Smallie Wade Saturday June 20 in NOVA? (See post #9) 2024

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Hey guys,

Don't got a boat and as most of the regulars on here know I don't have a whole lot of time on the water this year because I got a eight month old at home and I'm trying to manage work, family, friends, and time on the water. So I don't get to get out as often now.

But I did get the day off on June 8. Last week a buddy of mine came with me and we split rental at fountainhead. Had a rough day. Fishing this transition of spawn to post spawn is always kinda hard for me. Especially without any depth finder and no gas motor on a HUGE reservoir like that. Not to mention the occoquan isn't my favorite of fisheries, but I am trying to get better at fishing it.

Anyway, my plan is to rent again. Either out of Brittle, Orange, Anna or Lake Ridge. I've been trying to get out to Brittle for a while now since they started rentals back up.

If anyone is interested in riding up with me and or meeting me up there for a full day and splitting costs let me know. Would be cool to chill with some of you guys. Heck even if a few are free and we wanna do a couple boats and stuff and just meet up and hang out. Just let me know fellas.

If anyone has an open seat in a boat and are looking for a partner for that day, that always works too. Later.

fishing user avatarjeepcrazy reply :

I'm interested.  No rental needed, I have a boat.

Let me confirm with the boss but I can go pretty much anywhere.

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Sounds good Jeep.  If you got the boat, I'm down for whatever you feel is good.  I've fished pretty much everywhere here in NOVA, not neccessarily from a boat but my dad and I normally fish the Potomac out of Lees, Anna, The Occoquan River, Germantown.

I've been interested in trying both Motts and Abel although they are tough because of limited structure but I know they both have good sized bass.

If you have any ideas just let me know.  Pm me if you get a confirmation and we can talk options and where to meet up.  Thanks for the response man.  Look forward to hearing back from you.  I can pick up gas since you got the ride too, or launch fee.  Whatever works.

fishing user avatarVABasser reply :

Hey man sorry I haven't got around to PMing you.  I've had relatives here all week and been busy catching up on all the things related to coming home from college.  I've been able to get out on the Potomac a fair amount because work hasnt started up.  I'll try to post a report up in a day or two.  Next week I'm starting training for this internship thing I got, should last til the first week in June.  After that I dont really know how much I'll be working, we'll see.  June 8th might be good for me if Jeep has to bail for some reason.  Let me know whenever you have a day off in June and we'll definitely get out on the Potomac.

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Va, I'll keep you lined up in case things fall through.  I just sent Jeep a pm this morning to see if we could get things finalized.  Thanks for the response.  Don't worry about not getting to me last week man, I was out of town all weekend so I didn't keep up with anyone here either.  But I should be checking most days this week on here.  I'll shoot you a buzz later in the week seeing what's up.

fishing user avatarPhilly_N_Nova reply :

Hey, I don't have a boat but I'd like to meet up with you and guys and learn a few things. I can help with any fees.

fishing user avatarsoccplayer07 reply :

Hey JCRZY. I just bought a bass boat. I am looking for people to fish with especially since I have the summer off (best part about teaching). We'll have to hit the Potomac up.

fishing user avatarTheRushFactor reply :

If any of yall need a fishing partner just let me know, I can pay for launch fees and help out with gas, I'm down whenever.

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Thanks for all the responses and offers guys. However, just found out the wife has planned on taking off this day as well (day after our big vacation to williamsburg) so we can clear up some banking credit card stuff at our local banks and do some work around the house we've been putting off forever so I have to kill this whole day now after I have all of you respond... so yea...

However, father's day weekend I am putting together a smallie wade for Saturday the 22 in Fredericksburg hosted by my dad and I. We have a couple interested but only one definate. I typically can have 10 - 20 fish days here and I'm NOT the best smallie fishermen in the world by any means so if anyone is interested I can tell you guys where to meet us and walk you through the wade. I know it well and have done it over 10 times now. There is only one spot they may or may not be navigable pending on water heights but I'll keep all those interested informed as I have a site where I check that daily (usgs).

