.

Awesome reel with one exception. Being a long time Abu Garcia fan I bought this without trying it in a store first. It is nice and smooth and a great reel...... until you hold it in your hand and the side cover pops off as your reeling in. Let me explain. On the bottom of the reel is a release for the side cover so you can pull the spool out. If your not careful you can hit the switch and the cover pop off I have done this three times now luckily it has fallen at my feet and not bounced into the water. Placement was not ideal for palming this reel. If it was relocated or had a multi step lock I would give this 5 stars

Inspect your reel immediately upon arrival.
Purchased a "new" Revo X but what arrived was not new at all. Both the shipping and packaging boxes were fine, undamaged. Inside, the reel was not in a plastic bag and had leaked oil on the Warranty Info paper. Closer inspection revealed missing paint in multiple places as well. Then, just for fun, I have the handle a crank. Instead of the smooth operation there was a grinding and squeaking sound and the vibrations through the handle itself felt like gravel. I backed off the drag and brake to the fullest extent and there was no change in the ominous sound or feel.
At best, this reel was purchased, used, returned damaged, then res-sold as new after not being inspected by the receiver.
Amazon, being their usual stellar selves, promptly issued a return label and replaced the item with free Next Day shipping.
I ordered this reel as a replacement for another reel I wore out after 15 years (not an Abu) and will make my third Abu reel. I fully expect that when the replacement arrives, it will live up to the Abu name. Since this is a different and newer model than my other Aubu, I will post an update on the reel performance after using it a few times.

I have been using bait casters for a few years now and have caught lots of bass on them. Al my bait casters have been Kast king reels since they are cheap, or were, and i was a beginner. This is my first $100 reel and i will tell you it is worth every penny. It blows my kk assassin (which is defective) out of the water. It is a bit heavier but it backlashes less and casts farther than any other real i own, even my other abu garcia pro max spinner. it comes with bearing lubricant which is a plus. I own all abu garcia rods which i swear by so this rod match up quit good. don't mess around with cheap amazon brands, and if you are unsure about shipping damage then buy from store, nothing wrong with that. The reel reason not to mess with cheap brands is maintenance capabilities. The maintenance door is highly designed and well thought out. on cheap knock off brands they will have better drag, lighter weight and look cool but long term performance they will break down faster and usually break apart when you disassemble for cleaning or installing replacement parts. All in all this reel is way better than i thought it would be and makes me want to save up for one of their higher end models.

First I ordered a pro max 3, which is a great reel. I received a pro max that had been taken apart and modified, at least it appeared so to me. After finishing that return I decided not to order a pro max and look for an Abu Garcia in the similar price range, I found the revo x. It looked great and it has a metal frame. A quick detach non handle side plate for easy cleaning and a lube port. I ordered it in a left hand retrieve. I had already used one in my local academy sports store, I patiently and excitedly awaited my new revo to show up. It arrived on my door step and I open the box to see a right hand retrieve circle shaped reel. My first opinion was hmm, I think they may have accidentally sent me a nicer more expensive saltwater reel. I noticed some scuffs and what not but who cares, saltwater reef reel for the price of a budget friendly bass reel, I'll take it! I start spooling up some clear 30 lb fluorocarbon and boom no function in the worm gear. So it all spools up in one little area. I left it on the spool put it back in the box and sent it back. I have since bought 2 revo gen 4 x models at academy and have had only one trip out with them, however I must say the reel itself is excellent for the price. Cannot beat it. Also, I do not know how you could accidentally hit the latch on the side while palm gripping it as some have pointed out. It is very recessed and also it is placed on the under portion of the side. I would think the only way this issue could be a problem is that during transportation you may have it jumping around in boat or truck, before my first cast I check to see that it is securely pushed forward in to its lock position, I have never had a problem. Great reel!!! Buy from store, it is worth the extra 10 bucks to get a brand new in package reel!! I have had great experience with amazon through every brand/manufacturer except for Abu Garcia and Zippo. Zippo lighters have been fine but fuel bottles have arrived damaged and incorrect (regular not premium butane, I paid for premium). Moral of the story, if you buy from a company through amazon once and you do not receive the correct item, do not re order from that manufacturer again. I hate Abu is misrepresenting itself on this site because I have been a life long user, they make excellent products and have great customer service. Just be warned that some of the products sent out through third party online companies may not be the best of their products, If I had not been a life long user I would have never noticed the problems with the first reel, handle changed and spool seemed fraudulent. They were small details that many may overlook. Be careful, make sure you get what you pay for, when it comes to Abu even "budget" reels cost a good amount of money to a normal working man. This time the reel was very obviously not a revo as soon as I opened the box. If these are supposed to be refurbished or returned open box items they should be listed as such. Great reel if you get the right one. Looking through comments I see others are affected, signs of use to look for would be oil bottle non existent and or empty. Oil stains or fingerprints on reel. Scuffs, scratches and scrapes on the entire exterior of the reel. Unmatched colors. Noise in the action, every Abu model should come out of the packaging with a nice smooth drag and cast. Finally, check the eyelet that moves your line side to side while spooling the reel for signs of use, and check the base of the reel where it mounts to your rod for marks that would tell you it had been mounted before. If somebody uses a reel and sends it back without proper care or cleaning it may be permanently damaged, that is not what I want to spend my hard earned money on. My son didn't deserve to have to wait all of these weeks for me to go buy him and his mom their first true bait casters for largemouth. Waiting on return process to get money back and then waiting on shipping again, has strung this out in to about 2 weeks and where we live those two weeks were very good warm fishing weeks, it is now cold and rainy. Hopefully we will get a few warm weekends again before the cold sets in for good. It is a bit of a nuisance but I can deal with it and will continue to buy Abu Garcia reels as I always have. I use the revo 4 premier. It is an amazing reel. I must admit that with Lew's so close to performance I may switch if they have a better online ordering experience.

I don't know why but I can set up this reel to almost never thumb or back lash. I mainly use this reel for bottom fishing with jigs, t-rigs. I set the brakes and almost never really need to adjust them after that. Casts smooth and far. Strong drag. I have had the side plate come off on me a couple times.

Reel is cool works fine. It is NOT NEW. Looks like is has a season of wear on it! I dont might used gear but I ordered new! Super disappointed.

Calvin & Diane : Decent reel bad product support

Used this reel for 3 months. Performs as expected for the price. Only complaint is that braking system is a little unforgiving. The biggest issue is the nut that holds cranking arm stripped. Called Abu Garcia and was told it was back ordered in Nov. I sent it to a warranty service center and they said they are waiting on the parts. Its been 3 months. Never calls me or notifies me of anything. Called repeatedly to check on it. Still waiting on parts.
