Ok everyone, it looks like Wednesday is going to approach 70 degree I gotta head out after work. Any recommendations for lures to throw? I know the water is still going to be cold, but the air will not and I have to go fishing!
Water temperature?
Sky conditions?
Water clarity?
Cover?
Structure?
Warm front moving through?
Current?
Try your search baits, such as lipless crankbaits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, Shad Raps, jerk baits. If no action then......
Try your plastics either wacky, jiggy, drop shot, Texas or Carolina rig.
Try dead sticking, too.
Remember, in cold water they want a big, easy meal fished slowely. Like a jig and pork trailer; spinnerbait and chatterbait with a trailer.
Senkos! Remember Senkos!
I know that a lot of guys buy my spinnerbaits this time of year waiting for that first warm day. I do sell a lot of single blade (big colorado blade) spinnerbaits to guys that are willing to fish the cold weather. I would focus on a jig but that is only if I am fishing out of a boat. If on the bank I would do just what was suggested...spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, jerkbaits. Remember that they are moving slow.

Hey NOVA guys, when do you guys normally start heading out for fishing? Can't wait to head out, even though I bank fish. To poor for a boat, to new to have friends with boats. :-/

I don't have a boat either. I start fishing when the ice melts
Nice. I was stationed in AK for the last 3 years, so Im just looking to catch anything, even if its just a buzz from my beer. I just want to fish. My wife is heading to Boston around the 15th of March, shes gone for a week, so I'm looking to tear it up. Might even try Anna, but who knows. Right now, I don't even care if I get skunked. Just trying to get a line wet. 8-)
why do you need warm weather to fish? i plan on breaking in my new lower unit this weekend then fishing every other weekend on SML probably. If there is no ice then fish whenever you feel like it even if its cold out.
This is true.

Thanks for the suggestions!
Come on spring!
Defiantly going Wed! I went yesterday, temp 38, 2-8 mile per hour wind and sleet, felt more like 28... could not feel my hands/nose/toes the whole time. Caught a very little bass and a crappie! I'm happy considering.... I doubt I'd catch anything, its my first time fishing in the winter, I'm lousy at fishing deep and not to mention the pond I fished is still recovering from being over fished. Caught them on a deep diver with very slow receive, actually snagged the crappie.
Not much to look at but it's a bass didn't bother with the crappie since the bass was enough proof.

very impressive and ballsy to fish a deep diver from the shore. every time ive tried that its snagged in about 3 seconds.
Little bugger must have been hungry.... great dedication getting out there.
Well I actually dredged up 2 small pines that the beavers cut down and sunk. I used a 6-9 foot diver around nearly 3/4 of the pond (lot of good it did me.. since I caught the 2 within the first 40 mins, total of 2 hours fishing) This is one of my main fishing holes so I know the depth around it. I also know were nearly all structure is in the pond, or at least within casting distance from the bank and the exception of the curve balls the beavers through at me. In the deeper area I retrieve it normal, then once I get near the swallows, I just stop and lift up on the rod without reeling (this keeps its action without it wanting to dive deeper) repeat and it never hits bottom. I did try other baits, but by that time I was just to cold to actually care or use them right . Oh and the bait color was Sexy Shad, my new fav color from useing it this summer
Anyone going fishing Sunday?
Blah its raining here! I really hope it gets warm and the sun stays out. I have cabin fever and fishing monday made it worse.
Hope everyone had a better day fishing then me, the fish kicked my butt. I was out there for 5 hours, fished 2 ponds and a creek, all I caught was one little bass. The wind was horrible, couldn't use my boat for the fear of the wind flipping it and lots of reel issues. Still I may try tomorrow, I need to figure out winter fishing, live bait being a cornerstone me thinks.
Go here and read what Woo says about local fishing.

The only thing I got was laughed at by the fish I was trying to catch. But, I had a good time fishing!
You didn't go fishing sam? what is wrong with you! (just kidding ;D ). Thanks for the link, I'll give it a look over.
I'm trying again tomorrow, anyone else?
I'm trying to go out Thursday, hopefully the weather will be nice and The lakes don't have ice on them.
Went today and the day started off good, it was 60 degrees (or more), fish were up in the shallows. I caught 3 dink bass and prob would of had more, but a cold front moved in.. still 3 isn't to bad! Still can't wait for spring when I can catch 30 of these dinks instead of just 3 ;D.
Where did you fish at?
Private pond, one I frequent since its down the road maybe 2.5 acres really nice small pond, I have pics here of it http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1296358207/45#45 Best thing about it is its 75-100 feet away from another pond of equal size and a decent size creek below that pond (pics on the same page) lots of fun in the summer
Should be nice weather February 13 through 17 so you can go fishing each day!!!
God I know, might be heading out to burke and to lake anne in reston of the 12 and 13. Let me know if anyone else is going out. Maybe showing places, then you can leave me and head for your money spots.
I hope so I'd like to go to other places but I'm still not familiar with late winter and early spring so I hate to make a trip not have any luck.
Here is a creek I want to fish, it has lots of swamps, I've fished from the bridge but never in a boat. I should be able to find some nice Chain pike or dead bodies
Up stream.
Down Stream
wow that creek looks amazing...
I went out yesterday and got skunked
but its going to be sunny this whole week so that should melt the ice off my favorite ponds :D
I went to that creek today! Just fishing from the bridge, I had some little Chain Pike follow my bait, strike and miss. After awhile and using different baits the mepp Spinner pulled through, I hooked a Chain pike which felt like snagging a rock, my 16 year old reel (the new one I bought last year broke, 3rd broken reel in 3 years : ) flew apart (least I had it for 16 years before it broke) so I reel the pike in with my hands and made the mistake of picking up on the line. The pike falls off on the bank, hits the water, I dive on my knees and stick my arm in to grab it but he got away.... Still counts if I get it on the bank right? I really wanted to hold that fish, he was only around 14 inches, I know that isn't big for a pike but its the biggest I've caught. Now excited, I couldn't wait to catch some more! but after a few cast I realized my licenses expired during fall, so I got the hell out of there (I was just at the sporting good store this morning......... ) I don't have money to pay fines.
Here are updated pics of the creek, didn't realize it had this much water, but its covered in vegetation/lily pads during summer. If this isn't pike heaven I don't know what is.
Looks like a good place to fish, espeically from the bank. Congrats on the three bass, I would be excited to catch anything in this cold weather. hahah
Thanks! I feel stupid though, when I was at the sporting goods store 2 people were talking about fishing (one worked there) one was talking about he had caught catfish and the other that he caught some strippers. Thinking I had accomplished something by catching those little bass I interrupted and said I've been catching small LBass, they gave me a funny look and the went back to talking. Few Seconds later the guy who works there was showing him a mounted Bass (prob 6-7 pounds) that he caught in Jan :-[
I plan to fish again for Chain pike today, I have the fever! But I will have to fish at the other creek because I have permission there, its private property so long as I fish from the bank I believe I don't need licenses (least that is how I determined what the law means) Chain pike aren't as common in it though so I doubt I will catch anything (there is a slim chance on Smallies and Bowfin though).
