Those pink and white blossoms are not dogwoods.

They are cherry blossoms.

Easy to get confused between the two.

When the dogwood in my front yard blooms you can be sure I will tell the world!!!!

And some of the them could be shadbush, aka serviceberry.

"A fanciful etymology explains the name 'serviceberry' by noting that the flowers bloom about the time roads in the Appalachian mountains became passable, allowing circuit-riding preachers to resume church services. A similar etymology says that blooming serviceberry indicated the ground had thawed enough to dig graves, so burial services could be held for those who died in the winter when the only way to deal with the bodies was to allow them to freeze and wait for spring. Both of these fanciful etymologies are unlikely to be correct since the term is attested for both English and New World species as early as the 16th century, well before settlement of English North America,[26] and serviceberry is far from unique in blossoming early in the year."

My dogwoods haven’t bloomed yet but they do have buds on them. It won’t be long.

Well shoot guys. I saw the blooms and just assumed. Thanks for the info though!

It happens to all of us.

I used to get them confused, too.

Give the dogwoods another 30-days and hit the water in search of the beds.

I’m a big fan of bed fishing if the fish are safely released back to the bed!

should be just in time for our "spring break" Lake Anna trip :D

fishing user avatarWdyCrankbait reply :

But you can still go fishing.

Sam has beat the dogwood blooming into me so much that I hear it in my dreams. Lol!

fishing user avatarBlack Bill Dance reply :

So guys...have the Dogwoods by you all blossomed yet? I work Downtown Richmond and the Dogwoods around my office has yet to blossomed fully. I would love to go out this weekend and wet a few lines, but I will be grilling and smoking up a meat-storm this weekend. But next week most definitely hitting the waters.

Nope. Some of mine are budding....

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

The one in my yard has yet to bloom. But this next week is looking very promising. 80 on thursday and a few days in the 70's should help to get things going in the right direction.

fishing user avatarBlack Bill Dance reply :

Most definitely....but a nice rainstorm suppose to hit at end of week @MassYak85, do you think that's gonna effect anything?

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Black Bill, of course the rain will have an impact on the bass.

First, rain arrives via a cold front the bass will get lockjaw the next day or two.

Second, cold rain lowers the water temperature and the bass will get lockjaw until the water temperatures get warmer.

Third, the cold water from the rain enters the backs of creeks and the bass will get lockjaw shutting down good fishing areas.

Fourth, the bass moving up to spawn will head back and wait for warmer water and have lockjaw.

Fifth, the cold weather arriving after April 5th will slow down the dogwoods from blooming.

Sixth, the runoff will make the water murky or muddy and it will take a few days before the silt settles to the bottom. The bass will get lockjaw during this process.

Otherwise, no problems.

Let us know how you do. :)

fishing user avatarTOXIC reply :

I'll be on the Potomac Saturday and all of my intel says they are ready to go and that the cold weather hasn't pushed them off their shallow water staging.  The rain Friday should be a warm rain and will only help.  Just hope we don't get too much.  Hitting the pre-spawn big mammas on the Potomac is a BLAST "if" you can time it right.  Red Rattletraps to the rescue!!  :P

And no, the Dogwoods haven't bloomed yet!!

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

Woke up this morning the dogwood in my yard with some small flowers starting to sprout! Went to Western Branch in my kayak this morning only to get my butt kicked by the wind. Headed back to the ramp after an hour once the wind gusts started ripping my anchor loose from the bottom and I realized if it got much worse I wouldn't be able to get back to the ramp. Only made like 15 casts. I did see a catfish (or a huge bass :D) come up to the surface about 50 yards from me chasing something though.

I hit up Lee Hall Reservoir yesterday...

A beautiful day to be on the water. But the wind

was pretty wicked. So glad I have a motor :) .

Terrible day for a single bite. Even a nibble.

As for dogwoods in my yard, still in the budding

stage. Although a slight yellow tinge of pollen was

all over my Rav4. Ah yes, springtime in Virginia.

fishing user avatarWdyCrankbait reply :

I will be hitting up Lee Hall soon.  Cant wait!

WINTER FROM HELL CONTINUES with 2 more snow chances APRIL 2 and APRIL 7-8. Lets talk about 4/2 event first

IMAGE #1 is how the MODELS are dealing with APRIL 2 (mostly in the MORNING) . Now earlier in the week this event look like it would impact central & southern WVA / VA /eastern MD with wet snow/ rain. THAT HAS SHIFTED NORTH

The cold front on APRIL 1 that comes in looks to be delayed. Therefore the LOW that develops on the front is d...elayed as well... so the snow will ONLY impact far NORTHERN VA (N of I-66) / all of western & central MD/ north half of WVA/ southern half of PA/ NJ .. North of I-66.

NWS DC has issued an early snow map which IMO is way too aggressive with snow amounts in DC BAL and northern VA ... SEE IMAGE #3 --

IMAGE #3 shows that surface temps are WELL above
32 degrees over most of Northern VA DCA BAL even into
areas such as Winchester VA and Hagerstown MD

Yup! Same with mine! Unfortunately looks like a cold front is gonna hit us, again on Saturday. Not sure where the fish are at whatsoever yet so not sure where that will set them back to.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

My dogwood buds are embiggened but not quite blooming.

Still some time on the clock. Will be interesting with the temp

fluctuations in the coming days, as @MassYak85 mentions.

fishing user avatarN Florida Mike reply :

Where I live, when Azaleas bloom the bass will be on or near the beds. ESPECIALLY AROUND A FULL MOON.

fishing user avatarTOXIC reply :

More importantly the water temps will take a hit with all of this up and down weather.  Quick to cool, slow to warm.  Saturday we found 53-55 degree water on the Potomac.  Let's see what the snow does to the temps this Saturday.

Had a pretty good Friday, Saturday and Sunday down your way.  Jerkbaits and spinnerbaits mostly, but jigs and finesse worms, too.  Bass are scattered and not too predictable, so nothing approaching a pattern.  Jerkbaits at drop offs and just inside creek channels was closest thing to pattern.

This one came on finesse jig with small chunk...very slow ROF

I see a bridge in the background, can't ID where you were at!

Deep green water. Were you in Williamsburg?

I'm glad you had success. I only had three rods with me and

a somewhat limited amount of time. I felt I should have thrown

cranks and spinners, but went with wacky, drop, and swim bait.

Shoulda gone with my gut, I suppose :annoyed1:

Yep.  Weeds are coming up surprisingly fast.

No doubt! I was shocked at how much the weeds have

grown at NNPK. I suspect they will spray some copper

sulfate this year since they haven't done so for several

years.

Blooms on my dogwood tree are ready to pop open.

Cold front this weekend will slow them down but I expect warmer temperatures next week will cause them to blossom and the bass will be on their beds!!!!

Better late than never. :)

Went by a couple ponds the other day on a bright, sunny day. I didn't see any beds visible as of yet. At the Mid-Lothian Mine Lake I man was fishing from the dock on the left. He was using live minnows and for the most part just catching some perch. If you walk the bank closest to the road where the storm drain is you can catch some nice crappie, but the bass still has *Lockjaw* as of now.

@Sam @WdyCrankBait have you ever fished the pond in the Grove? does it produce any nice size fish?

No, I have seen the pond  but never stopped to fish it.

Looks like it could be interesting to fish it.

Give it a shot.

fishing user avatarWdyCrankbait reply :

I’ve fished it. The lake is a Giant bowl. You really have to heave it out there. Healthy fish though.