Pm me for details. We will be leaving early am to be at the river around 7 or so. We will wade til' 3 or 4pm. Bring tubes, grubs, inline spinners and whatever you like to fish for smallies with. Weightless senkos are a blast here. Pm me for bait specifics as I have quite a few that produce EVERY outing whether they are hitting or not.

Hopefully I get some of you guys on board. It's gonna be a blast. It's designed as a father son type outing to celebrate the weekend but by no means is limited. If your pops is busy or is not interested or doesn't fish bring yourself. Or if you are a pops with no son in tote, fine whatever bring your happy face along lol. Talk to ya'll later.

I will get out with ALL of you. It will become one of my goals this year.

P:s:  If for whatever reason weather brings water levels up around this time and we cannot wade because it is too dangerous my fallout plan is to meet up at a local lake with boat rentals.  I was thinking along the lines of Lake Brittle.

No one has to feel limited, if you don't like the ideas then you don't have to show.  I just wanted a chance for some of the new guys and or folks interested in learning more about smallies in the area to get out and have fun.  Let me know fellas.

fishing user avatarNovaBasser reply :

I'm def interested in the Father's Day outing.  I will not be bringing my daughter and my father lives in Wisconsin.  However, I'm going to try and get a Father/Son team to come with me.  I will keep you posted!  Sounds like a lot of fun!

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

JCrzy4Bass, just make sure you have a good back up plan because water levels are really high right now.  Also the extended forecast shows quite a few more days of rain over the next two weeks.  That river may end up being too dangerous to wade if the weather pattern stays the same over the next two weeks.

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

If it stays on a weekday and depending on when ya start I'll be up for it!

fishing user avatarhokiefisherman93 reply :

would be down for doing it possibly, my old man might not be off but i might find my way down there pm me with more details

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Hey guys just wanted to let you know there is a backup plan in place but it requires a bit of cash for rentals.  The idea would be we meet up early at Lake Brittle and fish jon boats out there for bass and walleye.  I still think depending on how many of these storms are "scattered" and depending on how long it takes runoff to make it downstream and how BAD these weathermen are at forecasting we may get lucky and be able to wade.  Too early to make a call.  I'll update more on Monday with the condition of the rap.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

Walleye?!? what the heck for?

I'll bring the Yak along if the river's too crazy =D

fishing user avatarNewAngler reply :

hey guys, im new to fishing in general, and have reallyu only fished Motts and Abel. Have nothing to show for it yet, but i'm down for being a fishing partner, i could learn a lot. dont have a boat.

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

The Rap was down before all this rain early this week. Depending on what happens next week we may get lucky, but we will see.  So far looks like Simon, Hoki and Nova are in. If Simon brings his yak then we should be able to work things out renting two boats total. I'll keep you guys posted throughout the week.

fishing user avatarNovaBasser reply :

Yeah I'm in for sure and I might have 2 more with me, let me know what the plans are as soon as you know, boat or wade so I can plan things out for everyone on my end.  I'm going to assume that boats on the lake would be the way we are gonna go due to all the rain, and I doubt the rivers will be wadable by then.  Should be fun either way!  Let hope that the weather cooperates!

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

There is still plenty of time for the water to go back down. You guys should be fine as long as we don't have anymore rain showers that last for more than an afternoon. The forecast shows only a few thunderstorms between now and then (a forecast that far in advance is never completely accurate but it might give you an idea of what the weather is going to be like).

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Yea, the rap calms pretty quickly.  It was up to some 6+ feet and change on Sunday night, then came down to like 3.6 within a day or two or stable weather.  I check the USGS site out of Fredericksburg everyday when planning one of these.  We should have a concrete idea probably by next Thursday or so.

See you out there Nova, should be a blast dude.

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Heads up for those interested.  I think this is gonna be a last minute call guys.  We have a chance of isolated and or scattered storms almost every day this week.  It's really gonna depend on how that plays out.  Right now water levels at fredericksburg are at 3.46 feet.  Very close to safe wading conditions.  Safe rec use of the river in this area is 3.2 feet.  We have 4 or 5 days to see what happens with it.

Either way Saturday will be fun.  If you guys just wanna holler so I know who to expect and send info to regarding where to meet up and such that would be cool.  Also let me know if your a yes for both situations or just one or another.

