Best size for tarpon?
Answer: If you are putting together a rig strictly for tarpon I would go at least a 4000 if not the 4500 those will get you 17.5 to 22 # drag respectively. If you want to put together something that is a little more of an inshore Red, Trout, Snook, Jack and Tarpon rod, the 3000 size is quite a bit lighter, almost 5 oz., and will be nicer to use all day and still give you decent line capacity and 15# of drag. The fight may be a little longer but the reel will take it. You might consider the Ballistic Ci4 in a 3000 size as well for the combo rod, 22# of drag, light but composite frame.

I expected a lot from this reel and I bought 2 of them. The first one gave ou after 2 trips, the reel becomes not smooth in some occasion. It feels like the gear does not line up correctly. I tested it out extensively with light tackle, 15lb braid and 1oz jig for cocktails blue. even tho it does very well when new, i can't see the zinc gear last long. For this money, I want a power durable reel..

Only issue I have with this reel is that after using it 6 trips in the bail will not completely close (intermittent) and the seller suggest I contact daiwa warranty for repair. Other then this issue it’s a great reel. I use it in saltwater for Reds, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Snook and at times what ever bites.

I like the fishing reel, but it has issues. I have three of them and they've all developed an issue with grinding and or binding like the sealed bearings are dirty or bad . It goes away and comes back a little bit. Salt is getting in somewhere or something like that. I keep my reels very clean and have never had this problem with another reel.

My opinion is based only on the product weight. I received the 5000 size of the saltist. Considering the size, this reel simply weighs too much. There are other reels of similar size and quality that are much lighter. I returned the reel the same day I received it.

Used this reel for two years in salt water with just a fresh water rinsing after use with no issues. I never opened it or greased the line roller. I dunked the reel in oncoming waves while beaching a 40 inch striper bass too.
Edit: September 2021. I laid my rod and saltist reel on a warf. A seagull got caught on the line and hauled it in the water. It got dragged out in the middle somewhere. RIP saltist. Great reel before the seagull stole it. :(

Arrived on time and in Great condition. Reel is super smooth and getting better with use. Casts extremely well and the drag is super smooth as well.
My first Diawa reel was a BG 2500 and I LOVE IT, especially because of the price. I wanted to treat myself to a high end reel and was looking at Stratics and the Diawa Ballistic. Call me old school, but I still have a thing about a reel being made of metal, the Stratic Ci4 and the Ballistic are both composite materials and this is 2018 so I am sure they are strong, and I was really close to going with the Balistic over the Stratic mostly because of the size of the gears and drag washers in the Ballistic. Both are physically larger in the Ballistic than the Stratic.
Then there is the bearing count, the Saltist has 9, Ballistic and Stratic have 7. At the particular time I was looking the Saltist was between $195 and $199 and the Balistic was anywhere from $10-20 more. I was in a total quandary as to which way to go.
Then I got one of those emails from Amazon and the Saltist went down to $145.00. That made up my mind, in my head it seemed to me that from a construction standpoint that the Saltist should be more expensive, it is slightly heavier than the Ballistic, (less than a wrist watch difference), but has more bearings, and is aluminum, so I pulled the trigger and put the extra $50 into a better rod than I had planned on getting originally. Plus the rod matches the reel and it looks SWEET and fishes like a dream.

My opinion is based only on the product weight. I received the 5000 size of the saltist. Considering the size, this reel simply weighs too much. There are other reels of similar size and quality that are much lighter. I returned the reel the same day I received it.