I know as of last week I had hoki, another siteer, and simon on board.  I may have one other as well depending on what I get back through email.  Looks like it will be a decent sized group if its a wade and 2 - 3 boats if it's at brittle.  Talk to you guys later.

fishing user avatarhokiefisherman93 reply :

let me know if it turns into brittle...  if so i might bring down my yak from richmond

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

3.08 this morning as far as water levels on the Rap.  That's as of 8am today.  Don't know how heavy the rain will be down there today and or how much there will be but I don't think it's gonna dictate the levels for this weekend.  We are gonna need a couple of strong storms to push the levels back above the safe mark.  Looks like the Rap is still on as of now guys.

Two days, let's cross our fingers for some smallie action!  I'll post up Friday with the final word so you guys can get what you need ready Friday night.  Either way I wanna get as early a start as possible.  I wnat to be fishing by 7am Saturday.  Later fellas.

fishing user avatarNewAngler reply :

hey.

i just foudn out i cannot take off work monday morning, so i wade from like 6-8 am if any one is down. it wouldnt be worth it if i hop on a boat. let me know, i'd like to wade. never have, and dont know what i need.. vest? waders, boots? fill me in fellas. i look forward to getting out with some experience. also, what kind of bait? senkos? holler at me!

fishing user avatarhokiefisherman93 reply :

fishing user avatarVABasser reply :

Same problem with the PM's, I couldn't PM you back Jason.  Bummer I had written a nice little report.  Unfortunately I can't make it Sat.  I'll try PMing you later explaining why.  Anybody know if the whole PM system is messed up or just Jcrzy's?

fishing user avatarNewAngler reply :

I had sent one earlier. Maybe around 3 or 4

fishing user avatarNewAngler reply :

What the hell is a senko? A plastic worm, right? Any plastic worm? I just picked up a pack of Gulp 5" pumpkin worms. Considered a senko?

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Sorry guys, I was trying to block them from certain people and checked the wrong thing.  I will fix it, but I have a busy night tonight.  Will pm you vabasser and hoki tommorrow am, be on the lookout.  Later guys.

Senko

They're kinda expensive though and rip easily...I prefer the basspro stick-o's

and the *** version also, though in my experience the *** ones aren't as heavy

fishing user avatarhokiefisherman93 reply :

what kind of baits are going to work best?

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Hoki I will pm you the info now.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

take some tubes, some topwaters (poppers, walking baits, etc..), soft plastic jerkbaits, shakey head rigs, and senkos. You should be set with those but you could add some jigs to that list if you can carry all of that.

For colors: any sort of brown. Purple has also worked well with me but varying shades of brown/green have worked the best in my experience.

fishing user avatarNewAngler reply :

wht time are you guys starting?

theres too much experience thats gonna be out there for me to not fight to go. (have f-ing house work to do) i may be bale to come down for a couple hours.

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

pics, pics, pics!

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Well, no one showed up and I guess it's a good thing, sorta. Well my friend Jimmy and I got there and stuck around til' about 7:15am and no one showed. The water was down a bit from the storms but was way too muddy to see anything. I waded in chest deep and hadn't even gotten to deepest part yet and couldn't see a foot down in the water as to where I was stepping. I deemed it too dangerous and decided we'd do plan B. Head up to Hunting Run.

Well it would have ran about 65 dollars for me and my out of county buddy (Prince William) to rent a boat til' 3 so we decided to try Motts.

We fished there from 8:15 to 11:30 and the storms rolled in so we canned it. We had just put together a good pattern and started to figure stuff out, coves, shallow wood cover (inside edge) adjacent to ledges on cranks. My buddy nailed two on a Pro Model SK mid depth crank in sexy shad. One keeper went 1lb 6ozs, the other was just under 12" so not keeper sized. I lost one on a Rapala Shad Rap and he lost one on the same bait he caught the other two on. Pics attached.

I am starting a new thread for what happend next :) The site is soooooo slow and my lunch break is over so the new thread will be up after 6pm under "Nova Topwater is on". Muccchhhh bigger fishies.

Here's the pics from motts:
